Los Angeles Lakers Reportedly Spoke to Pau Gasol About a Possible Trade

As soon as Mike D’Antoni was hired to coach the Lakers, fans and media began predicting that Pau Gasol wouldn’t fit in his high-octane offensive system, which would eventually lead to a trade. According to ESPN, the Lakers recently broached the subject with their embattled (and injured) big fella: “Gasol is sitting not because a trade involving the former four-time All-Star is in the works, according to multiple league sources. However, a source said that Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has recently spoken to Gasol’s representatives and the gist of the conversation was that if Gasol is unable to adjust to D’Antoni’s system, the team will have no choice but to search for possible trade scenarios. Their game against the Rockets is the start of a particularly tough stretch for the Lakers — eight of their next 10 are on the road. L.A. is 1-4 away from Staples Center this sason. [...] Kobe Bryant said he could relate to Gasol’s struggles, telling reporters after Tuesday’s shootaround that he had to make a similar decision to sit out late last season when tenosynovitis in his left shin caused him to miss seven games. ‘We talked about it a little bit,’ Bryant said. ‘It’s difficult for him, obviously, because he doesn’t have the explosiveness that he had, so a lot of it I’m assuming has to do with his being injured physically and not being able to get up and down the court and perform at a high level, which could lead to some frustration. I dealt with it with the shin. You’re kind of out there playing around and playing and you kind of wind up being a little bit of a shell of yourself because of your physical limitations.’”

imagine how hated he would be by Clippers fans

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I disagree…I mean the Clippers are arguably in the NBA’s elite crowd…Why would he leave, especially with Blake only in his third year?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

God I would Love that….but what could the Timberwolves offer that the Laker’s would want?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    Kobi?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

what do you think the Lakers should do with Pau?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I don’t think that trade helps the Pistons at all though…they need to rebuild through the draft for AT LEAST 1 more year…free agents are not going to flock there….giving up a solid chunk of their young talent for Pau does nothing for them.

Jalen Rose is without a doubt one of the best analysts around

    disagree

    you’re not thankful!

CP3 is waiting because he can get an extra year/25 million by waiting until this summer. Can’t get that money by signing elsewhere and the CBA doesn’t allow extend and trades (like Melo’s). He bought a 9 million dollar mansion in LA after coming to the Clips. So, it makes sense that he’ll resign considering all the pieces the Clips have under contract for the next few years.
Although there is the chance he leaves. The questions is where? LAL, SAS, MIA, NYK, BKN, OKC, and BOS can’t sign him. So if those aren’t options, what’s better than signing w/ LAC and an extra 25mil?

  • LobCity

And I apply this logic to Dwight Howard too. More money/years from LAL. Kobe and Nash signed for two more years. He bought a mansion in Newport Beach. Where else could he go? I guess Dallas could try to sign him and CP3, but I don’t see it. IMO, no way CP3 and DH don’t resign

  • evilevo

should trade him to the rockets for p patterson and c parsons and some other pices like tony douglas etc give them a decent back up small forward in parsons and p patterson is a decent pf and a good looking line up for rockets as well asik gasol delfino harden and lin

Do you know how important Kobe is to the Lakers? He’s one of the most marketable players in the league, one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, and a brilliant basketball player (I’m usually for civil arguements but no matter what, Kobe is still elite). Without Kobe, the team probably huge numbers of fairweather fans as well as championship aspirations.

  • Matt

He has been adjusting his system to fit his players better… They’ve been running more sets with Pau ducking in to get quick post ups early in the shot clock. Also, coaches RARELY change their entire ESTABLISHED offense midseason. The Lakers obviously brought D’Antoni in for his offensive system, which was to be modified but not completely changed. You characterize D’Antoni as a “stuburn [sic] old man”; however, he’s doing what’s expected of him. Furthermore, you can’t expect a coach who recently found out he was the man for the job to be able to fully integrate players.

  • Matt

Have you seen Amar’e play recently?

  • https://twitter.com/Wayne__o BuenoWayno1

    smh

  • RedDragon10

Well, that’s quite frankly it. I don’t believe cp3 thinks that the clippers are good enough to win a championship. It’s true that Blake’s only in his third year, but we haven’t many seen improvements in his game. He still can’t make a free throw and he’s still a one dimensional player. Does cp3 really think he can win with this crowd? Remember winning seems to be more important to cp3 than the money

  • RedDragon10

Although that may be true, cp3 seems to be more concerned about winning than money. I believe, a few years back, NO could of signed him to a max deal but paul rejected that as well. Place of residency isn’t exactly a reason either. Remember shaq always lived in Orlando, despite leaving for LA, Miami, Phoenix, and Boston. Although I don’t think that cp3 will leave, there’s always a possibility.

Lol. I don’t think you’ve watched Gasol play lately, have you?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

What does you being latino have to do with anything??

  • LobCity

The difference is CP3 has a home in NC, like Shaq had in Orlando, but still went out and bought the home in LA upon being traded to LAC. He could have gotten a condo like he had in NO for his whole career but he didn’t. He bought a home in LA and moved his family there and sold the NO condo. If LA was just a vacation home, well he could have purchased that a long time ago, right? I mention this not because of the dollar value but the commitment it shows.
But even if you want to take location out of the equation and the fact he bought a home, lets look at winning (as you mentioned). Which team that can sign him gives him a better chance of winning?

  • Max

    Aka the dancing robot ninja!

  • Max

Just give it up man, he lives in his own world..

  • RunNGun

Good question… I’m assuming it would involve at least three teams. I’m assuming from Minny’s side, Derrick Williams, draft picks, and one of Minny’s point guards not named Rubio. Williams would make sense for the LAkers; he’s from LA and is a versatile player and can fit into the Pringles Man offense as a pick-and-pop (something Pau can’t seem to do) and a pick-and-roll player with an improving three-point shot.

  • uqk

    language similarity..?

  • Max

Williams and Shved + draft picks?

  • Max

I’ve heard Landry Fields couch had some talent on it last year..

  • Max

    LOLOLOL

  • RunNGun

Like I previously said, it’d have to take possibly another team or two aside from the LAke Show and Minny to make it happen financially/contract-wise. I don’t think Shved would be available but perhaps Derrick Williams (on rookie contract for the next three years) and Pekovic (free-agent to be), and draft picks from Minny. The other teams involved would have pieces that could fulfill the contract/finances side of it. We’ll see if anything comes to fruition by the time December 15 rolls around. A’mare to the Lakers might be interesting as well; looking forward to the next few weeks to see the craziness happen.

How dare you misspell the mambas name

  • http://www.facebook.com/koombuy.pride Koombuy Pride

SHOULD’VE TRADED PAU LAST YEAR.. He’s clearly lost a step i would honestly take Thaddeus Young, maybe carlos boozer and a shooter, maybe an illyosova mix. The Lakeshow need a toughness that Pau will hold them back from. And yes i saw him in those championship years. I also saw Kendrick Perkins punk him when Bynum was out. His skills are diminishing and he never had the intangibles so he’s becoming useless. Mamba knows this..

  • RedDragon10

That’s the point I wanted to make. I don’t really know. One consideration is NYK. If NY gets rid of amare, could it be possible cp3 moves there? Remember that toast at Melo’s wedding? He has shown interest in playing in NYC and with melo. Anything is possible

  • NALF

Trade him already! Either put up or shut up Laker (br)ass. How Pau has endured all the trade rumors starting at the beginning of last season (unlike Odom) shows the class of person he is. It seems like every day there is a new rumor involving Pau. One day he’s the scapegoat, and now that he’s injured, he’s sorely missed! STFU. I hope he is traded because he deserves better than this.

  • mike

lakers need a new coach and a new GM.

  • theeduck2000

A hobbled Gasol would have been nice last night to replace Dwight until it got below the 2 minute mark. Dwight is pathetic at the free throw line. If I was the owner Id pull D’Antoni aside and let him know that next time if Dwight is struggling, pull his ass out the game.

  • LakeShow

    I can’t quit him!

1st of all you nimrod its KOBE and you must be on the best crack money can buy Kobe aint nothing without Pau soft as baby crap dude go jump off a freeway pass asap you sound like a fool!

  • Fall Back Baby

Gasol is playing old. Probably a good time to move him to a team that plays at a slower tempo and that needs a center. Should have a number of solid years left in that type of system. Gasol has been great for the Lakers but age catches up to all of us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I mean you can’t deny the guy has averaged a double double his first 2 seasons in the league without even having any offense run through him….regardless of your personal feelings about him, he is undoubtedly one of the best power forwards in the league

  • LakeShow

I’m okay with keeping him. He’s always a bonus to have on your team.
I just think he needs to play fewer minutes. 32mins or less i’d say.

The only trades I like, seem unrealistic,(Josh Smith) so it’s best just to keep Gasol and hope he can adjust to the style they are going to play.

He’s an excellent passer which we need in this system so I think all will turn out well.

  • Glenn Towery

At last count Pau had how many rings?!…and D’Antoni has?!….Hmm… Something here ain’t right!…Is it possible it could be a coaching problem?!

  • http://twitter.com/DPisWill DePaul Williams

Call me crazy but what if the lakers traded for Amare Stoudemire, then D’Antoni would have Nash and STAT back running his system lol I know thats super unlikely but I thought that was interesting….I remember Minnesota being really interested in Gasol with all of his trade rumors last year, maybe the Lakers would consider taking Minnesota’s athletic wings and draft picks? who knows…

  • wiz

its very true. a good coach results winning ways. Jim Buss & lakers management are mishandling the team because of losing decisions. So who they blame, the players. So very sad to the lakers management.

  • wiz

Its the the lakers management who made these results. everyone predicted championship till bad decisions made these things happened like selecting this Mike(s). Expect more worst case scenarios where lakers won’t make the playoffs.

  • hookedonnews

What? Who’s losing their memory or unable to walk on their own? This is the NBA not the NFL. No one forces these millionaire athletes into these professions. “All people should be equal?” That has no relevance to this conversation. Professional sports is like any other job. If you can’t do the job you’re going to be let go or in the case, traded.

  • hookedonnews

He’s not playing like he played in the Olympics–not even close. Maybe if he had passed on the Olympics he would not be on the bench with tendinitis now. D’Antoni was brought in BECAUSE of his system. He has a lot of talent on the team, but Nash, Blake, and now Gasol are injured, and there hasn’t been time for the team to gel. Gasol cannot live on past achievements. Hopefully once healthy he will adjust and be able to play in the system. If not, he’ll be traded.
