Dwight Howard Knows Where He Will Sign as a Free Agent

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Dwight Howard revealed some important personal details to the LA Times during a lengthy and entertaining interview. He’s honest, goofy and completely intent on keeping everyone guessing about his future plans. In other words, he’s still very much Dwight Howard.

Without a trace of irony or insincerity, the man claims that he’s trying to change the world: “I feel like I was put on this earth to change the world. I wasn’t put on earth just to play basketball. I want to change the world, and this is a great platform to do it.” He talks about becoming an icon, “someone 200 years from now they will remember.”

Howard also makes it known that he cries … a lot: he teared up when Orlando Magic fans asked him to stay, he cried after LeBron James finally won a championship, and he nearly broke down while watching the latest Tom Cruise flick “Jack Reacher”.

Most notably, Dwight Howard says that he knows which team he will sign with once he becomes the most sought-after free agent in the NBA next summer. He’s just not telling.

Howard will be a free agent at the end of this season. I ask him if he knows now where he will be playing next year, and he says, “I know.” I suggest that means the Lakers because he could not know of any other opportunity at this time. But I still make a pitch for the Clippers, figuring he might want to play for the best team in town. He laughs, and when I suggest that some opine that if this season falls apart it will persuade him to leave, he says that’s not the case.

He says the Lakers are all about championships, and “what’s not to like about L.A.?” There is an expectation by some that he cannot coexist with Kobe. “Why can’t we coexist?” he asks. “Because we’re opposites? I thought opposites attract. You know why we can play well together? Kobe knows how hard I work and that I’m all about championships. We’re also entertainers, and for the two hours and 20 minutes that people come to a game they want to be entertained.”

You really should read the whole thing.

I am totally not surprised that he cries a lot. I hoped by now he would have cut this bs and just committed to a team instead of continuing to mess people around. The rate he’s going, nobody is going to remember him in 200 years.

  • GNett1983

Yeeah D-Wight!! They will remember you as a fckn GOOFBALL!!!

  • RKJ92

No way he stays in LA if they dont make the playoffs, or even lose in the first round, with an almost depleted roster through old age as well.. I just don’t see him staying no matter what he says about LA being his team. Whoever gets him on their team though sure will be blessed..

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

    Houston

  • kwamepooh

who has the money to sign him?

  • s2k

    ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Hansen/618510464 Lars Hansen

Problem is nobody will sign him. Nobody looking for a quality big man, that is.
However, if you’re looking for an enormous, human coat hanger and happen have some millions to spare, this dude will be awesome. Comes with perfect smile and funny jokes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/francis.aboy Francis Aboy

Sign and trade him for Bynum and Jrue.

  • shockexchange

If L.A. doesn’t make the playoffs or gets bounced early, D12 won’t re-sign. L.A. will have broken up the best front line in the L (Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time) for D12 with a year expiration. It will be the biggest front office blunder since ’86 when Philly (i) traded Moses to Washington and (ii) traded Brad Daugherty(#1 pick) to Cleveland and all they got in return were Roy Hinson, Jeff Ruland and Cliff Robinson.

  • RunNGun

The LAkers… where else since he likes to live in Shaq’s shadow? :) Houston is a distant second.

  • http://twitter.com/NaijaAdditude Mr. E

Smh Bynum’s bum knees are the reason we traded him in the first place. It was a good move to get rid of him.

  • DwightSucks

    This guy is the worst.

  • patrick

    Chicago imo

  • spit hot fiyah

and also by default the best center in the league, so every team with cap room will throw the max at him

  • Dymez

Who would’ve thought that the Lakers and Magic would end up tied for the same number of losses at this point in the season after the Lakers acquired Dwight? I thought he left to go “win championships,” yet this guy seems to be happier and happier about his position each day. I guess winning wasn’t the real reason after all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

not sure if dhoward stays. i would think dhoward after playing with kb on usa in 2007 and 2008 he knows how the mamba ticks. can they work together sure! everyone gotta step up. i do not expect dhoward to be an 80% free throw shooter but at least do like shaq..make em in the fourth!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Who the hell is going to remember basketball players in 200 years? Maybe guys like Jordan or Magic but Dwight Howard? Really? He’s not even Shaq and even Shaq is like half forgotten already.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

You do realize that Bynum has not played a single game for the 76ers right? He wouldn’t be playing for the Lakers either.

  • shockexchange

Not true. If he had stayed in L.A. he would not have gone bowling. He only went bowling (which is how he was injured) because he was depressed from having been traded.

  • shockexchangeisahomo

Go read up on the latest news about Andrew Bynum’s status of his knees. Not looking good for him playing at all this year. If Dwight leaves, it would be equivalent to what Lakers would have gotten if Bynum stayed which is nothing. Bynum’s career is in jeopardy right now.

  • LLC#12

True, I think maybe only MJ will be memorable in 100 years time, beyond that, I doubt anybody will care about anybody who is playing sports today.

  • patrick

This guy cannot hit 90/100 in practice i bet. I think that is just wrong…the form of his follow thru on his shot is so weak, that he cannot 90% is not doable…i think that was a typo..he could maybe hit 75% tho….he needs to improve his form to be able to hit 90%..the follow-thru is key..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you guys realize there are people who can name entire rosters of baseball players from over 100 years ago?

  • Mack

Sorry Dwight but you win a ring for people to take you seriously as far as legendary status… the manchild act ain’t cutting it anymore, really.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s talking about the Lakers nitwits.

  • LakeShow

    Your an idiot.

    Career: 18-13-2 57% FG’s

  • LakeShow

    Gentlemen’s bet:

You leave this site entirely if he resigns.

    I do if he doesn’t.

  • Redd

    So the Lakers?

  • LakeShow

    Good deal.

Hopefully LA get’s some young talent to mesh in with he, Kobe, and Nash for the next couple years.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yes

  • shockexchange

    *Sgt Schultz*

  • leavei

i like that your latest news, has nothing to do with the latest news.

  • http://www.facebook.com/zer02hero15 James Franco Guerta

I think the Magic can throw some deal for him next year ^_^

  • Caboose

Just because Dwight says he “knows” where he’s signing next year doesn’t mean he’s committed to anything. Like, at all.

  • shockexchange

Yeah, it’s funny how guys drop hints and women think it means “He’s gonna put a ring on it,” but he actually means a sweater, or a vest or something.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol, he’s signing with the Lakers. You don’t gotta worry.
    .
Whether he signs with the Lakers and is immediately traded to Brooklyn? Entirely different conversation.
    .
Other then that, teams with money wise, only Dallas/Atlanta/Phoenix will be able to offer him a deal. All of which will be $30M less then what LA offers

  • LakeShow

It’s funny that people don’t see the inevitable.

  • LakeShow

  • shockexchange

Let’s keep it one hunnerd, you tryna negotiate with the Shock Exchange is like Kwame Brown tryna negotiate with George Mikan. There’s a reason there’s a “Mikan Drill” and not a “Kwame Brown Drill.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, in their, especially Caboose’s tortured soul’s, defense, Dwight is crazy.

  • Caboose

Haha he’s signing with LA, don’t worry.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

are you under the impression that people find you to be more than humorous?

  • Caboose

And yes, Dwight is crazy. He wounded my soul. Haha nah, he’s just very vacillating in what he wants and has a large gap between what he does and what he says he does.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes, but you are a very intelligent individual. you know what Dwight is going to do before he does it. Just like you should have with the Orlando situation.

  • LakeShow

    I’m keeping it one hunnerd…

You can’t imagine having to shut your got damn hole for a minute is the dilemma here.

I have a feeling you wouldn’t take a bet that involved shutting up if your family’s life depended on it… but, if you think you can’t win, I understand.
Not allot of confidence in your own opinions…

  • LakeShow

    Bat sh*t.

  • Caboose

….it means I’m very good at lying to myself as well ;)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    haha touchè

  • LakeShow

Reminds me of this guy from the movie Heavyweights…

  • kenny

There’s a lot of hate in your posts towards him. I bet he banged your chick, otherwise its not normal for you to be so emotional about a stranger on a message board.

  • bill

He’s not even the best center in LA.

  • bill

Who can sign him for more, and is in major media market?

  • LakeShow

So your willing to make a bet?
Finally a man willing to take a bet.

  • SuperAr82

    here we go again

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Hansen/618510464 Lars Hansen

Nah, I’m no idiot. But given the money, the attention and everything else, Dwight is more of a coat hanger than anything else right now. LakeShow, do uou feel he’s performing at a levem where we should be happy with him? Do you feel that he is all that he could and should be?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Hansen/618510464 Lars Hansen

    Yeah, that’s a funny name.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Hansen/618510464 Lars Hansen

Oh, and please point out the spelling mistakes I made thanks to my phone.

  • LakeShow

No, but neither is the rest of the team. Plus he had off season surgery.
He is playing fine which is good enough until the ducks are lined up.
He shouldn’t be judged till he is allowed to play how this team wants him to play, which is pick n roll with Nash.

  • Drew

    Shut up Dwight

  • Max

    LOL

  • Max

    Hahahah

  • Max

    The f*ck dude..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

In 200 years basketball wil have fallen out of popularity as a sport because of the rise of contact badminton. The underground people that still play ball (it will be like a hipster thing) will probably only remember Lebron, MJ and Scal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

haha nope he is just really, really annoying

  • J-Ro

Joakim Noah and luol deng for Dwight and Artest?

  • Max

    Don’t wowwy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

we shall see on Dec. 20

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    lol now that’s just silly

  • Max

Hmh, shouldn’t it go like this?
Orlando reach finals –> Lakers win chips –> Miami win a chip –> Suns get your knees fixed –> Cleveland try to win a chip for Andrew Wiggins –> Celtics Just because.

  • Redd

I don’t normally defend Lake but you’re an idiot. Quit listening to Chief Keef kid, you’re a lame.

  • LakeShow

    lol…
Best part is someone out there up votes this guy…

  • LakeShow

    I’m not that kinda nazi…

I just didn’t understand, nor appreciate, you calling the best center in the L a coat hanger.

  • mhm

    it’s one hunned…. jus sayin

  • mhm

LLOLOL i agree completely. these are the barkleys and stephen a smiths of the site

  • Max

He probably has like 5 accounts or something like that.

  • mhm

    lol wow

  • mhm

Dwight jus want the reporter to shut up bout off season I’m sure he doesn’t know what he’s gonna do for free agency

  • mhm

No one even mentioned Dallas or Houston

  • mhm

James Harden n Dwight together can make some noise

  • LakeShow

I truly think he does, because even on the internets, no one should agree with the nonsensical BS this dood spills.

  • LLC#12

Haha, as impressive as that is, they probably aren’t average joe’s! I meant more that in a wider population beyond diehard sports fans, MJ would still be somewhat memorable.

  • Max

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nFAK8Vj62WM
Question, Of which NBA player does this remind you?
If u get it right the score is 1 – 1.
You only get one chance, and it’s really not that hard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

LMAO Dwight. People remember you as a name on one of their favorite championship roster… MAYBE. If you ever stop whining and win. Other than that, you’re nothing special. You think you’re Bill, Wilt, MJ, Magic, Shaq or Kobe?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, depending on how you are looking at it, only the wider American Population knows who Michael Jordan is.

  • Dingo

“You should really read the whole thing” man I would but Im trying to get some enjoyment watching basketball rather than personalities like this, seriously there have been some shockers over the years but this guy takes the cake.

  • http://www.facebook.com/francis.aboy Francis Aboy

at least they get a healthy point guard out of it.

  • shockexchange

    Touche’

  • manhandled

One of my all-time favorites: Gladiator. Russel Crowe

  • LLC#12

I don’t know, outside of America, I’d still say he’s probably top 5-10 most well known athletes in the world. In 100 years time, If you asked someone to name a 20th century basketball player, if they knew one, it would probably be MJ. Dwight is being ridiculous though, in 200 years, barely anyone will remember any current NBA player, if the NBA/basketball is even still in existence in 200 years.

  • LakeShow

I’m normally good at these “Animal mishap equates to what person questions”, but i’m stuck…

I woulda said Bynum, but that penguin got up after the spill.

I woulda said Paul Pierce, but no one juked him into the fall.

    JJ Redick?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’m just trolling at this point.

  • LLC#12

    job well done

  • Max

Wrong, he’s 7+ feet and was a former lottery pick.

  • dfields

guys like jordan,kobe,lebron..I think they will be remembered forever..especially kobe and jordan..and it depends how lebron finish out is career..Kobe is know all over the world..thats why he had the num 1 jersey in China,Europe and of course the U.S..Kobe and and jordan will not be forgotten, thats forsure

  • aotearaw

    SUCH.A.BLOWHARD

  • kwamepooh

unless they move some pieces dallas and phoenix wont be having enough cap space. atlanta cleveland utah and houston can spend a lot of money and if cp3 is not resigning wit the clips they have some space too. so i guess its gonna be a sign and trade.

  • whatever

aka white mamba aka slug aka trillest

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dallas and Phoenix will both have enough room for a max contract. Dallas will have enough room for 2 of them. Only Dirk is under contract for next season in terms of significant contracts.

  • Bored

who cares anymore. Lakers are one of the most boring teams this year. so much better ball being played at the moment, by other teams. Dwight is a great player but im sick of hearing about his BS!

  • LakeShow

Oh that’s easy then: “Shawn “the b*tch” Bradley”!!

  • coggie13

He could be talking about endorsements for all we know.

  • kwamepooh

i think we are both wrong. youre right dallas has the money but probably only for one max contract. next to dirks 22 and carters 3 millions they have marion. because as far as i know marion has an early termination option and im pretty sure he wont use it because hes making 9 million next season. well at least thats what i would do lol

  • Max

No cmon man, it happened this season.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASKtoOFbfeY
    NO 2
On the the Game right now.

  • LakeShow

Dude I missed that highlight altogether, if I would have seen it I would have known it.

  • Max

Hah allright, Lakers are getting embarrased right now..

  • danpowers

hmmmmm… its just halftime but i think i can ask that already: lakers fans you mad?

  • kenny

Hey look it’s the kid whose opinion nobody around here respects. Go sit down and play. I saw how you got flamed a few days ago, dummy.

  • Redd

Flamed? You must be a white boy. If you’re discussing the Africa socio-political discussion 1) that’s not basketball 2) nobody dropped a gem on me. Sit down.

  • Junkie

    thank you captain obvious

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Hansen/618510464 Lars Hansen

Truth is, I’m frustrated more than anything. I’m a Laker fan and I’m just frustrated. A coat hanger is a stretch, I’ll admit, but To see them go from last year to this…it does hurt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    *cough* ^fagg *cough*

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

In my eyes the only realistic option is the Lakers….can you imagine though if he left? Kobe playing out his last year or two with no one yikes

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s my bad about Phoenix. I didn’t realize Scola was 2 years, and i didn’t account for Channing Frye. – out of sight, out of mind.

.Dallas will have about $22M, so yes, we are both wrong. They can sign a max, plus another mid level player without making any moves.

  • LakeShow

Halftime? Do you consider towards the end of 1st quarter halftime?

Mad is the wrong word altogether. Lakers fans are use to winning. We don’t like not winning. This sucks, but if your an intelligent basketball fan or even half of that, you realize that the Lakers don’t have two all stars and the former 2-time-MVP in THIS system. This is system is the third one they have learned this season. They have their third coach of the year. They have new players on the team that haven’t played in this system before. There’s a million excuses for the Lakers woes right now, I won’t keep going.

Mad for starters implies “crazy – insane – lunatic – demented – wild – rabid”

No, we are none of those things. At least i’m not. I’m flustered would be the better word…

I know what’s around the corner though.

  • danpowers

my typo. whatever, that game was over after the first quarter lol

yes you guys are spoiled by being used to winning and having all star loaded rosters on the team you are rooting for. this stretch is just what you need :D

we all know what is around the corner. if the turnaround wont happen this season, it will happen next year or the year after. la will always attract nice free agents and good staff personell, talent couts included. no la fan should ever be worried.

was still nice to see the knicks torching the lakers until anthony went down.

and btw, its not so much about the players to adjust to dantonis system. the question is: can he adjust his system to the players on his roster. when he was in ny he couldnt. the big fella feat. the old folks need to play slow paced halfcourt basketball. we will see if the pringles man is the right guy for that

  • LakeShow

Thought you were talking about the season not the game… Geez, really you talking about RS games again? No no one is mad about the Knicks. Everyone is actually enjoying watching them right now. Myself included.
They are playing great team ball and it’s hard to hate on that.
    Whats the word on Melo?

  • danpowers

i ask that after every win without any bad afterhought ;) so…. u mad? lol

he is just a little sore and questionable for next game but so far they just checked him manually and said tht all is still where it should be

  • danpowers

    lol

  • LakeShow

Nice, that’s good. I hope the Knicks play well all year and take the East.

  • danpowers

me too man, me too. it has been a long drought lol

  • kwamepooh

nice we figured it out lol have a nice one

Mike D’ Antoni is well known to bench star players (DNP – coach’s decision) to stroke his ego especially when he wants to get rid of a player and/or force general managers and owners hand to make a trades. Examples: Stephon Marbury, Pau Gasol, Tracy McGrady, Antawn Jamison, Nate Robinson, Eddie Curry, etc.
