Kobe Bryant Wants Teammates to Get Him Better Looks

Following two straight games of stellar defense on Kyrie Irving and Brandon Jennings, Kobe Bryant struggled last night against Dwyane Wade on both ends of the floor. Following the loss to the Miami Heat, Bryant said he needs his teammates to step up offensively and help free him up. Per ESPN: “Not only did Bryant’s man on defense, Dwyane Wade, score 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting, but Bryant’s offense also struggled, as he scored just 22 points on 8-for-25 shooting (32 percent). Bryant, who leads the league in scoring at 29.7 points per game, said that alleviating some pressure on him on offense will in turn allow him to apply more pressure on defense. ‘If (guarding the opposing team’s offensive threat) is going to be something that I’m going to have to do for a while, I’m going to need my teammates’ help to free up offensively,’ Bryant said. ‘Like we did in the fourth quarter — create some picks for me, create some easy shots. That’s going to be tough for me to guard the top guy and come down the other end and have to go one-on-one every play. So, I’m going to need some help.’ He brought up the issue several times during his postgame remarks to the media. ‘I need some help offensively to save energy and not have to isolate and do things like that,’ Bryant said. ‘I’m going to need some picks. I’m going to need to catch-and-shoot like I did in the fourth quarter a little bit to make my job a little easier. I think the first three quarters of me just standing around the perimeter, the defense is praying for that. We have to do some things to free me up and get me in open spaces, this way I can be more active on the defensive end of the floor.’ Bryant started the game with just nine points on 3-for-16 shooting through the first three quarters before getting things going in the fourth, putting up 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting in the final frame thanks in part to getting open looks from the 3-point line off a screen set by Pau Gasol as well as a handoff assist from Gasol. ‘We talked about it going into the fourth quarter. I said, ‘Coach D man, goddamn. Come on, man. Come on, man. I can’t be standing out here like this all night long now,’ Bryant said, recalling a conversation with Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. ‘We did a much better job of that. My teammates know. We got to pick each other up. I’m going to go out there and do what I got to do defensively, and then on the offensive end of the floor we’ll pick each other up.’ Point guard Steve Nash, the man responsible for orchestrating the show on offense, agreed that the Lakers can make it easier on his fellow 17-year veteran teammate. [...] Howard suggested that the contributions of Wade, whom Bryant was assigned to keep in check, had a bigger impact on the outcome than LeBron James’ 39 points on 17-for-25 shooting on offense.”

    Amongst many, many other reasons.

  • Caboose

    Best.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

don’t get me started on Al Jefferson.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Best?

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

People seem to often mistake the player with the most skill as the best player. I think that’s why people still cite Kobe as better than LeBron, or better than MJ. He may be the most skilled player to ever lace ‘em up. He just isn’t the best.

  • Caboose

Oh I know your thoughts on him. It’s funny.

  • LakeShow

They played 1 on 1 last night?

Your the ultimate straw man of SLAM.

  • RayJr

Not very efficient though and it was painfully obvious last night. Very hard to watch as a Lakers fan.

  • RayJr

Yeah they are still getting to know eachother. Would you say they are ending their “preseason” at this point in the season?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    pretty much

  • LakeShow

If you actually WATCH the games, you realized that Miami set’s picks on nearly every single play. They are constantly moving and setting multiple screens.
The Lakers aren’t doing that, and they need to be.
Nash should be getting a pick from Pau or Dwight, or Kobe nearly every play.
Kobe should be given a pick nearly every time he gets the ball just like Wade and Bron do. It’s so much easier to play ball when your moving, cutting, screening and then repeating.
D’Antoni know’s this, so i’m not sure why it’s not being implemented.
The offense looks fine, but it should look great.
Defensively, still a work in progress, but looking better every game.

  • Brownjesus

You must have not watched the game. They go to Dwight early ever play and he either gets fouled or has to pass out. The field goal attempts are misleading.

In my opinion Dwights lack of post moves and soft touch are hurting his offense more than lack of touches

  • theDankerNuggets

I really respect Kobe for the most part. but sometimes I can’t help but think about how much of a self absorbed douche he must seem like to his teammates

  • RayJr

Even if Kobe has 5 rings compared to Duncan’s 4? I don’t think so.

  • Allenp

Why is it never Kobe’s fault that his big men don’t eat? Wasn’t his fault with SHAQ, or Pau or Bynum and now Dwight. Come one guys.

  • RayJr

That’s exactly what every sports/news site does not just SlamOnline.

  • The Philosopher

    Appreciate it. lol.

    That’s debateable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

According to popular opinion, it is always Kobe’s fault though.

However, the reality has been that Kobe has tried to get Dwight going early in games. As someone else mentioned, Dwight gets fed the ball a lot, but he either gets fouled, or has to pass out due to the defense. There were numerous sequences in the first quarter alone when teammates tried to get Dwight the ball and he either got fouled or the pass led to a turnover. The FGAs are misleading – they run it through Dwight quite a bit, especially early in the game.

  • Lorne

Shaq was the man for 3 of those 5 rings. Duncan was the man for 4 of his 4 rings. I’m going to yes, despite the total ring count. Duncan’s finals MVPs outnumber Kobe’s.

  • Bored

Kobe is more skilled than MJ and LBJ?

  • bill

And Pau was the man for his 5th ring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

He’s always been a more complete player overall (especially because he looks to make the best basketball play instead of the best individual play), but keep in mind Kobe at one point was a 30 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 5.9 apg, 2.2 spg player. He was a great two way player during this time.

  • RayJr

I see your point but Parker won the Finals MVP in 2007 so Duncan wasn’t the man for all 4 of those rings. So if your basing player rankings upon finals MVPs then Parker, Lebron, and Nowitzki are all equal right?

  • shutup

I meant as a dump into the post type player, not saying Dwight shouldn’t be getting more shots, just that Bynum has more tools with the ball in his hands, and so does Pau, so if Kobe wouldn’t concede to players with more offensive moves than Dwight why would he give up shots to let Dwight shoot? To answer your question; Having more moves doesn’t automatically make you a better offensive player, but it is a major component, Dwight imo scores more off of rebounds oops and players setting him up, Pau and Bynum can create shots for themselves better. Stat comparison Dwight and Howard have very similar career avgs (when they take the same number of shots)in almost every major category.

  • shutup

No, but if given the ball in the post Al Jefferson is a better offensive threat. It’s all about context. Unless you believe Dwight is a better post player then Jefferson, then we will have to agree to disagree.

Ok I’ve been reading all your opinions and this is what I’ve gathered from the article as well as viewing all Laker games this season. Kobe isn’t getting better looks because he isn’t moving efficiently without the ball. Too many times this season especially last night I saw Kobe trying to iso Wade giving many jab steps and finally making a move. It’s not always Kobe’s fault however. You have 2 7 footers. Run pin down and base line screens for Kobe and I promise he will get at least 5 easy looks per game. This has everything to do with the team as a whole. No one is getting easily looks and a lot of times they are contested rushed shots.

    I wouldn’t have written such a paragraph if I would’ve scrolled down -__-

If Kobe was as good a playmaker as most of his fans think, he would find a way to consistently get those bigs of his great looks on offense.

  • LakeShow

Naw, man you brought some good points up also.

  • The Philosopher

Kobe has never been efficient at moving without the ball. If he moves without the ball, and does not receive it afterward, he gets p!ssed, and ceases to move without the ball, again.
This has been a tendency of his, for a long time.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Thanks man. It’s just mine boggling that they don’t screen to death. With a playmaker like Nash, one big man who is probably the best pick and roll guy, a good pick and pop big man, and the Black Mamba himself this team should be getting the easiets looks imaginable.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Agreed. But like I said it’s his fault just as it’s the whole team’s fault. Kobe’s mentality keeps him from continuing a new strategy if it doesn’t work the first few times. But like you said it’s been happening for a long time so I doubt it’ll change.

  • LakeShow

Same could be said for Steve Nash…

  • LakeShow

    This is a fact.

  • LakeShow

    I hurts the noggin don’t it? lol…

  • LakeShow

    Did you watch the game?
Let me answer that for you: No.

  • LakeShow

Why can’t you just hate Kobe man!!!??

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I just sit in front of the tv like “the f*ck?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

What does Nash have to do with any of this? I’m talking strictly about Kobe. The man has to do a better job of creating good looks for his teammates (especially the bigs), in part making it easier for him to score.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Haha. A lot of opinions on Kobe are formulated based on select games or the “unsexy” stories. Kobe has terrible aspects to his personality and game, but the “good” side of either do not generate the amount of traffic and discussions that his “bad sides” do so they are rarely, if ever, discussed on sports blogs and sites like SLAM.

This is why I make it a point to address some of the inconsistencies and generic blanket statements that people like to throw out when it comes to Kobe (“why doesn’t Dwight just get the ball and score 50!?!?!!”)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i believe, the whole, LeBron’s effect on his whole team is the thing that separates him from Kobe to a lot of people.

  • The Philosopher

    I think you’re right.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

just because Parker won finals MVP doesn’t mean he was the man. especially in a blowout series where really, there was no “MVP’ – it was Gregg Popovich vs Mike Brown.
    .
LeBron James without a Jumpshot, vs a Team with 3 championships in the last 8 years.
    .
The finals MVP was just a formality that they threw at Parker because he was allowed to torch Daniel Gibson for 4 games.

  • Dagger

Wait, so he’s the ultimate artificial argument of SLAM?

  • LakeShow

Uhh… Steve Nash the PG… You know the guy on the team that handles the ball and does the play making. He may have something to do with ball distribution to the bigs right?…

You didn’t watch last nights game that much is obvious already.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

And I agree with that. They have different identities. I know personally I would hate playing with a guy like Kobe when his team is not winning games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Did you watch the other games of the series or just game 7?

  • LakeShow

    Correct.
Or is that too confusing for you?
A person is not actually a “straw man”.
An argument presented by one, is what that euphemism is used for.

Now to call one a straw man would be indicative, that they are the type that provides the euphemism practically, from which the name derives from.

    Can you follow that?

I can break it down better for you to understand if you like.

  • LakeShow

    lol.
    Your doing God’s work man.
