Metta World Peace Says ‘Kobe Show’ is Not Good for the Lakers

According to the always-quotable Metta World Peace, the Los Angeles Lakers can only thrive if everyone is contributing on the offensive end. When Kobe Bryant becomes too dominant (aka, the “Kobe Show”), the team struggles. Metta was pleased to see the offense get spread out in Philly last night. Per the LA Times: “Bryant stuck it to the fans in his hometown with 34 points, and the Lakers lived at the three-point line, making 14 of 34. The 10 they made in the first half tied a team record. Metta World Peace had 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and lobbied for more sharing of the ball in Coach Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo scheme. Bryant took only 21 shots Sunday (making 12) after averaging 27 the previous three games. ‘I’m happy that Coach went back to his offense,’ World Peace said. ‘He was hired for a reason. He was hired to bring an offense in. When he got here, he got a little complacent, a little bit confident, and went away from this offense and it turned into the Kobe show. When it turns into the Kobe show, it’s hard for everybody to put pressure on. When we put pressure on the other team, all five guys out there, they’ve got to use their legs. Anybody that uses a treadmill, they know you get tired after a while. After an hour, you want to get off that treadmill. Sometimes when we play, Kobe is the only man running on the treadmill and everybody else is relaxing. But [Sunday] Kobe led the way and made sure that his team was working, moving the ball, moving bodies and they all had to run the treadmill today.’ D’Antoni told players he wanted a return to team ball for the first 16 seconds of the shot clock, then let Bryant or Dwight Howard take control in the final eight seconds.”

  • In the last game the other players were hitting shots that’s why they were playing well. But when MWP, Meeks, Duhon, Jamison arent hitting their open shots when they play teamball then Kobe and Howard need to be a lot more dominant and take more shots. Simple as that. And MWP maybe you need to run on the treadmill a bit more because you are slow as hell on defense this season..

When Mike D’Antoni coached Phoenix, his strategy for beating the Lakers was to complement Raja Bell on his defense, try to goad Kobe into taking as many shots as possible, and turn the rest of the Lakers into spectators. It usually worked.

There’s no mystery why the Lakers have a lousy record when Kobe scores more than 30 points. If you watch D’Antoni grind his teeth on the bench when Kobe goes into ballhog mode, it’s pretty easy to figure out what he’s thinking. Nice to see Kobe starting to share the ball, I hope it contunues. The Lakers have no shot otherwise.

Kobe makes it “the Kobe Show” when the rest of the team is lobbing up unecessary 3 point bricks (MWP, looking at you). Yeah, spreading it around is great, but if guys are going 1/7, he has to take over.

MWP is obviously right to say the Lakers are a better team when they move the ball. How can anyone argue against that? So what if the other guys miss, they’re only going to get better by doing it, figuring out what works, what doesn’t, etc. We already know Kobe can’t do it on his own, that point is clear, so stop with the “Kobe has to takeover” garbage.

They’re only going to get better at making shots by missing more? Let me get this straight, so when Westbrook and Durant dominate the shots and the ball on a possession, they’re actually hurting their team? Man, they hurt their team a lot. Wonder why their teammates still hit their open shots when they do finally get the ball passed to them and Kobe’s teammates don’t. Ahhh, yes, because Kobe is just evil and is a ball hog like everyone else who takes 20 shots a game. Funny how when Kobe takes 21 shots and the team wins, he’s sharing the ball. When he takes 20 shots and they lose, he’s a ball hog. The logic is astounding.

  • Chris

Yeah, that worked well because Kobe’s teammates then, like now, couldn’t make their own shots and missed open shots when the opportunities were there. Good strategy. Funny, all the other games where Kobe’s taken 20+ shots per game and they lost, nobody ever referred to him as “sharing the ball”. But when they win, he’s sharing the ball… comedy.

uhm……every member of the Lakers playing 20 or more minutes….except Antawn Jamison, is shooting at or above their career high 3pt%
Everyone else (Kobe having the lowest 3pt % of everyone but Jamison at 38%) is a far above average 3pt shooter this season, compared to EVERYONE.

  • gogo

he should have said kobe is a ballhog

THERES A REASON HIS NAME IS METTA WORLD PEACE. Hes the 3rd voice to this team he won a championship with them so his presence will definitely be noticed. Queens Bridge Son

I have noticed something in message boards. When a team loses, we tend to say the cause is a failing of the best player of the team. Sometimes that might be true, but not all the time. Kobe is the best player on these Lakers, how are all the Lakers’ woes his fault?

MWP That makes a lot offense I mean sense. Being a Kobe lover I have to say you’re on ponit wth that comment. Good Analysis

It’s a chicken or egg thing though. if kobe is taking all those shots, then how do the other players get in rhythm? And if they are missing at the beginning does that mean they will keep missing later in the game? Kobe never believes that himself, which is why last year sometimes he would shoot like 4-27 (just making that up but I remember some real clunkers). You just have to stick to taking 5 shots a quarter for kobe and give the team a better chance of winning with engaged teammates for the full season. Ball Hogging is short sighted and selfish while sharing the ball will lead to more long term success and rings. But who am i to say. Kobe has 5 rings and is leading a team of all stars to a 12-14 record.

are metta in drugs? , kobe (aka, the “Kobe Show”), comes when the team
struggles at shooting. if kobe sees his team scoring he will pass or let them have the ball metta should know more than that and the idiots haters to smh

  • A.S

Kobe make a lot of points because yes he missing more a whole lot. As in scoring 37 points yes but on 14-29 or another game 34 pts shooting 16-41 So u should review ur argument. Compare the % between Kobe Westbrook and Durant and Kobe has the lowest and taking more shoots than the other. Westbrook most points comes in the paint. Durant is 3 time scorer of the lead with a team that went to the final last year. they have a team that they get involve on others aspects. some thunder do complain also abt not gettin the ball but at least they’re winning and they’re sharing the ball when it matter.

If it wasn’t for MWP in game 7, they wouldn’t have the 2010. Oh, and by the way, Pau Gasoft was the Finals MVP that year because the Black Hole was M.I.A.

  • Blazedyoo

Obviously it worked it got them to the playoffs this year on top of that no one said anything about the shot he kept shooting and missed miserably
