Jermaine O’Neal and Suns GM Reportedly Had a Heated Confrontation

All is apparently not too well in the desert, as news of an intense confrontation between veteran big man Jermaine O’Neal and Suns GM Lance Blanks has been reported by Yahoo!: “O’Neal and [general manager Lance] Blanks engaged in a blistering, expletive-laced confrontation in the coach’s office on Monday, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. ‘It was really bad,’ one Suns source said Tuesday afternoon. The confrontation happened after interim coach Lindsey Hunter’s first practice and unfolded within earshot of several Suns players in the locker room, sources said. It was immediately unclear what precipitated the disagreement, sources said, but there has been considerable unrest within the organization. At 13-28, the Suns have the worst record in the Western Conference. The Arizona Republic reported Tuesday that O’Neal missed practice with an ‘unstated medical issue’ and wouldn’t make the team’s trip to Sacramento. Blanks didn’t immediately respond to a text message. The Suns fired coach Alvin Gentry and replaced him with Hunter, who worked in player development and has no coaching background. O’Neal has averaged 6.4 points and four rebounds a game for the Suns in his 16th season in the NBA.”

Robert Sarver, i hope you get really drunk and read this website, because this is important.
    .
    Lance Blanks HAS to go.
    .
    He has to. Now.

In the Arizona desert, all confrontations are heated.

So this has nothing to do with Jermaine? Dude seems like he’s been a bit rotten over the last couple.

  • Redd

Do you also like Hunter at coach?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no. this is about Blanks. Blanks brought in Lindsey Hunter this season to look over Gentry’s shoulder. Lindsey Hunter has absolutely no coaching experience. He’s just Blanks’ buddy. Jermaine O’neal (and many other players) are PISSED about how this went down. It’s the same reason Dan Majerle, and maybe even Elston Turner will not be returning to the team.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well yes i do actually. but that is besides the point. it’s about how this went down. not what actually happened.

  • roscoe

nfl sideline conversations make nba front office-player talks look like a church talks.

some nba agents make me laugh… who cares?

Man, him and Ben Wallace were 2 of my favourite players growing up.

  • LakeShow

    Ahh, I see.
Well isn’t it best to have Gentry gone right now?
So they know somewhat what they are doing right?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i totally understand firing Gentry. I totally understand hiring Hunter. — The thing is, Blanks created a job just for Lindsey Hunter. And Lindsey Hunter has been in the background all season. Even barking instructions from the 2nd row, behind the Suns bench. HE WASN’T A COACH! — and now he is the Suns interim head coach, over guys who have been waiting in the wings for years. Just the way it went down, all of it, from the day Hunter was hired has been bad juju.

It was a question aside from the article, I think you’re an AZ fan so I was curious. I think he has great potential.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    oh that’s my bad.
    .
well i live here, don’t really feel an allegiance tho.
    — anyway, i do really like the idea of him as a coach, he is a smart, people person type basketball mind. Orlando came really close to giving him the job last summer i guess. BUT, i just don’t know how it’s going to work with this roster. First of all, they don’t want him to be the coach. They all wanted Majerle or Turner. And if he coaches how he played, then this will be a defense first team. Yet, they don’t have a defense first roster.
    .
Just doesn’t seem like the right way to go about this. Right decision or not.

  • Redd

I agree, but if he’s defensive minded like Thibs(who I believe he was under for just a bit) then it’s worth it because Thibs can get players with the least defensive prowess going.

But you do have a point, this roster isn’t geared towards what Hunter probably has in mind.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

why do you think that about Thibodeau?
    .
He had Kevin Garnett & has Joakim Noah. I mean, having a top 5 defensive big is kind of the first step towards having the best defense in the league. It’s also the only step that is basically a rule.
    .
You think he could do that with Marcin Gortat & Luis Scola (with Shannon Brown, Goran Dragic, and Michael Beasley getting heavy minutes)? lol, Gortat is good, but there is a pretty huge difference between him and the guys Thibs has had lead his defenses. And those other guys are some of the worst defensive players in the league at their respective positions. No defensive mind is turning this team into a solid defensive unit, imo. no way.

  • Redd

Thibs has made Boozer decent on Defense..Boozer. Even Rip is “all right”.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Boozer has always been a decent man defender. He’s just short. So with the Thibs system, he looks decent to good because his weakness is made up for immediately.
    .
Rip is basically in the same situation, except he isn’t a good man defender, he just doesn’t have to guard anyone. Ask Jimmy Butler about last night if you aren’t sure. ;)

  • Redd

Jimmy played great, he’s close to being the greatest player ever.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

haha, he could be a LeBron/Bill Russell hybrid.

  • flows

Not to rub it in to the rest of America but it’s a great 77 degree day here today. It’s January 22nd. Lol

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Old dude playing on a horrible team full of young players. Not a good combination. Never understood why he signed with them in the first place. Maybe he just needed to collect some checks. He’ll retire at the end of the season. Call it a career.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    seriously tho, it is.

  • RunNGun

So, uh, when can they send in the INS and see if the Suns players are legal immigrants?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

Yes sir. About time too. Tired of these frigid 30 degree nights.

  • Max

Miracle doctors and fountain of youth.

  • Max

I’ve never understood the whole temperature thing in ‘Murica.
30 Degrees at night over here means you won’t be able to sleep. That’s like the highest it gets during summer.

Sarver is just as much of an issue, everyone has to go.

  • Lloyd

It’s Fahrenheit scale whereas you’re country would be using Celsius.30 fahrenheit is still only -1 degrees celsius. In Toronto right now it’s -18 fahrenheit or -28 celsius. And that’s not even the coldest in the country..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Sarver is a moron. But he doesn’t treat people like sh*t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

Agreed. But whether u have poor people skills (Blanks) or are just a moron (Sarver) u have no place running a team. The record, and their freefall since the 2010 WCF shows that clearly.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, well calling for Sarver’s head doesn’t do anything tho. gotta just try and complain about what is actually fixable. if we keep bitching about Sarver we are just going to be the most bitter people ever. lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

but really, cant someone do something? Dude has been sub par ever since he got to Phoenix

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no, nobody can do anything. and Sarver has only been a “bad owner” since the economy took a sh*t. before that, he just had bad management giving him bad advice. He’s always been willing to spend.
