Rudy Gay Traded to the Toronto Raptors (UPDATE)

According to ESPN.com, the Grizzlies and Raptors have agreed to a trade that sends Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto in exchange for Ed Davis and Jose Calderon. The deal is still in its early stages—the Grizzlies and Raptors have only agreed “in principle”, according to ESPN, and Memphis is reportedly looking to flip Calderon to a third team, possibly Detroit (for Tayshaun Prince or Corey Maggette) or Dallas (for Vince Carter). But what we do know is that it appears Gay is (almost) certainly headed north. Some details: “The Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle on a trade that will send leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Raptors, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. Sources told ESPN.com that the Grizzlies will acquire forward Ed Davis and veteran guard Jose Calderon from the Raptors and then move Calderon on to a third team to ultimately make this a three-team deal. The Detroit Pistons, sources said, are one of the prime options to take on Calderon, having pursued the Spanish floor leader all season. The Grizzlies want a small forward out of the trade and Detroit has two on its roster in the final year of their contract: Tayshaun Prince and Corey Maggette. But Memphis, sources said, is talking to at least one other team about taking on Calderon and is expected to receive a second-round pick from Toronto as part of the deal. The Raptors, sources said, are expected to take on Grizzlies reserve center Hamed Haddadi in addition to Gay.”

UPDATE: Deal is done. Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto; Jose Calderon to Detroit; Austin Daye, Tayshaun Prince and Ed Davis to Memphis. Details via Yahoo! Sports: “The Memphis Grizzlies have reached an agreement in principle to trade forward  Rudy Gay to theToronto Raptors, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Grizzlies receive point guard Jose Calderon as part of the deal, and will route Calderon’s $10.5 million expiring contract to the Detroit Pistons for a package that includes forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye, league sources told Y! Sports. The Raptors also sent forward Ed Davis and a second-round pick to the Grizzlies. Memphis sent center Hamed Haddadi to the Raptors. Gay, 26, is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds. Under new owner Robert Para, Memphis has been desperate to unload contracts for the short- and long-term. In Prince, the Grizzlies get a respected, if not aging, small forward who’ll give them considerable savings over the $37 million owed Gay the next two seasons.”

I’ll hold out on saying that OKC is better without Harden until I see what they look like. They were going to blow through the regular season anyway. We’ll see what happens when the playoffs get here. My biggest thing again is who’s going to be able to get a shot off when the Grizzlies need one? I don’t trust Conley. OJ Mayo is in Dallas. They better hope they don’t ever need a game-winning shot.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Regular season. Durant and Westbrook have become better playmakers, but the playoffs will be the time when we can make judgments about whether the team is better or not.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Been doing it for years. A bunch of guards. I don’t understand it.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Knight has been playing 32 minutes a game this season. Is Calderon going to take minutes away from a developing PG? Not a good idea.

  • Mars

No. Lottery pick protected from when they to Lowry.

  • Mars

Theyre building assets to acquire a franchise player. All the aforementioned players are bait. Now they can get whoever they want in the this weak draft. Or next years. But they have a nice roster.1

If he can somehow unload Bargs, then I’m a happy camper.

If you want to make a playoff push it might be a good idea to have a seasoned vet and FIBA world champion play more minutes than a second year unproven player in development. But that might just be me. On the other hand, if the plan is tanking and letting Knight develop, Calderón will be riding the pine all his time in Detroit.

So it really was a Hollinger move….

“Levien is making these deals based largely on the recommendations of John Hollinger, a statistician who worked for a cable sports company. The San Antonio Spurs once used him as a consultant and regretfully took his advice to sign a free agent named Jackie Butler. It was such a disaster, the Spurs had to attach Luis Scola to a trade to get Butler out of town.”

you can spread talent around the league as you wish. the big markets will always have the money to go over the cap and put together big names while small markets have a more difficult time now to do so. wait for one or two strong seasons in houston and tel players demand bigger contracts and see where these guys end up then

Don’t get me started on the dynamics of capitalism and its effects on the dispossessed, brother. I’m not saying communism is the solution but there’s SURELY a compromise between the two systems that would be better than where we are headed currently which is fascism

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Wow. We’ll see how this works out but I don’t see it going too well.

  • z

Congrats my dude. You and i hav agreed on alot of issues (mostly social), glad you got a decent team now. Hopefully the refs don’t bone y’all outta too many more W’s with bad calls in the clutch. Peace

  • Mike From Spain

By advance statistics Rudy Gay was the third best player in the trade… go figure

  • danpowers

well, capitalism as an extreme has fascist characteristics, same as communism (in practical use). but just true, that a mix of both would be the reasonable sollution as an (almost) perfect system. whatever, this truly aint the place to discuss about that

  • patrick

My other comment is,,,why did Memphis want Ed Davis? They already have Darrell Arthur who is about the same height, weight, and age. I don’t think Ed Davis is much better? And Maybe Darrell Arthur is a little better? I dunno. This aspect of the trade is not making much sense to me at all. Then they almost got Jon Leuer from the cavs last week..and he as well is the about the same height, age, weight as Davis and Arthur!

  • GBtha G

What a silly trade by the grizzlies lettin they best player go just 4 the money!!!!!!!! I guess its goin to hurt everybody in Memphis who will have to tighten they wallets. And why cant the raptors relocate Stateside????????playin in toronto dont make sense really.

Rudy Gay is a star. Toronto should be very happy to have him. Maybe Bargs can go for some strong inside scorer and rebounder. The Grizz went to cutting payroll and blew up their team, sad for the fans. What Memphis is doing is beyond logic. Is Tayshaun going to be the perimeter scorer? Is Z Bo going somewhere else to give Ed Davis and Austin Daye time? Then, Detroit has 3 PG’s. There has to be move moves coming.

  • clos1881

The raptors the most exciting set of wing players with derozan gay Ross I will actually watch them now the grizz have regressed 2nd round at best

  • RyanBritishSteelWhitelaw

First and foremost, Bargnani was injured at the time, we weren’t going to be able to trade a injured player. Secondly, Davis was never going to play any better than he was, and Jonas Valanciunas is our big man with potential. The guy is great defensively and we don’t need a big that can score when we have Lowry, Gay, DeRozan and Ross. Thirdly, Gay, Fields and Kleiza are our Small Forwards. Ross, DeRozan and Anderson are our SG’s. We have proper depth at the 3 position now. Fourthly, we only took Haddadi to even out the trade salary-wise. He’ll be future endeavored in the off-season or just sent to the D-League.

This was a perfect trade for Toronto, you’re just too ignorant to see it that way because Bargnani wasn’t involved. Bargs wasn’t our biggest problem, depth at the 3 was.

  • RyanBritishSteelWhitelaw

He’s not going to refuse. Kyle Lowry is his best friend off the court, and he’s also really good friends with DeRozan. He’s happier in Toronto than Memphis, you can see that because his game is filled with a new energy. Also, his stats have escalated since he’s been playing for us.
