New Orleans Hornets Announce Name Change to Pelicans (PHOTO)

As expected, the New Orleans Hornets officially unveiled their new branding today. Above is the logo that they’ll splash across their uniforms and merchandising staring next season. Per the Times-Picayune: “The NBA’s Board of Governors already has approved the name change. And the Pelicans’ team colors will be blue, red and gold. ‘This isn’t something that was just done overnight,’ team owner Tom Benson said. ‘This is a long process. We are not just changing the name to change the name. The Hornets name came from Charlotte. That fits in with Charlotte. It doesn’t fit into New Orleans, La., or our area here. The Hornets don’t mean anything here. We needed something that symbolizes New Orleans and Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. And nothing does that better than this name.’ Hornet officials said the name change was made after scouring more than 100 possible names in a search for the perfect fit. They settled on the Pelicans because it’s the state bird and because the team officials said Pelicans represent some of their biggest community efforts. They also said the brown pelican, which was once on the endangered species list but has battled its way off, symbolizes the Gulf Coast region, which has fought its way back after Hurricane Katrina endangered this region. Ben Hales, the Hornets’ vice president of marketing, said the team’s cornerstone community platforms will focus on two initiatives that are critical to the Gulf South region: children’s health and sustainability of the coastal wetlands. Hornets officials also said the pelican is one of the most visible symbols in the state, as it’s on license plates, the state flag and the state seal. The Pelicans also were a minor league baseball team in New Orleans from 1887 to 1959 and again in 1977.”

I actually like this name, and the logo is kinda cool – it’s got a slightly “death from above” vibe. If they can’t change it to the Jazz, then this is good.

  • Tupack Shackur

Well now they freakin look like the hawks, in colour scheme and everything. Only thing I like is the typeface, but the pelican treatment is forgettable.

  • Redd

So are they now a part-time biker gang?

  • The Philosopher

The worst nickname in the history of the entire NBA.
    In my estimation.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    i can agree with this

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

a lot better then i expected

  • http://www.facebook.com/endo2206 Corey Endicott

That “red” is definitely looking a little too pink for an NBA team.

they should really stress the NEW ORLEANS and make the Pelicans kind of a side note. They did that in this logo. Sports teams do it everywhere except the U.S.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this is a D-League name and logo.

  • Comment_System

They should have went with The Brass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DanielUpYours Daniel Powers

i thought this was a prank. pelicans? seriously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXw6znXPfy4

  • Max

And so the nickname for Eric Gordon was born: “The Pelican”

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

its right there with the charlotte bobcats

  • z

    That logo is pink.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

its a lot better then the previous bobcat logo

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Which also belongs on a D-League team (and kind of is).

  • roscoe

as someone who appreciates wildlife, nature in general, and understands the importance of the wetlands to the ecosystem… i dig the name and what their marketing team is doing.

And someone who appreciates malls, materialism, and money a little too much won’t get it.

who designed the logo? it looks cool.

  • roscoe

nothing is worse than the tunder… booooooooooooom.

  • AlbertBarr

    oooo…that would have been good.

  • AlbertBarr

It does have a very new orleans vibe to it…still not a big fan of the name. The bird actually looks scary.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

look up the history of Pelicans and New Orleans man.

  • http://twitter.com/chlodovech James L

I’m going to have to side with Tony Montana on this and he thinks the pelican’s a fly mascot choice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSaAfkZpuNc I hope Jordan gets rid of the Bobcats next.

  • z

Are you west indian or do you just hate the letter ‘h’?

  • shutup

Or a WNBA team name or a IHL team, would be better suited for it.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    hahaha yup!

  • Initbruv

I keep feeling like we’re going to get an announcement from the team saying, “alright, obviously we aren’t really naming our team this, we were just f**king with everyone. The real name is…..”

  • LakeShow

I thought this was a joke.
    Like the Onion news…
    Damn… That sucks guys.
    Thunder > Pelicans

  • bike

Logo looks fierce but let’s face it; pelicans are not known for being a fierce bird. They are
ungainly, fish-eating birds. Should have just gone w/ NO crawdads; at least they have claws.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

exactly. whatever an IHL team is.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

    Indoor Handball League (duh)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I’m saying they should emphasize New Orleans…make people proud to rep the city that they hail from…city pride..like Man U or Man City or Liverpool or Milan or basically any soccer club outside of the U.S. lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

I don’t really know why people hate on the Thunder…It’s an intimidating name, and although the colors might be pretty generic, the scheme works, and the uniforms are great

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that would assume passionate americans. which would be a bad assumption.

  • Hingle Mccringleberry

Dat bird dont look too dope now. It be lookin gawd awful dumb ya know.

  • RKJ92

Thunder is fine.. a f*cking pelican though? are you kidding me? lol.. that has to be the most STUPID mascot I’ve ever seen in proffessional sports.. if I was an nba player I’d be embarrassed to play for the franchise..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

What if because of this team, 10-20 years from now general opinions of pelicans change and they are viewed as super BA lol

  • RKJ92

    LOL!!!

  • RKJ92

Haha! pretty funny for a ferret :)

  • LakeShow

I wasn’t hot on it at first, but it grew on me… Unlike this name, in which I do not expect the same.

  • Max

    *Space ferret please.
    Mister Raptor.

  • Max

    They deliver babies!

  • roscoe

do you have something to say about west indians?

  • roscoe

i’m embarrassed to post comments where raptors’ fans do.

  • RKJ92

    Grow up?

  • Initbruv

I also love nature. But I don’t think it makes the animals in the Gulf Coast feel better to know that while their ecosystem was ruined by s**** human failure, at least their memory will live on through mascots (sort of like Native Americans).

  • Initbruv

    Also it’s a stupid name.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

The colors aren’t bad. The logo isn’t bad. The nickname is still horrible.

  • RKJ92

I shall call you ferret armstrong! The first boldest to leave his cage ;)

  • roscoe

you’ll rethink Pelicans after watching this mr. animal planet.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNNl_uWmQXE

  • Initbruv

    Lol! Ok you win.

  • shutup

How is a Pelican worse than a franchise that reps Barney?

  • shutup

International Hockey League a lot like the CBA is to the NBA before the D-League

  • shutup

    LMFAO

  • KBM

Bye Anthony Davis, Bye Eric Gordon. They have seriously underestimated how detrimental this will be. Nobody who has any sort of choice will want to be ‘Pelican’. FA’s will have New orleans at the very bottom of their list.

  • cedi

that’s a one pretty logo. love it

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh haha my Grandpa played in that league (if that’s what it was called) for like a year or two in the 50s

  • Shmomo

Lakers and Celtics are worse basketball names

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Henry Abbot (who I normally hate reading) had a great piece on Truehoop re: why they chose “Pelicans” – essentially, it symbolizes a lot of stuff within their community.

Honestly, I remember people complaining when OKC chose “Thunder”, and now it sounds pretty damn good and fitting.

Also, their logo is pretty bada**.

  • MUBWAR

exactly my first taught. loool hell angels type of sh*t

  • The Mauve Avenger

This is the name of a AAU team of rich kids from northern California.

  • The Mauve Avenger

If Miami U can be the Hurricanes so can New Orleans. Make it happen.

  • SuperAr82

LOL that is one dirty pelican, but I kinda like it!

  • z

Relax. My folks are Trini. You have to admit, we all neglect the letter h.

  • jim

i actually like the change and the colours seem to match the city more .

  • Booom!

Is this an early April fools?

  • pposse

this reminds me of the cleveland cavs logo

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i actually called the director of US handball a couple years ago and tried to get him to start a league in AZ lol

  • RKJ92

You mad because I hurt your integratey and made you look stupid in the Rubio thread? awwww :)

  • shutup

What the hell is “integratey”? You only make yourself look even stupider. lmfao INTEGRATEY….what you do try to sound it out to use a word to make you feel smart????
