Kobe Bryant Wants Teammates to Get Him Better Looks

Following two straight games of stellar defense on Kyrie Irving and Brandon Jennings, Kobe Bryant struggled last night against Dwyane Wade on both ends of the floor. Following the loss to the Miami Heat, Bryant said he needs his teammates to step up offensively and help free him up. Per ESPN: “Not only did Bryant’s man on defense, Dwyane Wade, score 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting, but Bryant’s offense also struggled, as he scored just 22 points on 8-for-25 shooting (32 percent). Bryant, who leads the league in scoring at 29.7 points per game, said that alleviating some pressure on him on offense will in turn allow him to apply more pressure on defense. ‘If (guarding the opposing team’s offensive threat) is going to be something that I’m going to have to do for a while, I’m going to need my teammates’ help to free up offensively,’ Bryant said. ‘Like we did in the fourth quarter — create some picks for me, create some easy shots. That’s going to be tough for me to guard the top guy and come down the other end and have to go one-on-one every play. So, I’m going to need some help.’ He brought up the issue several times during his postgame remarks to the media. ‘I need some help offensively to save energy and not have to isolate and do things like that,’ Bryant said. ‘I’m going to need some picks. I’m going to need to catch-and-shoot like I did in the fourth quarter a little bit to make my job a little easier. I think the first three quarters of me just standing around the perimeter, the defense is praying for that. We have to do some things to free me up and get me in open spaces, this way I can be more active on the defensive end of the floor.’ Bryant started the game with just nine points on 3-for-16 shooting through the first three quarters before getting things going in the fourth, putting up 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting in the final frame thanks in part to getting open looks from the 3-point line off a screen set by Pau Gasol as well as a handoff assist from Gasol. ‘We talked about it going into the fourth quarter. I said, ‘Coach D man, goddamn. Come on, man. Come on, man. I can’t be standing out here like this all night long now,’ Bryant said, recalling a conversation with Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. ‘We did a much better job of that. My teammates know. We got to pick each other up. I’m going to go out there and do what I got to do defensively, and then on the offensive end of the floor we’ll pick each other up.’ Point guard Steve Nash, the man responsible for orchestrating the show on offense, agreed that the Lakers can make it easier on his fellow 17-year veteran teammate. [...] Howard suggested that the contributions of Wade, whom Bryant was assigned to keep in check, had a bigger impact on the outcome than LeBron James’ 39 points on 17-for-25 shooting on offense.”

Why are these types of particular excuses OK to make for Duncan, but not for Kobe?

  • RayJr

Well according to Lorne thats the definition of being the man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no, according to Lorne, Shaq was the best player on 3 of 5 of Kobe’s title teams. Which is 100% true.
    .
and Duncan was the best player on all 4 of his. Which is 100% true.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

who used those excuses for Kobe? — Shaq was clearly a better player than Kobe. Not even close between them.
    .
Kobe gets credit as the man on both the other title teams. Even if Pau was the better player in the 2010 finals (he was), Kobe was still “the man” on that team.

  • RayJr

Then Duncan would’ve been finals MVP on all 4 of em so that’s 75% true.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what don’t you get about finals MVP not making you the best player on your team?
    .
Yes, Parker was the finals MVP, but he was NOT the best player on the team.
    .
Willis Reed got finals MVP in ’73. —- Walt Frazier was so obviously the best player on that team, him not getting the award was a joke. — everyone who actually knows about the team knows Walt Frazier was the man.
    .
    It’s the same thing.

  • RayJr

Exactly. Because Shaq won 3 of those finals MVPs that doesn’t make Kobe just a contributing role player. Kobe was just as dominate against guards as Shaq was against anyone guarding him in all of those Championships. It was either Shaq was dominating from down low or Kobe was killing any guard trying to play D. Shaq got those MVPs because his numbers were incredible but Kobe was just as much an MVP for those Lakers teams.

some people don’t want to hear certain things

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

gah, it makes me so mad. you see Lake in the Post:Up saying Durant is clearly a better offensive player than LeBron? it’s got me all types of annoyed and frustrated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

That goes for Magic Johnson in 1980 as well. He had the best Game 6 (while KAJ was injured), but KAJ was the reason they were 1 game away from winning the series.

I haven’t seen the post, but I’m curious, why is that such an outlandish claim to you?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Why is it outlandish to say Duramt is clearly a better overall offensive player than LeBron? .
Well, there more to offense then shooting free throws better. Mainly

  • Dagger

Calling someone a straw man in no way suggests that they frequently use straw man (aka misrepresented) arguments. It suggests that you don’t know how to use the term. Which is cool, but since you use the term “straw man” so often I figured I’d point that out. No big deal.

Kobe’s usage rate (32.6), Nash’s usage rate (15.2), so based on those numbers the ball is in Kobe’s hands twice as much as in Nash’s hands. So what’s your excuse for that? Kobe in fact is the de-facto Laker’s PG due to ball being in his possession so much. You kobe fans can not have it both ways. Whenever someone compares Kobe’s and Lebron’s playmaking, y’all are quick to point out that there isn’t much of a gap between both cats with regards to playmaking but as soon as someone criticizes Kobe’s lack of playmaking, y’all are quick to make the “oh, he’s a SG not a PG” excuse. The man had a usage rate of 34.2% last night yet all he could muster up was 1 assist against a team that lacked a true big to combat the Laker’s size advantage.

  • Lorne

    This.

  • bleu

I was thinking the same thing, but arguing with him can be like arguing with a brick wall so I kept it moving.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000166716900 Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Yeah i feel like Kobe aims to “inspire” his teammates via. Media, huddle, and locker room rants, or by his on court heroics. Lebron however inspires his team by just getting them in the game . Making every player feel like they matter to some degree in the games outcome

  • sbc

You have to actually get the ball inside before your teammates can help you get easy looks. That didn’t happen much in the 4th last night.

  • LakeShow

    Are their minutes the same?

  • LakeShow

BTW…. You didn’t watch the game so I don’t want to hear, “KB could only muster up 1 assist BS.”

You gotta watch games to know what happens man.

  • speedy

Like I said….I can’t watch any NBA games this year.
Still pick and roll every time… they got the material and need to work that out.
Kenyon Martin comes to my mind when I think about an athletic but offensively less skilled player that scored through pick and roll .

  • LakeShow

Haha, then how did you know what I was talking about?

You knew that me referring to him as the ultimate strawman meant “so he’s the ultimate “artificial argument” of SLAM”, but you couldn’t muster up enough more brain usage to figure out the implication of him being the ultimate straw man, would mean he is the ultimate person who makes straw man arguments??

    That’s on you boyo.

I have seen you post, and you seem intelligent, so i’m surprised you couldn’t figure out the implications here.

Why don’t you pull up another time I used the term incorrectly?

You can’t because I never have.

Seeing as how I figured you would have seen me use the phrase before, always correctly, I figured you would be able to add 1 + 1 to find the equal being 2.

Try and use some deductive reasoning next time.
It will bode well for you.

  • LakeShow

    Oh yeah?
Brick Wall’s happen to make great arguing objects as a matter of fact!

I just so happen to argue with brick walls all the time and……… lol….
    Just playing, agreed, i’m a mule sometimes…

  • shutup

    AMEN!!!!!!!

  • Kato Williams

    I agree.

Durant is a pure shooter. He is one of the most efficient scorers the L has seen for a long time. He has insane length and range.

LeBron is unstoppable when he penetrates but lets face it, his perimeter shooting isn’t stellar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

Come on now. You know better than to use the “you didn’t watch the game” line on me. How in the world am I going to miss a Kobe vs LeBron/Heat vs LA matchup?

  • LakeShow

I can tell you didn’t. You would realize (unless your biased as F*ck) that KB was trying attempt after attempt to get the ball inside.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

There is a difference between” attempting to get the ball inside” and creating good looks for your teammates, huge difference.

  • Yesse

I think Kobe should get better looks for his teammates.

  • The Seed

Lets be honest, Steve Nash is a bad fit for the Lakers. Last night on the break, stop alot of Kobe looks and you could see Kobe getting frustrated with Nash not getting him the ball on the wing. Kobe does need the ball better in his spots. Nash is not getting the Lakers the shots they need.

  • Caboose

    And marry Eva.

  • Caboose

Every stat disagrees with you saying his perimeter shooting isn’t stellar.

  • Desam

just before I saw the receipt for $6467, I have faith that…my… cousin had been really bringing in money parttime on their laptop.. there neighbour had bean doing this for only about nine months and a short time ago took care of the morgage on there cottage and bought themselves a Subaru Impreza. we looked here, Big44.comONLY

I am not sure if you watched the game but with the way miami was putting D on DH12 was RIDICULOUS to a point where all the TNT crew were convinced they’ll repeat playing D like this. There was just no way DH12 was getting enough touches down low last night. Kudos to heat’s D more so than calling Black Mamba a #SelfishBastard

  • w

duncan wasn’t the best player 4 times

parker was the best in 2007…if u don’t like it too bad but its true

kobe was the best for 2 and duncan was the best for 3

    *Kobe slurper*

  • shucksta

Often his teammates give him the ball on tough situations with the shot-clock running down. He was forced to take some bad shots because of that. But I agree too, his shot selections were pretty bad and for some reason he kept jump-passing instead of taking the wide open J. I think that made him lose his rhythm

  • Bored

no. Pau, Bynum and Odom together were the reason they won. but Kobe was better than each of them individually.

  • LukeSkyWalkerTexasRanger

You called nbk a straw man today in the post up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

not at all lol. I rarely defend the dude, but i think some of the flack he’s catching right now is nonsense. He was asked specifically about 1 on 1, he didnt bring it up outta the blue.

  • Bored

i was kidding. you said the same to me and it was just as relevant.

  • http://twitter.com/AjpDos Allen Powell

Kobe put those numbers up one year. That is it.

  • RedRum

Coach Pringles and Samba… I have your solution. Here it is. You take Gasol. Post him up. Pass him the ball. He scores. And repeat…

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

oh i know where u were heading with it, lol

  • Jay

Kobe is theMost selfish player in nba history. Stop hogging ball kobe, pass the ball so ur team can win…all he care about his stats..

  • Jay

Kobe should retire, he will always go down as Most overated selfish ball Hogg in nba history, if u don’t belive me then google nd see… Not even top 20 nba greatest… How can u not win the team lakers have now, if kobe is benched
They will win.. I hate selfish ppl

kobe will never be and has never been as dominate against guards as shaq has been against centers

he is definitely getting some unwarranted criticism this season.
