Kobe Bryant Says He’ll ‘Kick Everybody’s Ass’ if Lakers Don’t Improve

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Prior to the start of the season, this is not how anyone pictured things going for the Los Angeles Lakers, after all of the splashy moves they made in the summer.

They weren’t supposed to fire their coach just five games into the season, they weren’t supposed to play without Steve Nash for this long, and they most certainly weren’t supposed to lose to the hapless Orlando Magic at home (giving up 40 fourth-quarter points in the process.)

And yet, here we are.

Naturally, Kobe Bryant is infuriated by his team’s struggles, and says it’s time for everyone — especially Pau Gasol — to toughen up, or else there will be hell to pay.

Per Fox Sports:

“I’ll kick everybody’s ass in this locker room if it doesn’t happen,” Bryant said after a 113-103 loss to the Orlando Magic at Staples Center. Yes, the 6-10 Orlando Magic. “It’s the attitude you have to have. Metta (World Peace) is the same way. Dwight (Howard) has it in him as well. Even though he smiles a lot, he cares a lot about this. Come hell or high water, this has to get done.”

“Pau has to make some adjustments, obviously, to his game. He might not be posting up as much as he likes, but he just has to adjust. The reality is, I’ve adjusted. I’ve never run this many screen-and-rolls in my entire life. But I’ve worked on it. I’ve worked on handling the ball; worked on coming off screens and making plays. I’m used to being in the post much, much more. You have to adjust; you have to master what it is we’re trying to do here. Pau’s talented enough and good enough to be able to do that.” [...] “Put your big-boy pants on,” Kobe said with a trace of disgust in his voice. “C’mon … just adjust. You can’t whine about it or complain about it. Heck, I’m 34 years old, and I’m running screen-and-rolls out there because Steve (Nash) is out, and my ass is running up and down the court more than I ever have in my entire career. But you have to adjust to it. I stay after practice and work on my ball-handling and screen-and-rolls, and when you have the talent to adjust to it, you just … have … to … adjust … to … it. We’re not going to lose (Pau). This is just not going to happen. I’ve been around him long enough to know how to deal with him.”

The last comment from Bryant regarding Gasol sounds like a threat … which probably isn’t too far from reality.

Pau is posting career lows in points (12.6ppg) and field goal accuracy (42%), and generally looks lost in coach Mike D’Antoni’s offense. He was on the bench late in the fourth quarter last night, as the Lakers suffered their latest humiliating loss.

Kobe Bryant’s threats of violence notwithstanding, it promises to be one long, strange season in Los Angeles.

As if Laker struggles are simply because of one person. What about defense?

I would wait a little longer before I throw a teammate under the bus in public.
Do what you have to do and tell your teammates what they need to be told in practice, but not in the media.

  • nick

yeah it would also help if the bench could contribute more than one game

pau, meeks, and jordan hill, for josh smith, lou williams and pachulia

Meeks and Hill should be playing, don’t know what D’Antoni is doing. Like I said, we lost our chance at a championship caliber team when we passed on Phil.

HAVE FUN KICKING DWIGHT’S ASS LOL

Kobe does realize Pau is playing through injury right? However, I do think he’s saying this stuff to light a fire under him and not just to complain about a crappy teammate. That last sentence is very telling. I didn’t see the game last night, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Pau played super lethargic.

Phil did stuff like this in his own ways through the media – Kobe is just very brutally honest with his assessment. Pau usually responds positively to his teammates/coaches questioning him publicly, so we’ll see what becomes of this.

How incredibly stupid would Atlanta be to agree to that deal? Lol. That’s an awful trade for them.

I still don’t know why they hired an up tempo coach for a old a*ss team like this…this is a play in the post, slow it down team.

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

It’s the Lakers, their known to pull stuff like this…all the time…somehow.
It’s well known that they keep a team of trained hitmen in the negotiation rooms.

  • shockexchange

    (D12 voice) “Hello Brooklyn”

  • CP7

Or maybe if dwight could just make free throws none of this would be a problem

  • FLIGHT 9

Look Kobe.. I hate the heat… I like the LAkers BUT everybody knows D’ Antoni is not the coach for you….. By the time your chemistry isn’t an issue your in the 6-8th seed and out in the first round???

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    One name: Chris Childs.

  • pposse

and kobe’s fg percentage dropped another 3% points this past week…

  • spit hot fiyah

i am really looking forward to bryant kicking his own ass as he is included in everybody

  • Max

Their 4th quarter D was the problem.

  • Redd

Haha of enjoy watching Kobe whining cause he feels under threat of not winning a 6th chip. It’s what you get for throwing guys under for so long.

  • Omar

Pau needs to put on his big boy pants…and punch Kobe in the mouth.

  • roscoe

LAC & LAL can’t make free throws and it will cost them throughout the season and playoffs

  • reed o

If RonRon said this than it would mean a lot more than Chris Childs

  • Caboose

Don’t let Arron Afflalo outplay you then.

i like this. everyone, even people within an organization, should overreact when they struggle without their starting PG in a PG centric offense. Because THAT makes sense.

A sucker-punching incident from 12 years ago when Kobe was 22? How relevant!

  • Drig’r

It was the hack-a-howard and lack of D which lost us the game aside from squad rotation by Mike D’Antoni. I fail to understand why he refuses to play Hill……….

Pau was lethargic even by his own standards ( which are much below the L average )…….. He better shape up or it ain’t farfetched to think he’s gonna be shipped out…….

  • RKJ92

Not even just outplay him, but outplay him EFFICIENTLY Damnn… ahaha

  • RKJ92

    Dooooooo itttttttttttttttt!!!

  • RKJ92

    Shhhh…

  • shockexchange

His FG percentage will be down to around 45% – 46% (as usual) by the end of the season, which means he will have to hoist up more shots to keep leading the L in scoring.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

A sucker-punch when Kobe was looking right at him? Watch the video. Kobe threw an elbow. Chris caught him twice while dude was well aware of what was going on.

  • Lakerfan

Where is Phil’s number when you need it the most?

  • Redd

Idk if Dwight will even stay. I doubt he’d like a team with this kind of atmosphere. The dude is into having a good time.

  • Misso

I called it. The grass is not greener on the other side. GO MAGIC!!!

  • shockexchange

Shockism – “Don’t get mixxy if you can’t stand the mix.”

  • Drig’r

Once Nash comes back, we’ll see……

  • shockexchange

Another excuse from Laker Nation … “Wait til Nash comes back, “If we had Phil we would have won the chip,” “Maybe if we had Shaq, or Wilt in their prime …”

  • Salty

Why does Kobe always have to put people on blast to the media? If he said this to Pau behind closed doors, maybe it’d motivate him. Saying it for all the world to hear is just going to make things worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Pau is an easy scape goat, but the problem thus far has been defense (even with Mike Brown) and a terrible bench.

  • Caboose

The argument before D’Antoni came was “Wait till we fire Mike Brown and get an offensive coach like D’Antoni.”

  • Caboose

The grass is stained brown by the pollution of LA. Enjoy your narcissistic teammates who won’t force feed you the ball and stand up for you in all cases.

  • Drig’r

Caboose…….seriously?? So, you just forgot about the insanely long debate we had about how Nash would help Kobe play off the ball more and help him utilize his underrated cutting skills???? BTW, honest question : what happened to the Jordan vs Kobe O discussion we had?? I was kinda eagerly anticipating your reply……….

I never said Nash would be the answer to all our problems. But Kobe ain’t no Nash. He’s holding down the fort like he has over the last decade with his good passing skills but they aren’t in the same stratosphere as Nash’s.

Another thing stat aficionados should look at before bit*hing about Kobe’s efficiency is the rest of the team’s FG%.

Kobe could’ve had above 50% FG% easy but he tried to score and get the game back. That is more than I can say about anyone sans probably Dwight. It backfired splendidly but you can’t question the intent behind that.

  • Caboose

Ok, c’mon, that was a dig at the die-hards, not at you. It’s tongue-in-cheek and you know it. Also, don’t say Kobe could’ve had above 50% FG. He didn’t.

  • Chukaz

Nobody wanted to hire D’Antoni. No laker fan ever said anything about D’Antoni. Laker nation wept when we hired D’Antoni over Phil. D’Antoni’s one of the worst coaches ever. There were people in NY without electricity for days that were happier than the laker fans were when we hired D’Antoni. Its like Jerry got old and everybody forgot how to think.

  • Junior Taylor

How about kicking your own a** first for needing 27 shots to get 34pts and allowing Arron Freaking Affalo to drop 30pts on 60% shooting on your a**? How about looking in the mirror and placing the blame on yourself for once?

  • K_HOLIDAY

The Lake Show (the team not the slam member lol) has officially turned into a disaster thanks to the media and expectations. Not to make excuses for them, but I’ll wait for Nash to get back before I pass judgment on this team. Nash knows the system and is still a top tier point guard in the league. He’s made Phoenix respectable the last few years with way less talent, so if anyone can stabilize this situation, its him.

  • Chukaz

That’s exactly right. Hill’s probably out 4th, maybe 3rd best player right now with nash out and pau struggling and D’Antoni’s hitting him with DNPs. I get he didn’t like Hill in NY but for the love of god, Mike Brown was able to make good use of Hill and Pau. How bad of a coach do you have to be to let Mike Brown make better use of his players?

  • Chukaz

Pau is an easy scape goat because he’s been sucking.

  • Chukaz

tendonitis is not a serious injury. When i was in HS i played and practiced thru tendonitis for 3 straight years. And Kobe’s been playing with torn tendons in his hand for like 4 years.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Mike Brown made better use of Antawn Jamison, Chris Duhon, and Jodie Meeks? No? Not even close? K.

  • Drig’r

My bad then lol. I’ve been given a rough day here after LAL bombed in Q4 and I’m a bit edgy lol……….

Kobe could’ve had 50% FG easy. It’s just that he doesn’t give a damn about his FG% in games he’s losing heavily. Iso-ball resulted in him going 2/5 or 1/5 in the dying moments of the game when everyone else all but gave up on the game. He could’ve just as easily gone through teh motions and preserved his stats. But he tried to start a run. It backfired.

No offence to you man but LAL lost the game rather than ORL winning it because they played in such a lackadasical manner that they deserved an ass whopping IMO. Nobody was running, no marking, no help, no crisp rotations…………nothing…….They looked dead on their feet and this was supposed to be an effing home game with a day of rest in between :X

The team’s so far looking so bi-polar under Mike D’Antoni. Well, except Pau. He’s just grimacing on the bench………

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    THIS. All of this.

  • Drig’r

I wasn’t grimacing or weeping. I was actually looking forward to us having the best O in the L. Then Nash went out.
