Alvin Gentry Out as Phoenix Suns Head Coach

According to the Phoenix Suns, they have “mutually agreed” to part ways with head coach Alvin Gentry as the team struggles through a rebuilding year. The decision was made this morning, following a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last night. Per the AZ Republic: “The Suns have parted ways with coach Alvin Gentry after the team posted its worst record for the first half of a season in 25 years. An interim coach was not immediately known, although lead assistant coach Elston Turner would be the next in line and has been a finalist for other league head coaching jobs. The Suns lost at home Thursday night to Milwaukee for the first time in 26 years to fall to 13-28, the franchise’s worst midpoint record since the 1987-88 team went 13-28 coming out of the drug scandal. Gentry, Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver and President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby had a late-night meeting but Gentry was not let go at that time. A decision was made Friday morning. Sarver told USA Today on Dec. 11 that Gentry would be the Suns coach for the entire season.”

I like Gentry as a coach, but him getting fired does make sense. — he coaches the team like they have a chance at winning. he’s not good for developing player’s. given the Suns situation, keeping a coach who is starting PJ Tucker and benching high potential guys, doesn’t make that much sense on a team that can’t win anyway.

I would be totally against firing him if the team even had a chance at competing. But they don’t, in their last 7 games they’ve gone 1-6, while Gentry has been starting PJ Tucker and playing him 29 minutes a game, scoring 5 points and shooting 34% from the field because of his defense? really?

i think he did a good job with that team, he got a lot out of them, they were pretty depleted talent wise these last few years

  • roscoe

this team got on the crash and burn hwy when gortat started squirming for a trade.

gentry is just the beginning of the end for this team, roster, and front office…

changes will be coming and won’t stop.

I kind of disagree with you on the issue of player development. I feel this team could easily be an 8th seeded team. Gentry may not be the coach for this team but I wouldn’t say they need a coach that’s good for player development.

naw, this team is no playoff team. they have nobody to give the ball to at the end of games. their defensive players are useless offensively, and vice versa (except Gortat and Dudley).
    .
yet, Gentry insisted on playing the “defensive player’s” —- despite the teams defense being worse than it’s offense.

You don’t think this team can snag an 8th seed? I think they can. The Jazz didn’t have a real go to player last year and they were able to make it. Btw I only mentioned that because you said Phoenix didn’t have a go to guy. I think a line up of Dragic, Brown, Dudley, Scola, and Gortat is a good enough starting 5 to grab a playoff spot.

Gentry is an assistant NBA coach, by nature. In my opinion.
Young players MIGHT listen to him.
Older players regularly tune him out. Throughout his career.
But I think that, he would be a very good head coach in the NCAA. Or, even the D – League.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    hell no they can’t.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

So do you think they can’t soley because of Gentry or is it just the roster as a whole?

  • Ben

Makes me wonder what Sarver was expecting from a team full of low level role players?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    the roster as a whole

Gentry did a fine job as head coach but that old saying remains True, its easier too fire a coach then to ”fire” players

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Gotcha. Fair enough I’m sure you see more of them than I do. I get such a small sample so it’s probably irrational for me to think they would.

  • Redd

I don’t think Nuggets have that either but I agree, the closest thing they have is Scola.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i watch just about every suns game lol
    .
*now that i don’t have league pass*

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The Nuggets also don’t try and be a slow paced defensive team when their strengths are the opposite. — that and, top to bottom, Denver is outrageously more talented then Phoenix.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Yea so I’m sure you get a nice spoon full lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, i’d like a chop stick full tho

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Agreed hence why I was about to use them as an example over the Jazz but I didn’t lol

  • Redd

I agree, but Suns have potential to be a notch under the Nuggets as far as talent

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

man, the 4th best player on the Nuggets (Kenneth Faried) would be the best player on the Suns.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    agreed.
    .
i do think he can be a very good NBA coach on a team with a lead player who leads the actual team. — like say with, Nash/LeBron/Paul/Durant — one of those guys coaches never get the chance to coach.

  • Redd

Over Luis Scola? Eh, Faried’s rebounding definitely is nicer.

Quite frankly I didn’t even know who was the stats leader, apparently it’s Dragic.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes, Luis Scola is useless defensively, and David West on the boards. Faried is better.

  • nhn

    sarver: I lied.

  • The Philosopher

Maybe. He’s never really had a team.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well he did take that 2010 suns team to the WCF

  • dannyb

B-Easy as player-coach. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

  • theDankerNuggets

    brilliant idea

  • The Philosopher

    I hear you.
I do not want to appear as if I am making attempts at discrediting Gentry’s capabilities as a professional. (not saying that that has been implied) For every NBA coach is indeed, qualified for the job, in my opinion. They have payed their dues. And for a fleeting moment, some experience some success. And the great ones are the great ones.
But in reference to the team that Alvin Gentry guided to the Western Finals that year, we must consider, Gentry was flanked with a sure – fire Hall of Fame point guard. Amar’e was slowing down, but Gentry inherited the core. They were still viable…
In my opinion, Gentry is a guy who is like, a “good company guy”, who will roll with the punches. Will keep it moving in without making any waves. Not the greatest coach, but is good enough to keep around, just in case a team does not want to pay a higher price. He has worked for men who allegedly, are cheap. (Sterling, Sarver)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh that is my fault, I was just saying, well Gentry did have that CHANCE, not that he capitalized on it. I feel the same way about Paul Silas as a coach as you are describing your feelings towards Gentry

  • The Philosopher

Nah, not your fault. I get caught up. You know…
And Paul Silas is another coach.
He, I think, went “against the grain”, at the end. He ended up with some television appearances, but he, to me, seemed a little hurt at the end of his run.
Then he got sick. And we know that, that is never good.

  • Dacre

??? Because he never got the chance to coach nash …

  • Dacre

Considering where the “best” teams are in the west currently we could be watching an NBA league where neither the suns or lakers are doing much… this is not a fun time to be a suns or nash fan for that matter….

  • Dacre

Maybe if the suns got an allstar calibre pf and played kendall Marshall I would be happier.

  • Dacre

I’m under no illusions… the suns should probably have an even worse record.
