Los Angeles Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak ‘Disappointed’ By the Team

In a meeting with season ticket holders, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak was candid when addressing the struggling team’s many, many issues. Kupchak didn’t mince words when it came to the failures of the Lakers so far, while leaving room for a glimmer of hope going into the second half of the season. Per the LA Times: “Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak told a group of about 1,000 season-ticket holders at Staples Center that he was ‘disappointed’ with the team’s performance this season. ‘If you have a bunch of cylinders, we’re not running on all cylinders right now,’ he said during a Q&A session Sunday morning, before the Lakers fell to 15-18 with a 112-105 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night. The major question for the organization seems to be the integration of Pau Gasol with Dwight Howard, under the guidance of Coach Mike D’Antoni. ‘I think Pau continues to struggle to figure out how he’s going to play with his group,’ Kupchak said. ‘Our coaches are struggling as well. We’re not going to succeed as a team until we figure that out.’ Kupchak also noted the Lakers’ need to improve defensively. ‘The players that we have on this team are certainly capable of playing lock-down defense,’ he said. ‘Everybody has to look at the defense … just like the offensive side of the ball. Most guys really, really want to score. In order to be a good defensive team, everybody has to really, really want to play defense and defend.’ Kupchak said a Lakers roster with an average age of 28.5 was not too old. ‘I don’t think age is a factor, no. That’s an excuse,’ he said. ‘I don’t think that’s a factor at all when you look at our team. Young teams don’t win championships. You have to have a good mix of experience and some legs in this business … I don’t think for a second this team is too old to win a championship.’ Kupchak also said Kobe Bryant, who is averaging an NBA-leading 30.5 points and whose 48.3% shooting from the field would be a career best over a full season, has improved with age.”

U want your team to play lock-on defense? then why did you hired D’Antoni? @_@

I think that was a Jim Buss decision more so than Kupchak. this team needs a change and fast. they are getting outplayed by teams they clearly can beat. Dwight is right there is no chemistry on this team. Pau needs to be traded, he doesnt fit this system.

Mitch pretty much has to position himself so that someone else takes the fall … he’s knows what’s at stake. When Rent-A-Center refuses to re-sign with L.A. it will have been the biggest front office blunder since Pat Williams (76′ers GM) traded away Brad Daugherty (1st pick in the draft) for (i) a bag of chips and (ii) “a player to be named later.” The 76′ers would have had a frontline of Barkley, Moses and Daugherty.

you do realize Andrew Bynum hasn’t played a minute this year right? i mean, they still won the trade considering….
    .
Went to edit it, noticed….yep, Andrew Bynum, still out indefinitely.
    .
    Comment stands.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange is going to give you a moment to edit your comment.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    moment’s over.

  • Redd

    LOL you 2 are hilarious.

  • http://twitter.com/NaijaAdditude Mr. E

hmmm never saw it like that , I dont think Dwight is jumping ship, there will be a trade before All-Star break or bringing in some vets.

  • shockexchange

Your statement is not true. ‏Bynum injured himself bowling and the only reason he went bowling was because he was depressed over having been traded.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    does that change reality?
    .
he may have hurt his knee celebrating if he didn’t get traded.
    .
all we know is, he hasn’t played a minute. and won’t, anytime soon.

  • shockexchange

He’ll play more minutes for the 76′ers than Rent-A-Center plays for the Lakers. Put in your diary nbk.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it was actually Dr. Jerry Buss’ decision.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you really could be right. i wouldn’t be surprised if i am completely wrong about that situation. I had thought Kobe was mature enough to try and work through whatever issues arose while Dwight worked his way back into shape and the team learned the new system.
    .
but they look to have already given up, and are aiming at each other. — So, you really could be right, at this point, unlike a couple months ago, i wouldn’t be surprised.

I disagree there is chemistry is just we need to start focusing on defense.

  • stunna

Disappointment by the Team??? Be disappointed that you did choose D`antoni OVER THA MAN Phil AKA “11 championships” Jackson…

  • simon

time for a trade mitch you can see it the players dont have chemistry bring in other players who want to play and win with young legs let go to down to Minnesota and pull the plug for two young stud. or lets look in to toronto and bring in bargani and jose we will get a starting stretch 4 to get howard room in the paint and a decent back up point guard in jose

Some people are hilarious when they use the “system” as an excuse for why a player, or players, are playing badly.
The average age of that team is 28.5? NOW, they want to act like they cannot play basketball?
    AFTER they’ve made some money?
    Hilarious.

isn’t Bynum a free agent at the end of this year as well? Renting Dwight Howard for one season is still infinitely better than not having Bynum for the entire season.

this is mitch’s fault for listening to jimmy. he should have listened to jeanie..kb has been great. d’antoni’s system is not conducive with the team. we have no athletes sans kobe. i say best bet is have pau come off the bench so he is not butting heads with d12 but what do i know…bad situation and i am pissed!

Los Angeles Lakers Fans Very ‘Disappointed’ by Mitch Kupchak.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yes

  • Yesse

I don’t know if people agree with me, but i think Lakers should have hired Phil Jackson instead of D’Antoni. Lakers are failing on many things right now. Defense and chemistry are one of them and i think Phil Jackson would have been the right guy to solve that.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s the Lakers. everyone has to act like this is the Coach’s fault, if that coach isn’t Phil Jackson. —- you know, because this team has been so great in their time with 2 polar opposite coaches.
    .
and we should all ignore that Phil Jackson said 2 weeks ago that he wouldn’t want to coach this team anyway, and they aren’t true contenders.
    .
But this is all D’Antoni’s fault.

the saga between nbk and shockexchange continues…

  • The Philosopher

    Understood.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that was my very long way of saying, “i agree” lol

  • bike

Seems like DH is getting the lion’s share of the blame. He’s second in the league in rebounding and a top 5 shot blocker plus recovering from back surgery. What more do they want out of the guy–superman?
    Oh, wait….

  • The Philosopher

    Lol.

  • Marty Susman

If Mitch wants ot be sad about the team he first needs to be sad about assembling a team of old folks with large ego’s & small old legs as well as a coach that does not fit the team… Then Mitch needs to be sad about giving away every decent draft pick he has ever had & then be sad about not having a player to take Kobe’s place in 2015 & so on….Bottom line here it is not the teams fault, it is the fault of the office guys who put it together…. This team needs to blow the hell up & start again with an eye on no more Kobe in 2015….

  • Marty Susman

This team has to trade Nash, trade Peace, trade Pau, trade Blake, trade Clark, trade Duhan, trade Beasely, trade Jamison, in fact trade everyone other then maybe Hill & since they are stuck with Kobe at his $65,000,000 due for the next two years start to build a team for 2014 & 15

  • MikeC.

Certainly not an age issue. Knicks are proving that old dudes can play. Maybe the chemistry is off in LA because nobody has enough accolades.

You should be disappointed. You bet on the wrong horse.

  • Dutch Rich

Lakers would probably need 2 solid 10+ game strings to get to a 6 seed.
Nash’s offense is starting to show glimpses and Dwight is picking up slack on D. You could tell he was feeling good blocking that shot last night until that ball landed in Gallo’s hands. Doh!!
D’Antoni really has to lengthen his rotation because the last thing he wants is injury to his starters. Furthermore his bench is starting to lose interest. Try starting Jamison and Meeks over Pau and Metta. Play Kobe at small forward and have Pau anchor that second unit. He can’t stand being on the floor same time as the Mamba anyway. Here’s the bad news. Their schedule is about to get really tough.
If they don’t make the play-offs it would be the most epic failure in franchise history. Time to try things a little differently right now.

  • Comment_System

    schrodingers knee

  • Comment_System

I am probably the odd man out, but I don’t think this team would have been any much better with Phil taking over either. I just have that feeling.

  • bike

Agree. This team’s lack of success up to this point is the result of a complex series of factors acting simultaneously beyond anyone’s control.

  • Home_Grown

    looool

  • Caboose

Mitch did a pretty good job of putting Nash, Kobe, Gasol, and Howard together…

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

maybe too many stars add up together do not get good results. just look back at shaq, kobe, gary payton and malone during that year… they went home empty handed. just maybe…

  • http://www.facebook.com/natgeo02 Neitel Agosto

Let Kobe be the Coach/Player…why not? It was done before…

  • Josh

Its not hard! Dwight is a 5 and Pau is a 4 – run a horns based offence? Screening Dwight inside and Pau popping / ball screening?

  • LAKER NATION

PLEASE FIRE COACH D*ANTONI, please look at the facts and realize that this coach is hurting the lakers. and i stilol believe coach Phil Jackson would the the best choice for the type of roster that thwe lakers have
