Kobe Bryant Considers Carmelo Anthony the ‘Most Difficult’ Player to Guard

In a league full of super-human athletes, Kobe Bryant gives Carmelo Anthony (who he’ll face tonight in New York) the nod as the NBA’s toughest cover. Per the NY Post: “The Lakers star said Anthony, the Knicks’ MVP candidate, is the ‘most difficult’ guy for him to guard in the league, even harder than LeBron James, he told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on Tuesday. ‘For me?’ Bryant said. ‘Yeah.’ Bryant called Anthony, who is averaging 27.7 points per game this year, ‘a bull’ and says he ‘does it all.’ … ‘I’m [180 pounds] soaking wet,’ said Bryant. ‘Going up against that bull, it’s fun, but it’s hard.’ As for the Knicks, Bryant said they’re playing right now ‘with a belief.’ … ‘They believe that they deserve to be in the championship conversation,’ Kobe said.”

Yeah, I’ve heard him say this before about Melo. I remember one time he also said Reggie Miller was very tough to guard.

  • you’re wrong

I’m sorry, but KD cannot do everything better than Melo. KD is a much better pure shooter, especially from long distance, but he does not have anywhere NEAR the post game that Melo has. And I’d argue Melo’s face-up, mid-range game is better than KD’s. Thisis not to say I think Melos is a better player than KD, but Melo’s offensive game is way more diverse than KD’s. KD is simply longer and more athletic.

melo post game >>> kd post game

lol Melo is probably the best pre scorer in the L

Melo is a more physical player by a far measure.. Melo will punish smaller players by bullying them towards the hoop, which I suppose is seen by Kobe as ‘harder’ to guard that KD who is more likely to beat you with his length and his finesse moves.

Oh yeaa and Kobe only weighs 180? that’s BS.. I’d say he left out about 25 pounds.

  • Mansek

    Does he guard?

  • shutup

Whens the last time KD went through somebody’s chest? KD is great but he doesn’t posses the physicality that Melo does.

Who cares what Horry Jr thinks? Why not focus on somebody who’s actually going to make the playoffs?

I can see that. LeBron doesn’t have the consistent jumpshot that Melo has, so if you lay off LeBron, he won’t make you pay (unless he’s hot). If you muscle up on KD, he’ll accept launching 30-footers. Problem with that is he’ll actually make them sometimes, but of course you would live with that over him shooting anything closer right over you. Melo has no offensive weakness, and can and will take whatever you give him.

What superstar guards another for more than the occasional play unless they’re known for defense? Minus maybe Kobe on Westbrook last year, or Lebron on Rose in 2011. Also, Bean guarded Melo more than occasionally during the 2009 WCF.

That’s cause nobody wants to run around chasing another player off screens.

Trevor Ariza guarded Melo the VAST majority of that series. And Melo shot like 40%, he wasn’t very dominant at all even if Kobe did guard him, which he really didn’t do that much.
Well it depends on the superstar matchup but for the most part that is correct. Which doesn’t change anything, just because most superstars don’t guard each other doesn’t mean that their opinions are somehow more justifiable. that doesn’t make any sense.

Kevin Durant is clearly a tougher cover tho. who cares who can do more, Durant is the better scorer. way way way way way way way better.

  • Geech

How is he a better scorer? And a clearly tougher cover?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Look at his scoring numbers and shooting %. Melo has never done the things Durant does….annually .
Kevin Durant is the most efficient volume scorer ever. By a good margin. He even blows Larry Bird and Michael Jordan out of the water as crazy as that sounds.
