Kobe Reportedly Got On Durant, Westbrook’s Nerves During Olympics

According CSNBayArea.com, Kobe’s non-stop talking during the Olympics may have provided the Thunder a little extra motivation against the Lakers on Friday: “…source says the Black Mamba talked relentless smack during the Olympics that the Thunder stars weren’t going back to the Finals after the Lakers acquired Steve Nash and then added Dwight Howard right before the U.S. played Spain for the gold medal. Kobe also made a point of guarding Westbrook during practices and pumping him up, the theory being that he wanted to incite Russ to bump heads with KD over who the team’s best player is. (If you think that’s too conspiratorial to be real, you don’t know Kobe.) KD, in particular, got tired of hearing him. For what it’s worth: KD and Westbrook’s combined 69 points is the highest single-game total they’ve posted this season.”

That’s what great players do. Find motivation in the most minuscule things.

  • Conor

In the vein of MJ, Bird, and Payton.

  • speedy

    Minuscule?

Trash talk and setting teammates against one another. Not so minuscule to me.
Nice, how they shut Kobe up.

  • EP

Nice that you mentioned Payton. He was the man.

No better duo right now then Durant and Westbrook

  • rande3p

    pathetic story

  • Sean B

And it’s really not even close with D-Wade looking like a shell of himself at the present time.

Wow! I don’t care about the trash talking, that’s completely fine with me. But, trying to turn Russ and KD against each other — that’s just a serious punk move.

  • roscoe

so… kd gets upset when kb24 talks smack, but kd is A-OKAY w/ Bron bron running his @ss in the finals.

sounds interestingly ironic. truth is Russ W. ain’t staying in OKC.

    KD is “the sheriff”
What’s a good nickname for Westbrook?

  • OneStep

Kobe still wants to be like Mike.

  • A.

    Deputy.

  • charliewinning

One of my favorite trash talkers of all time. Probably number one.

  • bigA

No way, although at times Westbrook could defer the sheriff more.
    Westbrook is somewhat cutthroat.

How? Its a competition, and Kobe is a cutthroat competitor. If you want to win, you bring your rivals down any way you can. Psychologically, he is trying to get into their heads how other NBA players got into Kobe’s head by saying that he couldn’t win without Shaq.

  • RKJ92

    F*CK YOUR MOTHER

  • Dymez

If you’re an ultimate competitor, you want to go up against the best. You wouldn’t want to weaken a team so they’re easier to beat. Bird never conspired to get Magic to hate Kareem. Jordan never tried to get Starks to hate Ewing. In fact, I remember the year Shaq left Orlando, Jordan said that he should’ve stayed with Penny.

Forever!!!! Lakers don’t look like much now and doubt they will get it together. They aren’t a team just a bunch of stars with huge egos and a very aging Steve Nash.

  • LPD

How do you know? The scrutiny on players today is relentless. “Weaken them” isn’t the right way to put it. Fierce competitors try to get any advantage, no matter how slight, and messing w/ an opponents head is part of that. Why do you think players talk smack to each other during the game? They’re trying to rattle someone’s composure or confidence or push them into losing their temper so they do something stupid. It happens in every sport, including baseball.

  • LPD

Sorry, didn’t finish my first comment. The players you referenced didn’t have the kind of media scrutiny that they do today & more stuff leaks out of clubhouses, too, because of the greater access accorded to the media. So, there’s no way for us to know whether any of those guys did that stuff. But Jordan could, and still does, talk smack with the best of them.

  • Dymez

So what you’re saying is, trash talking another player to throw them off their game is equivalent to planting a seed in another player’s mind (who is currently your teammate going for Olympic gold, mind you) that can literally self destruct an entire team?

A lot of these great players trash talked to get themselves going. Like Jordan, for instance, stories you hear about him was: he’d tell you exactly what he was going to do and then do it. It was up to you to stop him. Or counting down from 40 every time he scored, letting you know how many points he’s about to score from start. Bird would tell you where he’s going to shoot it from. I never heard a story about any of them trying to manually implode the potential opposition. And there were media reports about Stark overshooting, LJ and Zo not getting along, and so on. MJ still didn’t use that. These cats (KD and Westbrook) don’t even like Kobe. MJ is a good friend of almost a the guys he competed against — so you know he wasn’t using these Bush League tactics.

    5 rings

how is that a punk move? were you sheltered as a child? I bet you were the kid getting the honorable mention awards… smh gtfo

  • http://twitter.com/Mini_Mamba Freddy J

MJ is not a good friend of all the guys he competed against what are you talking about. You are an idiot. Ever heard of Isaiah Thomas or Jon Starks. For Christ sakes MJ punched his own teammate Steve Kerr in the face during practice. You don’t know basketball shut your mouth.

  • TZ4

He’s not? Because KD and Scott brooks both love Russ. So unless you’re an OKC exec then I don’t think you know whether Russ is staying or not. It sure looks like he there fr the long haul to me though.

MJ Use to buy his opponents dinner the night before games and smile at them and be nice before ripping their hearts out. It’s called being a competitor not a “punk”

  • Laney

3 belongs to shaq and 2 belongs to gasol and MWP. 6-24 game 7? how Clutch!

funny how Kobe never does anything positive to write about

  • http://www.facebook.com/eddie.lazaro123 Eddie Lazaro

It is funny you said 69 points combined, I was hoping KD or Russ by himself. The other guys record is 81!

  • Real Basketball

you also forgot the 15 rebounds he pulled down that game and the fact that BOTH teams had a horrible shooting night because the defense was that good. And you also forgot to mention that SHAQ wouldn’t have gotten out of the Western Conference if it wasn’t for KOBE BRYANT. When Shaq was benched in the 4th quarter because he was a LIABILITY, who took over the game? KOBE

  • Lee

you are a fucking idiot! this is the dumbest comment ever.

  • shockexchange

the numbers of ups for an idiotic comment really shows the intelligence of the haters around here.

  • Max

Look at Jordan’s stats in the Finals and then Kobe’s. its kinda funny

  • Guest

come up with a better argument. 5 rings literally has nothing to do with Kobe trying to sabotage two players who are currently better than him. & don’t argue that point. As of now, 2013, Durant and Westbrook are BETTER than Kobe.

  • hardwood

5 rings is the only argument any Kobe fan can come up with. what the heck does 5 rings have to do with the fact that Kobe is trying to sabotage two players who are currently better than him. & don’t argue that point. As of now, 2013, Durant and Westbrook are BETTER than Kobe.
