Rudy Gay Traded to the Toronto Raptors (UPDATE)

According to ESPN.com, the Grizzlies and Raptors have agreed to a trade that sends Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto in exchange for Ed Davis and Jose Calderon. The deal is still in its early stages—the Grizzlies and Raptors have only agreed “in principle”, according to ESPN, and Memphis is reportedly looking to flip Calderon to a third team, possibly Detroit (for Tayshaun Prince or Corey Maggette) or Dallas (for Vince Carter). But what we do know is that it appears Gay is (almost) certainly headed north. Some details: “The Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle on a trade that will send leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Raptors, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. Sources told ESPN.com that the Grizzlies will acquire forward Ed Davis and veteran guard Jose Calderon from the Raptors and then move Calderon on to a third team to ultimately make this a three-team deal. The Detroit Pistons, sources said, are one of the prime options to take on Calderon, having pursued the Spanish floor leader all season. The Grizzlies want a small forward out of the trade and Detroit has two on its roster in the final year of their contract: Tayshaun Prince and Corey Maggette. But Memphis, sources said, is talking to at least one other team about taking on Calderon and is expected to receive a second-round pick from Toronto as part of the deal. The Raptors, sources said, are expected to take on Grizzlies reserve center Hamed Haddadi in addition to Gay.”

UPDATE: Deal is done. Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toronto; Jose Calderon to Detroit; Austin Daye, Tayshaun Prince and Ed Davis to Memphis. Details via Yahoo! Sports: “The Memphis Grizzlies have reached an agreement in principle to trade forward  Rudy Gay to theToronto Raptors, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Grizzlies receive point guard Jose Calderon as part of the deal, and will route Calderon’s $10.5 million expiring contract to the Detroit Pistons for a package that includes forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye, league sources told Y! Sports. The Raptors also sent forward Ed Davis and a second-round pick to the Grizzlies. Memphis sent center Hamed Haddadi to the Raptors. Gay, 26, is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds. Under new owner Robert Para, Memphis has been desperate to unload contracts for the short- and long-term. In Prince, the Grizzlies get a respected, if not aging, small forward who’ll give them considerable savings over the $37 million owed Gay the next two seasons.”

why do i feel this is gonna dent team chemistry?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Memphis may regret this. Neither Maggette, Tayshaun Prince or any other SF they may receive will fill that gap. Two older SFs in place of a young star?

Wow. Looks like Haddadi will take us to the pomised land.

  • Andy

    Boo

  • Stephen A. Smith

Just a dumb trade for the Grizzlies they practically get nothing back, Ed Davis is going to ride the bench, it would have made more sense for the grizzlies to trade Gay to the Suns for Jared Dudley and Michael Beasley, since they want a SF in return.

  • Madubbs

    Colangelo We Forgive You

  • DaRaptor

But what happens after the Raptors get the first overall pick next year and draft Andrew Wiggins?

  • Madubbs

So do we throw out the last issue?

  • Mr.Wang
  • Redd

That’s what I assumed would happen but now they certainly won’t be getting him.

  • zogs19994

    1) WE STILL HAVE BARGS
    2) RAPS TRADED THEIR ONLY BIG MAN WITH “REAL” POTENTIAL
    3) NOW WE HAVE ROSS,FIELDS,DEROZAN,GAY,ANDERSON, KLEIZA…..ALL WINGS
    4) HAMED HADDADI…..LOL

  • joshua

wow. raptors are gonna suck more now… DAVIS WAS THE BEST.

  • RedDragon10

Memphis isn’t exactly the class a team for making trades

  • http://twitter.com/DPisWill DePaul Williams

lmao I was thinking the same thing

Calderon is extremely, extremely underrated. |Sad that he has to whither away in Detriot.

  • Vince

Just in, Detroit will send Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye along with Toronto’s Ed Davis to the Grizzlies. Toronto receives Rudy Gay and Detroit gets Jose Calderon.

Not gonna lie, I think the Pistons got the better end of that trade.

  • LakeShow

Why did the trade Speights and Ellington?…

  • Vince

    Shits and giggles

  • shawnkemp4prez

It is soooo hard being a Grizzlies fan, you guys. It really, really is. Now our bench is gone, Rudy is gone, and our cheap-ass owners have destroyed our best season in franchise history. Man….

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Who predicted that Tayshaun would finally leave Detroit this way? And so many years after the rest of that championship core left. This takes Memphis out of the Conference Finals discussion.

  • J05h88

not crazy about Derozan and Rudy gay playing together. we’ll see though. and where does the scoring come from in memphis now? Randolphs a beast but not getting any younger.

  • VanCityBBall

So they trade a big that had solid potential and had good chemistry with AJohnson, and the second best PG in the L as far as TO ratio for just RGay? i love Rudy but i really liked how Davis was growing… the only thing that i see TDot got here is a guy that can actually close out the 4th and a guy that has known to be a “Raptor Killer” in the past- which actually isnt that bad… but the most unfortunate thing of all is that Barg’s is still gonna be in a Rap’s uniform… for now

  • LakeShow

See, I understand the giggles, but not the shits…

  • Bravo

Good bye Jose and Ed you served the raptors well. I will still cheer for you!

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

seems like they executed their backup plan to shave cap, before they executed their first plan.

  • LeroyShonuff

Espn is reporting that Tyshaun and Daye is headed to Memphis which should work out well for Memphis. They get length, spacing, solid shooting and defense plus a very good young post player who will learn from Z-Bo and Marc. The Raps are truly NBA purgatory! That team as presently constructed better run and run all night. The Pistons get a floor leader would should be dope running pick and rolls with Andre and high screens with Greg. The pistons should now contend for that final playoff spot if this trade actually goes through.

This is what happens when you hire John Hollinger as a consultant for personnel.

  • LeroyShonuff

He gonna thrive in Det. He got bigs who can cover his tracks defensively. Good spot for him.

  • LeroyShonuff

Yep! Jose is great for that team

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Apparently. Those numbers he plays around with don’t tell the whole story. They’ll see come playoff time.

  • Redd

They could’ve gotten Wiggins if they’d have sucked enough Stern could’ve rigged the lottery to get Wiggins. Raptors would’ve became a great team and the market would substantially grow because a Canadian player was leading it.

    This was dumb.

  • Lloyd

Wasn’t a basketball decisio, it was a money decision. Small market franchises…we gotta shell out to compete, and then either pay luxery taxes or ship out some guys. Sad reality of not being the Lakers or Mavs. Grizz were going to make some noise this year too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    This trade is so gay

  • TV63

Grizzlies pretty much blew up their team.

  • Redd

Both teams lose in the long run.

  • TV63

I’m not a Grizzley fan but I feel for you guys. Don’t get it at all to blow up this team. Owner will really be crying the blues when they start to fall. There was no reason for the rush.

  • Groves

Hamed Haddadi may be happier in a more international city like Toronto

  • danpowers

oh sh*t the pistons just put a curse on them for dumping prince like the knicks back then when they dumped ewing.

  • danpowers

    amen

  • ErnieD

Prince with Z, Gas and TA make them a great defensive team. They just lost some points, so other guys will have to step up and score. Detroit should be commended for trading TP away from a team that lost the plot when they got Ben Gordon and Charlie V.

  • Max

In what universe is Daye a post player?

  • Max

    F*ckin’ Rudy Gay man!

  • roscoe

bummer griz fan… i feel even worse for rudy… unreal.

  • danpowers

i feel for you guys. another proof that the lockout was just a joke to dump player salaries. i didnt see any positive change for small market teams. the opposite seems to be the case

  • Bojangles

    He’s talking about Davis.

  • Ty

They were under the salary cap guys. They did not have to trade him

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Ross, Demar, and Rudy Gay= everybody new 2K team. Rudy will be an all star next year.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Grizzlies just traded the only guy they had who could create his own shot off the dribble.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Conley can but he’s inconsistent. Bayless can too but he’s O.C.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The lockout was supposed to make it better for small market teams to have a shot at winning. OKC and now Memphis (two of the top teams) have both had to trade away one of their best players.
