Kobe Bryant Calls This the Best LA Clippers Team Ever

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

The best record in the NBA, 17 wins in a row, a perfect 16-0 mark in December, and an endless collection of highlight reel plays. Welcome to the new, incredible LA Clippers Experience.

The Lakers, who have reigned supreme forever in Los Angeles basketball, have certainly noticed the tear their neighbors are on, and they are indeed very impressed.

According to Kobe Bryant, this is the best Clipper team he has ever seen.

From the LA Times and ESPN:

Yep, the Clippers have arrived. Even the Lakers have to acknowledge them now. “We have to reckon with them. They’re kind of setting the bar where we’ve got to get to,” Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni said.

“That’s extremely impressive to put together win streaks that are that long,” Kobe Bryant said. “It shows a lot of focus, it shows a lot of ability and a lot of depth because they can beat you multiple ways. They have a lot of guys that are just willing to play their roles … They’re very familiar with each other,” Bryant said. ” … It seems like they slapped a lot of talent together, which they did, but a lot of those guys have been together before.” [...] When asked if the current Clippers team was the best he’s seen in his 17 seasons as a professional basketball player in L.A., Kobe Bryant replied: “I don’t think it’s a question about it.”

The season is still young, but what LA’s “other team” has accomplished up to this point is remarkable. Whether they are the best squad in franchise history, though, remains to be determined.

The Clippers’ winning streak will face its greatest challenge this week — Lob City travels to Denver and Golden State (for a tough back-to-back), followed by consecutive games against the Lakers and Warriors.

CP3 and Kobe in the same backcourt would have been a lot of fun to watch.

  • PippenAintEasy

But Stern burnt down that hope.

  • The Joker

Good news for L.A.L. fans: they got rid of the bandwagoners!
Bad news for L.A.L. fans: they got rid of the dominance as well.

Kidding aside, it’s great that KB recognizes a good team.

  • Hursty

It probably is. That 05/6 team was pretty good too. Sam I Am, Brand, Maggette, Kaman and Mobley. Livingston off the bench. They had a solid chance to beat the Suns in the Conference Semi’s.

This current team is better though, deeper, more athletic and more shooters.

  • LobCity

Stern made the right move. Imagine allowing that trade and giving the Hornets a fat/unmotivated Odom and Kevin Martin? Eric Gordon, Kaman (1 yr rental), Aminu and a pick (Austin Rivers) was a better package…..And people still complain they should have held out for Eric Bledsoe too! A trade to the Lakers would have the worst trade ever for the Hornets. The only part that sucks is that both the Lakers & Rocket fan bases got c*** teased with the trade. Right move though.

  • hushabomb15

I love @CP3 yet the Clippers unis are ugly and I will never buy one. Just wait until Chauncey comes back

Right trade or not, the fact that the commissioner of the league owned a team was a huge conflict of interest. As commissioner, he has an agenda. He implemented his plan as commissioner and controlled where a player was able to go and play. Big problem. People said he didn’t want Chris and Kobe on one team making a super team. As owner, he was able to stop that from happening. To reject a trade offer that is made to you is one thing. To retract a deal that was already in place made by the GM of the Hornets is another. It was ridiculous. It might have been the right move now that we’ve seen what the organization has done since. They got two top 10 picks including the number 1 pick. But for that time, the outrage was justified. Each team knew what they were doing and had it done. Players were prepared to move. Stern stopped it and didn’t offer that great of an explanation for it as usual. Whether the players were motivated and in shape doesn’t mean anything here. It’s simply the fact that the commissioner was able to stop a deal that GMs worked on and wanted. And even now we can look at how the Hornets look. Eric Gordon just played his first game. Austin Rivers has been disappointing at best. Anthony Davis hasn’t played much but may turn into a star. The GM had a plan and put it into place only to have the commissioner stop him. And the Lakers now have a roster that’s more talented than the one they would have had if that Chris Paul trade had gone through the way it was supposed to.

  • Anthony Dixon

nah no way.. kobe and cp3 wouldn’t mesh

  • Anthony Dixon

cp3 on the hornets was beautiful…

  • spit hot fiyah

that 05 06 team was so much fun to watch. amazing that livingston has played in the nba after that injury

  • LobCity

Conflict of interest, yes, but not an excuse. The Hornets were owned by the NBA and each owner approved Stern being in the position of power. They probably overlooked the veto power on trades but that’s their bad. A trade was developed by the GMs, but in most organizations the owner gets the final word because no GM is really allowed to freely spend/trade millions without supervision. In this case it was Stern. Look at the trade: Odom(based on his last yr w/LA not the pig in DAL): a sixth man having a down year & Kevin Martin: an overpaid scorer. Both had big contracts with at least 2 years on it. They weren’t even getting the 2nd best player in the trade (Gasol)! If the goal is to sell the team immediately, then it wouldn’t be smart (for basketball reasons) to take bad contracts that will likely give you mediocre results. You’re either competing for championships or you’re blowing it up. Hornets fans wont show up for a mediocre team and it’s all about the $$$. So IMHO, the right move was to decline the trade. Now if the GM/personnel leaked the info and people THOUGHT it was a done deal, well that’s not Stern’s problem. As for the super team notion, I don’t buy it. So long as there’s not a hard cap they will find ways to lands starts. I’m sure Stern realizes this too being the commissioner for so long . Now if you don’t want Stern making the decision, then what’s the alternative? Having all 29 owners vote? Well that sounds like a conflict of interest and I’m pretty sure the other owners would decline giving away CP3. The package that was then proposed by the Clippers (at the time, not looking back): Gordon (1yr) & Aminu (2yrs) on rookie contracts, Kaman’s expiring contract, and Minnesota’s (before Rubio blew up) unprotected 1st rd pick. It was a mix of youth, talent, prospects and flexibility. So he turned down one trade for a better trade. Sounds like what a good owner is supposed to do. Again, people need to see Stern acting as Owner not as a commissioner that stepped in to block a GM. Blame the owners including Dr. Buss for putting him in that position.

I am happy the Clippers are finally able to keep some talent and put together a stacked roster…I’ve been a Clipper fan since ’99 and this is the most entertaining team since back in the day when they had LO, Maggette, Brand, Darius Miles, Q Rich, Dooling, Rooks, etc.

  • The Philosopher

Right now, at this moment, Chris Paul is not only the best point guard in the world, not only is he the best leader in the League, but, he is also the NBA’s M.V.P.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Who couldn’t mesh with Chris Paul? He can play any style of game. Any system. They wouldn’t have played well together? That must be why Kobe was so excited that he had arranged to pick Chris up at the airport himself before Stern canceled the trade. If Nash and Kobe can work, Paul and Kobe would work. Paul actually plays defense so he and Kobe would probably work better.

  • Caboose

If Kobe can’t mesh with CP3, what does that say about Kobe?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

he’d probably get hurt again.. right away

  • RKJ92

There’s nothing funny about that he’s leading this team like a true superstar.. Paul is amazing he’s carrying a team of 30 year olds, and 3 youngins, in Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and Eric Bledsoe, on a streak we haven’t seen since the 08′-09′ Celtics you ignorant waste cyatty

  • RKJ92

  • bill

    You forgot to add “ni66a!”

  • manhandled

He would within 1 or 2 weeks. It`s time to let Billups go. He has shot under 40% for the last 2 seasons. People been saying wait until Billups gets back for a season and half and every time he comes back he gets hurt. He`s been out for long stretches at a time. Clippers are good without him. A 17-game winning streak good. This should be Billups final season.

Ok, first off the only thing you can laugh at was Philo’s statement NOTHING else, secondly my country has nothing to do with “how were made” and thirdly, I did nothing hypocritical your just trying to make yourself sound intelligent, and sadly it made you look plain naive misusing a simple word..

  • Redd

    Lol wow.

It wasnt hypocritical to call me ignorant yet come at me for simply saying “lol”?

How are those Raptors doing anyways?

  • Kevin

Right now, at this moment… I agree with you

  • RKJ92

  • Mackenzie

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin by themselves make this the best Clippers team ever. Having their depth and defensive mindset is the icing on the cake.

  • Mackenzie Kerridge

Deron Williams! haha jk Cp3 for MVP

  • Ugh

Really? The Clippers team that won 17 games in a row is better than all the other Clippers teams? How did this article get printed? Kobe should have answered with “What a stupid f$%#in’ question, of course they are.”

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    hopefully good one

  • Max

Which might not be good if the pick is anywhere from 4-14
