Kobe Bryant Blames Himself for the Lakers’ Latest Loss

Asked to chase around point guards the last few games, not too surprisingly, Kobe Bryant’s field goal percentage has begun to fall off a cliff. He struggled once again on Sunday to find the mark (10 of 32 from the field), leading to the Los Angeles Lakers’ latest defeat. Bryant said he’s happy to take the blame for the team’s second consecutive defeat. From Twitter, the LA Times and Daily News: “This one is on me. Couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean if I was sitting on a boat. Had plenty of easy looks, #noexcuses gotta get my legs back … No one is more critical of my game then me. #brickcity past few games but they will fall and we will win #countonit.’ [...] ‘I’ve just got to rest my legs, man. My shot’s just short,’ he said after scoring 26 points on dreadful 10-for-32 shooting. ‘That’s on me. I’ll take this loss on me, gladly. There’s a lot of easy shots, a lot of them, that I should put down. And I will.’ Bryant will have barely 24 hours to rest. The Lakers continue a three-game trip Monday in Chicago. [...] ‘This team needs me on both ends of the floor,’ said Bryant. ‘So unless they’re going to do something roster-wise, I have to continue to push through it.’ Does Bryant believe the Lakers’ front office needs to make a move? ‘No,’ he said. ‘Listen, if this is what we’re rolling with, I can’t make excuses. I have to go out there and do my job.’”

they would have to play like .750 ball from now on to have a shot at the playoffs

  • Jay Cutler

Isn’t this the same guy that said his teammates should focus more on giving him open looks since he no longer has the option of taking entire defensive sequences off?

  • Max

    Say that again Kobe?

  • zogs19994

AS A LAKERS FAN, I CAN HONESTLY SAY…
IT NOT KOBE’S FAULT THAT WERE DOING BAD THIS SEASON
….BUT I WAS KOBE’S FAULT WE LOST YESTERDAY LOL

    STORY. OF. THE. YEAR.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

It’s okay Kobe, it was kind of the writing on the wall with the 10 for 32…

  • RKJ92

Man even I’m still in shock he said it.. just wow..

  • Redd

It’s as if he assumed it might be someone else’s fault & that he’s willing to take it for them..lol Kobe.

I was at the game yesterday in Toronto. He really was trying to get the bigs going in the first and second quarter. I was shocked to learn that he had taken 8 shots in the first quarter when I got on Twitter. In person, they all seemed in fluidity with the offense. I remember looking up at half time and he only had like 6 points with 4 assists.

Pau was great down low yesterday. The chemistry between Kobe and Dwight, and even Nash and the rest of the players is still not there. A lot of communication, broken plays, etc. It seems that Kobe and Pau want to do it the old way (more post ups, more triangle-like spancing), whereas Mike and Nash want to do it so that the ball is constantly moving, constantly going from one player to another.

Kobe didn’t even get going until the 3rd/4th. Its funny because you could tell the Lakers didn’t even start trying until there was about 6 minutes left in the 4th.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Well, to be fair, at one point, the Lakers line up on the floor for 4-5 minutes was Sacre, Clark, Kobe, Duhon, and either Morris or MWP. I believe the Raptors went on a huge run at that time, and Kobe had to shoot (poorly) literally every time down the floor. He was horrible yesterday but so were the rest of his teammates (minus Pau).

  • Mike From Spain

This is a bit like seeing a cow fly or something like that

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Not always his fault that the team loses. He was terrible yesterday, but their defensive problems are beyond just Kobe’s lapses.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

dude, you don’t have to defend Kobe everyday. This is the one time he’s taken responsibility this season. Let it cook.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Again, false. He’s blamed himself for turnovers, leadership responsibilities, etc, earlier in the season and takes accountability for defensive lapses as well. That’s not to say that he’s not in the wrong – he was terrible yesterday and had poor shot selection till the 3rd – but I don’t accept the assertion that the loss was entirely on him. The Lakers suck defensively, with or without Kobe in the lineup. Calderon was abusing the crap out of Nash all game.

That Dwight ejection also didn’t help.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    You don’t get it.
    .
Kobe is taking responsibility for a loss. — everyone knows it isn’t 100% on him, we aren’t 7 year olds who take every word completely literally.
    .
    stop defending him.
    .
especially to me. you aren’t going to tell me anything i don’t already know.

  • Redd

No I agree, the bench is very weak. I’m not mentioning his implication on the GM side I mean he makes it seem as though he’s taking other player’s blame(i.e. Pau, Dwight).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

No, you don’t know everything – relax with the arrogance. Its a discussion. Why even comment if you believe that you can’t learn from other commenters?

It doesn’t seem like you watch many Laker games outside of the odd TNT/ESPN game, which is why I question most of the claims you make on this board re: the Lakers.

  • theDankerNuggets

it’s interesting because it really seems like Kobe has been hearing the criticisms this year, and has been changing the way he does things because of them.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s not a discussion. i didn’t ask for you to respond to me. and when you did, i told you to stop. because YOU, not everyone, YOU, are not going to tell me anything i don’t already know. not trying to offend you, but your view of Kobe is tired. I already understand everything you are going to say about him. I already know, day after day, you will come in and defend him, even for the smallest of things. Like me saying, “story. of. the. year.” – which you obviously took much too literally.

    .

So stop, stop responding to me about Kobe when i literally said nothing that is even worth discussing.

.”It doesn’t seem like you watch many Laker games outside of the odd TNT/ESPN game, which is why I question most of the claims you make on this board re: the Lakers.”: – Are you f*cking high? I didn’t say anything about the Lakers. And when i do, i’ve been one of the most optimistic people here about them. You want to have an actual discussion about the Lakers? — fine. Do it somewhere or with someone who actually said something about the Lakers and Kobe Bryant. Don’t do it on one comment that is clearly sarcasm just because you have one nut named after Kobe and it itches everytime you think someone might have said something possibly negative about him.

  • LobCity

Not really an apology. Great player, horrible leader. Read the ESPN LA article byMcMenamin, has more quotes.

“Everybody wants to know what’s the reason, whose fault it is and this, that and the other,” Bryant said. “I just made it more easy. You should just point the finger at me. Let me take all that. This way, we won’t have to worry about that as a team. It’s part of my responsibility. I’ll take [the criticism] and we can just focus on what we do best, which is playing together and trying to figure out how to get out of this losing.”

Bryant’s declaration jibes with a comment he made recently, in which he said that nobody remembers why a team lost when they look back at an unsuccessful season. They just remember that they lost.

  • The Philosopher

SLAM is the greatest site in the ENTIRE history of… all time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Yeah, I would agree with the poor leader assertion. I mean, even during his most successful Laker seasons post-Shaq, it was PJ and Fish that really led the team. Kobe is good at inspiring teammates with this individualistic on-court play, but he clearly does not handle losing very well from a leadership perspective. His solution to problems is to “will through it” or “work hard through it” and that sounds good, but it doesn’t always work.

He “willed” himself to a 10-32 shooting night.

  • LakeShow

    ehhh…

Gaurav has seemed like a really nice guy, with a good understanding of ball, I don’t know why you just went off like this, but do you man…

Sorry if this isn’t a permitted discussion to you…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

If what isn’t a permitted discussion? I said nothing for him to say this about, and when I said to stop, he ignored me and said what he said anyway. So pardon me for being honest after I already told the guy to stop.

  • RKJ92

I’m with NBK on this one.. Gaurav is very biast with Kobe and constantly says anything and everything to defend or boost him even if the situation doesn’t relate to him from every article I’ve read. Truthfully I don’t feel NBK went off on him he is just fed up with him.

  • RKJ92

They need a slam app for your phone lol, that would be tight.

  • LakeShow

    Fair enough.
Seemed a little unwarranted, he never has stricken me as a one nut named after Bryant type of guy. Maybe I haven’t seen him post as much as I thought.

  • shutup

    WTF??? lmao

  • k2

You’re a whiny b!tch. ((Soft yet squeaky lady voice)) “Ohhhh look at me I’m nbk. Nobody can have a discussion with me unless I permit it. Waaaah waaah pass me my baba and my lipstick”.

  • k2

    shut up

  • LakeShow

Yes, how may I help you sir?

    You catch that free fight?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

    Intriguing rant.

I will only address 2 points that you said, and you can be rest assured that I won’t be addressing you or your comments on this site moving forward.

” i didn’t ask for you to respond to me”…

Responding to comments on SLAM does not require the permission of the original poster. People comment and post what they want because they have an opinion to offer.

“Don’t do it on one comment that is clearly sarcasm just because you have one nut named after Kobe”

I found this particularly assuming because of your obvious hypocrisy. You make it a point to dive into every Kobe-related thread yourself and do pretty much the same thing that you accuse me or any other Laker fan of doing, but from an opposing perspective – your nuts just itch in a different spot.

Thanks for the debates – they’ve been fun.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you realize you are whining about you perceiving me to be whining, right?
    .
    the more you know.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you realize you are whining about you perceiving me to be whining, right?
    .
    the more you know.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no sir, you don’t understand. 1 – i didn’t ask you to respond to me. and didn’t engage you when you did. So it is NOT a discussion. You calling it that, doesn’t make it so. So again, i didn’t ask you to respond to me. Congratulations on doing so. I didn’t say that wasn’t allowed. But just like that situation literally sits, the fact that this isn’t a discussion literally sits the same way. Respond all you want. But don’t expect me to entertain your insistence on defending Kobe when there is no defending to be done. I am going to tell you straight everytime i respond to you. like it or not, that’s how it works.

    .

and again, you are either high, or don’t actually read what is said on this website. i have been defending the Lakers and their ridiculous decisions for the logical sense that they do make for the entirety of this whole decrepit season. The only real negative OPINION i’ve had of the Lakers thus far this season is that they will probably not make the playoffs at this point. Other then that, i’ve criticized Kobe for his TEAM defense and lack of accountability (which are real things that have evidence to back them up – denied by you or not). I haven’t said a single thing about how many shots he takes or whatever it is you are referring to when you spout off this ignorance —> “It doesn’t seem like you watch many Laker games outside of the odd TNT/ESPN game, which is why I question most of the claims you make on this board re: the Lakers.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i haven’t had a problem with him up until the end of last week when he just kept going about Kobe. I thought maybe he was having a bad day. i mean, i was surprised i went that long without reaching the point of saying something. i was even gonna let it go today until he just kept going.

  • k2

Nuh uh. The first sentenced was said in my deepest, most masculine tone of voice. Like, the black dude from the All State commercials. You have to read it in that tone. The quote was said kinda like Elvira from Tiny Toon Adventures, but on purpose. See the difference?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • k2

That’s because you never watched Tiny Toon Adventures. I’m convinced you had no childhood.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    man.
    .
that response is more along the lines of,
    .
“well that is crazy………but i guess”

  • LakeShow

I see your perspective. Even myself, i’ll take a break here and there lol. You gotta see it from Lakers fans POV also though. Tough season, and everyone is coming down on our boy KB (despite a great (at least ‘offensive’) year) about it. It hasn’t been rainbows all year, nawwhatymean?
I ended up booking nights at a hotel in Tucson for the festival…. bad idea. Read a few reviews and I guess this place has a roach infestation, and piss stains everywhere… Earths butthole? Can’t deny it… Camping might be better lmao.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

but why come at me? i have been extremely optimistic about the Lakers all season, i mean, and it’s me. you aren’t picking at someone who is going to just let it go. lol.
    .
There are some ok hotels in Tuscon, but not many. It’s just a horrible place. So horrible.

  • LakeShow

Because he know’s he can have a legitimate conversation with you.
Your not going to go into CAP LOCKS and you will admit to points when they are made. Those are my assumptions.
Your the main commenter on here, so people will try to validate their opinions with you. I think he just wanted you to admit that KB does take the blame more often than he’s given credit for.
He’s given credit, never.(by non fans) And is blamed usually. (by non fans) He was probably looking for a little validation in his claims that KB can take credit for the teams bad moments sometimes, when we have been told that he never does or will.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

lol… I can’t wait to check this place out. All the nice hotels (ie Holiday Inn) are like 160 a night… So I checked into Super 8 since it was a bill a night and that’s where the roaches reviews started pouring in lol.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well this season, he (Kobe) has basically deflected all accountability. there is no way i’m going to give him credit for admitting to turnovers or something trivial. this, he’s taking too much credit. which i completely respect. i don’t want to turn this one time where he is being incredibly accountable, and try and spread this out over the past where it doesn’t belong.
    .
it’s like finding a spec of gold and telling people you’ve found a gold mine. just be happy with what you have, and go from there.
    .
but if that’s why he was doing that with me then i appreciate that. but i’m not going to change the way i comment for it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

just use your hotel room to sleep, and maybe bring your own blankets lol. it’ll be just fine. in terms of being nice for hanging out inside of an asshole.

  • LakeShow

    Fair.

  • LakeShow

Seriously, a roach never killed anyone…
I should quit being a girl.
    Right? lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, Roaches aren’t going to seek you out anyway. that wouldn’t even matter to me haha

  • k2

Now that you say it, it was more like that hahaha. My bad

  • LakeShow

Especially considering my other option is sleeping on the ground inside a loosely held together mesh lining with broken zippers..
It was more the crumbles of food in the sheets and piss stains that were holding me back.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol, i’m good with my gifs

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

why don’t you just camp in your car? you got an SUV?

  • LakeShow

Nah, Infiniti G37 S coupe…. It will get me there in comfort and very quickly, but not allot of room, at all, otherwise I would without a doubt.
I’m buying a motor-home soon, but it’s not here yet.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well atleast you got some loot

  • LakeShow

Naw you probably make more or around what I make. I just don’t have a wifey and kid(s). I’m the proud father of a sporty luxo-coupe :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

LakeShow, I was reading your comments at work, and I appreciate you having my back. I will say though that I don’t need validation for my opinions from any commenter on this site, and neither should you or anyone else, really. Its a message board, and nobody here is commenting from a perspective other than fandom. Its OK to have an opinion that goes against the beehive mentality.

  • LakeShow

My conversation was between me and nbk. I was attempting to validate no one. I saw what appeared to be an unwarranted spiel.

Anyone that I see as a decent commenter, I will stick up for, whether they like it or not. It’s for me, not you.

I felt nbk went off unwarranted, and for ME, I took a stand on where a felt about “commenter Bob”… Who happened to be you.

You do whatever you damn please online, just as I will, just as nbk will.

On another note: Bulls tonight baby! :) Should be a fun one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

This is actualyl exactly what he was like. people need to go watch the postgame interview. it wasnt “Man, i’ve been bad, things are all on me.” It was a more “Im the leader, so i’ll take the blame because i’ve seen worse situations, and I just dont want the guys pointing fingers at eachother.” Not necessarily, cuz he thinks it IS his fault or not. But its good from a leadersip perspective, it just isnt what everyone is making it out to be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

my comment was in regards to the season as a whole, but for this game, i think its fair to say he blamed his off shooting for the loss, and willingly took the blame for the loss.

  • Redd

No, I mean I definitely think it’s good on him to try & get guys focused and him taking the criticism.

Hopefully they don’t decide to focus tonight lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

I got dibbs on the Lakers. Still mad over the Raptors game, so the Bulls are enemy number one right now ;) Plus, they got the best Canadian player of all time running the show, so more incentive there lol

  • shutup

Yeah, Belfort looked tough, don’t know if this was a setup fight for Silva’s next fight but it would be pretty weak to see him fight Silva again, age is catching up with him (Belfort). The WTF? was shock, because I’m pretty sure you read almost every Laker article and Mr.P is pretty fanatical about his Kobe defense, just shocked you never saw it or picked up on it, I guess if maybe he was a Bulls fan or Heat fan you might have seen it earlier.

  • shutup

    Original……..

  • GBtha G

No the reason of the lakers struggles iz dat current coach.a real joke.

  • LakeShow

I honestly was surprised at how good Belfort looked, but he’s not going to beat Silva… The only people that want to see that fight again are Brazilians.
Bisping is such an elusive striker I couldn’t believe Vitor caught him with the same kick twice and nearly knocked him out with it both times.
I’m pumped for this Saturdays fight though!
    In regards to the fella:
Yes, I could tell he was a fan of the Lakers, but he didn’t seem fanatical Fairly realistic compared to allot of fans, but maybe I wasn’t catching all his posts.

  • shutup

As attractive as a Silva vs GSP fight would be, I don’t see GSP being able to do anything to Silva. GSP gets hit way too much, and Silva has had better wrestlers on top of him (Sonnen, Henderson). Also GSP doesn’t really finish fights, so not sure what he would try to do (maybe Sonnen him? and lay on top for a win) Maybe Belfort should fight that young wrestler (Weidman) for the next shot at the title.IDK just want Silva to retire undefeated in the UFC.
