Amar’e Stoudemire Says He is Learning Defense for the First Time

Perhaps unintentionally, Amar’e Stoudemire took a shot at his former head coach Mike D’Antoni, while praising his current one Mike Woodson. When it comes to defense, Stoudemire says it’s the first time it has become a point of emphasis (which is a comment he has made in the past.) Per Newsday: “Just having a defensive coach for the first time in my career is going to help,’ Stoudemire said. ‘I’ve never been taught defense in my whole career. To now have a coach that actually teaches defense and teaches strategies and knows positioning and posture and how to guard different plays is going to be helpful. I’m going to take it as a challenge, accept the challenge and try to improve as a player.’ Stoudemire, a high school-to-NBA player, was selected in the first round in 2002 by Phoenix and had eight seasons with the Suns and D’Antoni as his head coach before coming to the Knicks. Woodson, who was the Knicks’ defensive assistant under D’Antoni last season before becoming head coach, has changed the way they guard the pick-and-roll this year. Stoudemire is a little behind in where he needs to be defensively and in the terminology, and was out of position several times Tuesday against the Trail Blazers. He was not the only Knick. Woodson harped on defense throughout Wednesday’s practice because the Knicks have had major slippage on that end of the court. They have allowed at least 100 points in eight of their last 12 games. They yielded 100 five times in the first 19. Woodson hinted at switching up the starting lineup Thursday night against San Antonio since the Knicks have opened games flat lately. But Stoudemire won’t be the new addition. Woodson isn’t divulging Stoudemire’s long-term role. For now, at least, Woodson says Stoudemire will come off the bench and play limited minutes. To his credit, Stoudemire continues to say this works for him, especially if the Knicks are winning. ‘Depending on how we’re playing, if we’re playing well, I have no problem coming off the bench,’ Stoudemire said.”

By my count, this is the third time he’s said some variation of this.

    Shout out to Mike Antoni

  • bringbackthesonics

you’d think that he would’ve learned something about defense when training with hakeem

  • shockexchange

But when the Shock Exchange says skipping college hurt kids’ skill set / basketball IQ, everybody wants to pile on. Amar’e skipped college but can’t play defense … now go run tell that.

  • Fat Lever

Sorry, but for a supposed star to be saying something like this is utterly ridiculous to me. He’s a grown man, a pro, and he’s essentially saying he’s been waiting for someone to teach him defense?

Maybe Amar’e should take it upon himself to learn that side of his game. How do you not learn defense as a NBA player?

That’s like a barista saying they know how to make the latte, but they haven’t learned how to pour it.

Just another athlete passing the buck and not owning up to their professional responsibilities.

He said this a few years ago too…

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

    LOL, yes. exactly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    Jesus Christ D’Antoni

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

please don’t be gullible enough to believe this.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Amar’e also skipped most of high school.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Amar’e also said, “Defense is the key to win championships, that’s something I’m dedicated on also, to become a much, much better defensive player,” Stoudemire said. “It’s going to happen. It’s a matter of preparation and practice and getting that chemistry down on that end of the court.”
Stoudemire trained with Hakeem Olajuwon for two weeks in Houston.

“There’s so many moves that I picked up from Hakeem,” he said. “Just developing my post [game] has been phenomenal for me. When I came out of high school, I was thrown the ball and [told] do what you do best. I never got a chance to develop my game as far as [in the] post. Working with Hakeem is gonna be a great advantage for me.”
    .
Which was this summer. Yet, he is just now learning defense for the first time.
    .
    .
He’s a liar. He’s making excuses. The same thing YOU bash Kobe Bryant for.

  • Barbosa’s love child

I see what you did there, and I love it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

You are right. he is just running his mouth. Whether it be because he wants to secretly bash D’Antoni, or give Mike Woodson some credit, or maybe he just wants people not to focus on the fact that he looked awful in his first game..I don’t know. I just think it’s hilarious that D’Antoni coached him for like 6 years and apparently doesn’t know a thing about defense

  • j

amare is not the calibre that everyone thinks he is or should be. totally over rated, only thrived because nash made him look good.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you don’t get it. Amar’e has worked on defense before. He’s done it under D’Antoni – especially in New York. Where Mike Woodson was the assistant before he took over.
    .
Either way, in Phoenix, when Terry Porter took over, the team didn’t touch a basketball for their first 2 weeks of training camp. ALL they worked on was defense.
    .
Amar’e is making excuses, this shouldn’t reflect poorly on ANYONE but Amar’e himself.

  • ctk

The same pride u have n droppin 30 on a player ..have that same PRIDE n somebody tryin to drop 30 on u …THAT GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH COACHING …its all about givin a F*UCK….period

  • The Philosopher

Well, at least it seems that he still loves to hear himself speak.

  • shockexchange

Picking your own facts again nbk? “Horry Jr is the biggest winner of his era.” The Shock Exchange is on record saying that.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    are you?

    .

    you’ve said this,

    - “Shock Exchange • 6 months ago−

Lakers – the most underachieving team in the L – don’t need a homerun deal. With Odom, MWP, Gasol, Bynum and Horry, Jr they had superior talent to win the ‘chip each of the past two years. What they need is to make Horry, Jr pound the ball inside in lieu of his 35 shots/game at a 33% clip. Expecting another Shaq or Gasol to fall into their laps has bred laziness and a sense of entitlement.”

    and this,

    - “I could have called him “Flavor Flav, JR” – the hype man for Shaq, Bynum/Gasol … But that really would have gotten your dander up, huh?”

    .
whatever, let’s pretend you respect Kobe, and you think the only issue with Amar’e is that he didn’t go to college (AS IF HE COULD HAVE EVEN GOT IN), and that you actually believe the bullsh*t you post on this website.

  • shockexchange

That’s it! You’ve gotten my dander up! The Shock Exchange totally respects Horry Jr son. You know how hard it is to align yourself with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the L” so you can win a chip? That takes talent.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that’s not respect.

  • shockexchange

Speaking with “forked tongue” again nbk? When the Shock Exchange pointed out Horry Jr’s true skill set – aligning himself with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the L” – you tried to catch fade. Months later, you got your dander up when SLAM put Horry Jr in its top 5 – you called the guy overrated, yet you never cited the source of your information. When you call him overrated it’s the gospel?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

show me where i didn’t show supporting evidence of my opinion? when do i ever do that? —- and you are not pointing out any “true skill set” by calling him Horry Jr and saying he’s only had success because he was fortunate enough to play for the Lakers. If you don’t respect the guy, that’s fine. Nobody cares. Acting like you saying these things is a sign of respect is an utter joke.
    .
you know what? actually, keep calling that respect. I’m going to refer to you as “daddy’s girl” from now on. Out of respect for you taking credit for the things your father does….k? it’s respect. don’t get all mad.

  • The Philosopher

I’m beginning to wonder if he’s “what’s his name”. (you know who I’m talking about)
    No disrespect meant, shock.

  • shockexchange

And after the all the back and forth, the Shock Exchange stands corrected. If Amar’e had played for Bobby Knight and refused to follow his defensive principles, he wouldn’t have been pullin’ splinters a mile long out of his rear end. Thanks for clearing that up guy. And when you repeat anything else the Shock Exchange says, remember to cite the source.

  • shockexchange

None taken. The Shock Exchange has been called far worse than “what’s his name.” But if you look at the past threads on here, you will see who’s really trollin’ whom.

  • The Philosopher

You have to understand that, nbk is a smart, intelligent individual. You have to come with some good stuff with him.
If you don’t, well, you know…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

naw, this isn’t him. we know exactly who this is. He’s a 19 year old kid, whose dad wrote a book, according to the website he pointed us too numerous times, he’s also looking for a college basketball team to play for. or maybe he found one? idk, i only looked at the site once.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

tsk tsk tsk, “The Shock Exchange has a saying for an occasions like these: “He who has a thousand friends has not a friend to spare, And he who has one enemy will meet him everywhere.”"

  • The Philosopher

    Ohhhhh…

  • shockexchange
  • The Philosopher

And, my memory must be leaving me. I remember the post, now that I’ve looked at it, again.

  • The Philosopher

    I remember the post, now.
    Pretty good.
    Again, my apologies.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he is trying to say i trolled him on that post……when all i did was address Allen bringing me up, and then Shock Exchange lying to Allen about what he said. Other then that, all of my posts are responses.

  • shockexchange

No problem my man. “Real” recognize “real.”

  • Seth

He might be a tad overrated, but he had one of his best seasons the first year in New York.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i honestly would not have anything to say to dude if he said things that followed some path of reason. then on that post, when he started taking credit for some of the most famous quotes in human history, i got (admittedly) pissed off. There is not many things in this world i have more distaste for then taking credit for other people’s work.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    ^ this

  • The Philosopher

I read that exchange, just now. When I first ran into the thread, I did not read the comments.
    I should have, though.
That was a good exchange between you all. lol

  • crooklyn

dude is a straight up jackass, so much more off the court junk and noise. Proof that some dudes just care about the money and not the game. Cash checks but can’t study defense…what a clown, show some accountability. I guess the next thing is the fire extinguisher actually attacked him in the hallway

  • The Philosopher

    We must educate our brethren.
We must make the attempt(s) to educate, and teach each other the ways of the world.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

but how do you educate a person who has no desire to improve themselves? i am accountable for the way i treat him. i don’t hold anything back, and i am completely honest with how i feel. if i am wrong about something, i will readily admit it. all i ask for is reason. if someone purposefully ignores it, or makes no attempt to understand it, what choice is there? i should just ignore him. ok. answered my own question.

  • Mackenzie Kerridge

I like how you refer to yourself in the third person… You must be big where you’re from

  • ChosenOne

I have yet to see Caboose and Shock go at each other yet… haha, that would be fun..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    this is a GREAT comment.

  • The Philosopher

I believe that everyone has the desire to improve themselves. I could be wrong.
The desire has to be tapped. Discovered. By the educator.
It’s just that, sometimes, some people already feel themselves as adequate. As is such, they may feel as if there is no room for improvement. Consciously, anyway.
But if tapped properly, learning and education can occur.
Reverse psychology is useful in many cases. Have the subject in the right position to learn and improve themselves. Whether they want to acknowledge, or not. They may not even openly acknowledge. But anyone who possesses general self knowledge will internally acknowledge when learning and improvement takes place.
    In many cases, anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I think Caboose gets frustrated enough just reading Shock’s comments.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

but look at the saying’s part of that conversation. i mean, if he won’t even acknowledge stuff their, how is the educator supposed to trick him into improving? — i feel like this is an attempt at teaching a Puppy how to not only sit, but to also stand on 2 legs.

  • AQWORD

what kinda weak a$$ , anorexic B.S. is that Amare.
