Mario Chalmers Still Thinks He’s a Top-10 NBA Point Guard

What Mario Chalmers may lack in statistical output and basketball performance, he more than makes up for it in self-confidence. The Miami Heat point guard continues to insist that he’s among the very best floor generals in the NBA. Per Fox Sports: “I’d say top 10,’ the Miami Heat fifth-year man said of where he ranks. ‘I’m not in the lower part (of the top 10), I’m in the middle part. I just have confidence in myself. I think I can compete with the best of them.’ All of this is coming from a guy averaging 7.7 points and 3.4 assists. But Chalmers doesn’t care how many snickers are heard about where he believes he ranks among point guards. ‘That’s how I feel no matter what people say or what people think,’ Chalmers said. When asked if he could be the most confident player in the NBA who hasn’t made an All-Star Game, Chalmers agreed. If there any doubts about his bravado, just read his arms. ‘He’s got ‘Mister Clutch’ tattooed on him, so he’s one confident guy,’ Heat forward LeBron James said. ‘He’s always been a confident guy, and that’s why we love him.’ [...] ‘I’ve always had a chip on my shoulder for being from Alaska,’ Chalmers said. ‘A lot of people said I wouldn’t make it. A lot of people said I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing now, and that has kept me going.’ [...] At Kansas, Chalmers’ stats also weren’t that impressive, although he is second in school history in steals. Chalmers averaged a pedestrian 12.2 points and 3.8 assists, including highs of 12.8 and 4.3 as a junior before he bolted to the NBA. But look who will be having his jersey retired at Kansas during halftime of the Feb. 16 game against Texas. Chalmers will have his No. 15 raised to the rafters at Allen Fieldhouse, even it might not be a popular decision. In a poll conducted by the Topeka Capital-Journal, 71 percent of respondents believed Chalmers’ overall Jayhawks career does not warrant his jersey being retired. The other 29 percent believed his miracle shot makes him worthy. ‘Hey, my jersey is going up there,’ Chalmers said while shrugging off results of the poll. ‘So no matter what people think, I’m up there.’”

Top 10??? It’s good to have confidence, but I see he’s still getting high!

  • Max

The middle part of the top 10, So he’s saying he’s somewhere between the 4th and 7th best pg..
    LOL

  • Caboose

Paul, Westbrook, Parker, Rondo, Kyrie, Chalmers, Holiday, Curry, Deron. I see no complaints, right?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kumar.ram.73113 Kumar Ram

    1 paul, 2, westbrooke, 3. rose, 4, curry 5 kyle 6, william 7.miller 8. conley 9. holiday 10. rubio

  • Anthony Dixon

    bottom half of top 30!

  • Da-Meat-Hook

He’s due for a harsh reality check come contract time.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what’s funny is that Obama asked if the Heat needed another shooter, and Dwyane Wade exclaimed, “we need a point guard” ——— this happened yesterday.

  • Caboose

    ….Andre Miller #7?

  • Dutch Rich

Whas just about to type that. He got crapped on at the WH.

  • Tbow21

Not even a top 20 PG, barely a starting PG in this league. There are point guards coming off the bench who are better; Jack, Calderon/Lowry, Kidd, Bledsoe, Andre Miller. Not to mention all-star caliber guards Paul, Williams, Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, Parker, Curry, Holiday, Lawson, Nash, Lillard, Jennings, Irving… and a slew of other very good point guards: Vasquez (14 and 9, my bid for MIP), Mo Williams, B Knight, Kemba Walker, Lin, Dragic, Conley, Felton, Hill, Collison, Jameer Nelson, Teague, Rubio, etc etc.

Must have been high when he said this.

  • Initbruv

    Lol @ the opening sentence

  • Initbruv

Ugh, didn’t know he tattooed “Mr. Clutch” on his body. I hope he was drunk and in Tijuana when that happened, otherwise he’s just a douchebag.

Westbrook over Rose??……….and you forgot Tony Parker and Rondo…..

  • HowHeDoDat

If you go strictly by stats only. (Pts, rebs, stls, assts) Chalmers is ranked in the 20s.

  • Justin

Mario isn’t even the best point guard in the state of Florida.

  • thetruth

    Nash?

  • Caboose

    Westbrook over Rose, absolutely.

  • Caboose

He’s not top 10 this season.

  • thetruth

    Rose?

  • Caboose

    Not playing this year…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

He has the nerve to say this right after a 0pt/2assts/3TOs game vs a rondo-less Boston.

  • Kev

mario isn’t even the 10th best point guard on the heat squad

  • TheUnspokenTruth

I love watching the local Miami Heat promos on League Pass, where the announcer says “get your tickets now to see all the Heat stars: James, Wade, Bosh, Ray Allen… and the rest!” Must eat away at ‘Rio, knowing he’ll ALWAYS be in this group.

  • spit hot fiyah

    maybe he meant reggie miller

  • The Philosopher

I was often told that, dreaming out loud is good for one’s soul.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

you are out of your mind! They have nearly identical statistics except Rose is more efficient. How can you say Russ is better? If he didn’t have KD on his team he would probably be shooting sub 40%

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    brad miller

  • Caboose

Seeing as Rose isn’t playing this year…

  • Biz

    westbrook over parker? yeah sure

  • Caboose

It’s VERY close. On a different day, I’d put Parker above Russ.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    oh he’ll be back

  • Sérgio

But he is still lightyears ahead of Chalmers.

  • TBRK

so did Rondo a few years back….they really have similar stories, hope Mario has a similar drive

  • Caboose

Did you really not see how my comment was sarcastic?

  • Toner83

But Obama made the dig at Rondo… Chalmers got crapped on BY HIS OWN TEAMMATE

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Obviously he can’t get much stat wise playing with Bron, Wade, Bosh and Ray.O would take him over Kidd and Miller at this point.

  • Armando

Right now these are the 32(!) point guards I’d take over Chalmers (and I’d probably consider Isaiah Thomas, Mo Williams, Jeff Teague, Aaron Brooks and DJ Augustin as well (more or less in order):

Paul, Westbrook, Rondo, Parker, Curry, Irving, Holiday, Williams, D., Lillard, Jennings, Wall, Walker, Nash, Conley, Vasquez, Lowry, Jack, Lawson, Rubio, Felton, Calderon, Hill, Knight, Kidd, Nelson, Bledsoe, Dragic, Lin, Collison, Stuckey, Hinrich, Ridnour…

  • Armando

OK, I might not take an injured Rondo over him, but it’s close… hell, I would, Rose as well. Squeeze him in there between Westbrook and Rondo

  • robb

    I still think he’s crazy

  • i_ball

Kidd is a huge part of what is happening in NY this season and a better shooter. Andre Miller wouldn’t fit the Heat but is still way better than Chalmers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Nah, he’s not. Rio is fresh off dropping 10 three pointers a few games ago. Dude was the highest ranked pick and roll defender in the entire L last season.

  • kc

funny thing is that chalmers doesn’t even run the point. He bring the ball up to half court and sends it straight to lebron. Bron has always been a point guard.

  • Fat Lever

The only way he would be ahead of pg’s with the names of Paul, Williams, Nash, Westbrook, Holiday, Rondo, etc is if their first names were Cliff, Billy Dee, Rick, Brian, Billie, and Kia; respectively.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    ZING!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

looks like spalding hyped him up!

  • Dutch Rich

and Obama who said he couldn’t repeat his new nickname.

  • Dutch Rich

yeah and a set of 2xl mitts would be helpful too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

this is a rubbish list lol

  • This guy is a joke…

  • i_ball

the pick and roll is a two man game. The Heat play small so and they can defend it better.
One game doesn’t mean he is a great shooter. Melo tied Tony Douglas for the NY record just the other day…. Tony Douglas…

  • http://www.facebook.com/aamir.khuller Aamir Khuller

Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo (b4 ACL), Kyrie Irving, Jrue Holiday, Steph Curry, Brandon Jennings, Kemba Walker, John Wall, there, Mario. 10 PGs better than you.

  • big roy

    delete comment

  • big roy

I’d take Barea and Bradley over him too.

  • KBM

I heard it was the biggest promo budget in their company’s history. $1200.

  • Datkid

not at the same level though. by the time he becomes who he was, IF he comes back fully healthy westbrook will have improved a LOT

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

Why can’t he come back at the same level? Jamal Crawford tore his acl and claims that his knee was stronger after he came back. Corey Brewer tore his and is the same player. Baron Davis and Kyle Lowry both tore their acls in college in you would have no idea. Derrick Rose is a freak. You just know he is in the gym bustin’ his arse to become better than he was before the injury. I’m not saying he is gonna come back the same. All I’m saying is don’t assume he won’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

wait were you being serious slipping chalmers in there? pleasee say no…

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    lol your joking right?

  • Mr.Wang

Chalmers is an idiot…..listen to this, BIG MO will tell u whos a better pg…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8jHQoppXJM

  • Datkid

and all I’m saying is don’t assume he will. If ACL injuries weren’t serious and everyone came back fine from them nobody would care…but that’s just not how things work. Westbrook has made impressive strides and rose won’t be himself for a while assuming again that he comes back explosive. RW will STILL be hard to catch. plus He was arguably just as good or better before rose’s injury

  • shutup

Where is Tony Parker? Oh, I see you forgot to add the prequel 0.Parker

  • shutup

Yes Parker is a better pg then Westbrook. I agree, but Caboose is a fair judge, it is a close call. Personally I prefer Parker’s control of the game over Westbrook scoring outbursts.

  • shutup

Any list without Parker in the top 5 is wrong……

  • http://twitter.com/vannshy vannshy

it’s crazy to see how many people sleep on Tony Parker, he is in the top3 PG discussion at the moment

  • Santino

    You high son?

  • pposse

RW was not ‘arguably just as good or better’ pre-Rose injury. That’s just false.

  • Max

    ??

  • Max

No, he was not better before the injury.

  • Datkid

oh please. rose hasnt shone us anything Westbrook hasn’t.

  • Datkid

it’s just not. dont let that mvp award blind you

  • Max

Yes he has, being able to drag a team to the no 1 seed as the first option.

  • Datkid

Westbrook could do the same if you gave him a very good coach and a team chock full of world class defenders.

  • Max

I’ll give you that Westbrook is close to a healthy DRose, but Drose is just a little bit better at controlling the game. Thats the difference.

  • s2k

    looks like they forgot already…smh

  • kpaul7

You have got to be a RW homer…From an unbiased standpoint if you watch them play Rose is a much better leader and team orchestrator. If you are comparing statistics they are similar however you must realize that the Thunder rank 8th in the league in pace while the Bulls are consistently in the bottom 5-10 in terms of pace. The means that RW’s stats are more inflated due to more possessions. It’s simple really, more possessions = more points, rebounds, and assists. Also you have the fact that KD gives WB about 5 easy assists per game. I actually do like WB alot but I think saying he is potentially better than Rose is just blasphemous. There is a reason why people (including Thunder fans) hold their breath when in comes to WB. It seems like Bulls fans have 100% trust and confidence in their PG.

  • Datkid

Except Westbrook’s a better defender, and far less injury prone at this point. plus right now westbrook’s just fine controlling the game.

  • Max

If that’s what you say brah.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aamir.khuller Aamir Khuller

That list isn’t in order of who i think are the top 10 PGs…i was just naming 10 players who i think are better than Mario Chalmers. My top 6 (No Rondo) would be: CP3, Russ, Parker, Kyrie, Jrue Holiday, Steph Curry (the last 3 in no order)

  • Datkid

you’re such a rose homer. the comment you replied to was about how they’ll do in the future, so about half of what you’re saying is irrelevant. rose WILL in all likelihood need time to fully recover to his former self, if he does. Meanwhile Iron Man russell westbrook has been gaining more experience and skills by the day. Next time they play against one another Westbrook will destroy him. and let’s not act like D.rose is anything more than a mediocre distributor. you literally typed that comment as if the guy was chris paul… and secondly when both teams play head to head, they have nearly identical stat lines. plus westbrook plays better defense. Rose is not as far ahead of him as you think…. and by the time he plays against him again… he REALLY won’t be.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

disagree… delusion look up the DAJJAL
