Memphis Grizzlies Reportedly Talking to Five Teams About Rudy Gay

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

If the rumors are to be believed, the Rudy Gay Trade Sweepstakes have shifted into overdrive.

It’s basically an accepted fact at this point that the Memphis Grizzlies are openly shopping their star forward, and they’re currently talking to a handful of teams around the NBA about the possibility.

From Hoopsworld and ESPN:

The Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics are among the teams that have had conversations with the Grizzlies about Gay, according to league sources. The Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors have shown interest in Gay in the past and could be potential trade partners as well. Gay is owed $17.8 million and $19.3 million over the next two seasons and Memphis wants to avoid paying the luxury tax, which is why they’re looking at deals that would allow them to cut costs.

The Raptors might not be able to swing a deal for him. But they’d love to. Sources said this week that the Raptors — who tried to make a play for Gay before the 2012 NBA draft — remain seriously “interested” in the Grizzlies’ leading scorer and are trying to assemble trade packages to bring the 26-year-old to Toronto after preliminary talks with Memphis. Among the trade chips that the Raptors are believed to be dangling, in addition to draft considerations, are veteran point guard Jose Calderon (who has an expiring contract worth $10.6 million) and young big man Ed Davis. [...] The Raptors, meanwhile, tried to trade for Gay six months ago, offering up various packages headlined by the No. 8 pick in the draft (eventually used on Terrence Ross) and Calderon. The Grizzlies, still owned by Michael Heisley at the time, passed.

The new front-office in Memphis clearly wants to shake things up and cut costs, but they are being cautious about possibly moving the Grizzlies’ leading scorer.

As for Rudy Gay himself, he says that he’s not bothered by the trade chatter at all. Per the Commercial Appeal:

“This is every year,” Gay said. “If it happens it happens. So what. I’m playing today as a Grizzly. It’s a business. People are going to talk and stuff will happen. It doesn’t make me any less of a player. What people say about me doesn’t change how I approach the game or how good I think I am or how good other people think I am. So it doesn’t bother me at all.”

It remains to be seen if he’ll continue to sound so indifferent as the February 21 trade deadline draws closer.

they also supposedly looking to trade Zach Randolph.. smh! ill be mad pissed off if they trade at least one of them two.. i really like current Grizzlies and i already was disappointed when they let Mayo go – at least that was kinda understandable, but trading Rudy or Zach right now would retarded.. basically i learn again to not like small market teams, cause unless they are Spurs, they will greed for every penny

  • Redd

I’m rooting for the Grizzlies to go all the way in the West & the Gatlinburg, TN area is my favorite place outside of Chicago but..if the Grizzlies are thinking of attracting a top tier FA they really aren’t a top destination.

he needs to come run with Rondo.. itl be crazy

Not good for our cover :(

  • Redd

Time to replace a guy it seems.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they are not looking to trade Zach Randolph. They just aren’t opposed to it. i don’t know where everyone is getting that Memphis is actively looking to trade Z-Bo, that is just not true.

  • T-Money

“It doesn’t make me any less of a player.” …it kinda does, actually. LOL

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

lol that was the first thing I thought as well.

  • theDankerNuggets

it’s just such a shame that this team won’t get to stay together to see how far they can go. I think they still have room to improve with Gay developing his game and learning how to score more efficiently.

  • Dymez

Well, I take it that Memphis doesn’t care that they have a really good chance of winning a championship this season with the squad they have. With that said, Rudy Gay to the Rockets would be the most exciting move to me. Harden and Rudy on the wings would be crazy!

If I were the Clippers, I might consider doing a deal for Rudy. I’d offer Caron Butler and Lamar Odom for Rudy Gay and Tony Allen. That way, the Grizz can still be a competitive team, and knock about $11 or 12 million off the books at season’s end. The Clippers will be better, Lob City will be even “Lobbier,” everybody’s happy.

  • spit hot fiyah

so sad that a very entertaining team that also has a legit shot at making a Deep playoff run is trying to break up their team due to luxury tax implications

  • BEN10

    HAHAHA HOPE U GET FIRED

  • spit hot fiyah

clippers would come out like bank robbers in that trade

  • Max

Nooooooh, only the Kings and Warriors have pieces.

    Do your thing Caboose.

  • Max

    lol

  • Max

No way they are gonna do that.

  • Max

Oh and the lockout helped the small market teams sooo much!

  • Dymez

Not really. It’s not even, but when you take things in its proper perspective, it is. Grizzlies want to alleviate themselves from that tax — you do that, you’re not going to get equal talent back, that’s just common sense. To be able to acquire someone like Caron Butler to fill in for Rudy Gay for half the price, and to pick up an expiring contract that will relieve you of about $12 Million of your $16 Million, that’s not bad at all.

Remember, Memphis made a historical playoff push 2 seasons ago, without Rudy Gay. That’s the main reason why he’s expendable right now. Some feel like Z-Bo isn’t really getting off like he did 2 years ago because of the chemistry, or lack thereof, with Rudy in the line-up. If what they believe is true, Caron would be the perfect fill-in; talent and salary wise. Hence, everybody’s happy.

  • LakeShow

I’m incredibly surprised to hear the Lakers are not in the talks. Gay would be a blessed addition to D’Antoni’s offense, and Memphis may be willing to take Pau Gasol for the Gasol/Gasol frontcourt.

  • underdog

The good old SLAM cover jinx.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

Phoenix Fans on Suns blogs are asking themselves how much better is gay than Dudley anyways? is it worth it? lulz

  • mhm

if rudy go to the rockets that would be a ridiculous team…………… j- hard n gay be like t-mac n vince

  • mhm

true tho i am an avid clippers fan

  • mhm

what’s not good for the cover?

that would be good if Gay wasn’t having the worst year of his career

  • Anthony Dixon

i wish they could swap joe johnson for rudy gay

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

hopefully it is the lakers. would love to see gay in purple and gold so kb can play the 2 and not the 3. he is already playing way too many minutes!!!

    Boston pleaseee

I haven’t watched the Grizz much this year but aren’t they #2 or #3 in the West? Why mess with the lineup and team chemistry? Is Gay regressing that much? If you’re going to cut costs, do it in the summer, not in the middle of the season.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

    hard and gay…. chuckles*

  • DanDee

    Maaaan, not Z-Bo

  • RKJ92

    lolololololol!!!

  • snoop

dont think this is gonna happen. Clippers cant afford a big contract like this if they want to resign Chris Paul… but it would be incredible if it happens

  • Dymez

Of course it’s not going to happen. I said this is what I would offer. LAC is content with what they have, they’re balling. They don’t want to shake up the chemistry, but when it comes to re-signing Paul, that wouldn’t be an issue; LA has his Bird Rights, and with the new Don, spending money now, after he’s been cheating this city for this long, that luxury tax wouldn’t be a problem either. Especially if the team wins.

    lmao

  • ty

i just saw someone post “i am an avid clippers fan” … 3 years ago you wouldnt of been an “avid” clippers fan.

  • Dagger

Gay came into the league and averaged 10 PPG. He averaged 20 PPG the next season and it looked like he was going to blow up. Every year since then I’ve thought he might move to that next level, but every year since his numbers have been more of the same: almost 20 PPG, mid-40′s FG%. But his obvious talent, involvement with team USA and the improvement of his team blinded some people to his stagnation.

This year his stats have fallen off the cliff. Given their talent, the Grizz might be favourites in the West if Gay played like the star his talent says he should be. That said, I don’t think Memphis should trade him unless they find the perfect package. They may be tempted to move Gay and Randolph, get the really underrated Ed Davis and some financial flexibility with Calderon’s expiring contract, then see where that takes them. I just don’t know how often a team in a small, unattractive market really finds itself with a legit 5% (I’d say) chance to win a title.

I say keep the core together, hope Gay’s start to the season is a blip, and go from there. The grass is always greener on the other side of a deal, but for a small market team it rarely is.

  • SirGrey

Stupid, stupid. Small markets nowadays are just looking to be playoff contenders. That team that made a good push in the playoffs without Gay had OJ, Sam Young and Greivis Vasquez playing real big. I don’t have too much hope in Wayne Ellington, Quincy Pondexter during playoffs, and they already have enough bigs to get burn in Speights and Arthur.

  • theDankerNuggets

He is but that’s because he really doesn’t know how to maximize his abilities. I’m just saying I’d like to see this core stay together for a couple more years because besides Randolph they all have room to grow and improve and maybe they could get to that next level. As a fan that’s what I want to see so it sucks to see them break it up for financial reasons.

  • theDankerNuggets

they took a chance and put an underrated and small market group on their cover (and we all saw how well Memphis started the season, at the time their play warranted a cover from somebody). I respect them way more for taking that chance and showing some love to a group that rarely gets any in the national media, instead of playing it safe and putting Lebron or Kobe on again.

  • RunNGun

The other team I read that was rumored to be in talks with Memphis was Minnesota but with Love out until March… even if traded, no Gay Love on the court.

  • http://www.facebook.com/simon.chiu.10 Simon Chiu

Bargnani + someone for Gay. Do it now!! Ross DeRozan and Gay will form an exciting backcourt. I don’t know why they wanna ship Z-Bo too but his toughness would help the Raps too!

  • http://www.facebook.com/myselfunderkarma Fredd.

Worst, is a lil strong don’t you think, i guess it’s more about people losing their patience about him

  • Lan

I thought the SLAM covers lost its Jinx Effect. Not so by the looks of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

    Interesting

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

Totally. Mid season trades don’t bode well for the team. Look at Boston and the Perkins/Green trade. IMO the C’s coulda made the finals that year!

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

F****n A. Clipps are my team, and Gay would make them unstoppable!

  • JL

who knows, the trades you don’t hear about are usually the ones that happen.

  • JL

unless your name is clipper darryl

  • neaorin

The Grizz aren’t going to take Pau Gasol on unless they’re also moving Zach Randolph.

  • Death Kid

    the F*ck they’re thinking?

  • candlewood jay

    Look at the Pau-Kwame trade.

  • candlewood jay

    how?

  • Jer dawg

Lakers should trade for him, but he barely plays defense, either. Rudy for Ron Artest, Jodie Meeks, and Jamison. Haha. Bad trades and good deals have been made by both these squads before.

  • Hugo Silva

Anything and anybody will help the raptors lol

  • mhm

these grizzlies remind of the denver nugget team when carmelo was on it k-mart

  • mhm

how does the moderator of the comments get the blame for cover of the magazine just so happening to be kinda bad timing considering this current news??

  • zogs19994

    TOO FUNNY

  • jake

The raptors need to stop with this bullshit man. How about instead of fucking yourself over long term. you stay out of this talk and keep developing the young core you have. In which you could become pretty decent. Depending on were they land in the draft it could become that much better this time around.

  • jake

Man, aren’t you just a dick. As usually you don’t know anything about the raps. A lot could mess them up. they have an awesome young core if they would just keep them together. Although knowing our unpredictable GM. You never know if that will be the case.
