Lakers Reportedly Considering Bringing Pau Gasol Off the Bench

Pau Gasol has been struggling as of late, and though trade rumors were steadily shot down by the Lakers, the LA Times is reporting that the team may be thinking about moving the big man into more of a reserve role: “The Lakers are debating whether to bring Pau Gasol off the bench when he returns from knee tendinitis, said a person familiar with the team’s thinking. Gasol has struggled mightily this season, averaging 12.6 points and shooting only 42%, both career lows. The Lakers are trying to decide how a demotion to the bench would affect Gasol. If they determined it would be adverse, they’d keep him in the starting lineup. It was unclear when Gasol would return, though it could be Sunday against Utah at Staples Center. The Lakers then take off for another road trip, to Cleveland, New York, Washington and Philadelphia. Before Friday’s game, Gasol worked out on an elliptical machine. He has not started running again.”

this is the same guy who gave team usa (and the rest of the world) the business in the olympics. bringing him of the bench probably not going to solve anything. put him in the post where he is the most effective, oh i forgot, d’antoni…

As a Lakers fan I think this would be an excellent move. Gasol doesn’t have an ego problem like some players do when it comes to coming off the bench. Jamison has been playing well as of late and would most likely benefit even more when Nash comes back. Gasol can then anchor the 2nd unit and he can have all the touches he wants in the low post. Mixing him with Meeks,Hill, and Blake could be a good 2nd unit.

Pau Gasol, “the Gimp” of L.A. http://clicky.me/7NVc

Man I’ll take Pau on my team, alongside Noah. But perhaps coming off the bench would help, playing him less will give him some energy and let him be a bit more effective.

    **off the bench

  • Justin05

Blah blah blah. Just start winning games. Aren’t most Laker/NBA fans familiar with the Lakers thinking?

  • Dymez

Man, just trade him already. Bringing him off the bench isn’t going to help. Most people know he isn’t the problem anyway, so free him from this team and give him a real opportunity else where.

I would have rather seen Bickerstaff as the head coach.

    Very logical decision.

He needs to play on the block, at centre, in this offence. That will preserve him for the Playoffs while being a boon not only to him, but for the team in terms of spacing, rotation, and flow. It isn’t as though he won’t be on the court at the end of games… Centre version of Ginobli.

This is the lineup I’ve been using in 2K13 since it came out. Ballstradamus?!

He ran an excellent system. The players seemed to revel in his calm disposition.

”said a person familiar with the team’s thinking” – what a LOSER !? ha ha

Pau need to be on a team that appreciates him. Plays to him not through him.

19 million for a bench player, that’s the trouble with this.
