Pau Gasol Unhappy With Crunch Time Benching

Following an eight-game absence due to knee tendinitis in both joints, Pau Gasol returned to the Los Angeles Lakers’ lineup last night. He helped lead them to a close win over the visiting Charlotte Bobcats, but Gasol was less-than-pleased with head coach Mike D’Antoni’s decision to yank him late in the contest. Per the LA Daily News and OC Register: ““Hopefully it won’t happen too often,’ Gasol said. ‘When the game is on the line, I need to be on the court. That’s what I get paid to do.’ Gasol gets paid plenty. He’s earning $38.3 million for the next two seasons. Yet, the Lakers have reduced Gasol’s role to the equivalent of a role player. Lakers’ Coach Mike D’Antoni didn’t explain his benching that way. Instead, he explained it by questioning Gasol’s fatigue level. ‘I’m happy for Pau, it’s his first time back, the first five-eight minutes of each half he was really good, then he kind of went downhill when he got tired,’ D’Antoni said. Gasol’s 10 points on three of 10 shooting looks glamorous. His timing looked off. Gasol missed easy jumpers. Even though he spent a good portion playing at center without Dwight Howard in the lineup, Gasol struggled receiving easy looks. Yet, Gasol also posted nine, five assists and presented a whole bunch of sequences that epitomizes his versatility [...] The Lakers’ coach said after this game it should not happen too often. D’Antoni said it happened tonight ‘only because he’s coming back’ from knee tendinitis and seemed to get tired in both halves. D’Antoni obviously is comfortable playing one big and four shooters, with Gasol’s main post minutes coming when Dwight Howard is resting, but D’Antoni said tonight he ‘was happy for Pau’ to come back and have a good game.”

I love Pau but he has to stop whinging… if you have been out for weeks, if coach sees you are tired, you sit your arse on the bench..

  • roscoe

    does pau want out?

  • The Fury

You got two titles under your belt. It’s alright to ask for a trade now….

  • I like the way they are giving him more minutes at the 5 when Howard sits. But i would work out a way for the rotation that Howard sits a good portion of the 4th quarter (so that they cant hack a Dwight) and have Pau at the 5. And then in the final 4 minutes have both players on the court. The presence of Howard doesnt make Pau better but the presence and the passing ability of Pau makes Howard better..

Except that DAntoni did this even when Gasol was healthy. It doesn’t seem as if he is particularly fond of Pau.

The Gimp gets no respect. Whenever L.A. loses, they throw someone under the bus. It’s better to become a free agent and control your own destiny than to let L.A. control it for you. You’d have thought the Gimp would have learned by now.

    “The Gimp gets no respect….”
You just called someone a gimp and then b*tched about him not getting respect.
    My god your incredible.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange referred to him as such because (i) L.A. constantly throws him under the bus and (ii) beats on him, just like the Gimp.

  • LakeShow

Give an example of each please.

    Oh as always… you can’t…
Okay this get’s boring way to quick with you.
You can’t even put up a fight.

Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time, two skilled 7 footers at the same ____ time, in a league of 6’7″ centers at the same ____ time, have been the NBA’s best front court for the past few years, and led L.A. to two chips. Since, they’ve both been on the trade block – the ultimate sign of disrespect. If you want more evidence, check the Internet.

Name 5 prevalent centers under 6’7″… Oh you can’t? Gotcha..

    8 points 6 rebounds a game… Big Bynum’s Playoff averages their championship years….

LOL Your a hoot dood. A freaking hoot.

Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time, two skilled 7 footers at the same ____ time led the Lakers to those two chips. Bynum has since been traded for D12 who hasn’t even made a commitment to the Lakers, and the Gimp has been benched during crunch time and placed on the chop block. It’s darn near criminal how the league’s best frontcourt has been treated. The Lakers’ front office and fans don’t even have sense enough to be embarrassed.

The Shock Exchange has a saying for moments like these, “Imitation is a form of flattery.”

so you agree that is an imitation of what you sound like?
    .
    finally, we all agree!

    You beat me!!!!!
    Damn you!

  • shockexchange

And after another vicious attack against his person, the Shock Exchange stands corrected; Pau Gasol is not “the Gimp of L.A.” Thank you for clearing that up.
