Dwight Howard Screamed at Kobe Bryant About His Poor Defense

Kobe Bryant doesn’t always put forth maximum defense effort — and hasn’t done so for a few years — which got under the skin of his new teammate. Dwight Howard yelled at Kobe last night about not providing him with help on rotations. Reports the OC Register: “Not too many people would dare point a finger toward Kobe Bryant’s face and back it up with strong words. Dwight Howard did that Wednesday night to take a stand regarding the Lakers’ need to help each other on defense — specifically for Bryant to help Howard — and came away concluding it did a lot of good. ‘I don’t have a problem with saying anything to anybody, and it should be that way,’ Howard said after the Lakers’ victory over New Orleans. ‘We have to be able to talk to each other. We’re a team. We’re a family. And the more chemistry we develop that way, the better we’ll be as a team.’ Twice in the first quarter, Howard was visibly upset after he moved over to provide help defense against Hornets point guard Greivis Vasquez, but no one — specifically Bryant — rotated over to help cover Howard’s assigned man, Hornets center Robin Lopez. The first time, Howard looked back at Bryant with an anguished look on his face and gestured at him after Lopez scored for a 12-7 New Orleans lead. Three-plus minutes later, Vasquez penetrated past Chris Duhon again, Howard shifted over to help again, and Lopez was left all alone again with Bryant toward the corner near Roger Mason instead of in the paint. Lopez scored for an 18-14 Hornets lead, and although Earl Clark was the Laker in best position to help Howard, he yelled at Bryant about it — prompting Bryant to yell back at Howard and gesture back. After two recent games Howard has complained about going over to help others on defense but no one rotating to help cover his man. Houston backup center Greg Smith had 21 points Tuesday night in a Lakers loss, and Howard attributed it to that ongoing problem.”

“Kobe Bryant doesn’t always put forth maximum defense effort — and hasn’t done so for a few years”
    -
Yet he’s on the all-nba defensive teams.. Sigh..

  • mrggacartier

kobe needs that kind of motivation aswell as the hold lalakers team

  • ChosenOne

SLAM have always had a grudge against Kobe… yet never hesitate to put him on their cover.
    Reason?? He makes them $$$.

  • Mvp23100

I like this as much as Dwight’s been screwing up Kobe is not above criticism especially when he’s quick to give it Stevie can see he’s a couple steps slow on D and its lack of effort not age

  • Max

What does that have to do with it?

    I don’t think Kobe’s been a consistent two-way player since 2007…

  • ToldUso

beefin with kobe? whats next, shaq biter, you gonna gain 100lbs?

I’m glad he did this. Kobe is pretty lazy on defense nowadays. I know he pretty much gave up on rotating during the Houston game, leaving Toney Douglas wide open for 2 three pointers during crunch time.

    What?

ahaha I forgot about the “ship his ass out” fiasco. Good times.

  • ChosenOne

You appeared concerned by SLAM’s remark about Kobe’s D, despite the fact he’s on the All-defensive teams… I was just explaining why they did make that remark. That’s all. Yes, Kobe has lived on the All-defensive teams rent free for a couple years now…. but still…. the dude can still lock ‘em up when he wants to..

  • ChosenOne

..and my point about him being on the cover…. well… I was just stating the hypocrisy of SLAM at times (I still love y’all though) when they seem to hate Kobe a lot, yet ‘use’ him to sell copies…

  • Max

Oh, I know Kobe should not be on there.

  • S-Swagg613

SLAM IS THE TRUTH! I give it to Kobe hes a very intelligent player which makes up for hes lack of defensive effort. He never plays hes man tight which gives the offensive players room to manover around him than hes upset when Gasol, Bynum, Howard doesn’t block the shot them at the rim. He’s also always late on rotation or at times if you watch him doesn’t bother to even run out at the shooter.

Kobe has this attitude where on defensive its not hes job to play team defense while on offense if anybody else takes a bad shot they should be publicly scouled ex: Smush, Gasol, etc

  • zogs19994

KOBE JUST TRIES TO READ THE DEFENSE TOO MUCH…
    FOR EXAMPLE:
LAST NIGHT, HE LEFT HIS MAN WIDE OPEN IN THE CORNER TO STEAL THE BALL FROM AUSTIN RIVERS, AND GOT THE FASTBREAK DUNK.
    -
    SOMETIMES IT WORKS….SOMETIMES IT DOES’NT
AS LONG AS HE DOES’NT DO IT IN CLUTCH MOMENTS….I’M FINE WITH IT

    OKAY THANKS FOR THAT INSIGHT

  • RallyMonkeyUSA

good for Dwight. As a laker fan, Kobe needs to be held accountable. Dwight is a defensive guru, and if anyone can tell kobe to d up its Dwight. Great job dwight.

  • Lorne

I’M NOT YELLING!!!! THIS IS HOW I TALK!!!–Samuel Adams Jackson

  • robb

I’m a big Kobe fan but Dwight is right. He’s been making a lot of defensive mistakes, specially the last two games.

  • pposse

Kobe was never the same defender after PJ Brown dunked on him in the finals!

Below exemplifies why Kobe will never rotate on a big again. PJ freakin Brown!!

  • LakeShow

    Awesome, keep it up Dwight!
Someones gotta get that boy in line.

  • Junior Taylor

And Kobe will still find his way onto another undeserved all-defense selection.

  • TV63

Good Somebody had to say it. Kobe isn’t the only one who gets to criticize. Give it right back at him, Howard!!

  • pposse

LOL ^ that is not I

LMAO…WHY AM I YELLN’? Funny stuff there Lorne.

  • Caboose

Better guard defenders than Kobe last year:

    T. Allen, Seflosha, Rondo, Paul, Jrue, Lowry, Iguodala, Brewer, Turner, Conley, George, Shumpert, Wade, Westbrook. I’m still missing a good amount, I bet.

  • Ugh

This is true, but he’s in a backseat compared to Iverson. As soon as that dude lost an inch out of his step the press rolled him into a carpet and tossed him off a bridge.

    true

anybody that can yell at kobe i applaud, don’t see that too often

  • brian

Maybe Dwight was right. Kobe should know how to improve his defense, but dwight should also listen to kobe about his free throw issues. Kobe’s teaching him the techniques and he ignored it. :/ It should be a give-and-take relationship. :D But I trust Kobe’s instinct despite of his defense issues. Obviously, I am his fan. :)

  • Coach D’

IF KOBE ROTATES FROM THE CORNER TO LOPEZ, THAT TWO POINT LAY UP/DUNK BECOMES A ROGER MASON TRIPLE. CAN’T LEAVE THE SHOOTER IN THE NBA. PICK UR POISON. SIDESHOW BOB OR SNIPER?

It’s about time Kobe misses out on the All-NBA Defensive Team. He has been there, undeservedly, for the past 4 years. But that’s Kobe – the myth that is perpetuated by the media spin and ignorant “fans.” But like all things surrounding the Lakers, I am sure he can absolve himself of fault on this end of the floor as well. #mostoverratedplayeralltime

Yes, or more recently LeBron. I’d like to see Kobe be able to succeed with half of the vituperation that Bron has received over his career. Certainly, they both get adulation as well as detraction, but for Kobe it is largely adulation. If the media truly derided him, he would become more of a headcase.

Gotta stop people in the paint as a priority stupid. There’s another rotation stupid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/spencer.wen.1 Spencer Wen

He’s all-nba defense because he’s still got the ability to lock down players. However, his age means that he can’t put forth maximal effort on both ends of the court anymore.

Personally, despite him being my favorite player, I don’t think he deserved to be all-nba defensive first team for the past few years, and that last season was a good judgment call: putting him on the second team for defense.

  • JL

If contracts started (I don’t know if it is already) to be have clauses or bonus incentives based on some defensive stats, I bet alot of players would try harder.

  • SHAM JAM

Lol hes 34 years old give him a break

  • http://www.facebook.com/SGWhiteZ Gary White

I don’t think Kobe’s been a consistent two-way player dating back to the first season just after Lakers June, 2002 NBA Championship (their 3-peat championship) which was vs. New Jersey.

Uhhh…”Jordan Wannabe”/”Ballhog That Can’t Lead A Team On His Own”/”Will Never Win 1 Without Shaq”/”Rapist”/”Terrible Teammate”/”Is Too Old To Still Be A Scoring Threat” (Since 2009) & Etc….The Criticism & Hate That Kobe’s Received From The Media Is What Made Him Strive So Hard To Prove The Critics Wrong…The Media Has LOVED LEBRON Since He Came To The League…They Just Bashed Him Whenever The Playoffs Came & He Failed…But He Was Loved To The Fullest Throughout The Season…Until He JOined The Heat…Haha

Dwyane Wade Is A Horrible Guard Defender…He’s A GOOD SHOTBLOCKER But He’s Not Much Of A Defender…Conley’s Good With PG’s But He Can’t Stop Any SG’s…I Think Westbrook Is Pretty Underrated As A Defender But Other Than That…Solid List

  • KevJack

Yeah, Dwight doesn’t mind saying anything to anybody really Dwight??? Is that why you were whining when Kobe was getting in your ass about holding the ball in the post and not making your free throws OR practicing your free throws or when Kareem Abdul Jabbar tried to help better your game?? Yeah right Smh!!!

  • Pupil Bob

the 3pt shot is a lower % shot compared to a layup coach
