Lakers Executives Jim and Jeanie Buss Reportedly Stopped Speaking

Forget on-the-court dysfunction. According to the OC Register, there’s even more drama for the Los Angeles Lakers in the front office. Team owner Jerry Buss’ children, Jim and Jeanie, are no longer on speaking terms, which has major implications for the future of the franchise. This all stems from the disastrous hiring of Mike D’Antoni over Phil Jackson: “As much as Lakers fans wish it could be true, Jerry Buss isn’t going to live forever. He has been hospitalized in the recent past, hasn’t attended a Lakers game in 1½ seasons, and for the only time since he bought the team in 1979 didn’t bring his proud smile to the Lakers’ group team photo last April. Buss, whose 79th birthday is Sunday, has been the greatest owner in sports history, and the prospect of losing leadership that great is daunting for any organization in any field. In Buss’ case, the plan is to hand the Lakers down to his six children – already having daughter Jeanie in place to run the business side and son Jim the basketball side. Well … Jeanie and Jim aren’t speaking to each other. They haven’t since Mike Brown was fired as Lakers coach in early November and the Lakers went through that unseemly, confusing, hurtful dance with Phil Jackson – the love of Jeanie’s life and now her fiancé – before hiring Mike D’Antoni. Whenever the sad day comes when the team has to be handed down to the Buss children, things promise to get even uglier. [...] In the same way, it’s possible the Buss children can come together as a family after their father is gone and work together for years, decades or lifetimes in the way that the patriarch hoped. Jim and Jeanie have gotten along OK at times in the past. It’s just looking extremely unlikely, which is why there are already rumblings about very rich men gearing up to bid and outside investors putting together ownership groups with the idea that the discord within the family will lead the children to sell what Jerry Buss holds: 66 percent ownership of the Lakers.”

lakers are all kinds of f*cked up

  • Initbruv

I think I speak for everyone (well, most people) when I say that I hope that they can mend their relationship, and that the Lakers keep on sucking.

I will never understand why Jeanie never got a shot at running the basketball side of things. She seems much sharper and in tune with the fan base/team that Jimmy ever has.

The more you hear about Jimmy Buss, the worse he sounds. In his quest to “craft his own identity”, he took a perfectly championship worthy core and have brought them down to the debacle we see before us today.

    jim is an idiot

  • charliewinning

    Amen, brother. Amen

  • roscoe

someone should hold the writer who wrote this article accountable…

name names, bc creating divisions in any family is unacceptable according to roscoe.

it is fairly arrogant imo and bad journalism. it’s reality tv in print.

if jeanie or jimmy’s “words” or “quotes” were used i’d say have at, but this article belongs in the toilet at a truck stop in Baker next to the thermometer when it is 125′.

Its Kevin Ding. He’s pretty damn reliable and a reputable journalist, I doubt he’d just say this to stir sh*t up.

The Magic may have a worse record, but man, I am SO GLAD to have this drama pushed out of Orlando and right to Staples Center.

  • ChosenOne

On another note…I’d totally f*ck Jeanie while she’s wearing a Laker Jersey.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

jeanie and phil should out right buy the team and give coaching duties to bshaw!

  • LakeShow

They were owners of the Orlando Magic also?

  • Caboose

I thought so…haha no, but I mean there were A LOT of stupid fluff pieces about the Magic last year. Dwight leaves, the drama leaves. And so do the wins, but that’s beside the point.

  • roscoe

i don’t care who he is or what his reputation is…

roscoe finds it unacceptable to cause division amongst a family and on top of that this guy is making a living off it.

like i said, it belongs in a toilet.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

I don’t see how they could be talking with how Jim seems to feel about Phil.

  • juice

I highly doubt a writer can cause division within any family unless division is already present. It’s silly to assume that a family can suddenly be torn apart by a so-called false report about details of a relationship only they could know.

So… this big steaming pile of a season is a complete top to bottom team thing. Let’s bring in the Love Guru…. Or Tony Robbins or somethin’

Looks like we miss the Zen

    Get on him Roscoe!

WHERE THE BUCK STOPS! The problem with the Lakers is at the top. Jerry Buss is about to turn 79 and in failing health. Early on in his regime he hired Jerry West to oversee operations. It was a great hire. West didn’t make many mistakes and trained an excellent protege in Mitch Kupchek. Unfortunately Jim Buss was thrown into the mix. Why?
I believe the answer is that his aging father is a creature of an earlier generation, one that believes that having a son is more important the having a daughter. He comes from a male oriented world and couldn’t imagine his daughter being the right choice to take over the Lakers. This ignores the fact that she has been a consistently capable exective over the years and is far smarter than her brother. Additionally she is engaged to marry the greatest coach in basketball history.
Blinded by emotional prejudices, the father made the wrong choice and he has gotten Mike Brown and now Mike D’Antoni as a result. Neither of these choices suits the team personnel or knows anything about what it takes to win a championship. All this because the father was unable to make the rational decision instead of the emotional choice. Now the aging personnel tries to fit into a sytem that does not suit them and one of the greatest basketball minds sits idly by with injured feeling, because he didn’t get along well with the son and would probably have wanted his office back.

it’s naive to believe for one moment he is not tearing at the fabric of the buss family juice & according to my standards the writer is a scab.

i am not promoting writers, but i don’t think ppl like walter cronkite or charlie rose would ever entertain this toilet rubbish.

i choose to believe living to a higher standard than a tabloid is best.

  • D_B

Right. Cronkite and Rose went around naming sources to inflate their credibility…that’s how a journalist builds decades of credibility among his information outlets…I agree with your view regarding journalistic standards, I think you need to take a nuanced look at this case, at this journalist, and at the fact that these sources are probably very close to the Buss family and to out them would be to ruin their careers. Ding is a boss. We’re not talking about Skip Bayless here. As a Laker fan who’s followed every Laker beat writer for a decade and a half, you build a sense of who’s real or not. Ding is. Great argument, wrong situation.

If the rift is false, why would any outsider have any influence over their relationship? Maybe it’s an upbringing thing, but no complete stranger could influence me to feel a way about any of my sibs simply by spreading lies. It’s not realistic. Nobody can know what goes on within a family better than the family itself. A random writer having false ‘inside’ knowledge doesn’t have the influence to ruin the relationship of immediate family members.

  • wtfff

why the hell are u speaking in third person

  • alex80

    Because Roscoe likes Jimmy

  • pposse

okay so who should be in charge of bball operations jeanie or jim?

  • Initbruv

    Atta boy

  • robb

Nobody should talk to Jim. Ever.

  • Qudamah Olushagun

poor little rich kids Jim and Jeanie buss can’t hold on to or control what their daddy left them. The LA Lakers will never again be the team people want to see win. There is nothing for them but down hill.

  • Caboose

Still better owners than the Maloofs.

  • Caboose

Did you read the full article and not just the excerpt on SLAM? Cause honestly, you’re WAY off base here.

  • The Mauve Avenger

    To each his own..

The problem here is that Jeannie ALWAYS had the brains along with the looks. She’s always been the smart one in the family, and everyone in the Lakers’ organization knows it. But Jerry chose Jimmy to run the team–and it’s the single worst decision Dr. Jerry has made regarding the Lakers.
