Derrick Rose Now Taking Full Contact During Practice

According to Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau, superstar point guard Derrick Rose has progressed to the next crucial step in his long rehab from left ACL surgery. Rose is now taking full contact in team practices, and it’s only a matter of time until he returns to game action (likely next month.) Per ESPN: “Rose’s rehab from his April 28 injury and May 12 surgery has steadily progressed to the point that there are no longer any physical limitations. ‘He’s full-contact, yeah,’ Thibodeau said. The likely date of Rose’s return is after the Feb. 17 All-Star Game. ‘He can do all the cutting, he can do shooting, he can go off the dribble,’ Thibodeau said. ‘So it’s just a matter of him getting acclimated to playing in a game situation. You have to understand that in practice you’re striving to get as close to a game-like intensity as you can, but you also have to understand that you’re not going to be able to get there, so that will be a whole different level. And we have to make sure that he’s ready to handle that intensity.’ Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and executive vice president John Paxson said recently they’re going to be cautious with the 2010-11 MVP. [...] Reinsdorf consistently has maintained Rose won’t play in a game until doctors assure him he’s ready. ‘There’s no date,’ Reinsdorf said during an interview with WGN-TV on Monday. ‘The doctors say that he’s doing everything that he’s supposed to be doing and there’s no specific date. He’s not going to come back until the doctors say unequivocally that he has no greater chance of getting hurt than any other player. If there’s any risk, he’s not coming back.’”

Great news for Rose/Bulls fans. The season hasn’t been the same without Rose.

im hoping he finishes the season strong

this is great, great, great news

  • K-Dub

D Rose will win another MVP next season and bulls will be in title contention next year! Rose will be even better than he was before.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

His legs look pretty powerful. I think he’s going to be fine when he returns. Not 100% yet. But good enough to get the Bulls to the Conference Finals. Especially if Thibs continues to give Jimmy Butler minutes.

im sure theyre gonna start him by giving him limited minutes.. id say 20 for first 10 or so games

  • i_ball

    Great news for everybody.
I hope he can wotk his way in to full speed for the playoffs.

  • danpowers

sure, but bulls fans have many reasons to be proud of their team.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Absolutely. One of the reasons Bulls fans should be excited is because Rose will be returning to a team that’s playing with a lot of confidence. Especially Jimmy Butler. Dangerous team come playoff time.

  • Kes

Not with Durant still healthy in this league. Sorry, but he is the heir to the “Best Player” throne. Not Rose.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

And regardless of how well they’ve played, nothing compares to Rose stepping out on that floor in the United Center for them.

  • danpowers

yup. the road to the nba finals will be a rocky one for the heat this year. boston wasnt that easy neither last year, but bulls, knicks and brooklyn have the potential to really challenge them in the playoffs this season.

  • shutup

Easy killa, let’s see how well he bounces back before we anoint him MVP of next season. I just want to see if he still has the explosiveness that sets him apart from every other pg not named Westbrook.

  • Redd

Hoping they start him on 5-10 minutes for the first 2 weeks.

  • Redd

    Did I hear Jimmy Butler?

    I see we’ve got a fan :)

  • Redd

Basically the guy is back, hope things turn out well. To have him injured again will be the greatest shock & sadness to hit Chicago’s sports world.

Not that this city isn’t already riddled with pain from gang violence & innocent children being hurt.

DRose is my favorite player. Want the Bulls to do well. I’ve kept up with Jimmy. Deng doesn’t have to play 40 minutes a night anymore.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Probably 10-15. Depends on how his body responds. Plus he has to get himself into game shape.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I’d go with 15 for the first 10 games. Then push it to 20. He should be playing around 25 minutes before the playoffs.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    True.

  • Redd

Jimmy is better than Rose :|

Lol, jk, is it the Malcolm X tattoo Rose has? Bet.

  • Redd

I think he’s already in game shape.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I doubt it. Can’t get into game shape by just practicing. He’s going to need to play some games.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Been a fan since I saw highlights a few days after his high school game that ESPN aired. Love his style of play and his selflessness.

  • Redd

I thought you meant him being in shape to play sorry, yeah he won’t be in ‘game shape’ until next year completely. I think by playoff he can be a help.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Oh I think he’ll be more than just help by playoff time. The question is will the team continue to be aggressive and not just depend on him just because he’s back out there. Depending on who they get in the 1st round, he’ll probably still be on a minutes limit. But I see him being able to have a major impact on games before the playoffs get here. You can’t go by looks only, but he looks explosive and powerful to me. Young guy. The best doctors money can buy. He may not be the NBA’s version of Adrian Peterson, but I think he’ll be pretty close.

  • ThaWindy

Great news.. But I knew he was already taking full contact. Call it intuition..I know he could come back today but they really are being cautions and waiting. Having those practices under his belt is gonna make it seem like he hasnt missed a beat. I believe shumpert should have also waited another 4 weeks coming back around now but..Go Bulls Mitch!

in a way it has….theyve been winning with rebounding and defense

  • yayo

Nawwww. We wouldn’t have guessed with all the Rose jocking you do on all Bulls related discussions.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Foolish comment.

  • Slick Ric

Bulls players used to say Thibs practices were harder than the actual games, so It might get him ready for the real games.

  • Redd

Honestly, as a big Bulls fan I didn’t even know he was a fan til’ now, he doesn’t wear it like I do so you look dumb.

  • Redd

You seen him dunking & whatnot?

  • yayo

Who asked you? Nobody was talking to you, Blonde. Speak when spoken to. Your name isn’t Redd anymore. It’s Blonde, as in Dumb Blonde. He can answer for himself, stop d!ckriding as usual. You are his and Caboose’s groupie.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one has besides the team. His teammates say he’s been dunking for a while. All anyone else has seen is him shooting before games for the past month or so.

  • danpowers

true. i mean thats what any go to guy should mean for his team. i just dont want to hear all those complaints by bulls fans about how little help rose has. even without him and even by losing key roleplayers with little compensation this group is a top playoff team in the higher ranks of the conference

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Depends on how guys play. If Boozer and Deng would have stepped up against the Heat in the Conference Finals two seasons ago and helped with the scoring, no one would have said Rose doesn’t have help. They have to produce. We saw it with LeBron’s Cavs. Guys played very well in the regular season but they choked when he needed them in the playoffs multiple times.

  • danpowers

isnt that the case year in year out for any team that doesnt come up with the chip in the end?

  • Redd

LOLLLL it’s like I’m in high school.

Bunch of lame white kids with lame white people jokes. Morons galore.
