Kobe Bryant Says the LA Clippers are NBA Championship Contenders

Los Angeles’ two hoops teams will square off tonight in a highly-anticipated matchup. Kobe Bryant was very complimentary of his Staples Center neighbors, the Clippers. The Lakers superstar says that not only is Jamal Crawford the Sixth Man of the Year, but that Lob City is in the NBA title hunt. Per the LA Daily News: “One team reminds Kobe Bryant of the Showtime Lakers. The Clippers. ‘They’re very spectacular and fun to watch,’ he said. ‘There’s no question about it. They have higher jumpers than Showtime.’ There’s one team that Bryant considers a team the Lakers will have to go through should they win an NBA championship. The Clippers. Said Bryant: ‘They’re one of the top contenders.’ Sense a pattern Once they remained nothing more than a punchline and an opponent the Lakers could automatically pencil with a win. Now the Clippers (25-8) lead the Western Conference and enter Friday’s game against the Lakers (15-16) in a designated home game at Staples Center fielding plenty of compliments from the team’s star. Bryant credited Chris Paul for changing the Clippers’ culture. Bryant touted Jamal Crawford as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. And Bryant sounded well aware on public sentiment after seeing the Clippers’ 17-game winning streak and the Lakers struggling to stay around .500. ‘They expect the Clippers to come in there (Friday) and run all over us,’ Bryant said. ‘I find it interesting.’ [...] After all these years the Clippers viewed their Los Angeles counterparts as a benchmark, the roles have reversed. The Lakers haven’t lost a season series to the Clippers since 1992-93. A Clippers victory Friday would make them 2-0 against the Lakers with two more left this season. The Lakers suddenly need this win more than the Clippers. ‘Obviously from a record standpoint,’ Bryant said. ‘Absolutely.’”

Horry Jr’s gassin’ the Clippers up, tryna to put them at ease and then come at their necks during the playoffs. Don’t fall for it CP3, Blake, Crawford, et. al.

“The Lakers haven’t lost a season series to the Clippers since 1992-93.”

    for some perspective in 1993:

    1. the buffalo bills lost their 3rd consecutive super bowl

    2. b.clinton started his first term as president

    3. intel shipped its first Pentium chips

    4. mj completed his first three-peat.

  • Max

    I guess so..

  • Dymez

I have a question for you, bro. Where does the “Horry, Jr.” title come from? I’ve seen you describe Kobe as such several times now, so I’m wondering why.

  • shockexchange

That’s what the streets is saying … “hands down the greatest winner of his era.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

not quite. they are one wrung down on the ladder

  • spit hot fiyah

just ignore him an maybe he will go away

  • Dymez

I don’t have a problem with the guy. I just wanted to know what he meant.

  • shockexchange

And after a veiled attack against his person, the Shock Exchange stands corrected. Horry Jr is not gassin’ the Chippers up, putting them at ease, planning to come at their necks in the playoffs. Thanks for clearing that up.

Today, yes. They need to tighten rotations and get fully healthy for me to get a good grasp on who they are. They are kinda small when they don’t play Jordan is one thing I have noticed. You really shouldn’t have Blake or Odom playing center, but that is their best crunch time line up. Interesting team that is for sure.
You remember any champ contenders playing like how they play? I don’t. 10-12 deep, fast pace, and on and off defensive awareness.

or Tim Duncan is. But whatever

  • LakeShow

    Your joking right?

Besides the depth and a similar-ish PG… I see nothing similar.

    damn kobe.. like that?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

i gotta say @disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus is on to something here

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well they aren’t carbon copies, but we can run through it.

    .

    the obvious,

    - Chris Paul and Isiah Thomas have just about the same effect on their team.

    - Vinnie Johnson and Jamal Crawford played pretty similarly and have the similar roles and effects on their team. — even scored just about the exact same amount of points per minute.

    - Both teams strength’s were defensive. (Both w/ 3rd ranked Defense in the NBA)

    - Neither play at a blistering fast paced, or a slow one. —- 95 possessions per 48 minutes for Det, 92 possessions per 48 minutes for LAC. (their pace ratings in terms of league rank are very different, but that spoke more about the state of the league, then the style of the teams)

    .

The main difference is Blake Griffin & Bill Lambieer, the Clippers get their post scoring from one primary place – The Pistons got theirs in multiple spots, while Lambieer stretched the floor and provided the tough defensive presence.

    .

Their offensive strengths varied, but the “engines” are mirrors. The results were similar as well (25-8 is Clippers record through 33 games – Pistons record was 22-11)
    .
I’d say they are pretty similar.

    .

  • LakeShow

Alright more similar than I was giving credit for.

Still sounds beyond weird to say: “The Clippers are like the championship Pistons of 89.” lol, but it does have merit.

I still don’t trust the Clippers defense which is something you couldn’t say for Detroit. The Clips are much more offensive based than DET was.

None the less, I see your point.

First you complain when Horry Jr gets added to the SLAM Top 5, and now this. How dare you disrespect Horry Jr son?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    WHAT

  • shockexchange

You went off for about a week when Horry Jr was ranked in the SLAM Top 5, claiming he was “overrated.” The Shock Exchange has had about enough of this.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you don’t know what the difference between an “Era” and a “Season” are?

  • shockexchange

The Clippers are mostly African-American and they play basketball. That’s the only thing they have in common with the ’89 Pistons. Stop it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i honestly don’t trust their defense either. but right now, i can’t front on what they’re doing.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    lol, talk about trolling.

  • LakeShow

Shock and I are the same person, as you can see, because we agreed.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

me and Sanchez are the same too

  • shockexchange

LakeShow speaks in 3rd person, now he’s co-signing the Shock Exchange. My dander is rising …

  • LakeShow

Maaaaaan, what have I told you about your rising dander???

    Head and Shoulders™!!
How many times I gotta say it…

  • shockexchange

    LOL

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lakeshow/ShockExchange – y’all got the same barber as Andrew Bynum huh?

  • shockexchange

(Fred Sanford voice) “Lizabeth I’m comin’ to join ya honey … I’ll be the one with Andrew Bynum haircut and Pulitzer Prize.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    lol pulitzer prize

  • shockexchange

    Actually that wasn’t a joke.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    i hope you win it.

You seem to be really interested in homosexuality for a man who claims to be straight….
    Interesting.
    Sit on that one.

  • LakeShow

    ooooh myyyy god….
This dude is actually kinda funny now.
I honestly thought he was a serious human being at first, because of the book, and seeming to care about society, and it’s pitfalls….
Now I see it’s a gag. And it is one of the better troll jobs that has been done here on SLAM, you and I have to admit.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    hahahha if you say sooooo

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez
