George Karl Considers Andre Miller One of the Greatest Point Guards Ever

Andre Miller reached the 15,000 point mark last night, and the veteran point guard joined an exclusive club. This prompted Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl to place Miller among the best of all time at his position. Per the Denver Post: “Where does Andre Miller rank among NBA point guards all time? Well, his coach says maybe top five. For real. (As one fan, @Alf954, tweeted when told of the proclamation: ‘Alphabetically by first name?’) ‘I’m taking about a true point guard,’ Nuggets coach George Karl said, ‘who plays the game the way a point guard should play, not (necessarily) with the 3-ball and the scoring point guards. But the ‘trueness’ of the position, I think he’s one of the best.’ The debate occurred Thursday because the 36-year-old Miller surpassed 15,000 career points during the Nuggets’ game against the Timberwolves, making him only the eighth player ever to have 15,000 points and at least 7,500 assists. ‘I just think the essential personality of a point guard, he has almost everything except making the 3-ball,’ Karl said of the Denver guard known for his crisp, accurate assists. [...] For Miller’s career, which began in 1999 with Cleveland, the former Utah Utes star has averaged 13.9 points, 7.1 assists and 4.0 rebounds. ‘I think Andre could have been a better scorer than he’s turned out to be, but I think his desire has always been to be the quarterback,’ Karl said. ‘He does amazing things out there with a nature that helps everybody — helps the team, the coach, helps winning, and he does it with a humble mentality. He’s a quiet guy and any type of attention he gets, he deserves it.’”

Remember that one night he dropped 52 on Dallas, good times…..miller didn’t put up
HOF numbers but he’ll be forever be known as one of those guys hoop heads appreciate.

  • K_HOLIDAY

Yea, that doesnt even look close to being right! George Karl is out of his damn mind!

  • Max

    LOL

  • Max

    No George, just no.
He is definitely one of the best if not the best alley oop passers ever.

  • Zabbah

Big O wasn’t a true point guard. His teammates disliked his selfishness and attention to stats. He’s one of the greatest guards, but not a true point guard.

  • Omar

    Well George,
He was one of the more underrated but you made this asinine comment.

  • robb

    bad joke coach

  • VanCityBBall

i love this guys game so much and i think it always goes underappreciated. you dont see many point gaurds post up when they get the chance but he makes it happen… with that being said top 5 is still a stretch

  • spit hot fiyah

that was sick, remember the fastbreak dunk he had on the nuggets that same season? element of surprise for real

It all depends on one’s definition of “greatest”. Miller will never be in the Top 10 but one could make a case for him in the lower 20s.

Did you not watch the Nash-Marion days in PHX? Pin point Lobs from half court.

  • LakeShow

    In certain aspects, yes.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

“… at calling fake timeouts” he later reiterated.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Agreed.

    that was crazy lol

  • Hugo Silva

Well havent you seen Andre Miller with Kenneth Faried and JaVale Mcgee these days??? Andre miller has thrown all kinds of half court opp too! I think Miller is the better lob passer. Nash is great but isnt as good at throwing oops like Miller.

  • Slick Ric

    Damn sure surprised me.

  • Comment_System

He’s one of the most craftiest with a high bball IQ, that’s for sure.

Coach Karl was being nice; but ‘Dre Miller is one of the most smartest PG’s to play in the L. He makes you play at his pace. Never seems out of control or fustrated. Him & Mark Jackson have done so much w/ “so little” (athleticism & quickness). Like someone mentioned above, his element of surprise is amazing.

  • MikeC.

    Most smartest…

Just another enigma to the the forever changing greatest point-guard debate. Andre Miller is who you would call “Mr. Consistent” or “Mr. Efficient” and he probably could have saved a lot of franchises but he’s not the alpha mentality. Lakers, Knicks, Miami, Dallas, Boston, they could all use Andre Miller. Dude has hardly been an injury liability unlike all the teams mentioned point guards. I would even go as far as to say he could help those teams win a championship. He does not have a three point game, but he can shoot it.

WORD, That dunk gave me hope….if Andre Miller can catch a Banger then so can i Damit.

  • Ugh

Until Andre leaves the team, unsatisifed with his coach’s ability to make crunch time substitutions, in-game adjustments or some up with creative plays that get his team to overachieve in the post-season as well as the regular season. When he leaves, Karl will slag him off in the press like he did Kemp, Payton, Iverson, Anthony, etc. etc. etc.
