Kobe Bryant Says He’s the Greatest One-on-One Player Ever

When it comes to going mano-a-mano on a basketball court, few in NBA history have ever done it better than Kobe Bryant. And he knows it. So much so, that Bean claims he’s the greatest of all time in that department. Per a fun, lengthy Q&A with ESPN: “Who would you most like to play one-on-one, either active or retired? ‘Jordan. No question.’ What would happen? ‘I’m not sure, but he would win some and I would win some in a seven-game series. It would probably come down to the last few shots.’ You versus LeBron? Who wins? ‘Me. No question. As far as one-on-one, I’m the best to ever do it.’ Damn. That’s pretty confident. ‘LeBron is a terrific all-around, five-on-five basketball player who’s an all-time great. But I’d get him.’ Who could get you? ‘Kevin Durant is the guy that would give me the most trouble. With his length and ability to use the dribble, he’d be tough.’ I always wanted to see you play Tracy McGrady. ‘I played T-Mac. I cooked him. Roasted him. Wasn’t even close. Ask him, he’ll tell you. When I was about 20, we were in Germany doing some promotional stuff for that other sneaker company and we played basketball every day. We were in the gym all the time. We played three games of one-on-one to 11. I won all three games. One game I won 11-2. After the third game he said he had back spasms and couldn’t play anymore.’ [...] What about Kyrie Irving? ‘[Huge smile, laugh.] Kyrie’s my boy, but he knows he doesn’t have anything for me. He doesn’t want to see me. But it would be fun. I’ve beaten a lot of guys one-on-one, like Reggie Miller and Grant Hill. I used to play Caron Butler all the time in practice when he was with the Lakers. When I was a rookie I used to get Nick Van Exel and Eddie Jones. They know. They’ll tell you. They used to come at me hard but I wasn’t having that. I love going one-on-one with someone. That’s what I do. I’ve never lost. It’s a whole different game, just to have them right in front of you and be able to do whatever you want.’”

    kobe the great player…..no question….

  • shutup

As for being hard to guard, how about Magic Johnson? Too big for the little guys to fast for the big guys, can play all positions, and he’s a natural born winner.

  • rande3p

I love when people comment and say he’s selfish … c’mon man 5 rings, 7 finals.. in two-ish semi-different eras … anyways he ain’t lying when it comes to one on one in their primes.. it’s kobe v. jordan as the 2 v. 1 seed … that is all

  • rande3p

I think tony parker one on one would take Kyrie.. the floaters and pivots and fakes in the lane are unstoppable

  • blankob3

maybe pippen can stop him a couple of games playing at the united center, but pippen woulnt score more than 3 buckets

  • Max

    SLAM, what have you done!?!

  • R.D3

ALLEN IVERSON! As far as one on one goes its like this: 1. Allen Iverson, 2. Michael Jordan, 3. Kobe………Put it this way though, if they played possession all the way and Allen Iverson had the ball first, nobody would get it back. You would have to pick your poison, either he will blow right by you for 11 straight points or you can sag off him and let him shoot….your only hope would be A.I. misses the jumper. He was also a pest on the defensive end, very skilled and smart he knew how to shake defenders and his killer quickness+ball handling skills and overall skill made him unguardable, you had to react to his every move or else you would be in the dust, Kobe knows this about A.I. and he has stated it.

the man is a beast one on one

  • Marcuz

92 Jordan was nice but I think 88 Jordan would be a better match up…

  • Marcuz

Isn’t the same ‘marketing’ the reason Kobe still gets 1st team all defensive votes to this day??

  • FLIGHT 9

I don’t like Kobe. But he is fucking right!!!! mj vs. kobe 1 0n 1 is too close to call. MJ is the GOAT though….

  • http://www.facebook.com/DanielUpYours Daniel Powers

wouldnt be too tough to call. on offense jordan was always one step faster and a little stronger than kobe. only thing on offense that kobe was/is better at are long twos, but how much do you use these efficiently in a one on one game? especially when the defender is mj. coz this is where it aint even close, mj was far better defensively. thats a no-brainer: mj all the way

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

    Also worth mentioning.

  • Gman

truth…shit he almost made the Wizards make it lol

  • Jordan Lawson

How do u forget Melo??? he is right there with Kobe as the best one on one player in the NBA

  • Jordan Lawson

Dang, that is very true…. But, Kobe has all the tricks, moves and counters; you cannot force him one way, you cant bait him into shooting a jumper because he will drain it, if you get on him he will blow by you, if you play slightly off of him he will pullup right in your face. He also has the dribble pullups mastered like no other besides maybe Jerry West or Michael Jordan.

Everyone would love to see that happen. It likely never will.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Not if they play make it take it.

  • Sheldon

Mike would sweep Kobe. No questions asked.

  • http://www.facebook.com/grasshoper.funk Grasshoper Funk

I’m sorry I forgot, you’re more than right! LBJ, Kobe, Durant, Melo, Westbrook, Harden, Irving and (in order to spice things up a little bit) Griffin. Oh, please, make it happen!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/grasshoper.funk Grasshoper Funk

Probably, it never will. Because everyone will say “Basketball is a team sport and the here in the NBA we don’t promote self-play” and stuff like that. But I have a counterpoint in that. Why wouldn’t this competition be allowed while at the same time it takes only one person at a time to win the 3-point and the dunk contest…?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i really wish i could find them man. i really really tried.

  • max

to be honest i think hakeem would have a fair shot at beating jordan 1-1…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Walt Frazier

  • MrGodbold

Playground style play would come in handy. Imagine trying to keep Jamal Crawford still. And only an inch shorter than Kobe. Also I think if somebody beat Michael the competitor in him would never let them win again. His footwork. His ball gripping pump fake would create so much room. He averaged 37.1 in 86-87 and scored 3041 pts and played every game. He’s got 39 50pt gms. He was servin’ Fooz after 35. Annually he plays with the Bobcats. The only owner with that capability. A few seasons ago Gerald Wallace said he could get you 20 without question.

  • aicomeback

thats a bunch of crap of course half of the nba is based upon iso play style

  • aicomeback

i meant the nba saying that they dont promote self play is a bunch of crap i agree with you lol

  • bigAfan

Wow man, you totally opened my eyes! Your are the man!!

  • bigA

Thats right yall, the man with the masterplan.

What was AI’s mindset? Vince used to drive to the basket a LOT during his rookie year and his second year. He slowed down once he got jumper’s knee and came back too early and re-injured it again. That was the start of his downfall.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

To be fair, it would be like Wizards Jordan trying to lock up AI in 2002. The fact that Kobe did a great job defensively against one of the best PGs in Kyrie needs to be applauded.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I think they are more afraid of the injury wish and possible hurt feelings, to be honest. They use the “team play” excuse, but that’s not really it.

  • The Spaniard

It won’t happen because of marketing.

Imagine what would become of the “superstar” who got murdered in a 1-on-1 match-up.

    Q-Rating disaster, for sure.

  • robb

are you kidding? His size and weak D would make him an easy prey. Kobe would destroy him.

  • Kato Williams

Great idea but unfortunately it will never happen. Players wouldn’t want to put themselves out there, if they lost or got blown out they would probably be embarrassed.

Some would be willing, but I think egos would get in the way.

What if Kobe & LeBron played? Whoever lost would never hear the end of it and their respective fan boys would forever talk about it. Too risky.

I’d love to see Westbrook and Rose though, just because both are so explosive and athletic. That would be a frantic matchup.

  • Kato Williams

Inch for inch AI is probably the GOAT 1 v 1 player. Offensively at least.

  • m

    LMAO

AI would roast ur ass kobe shut ur damn mouth

and MJ is the best at everything so be quiet

    MJ would cook ur ass

  • m

    and Lebron is unguardable

people say lebron isn’t a good 1 on 1 player

how about when he took the pistons 1 on5 …the greatest defensive team of all time he beat by himself

be quiet….lebron is gonna go down as the 2nd best player ever

  • m

whoever says lebron isn’t a great 1 on 1 player is totally fucking braindead just shut up and watch some film

lebron is unstoppable when he’s focused and hell lock u down

  • z

U honestly are the best analyst of kobe, his game, etc that comments on this site regularly. I can tell you’re a fan but u maintain objectivity unlike most others when the topic is kobe. Regarding kob’s status in one on ones: i gotta go with prime AI if its make it take it. 01 was kob’s defensive peak and…well al torched him. Repeatedly fyi im a big fan of kobe.

  • z

Well said. Point made. I realized this a long time ago and chose to rank my fave players based on how aesthetically pleasing they are (thus kob, ai, tmac, melo) and the fact is that bron’s offensive scoring skills remind me of karl malone’s…ugh. great plyer and i root for him buuut…cant match the others for scoring style. At the end of the day that says more about me than about how good the players are.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

    Thanks dude, appreciate it.

  • AjFromTheDMV

Hakeem Olajuwon would wash most players in a one on one game… But I would get so hyped to see a 1 on 1 tournament @ All-Star Weekend. Irving vs Chris Paul, Rose v Westbrook, Kobe v Melo. Lebron vs anyone. Make it happen NBA!

  • Justin G

I agree, Pippen was a better defender than Payton. Payton could lock you down on the perimiter and to a slightly lesser extent, in the post but Pippen could do both those things plus block your shot. He played the passing lanes better and he could recover better if he was doubling down low and had to get back to his man at the top.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

Wow. I agree with Nbk. Tell the world, I agree with Nbk!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

If that was true Shaq would be the best ever, or Hakeem, or Ewing

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

    Amen
