Post Up: Temperature Rising

The Heat send the Lakers back to the drawing board.

by Peter Walsh / @goinginsquad

Knicks 102 (25-13), Pistons 87 (14-25)

Across the pond, the Knicks and Pistons squared off in London for the NBA’s third regular season game ever in Europe. Carmelo Anthony must’ve been having flashbacks to the Summer Olympics because he was was lights out from the field once again in London’s O2 Arena. Melo and the Knicks got off to a hot start, going on a 16-0 run and ending the first quarter in the lead for just the second time in thirteen games. New York continued to hold the Pistons at bay in the second and led by 15 at the half. Detroit climbed back in the third quarter by going on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to four, but the Knicks responded with an 8-0 run to put them back up by double-digits heading into the final frame. In the fourth, Will Bynum (22 points) scored seven straight points to cut the lead to eight but it proved to be too little, too late as the Knicks pulled away for the fifteen-point victory. Melo finished with 26 points which marks 25 straight games where he has scored at least 20 points. Iman Shumpert made his return from a torn ACL and finished with 8 points and a steal in just under 15 minutes. J.R. Smith and STAT came off the bench to score 16 and 17, respectively.

Clippers 90 (31-9), Timberwolves 77 (16-20)

The Timberwolves played hard and were within striking distance for much of the contest but the Clippers had too much firepower for the undermanned Wolves. Minnesota lost their fifth straight and possibly Alexey Shved and Nikola Pekovic, who both left the game with injury in the second half. Jamal Crawford dropped 22, Blake Griffin scored 20 and Lamar Odom grabbed 12 boards and dropped 6 dimes in the win. The Wolves only trailed by five heading into the fourth but the Clippers depth (LA’s bench outscored Minny’s 45-23) was just too much for them to handle as LA pushed the lead to 13 with five minutes left to cruise to the victory. Luke Ridnour led the Wolves with 21 points and 5 assists.

Bucks 98 (20-18), Suns 94 (13-28)

Last night’s victory marked the first time that the Bucks defeated the Suns in Phoenix in 26 years. 26! Thirteen of the 30 players on the two rosters hadn’t even been born yet! Anyway, the Bucks reeled off a late 10-0 run that was capped by a Mike Dunleavy three with under a minute to go to give the Bucks the lead for good. Monta Ellis dropped 24 and dropped 6 dimes, Brandon Jennings scored 16 and Larry Sanders finished with 19 points, 15 boards and 2 blocks. Shannon Brown led the Suns with 20 points off the bench.

Heat 99 (26-12), Lakers 90 (17-22)

Think LeBron wanted this one? The best player on Earth put together a helluva performance with 39 points put on a show in Hollywood last night, taking a bow with 39 points, 8 dimes, 7 boards, 3 steals, 1 block and locked up Kobe during crunch time. The Heat set the tone early, exploiting LA’s terrible fast break defense by running the floor and dunking the ball four straight times. The Lakers kept fighting, though and rallied late to take the lead behind 13 fourth quarter points from Kobe. The Lakers threatened but Jesus Shuttlesworth made sure that the Heat would walk away the victors by scoring seven of his nine points over the last five minutes. Allen hit a beautiful floater in the lane which was followed up by a LeBron fadeaway that sealed the deal for the Heat and sent the Lakers searching for answers. Dwyane Wade had a big game with 27 points and 5 assists. Kobe finished with 22 on 8-25 shooting.

Really? That’s what I get for not checking…

  • Caboose

    Explain DPOY.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the Blazers are in the playoffs. And no, Aldridge has been better. Although it’s been close, http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=aldrila01&y1=2013&p2=couside01&y2=2013

  • Caboose

    Huh. I underestimated Aldridge.

  • Dagger

You do realize that Jordan only once shot 3.3 or more threes a game, right? And that was in ’96/’97. I guess he hurt his team’s spacing for the rest of his career. I guess he wasn’t the shooter Durant is (probably true), which means he wasn’t as good as a scorer (ridiculous).

Oh, and Larry Bird (!) only once reached 3.3 three point attempts/game. The idea that Lebron doesn’t shoot is just silly right now.

  • ChosenOne

Lake, you can state the fact about KD shooting an insane 50-40-90. He’s only 6th player in history to do it. But, LeBron’s defense is still way ahead of KD’s. LeBron plays with maximum efficiency and certainty every game on both ends.

  • Caboose

DPOY HAS to be Timmy. Dude has a 94 Defensive Rating along with almost 3 blocks and a steal a game.

  • Max

Wow, well I would love to see that happen.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    - It’s defense so it’s hard to explain with stats as those commonly aren’t accepted, so i’ll just start by saying, Gasol is the anchor. He protects the rim & guards the other teams best post player. Every single night. Randolph literally gets to focus on offense and rebounding. So right off the bat, Gasol has a direct effect on the teams offense, with everything he does defensively. Now to the numbers,

    - The Grizzlies are 2nd in Defensive Rating.

    - Marc Gasol is holding his opponent to a PER of 13.0

    - Team best Defensive Rating of 99

    - Team lead in D-Win Shares at 2.5

    - (comparison between him and Tyson Chandler) http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=gasolma01&y1=2013&p2=chandty01&y2=2013

    - With Marc Gasol off the floor, their defense goes from 2nd best in the league, to 7th or 8th.

  • Max

OKC has a better record than the Heat right now, this is who will win the MVP will come down to at the end of the season imo.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ahh, yes, Tim Duncan should be the frontrunner. I retract what i say, and say Gasol is the frontrunner for 2nd lol

  • Caboose

Oh I agree that Marc is awesome, but Duncan is better defensively this year. Thoughts?

  • LakeShow

How many 3′s does he shoot? 3.3 a game.
    Durant shoots 4.5
Some teams don’t want all their guys trying to do dunks and layups all game. It ruins their spacing…
So that’s kind of a dumb statement that if you “dunk more your better at basketball.”
    All hail Blake Griffin! GOAT.

  • Caboose

    Haha ok, well said.

  • LakeShow

Exactly, and the MVP has an argument as the best player in the world in some way or another. I will argue for KD.

  • LakeShow

    Shhh. I’m saving that!

  • ChosenOne

KD’s 50-40-90 should never be overlooked at all. But I do agree with you on LeBron being greater now. The king’s D is exceedingly at a higher level. KD beats LeBron in the FT department, but that is not a factor in having the better of a player over 38 games this season.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

How many assists does Durant get a game?

    .

“some teams don’t want all their guys trying to do dunks and layups all game, it ruins their spacing” — well, considering the Heat as a team are only shooting .005% less then the Thunder from 3, i don’t think that’s an issue. Call me crazy.

    .

the dumb thing, is to argue Durant is the better offensive player. Using shooting as the only thing you have to back up your argument in a season where he literally isn’t shooting any better — LeBron does have a better effective field goal % —- which is the overall shooting % of all field goal attempts is ignorant. in the least.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, i realize Durant is shooting a better FT%. But that’s it. the 50-40 is cool and all, 55-40, is better.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Duncan is definitely better. i can’t reiterate that oversight enough.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s not true tho. he threatens to make jumpers just as consistently as Durant this season.
    .
which is a fact. it’s not speculating or an opinion. the cool thing about stats is they tell you which players hit jumpers more consistently then other’s, literally. you can’t just ignore a fact because you don’t like it.

  • LakeShow

    No that would be false.

Let’s see those nifty stats dood.

Show me the numbers from your ‘numbers sites’.

Durant hits more jumpers, more often.

He shoots more at a higher %.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    everybody does. EVERYBODY

  • LakeShow

They have made it so he doesn’t t hurt the floors spacing which is wise, he is one of the two best players on the planet. You should accustom your offense to the best players needs. He needs to drive to the basket, so they have Bosh shoot 3′s and deep jumpers instead of stay in the post where he would normally be.

Same with Jordan. No post threat, thus no need for him to space all the time.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    http://www.hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Kevin%20Durant

  • LakeShow

    Tyson Chandler

  • LakeShow

Oh you must not watch the Lakers play then… cause he did exactly that the two games previous to this one.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    WHAT.

    .

Does Tyson Chandler shoot 3 threes a game?

    .

Does Tyson Chandler shoot MORE shots than Kevin Durant from 16-23 feet a game at a HIGHER %?
    .
Save me with the irrelevant bullsh*t. you want to argue that Durant is better? maybe have something, anything, to back up your unfounded opinion that actually relates to this conversation.

  • LakeShow

Okay so Durant is 20% better at 10-15 footers while taking 1 more a game.

LeBron is 1% better at 16-23 footers while taking 1 more a game.

Durant is 2% eFG% better at 3 pointers while shooting 1 more a game.

At the rim LeBron is 1.2% better while getting to the rim 1.5 more times a game.

So I conclude that Durant is the better more efficient shooter….

But your right, Bron is way closer than I had assumed.

  • LakeShow

    50-40-90

All while taking more jumpers, and scoring more.

  • LakeShow

    cool and all…. LAMO….

    Better FT%? Try 17% better….

    53-40-90 > 55-40-73

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

0.8 more jumpers. — 0.8! – stop acting like your point is relevant about who shoots more jumpers. And even if it was a big enough difference to matter, considering LeBron is actually more efficient in terms of shooting the ball in a live game, you would still be wrong. As layups are much higher and better shots then jumpers. — and they do shoot the same amount of shots a game.
    .
What you are basically arguing, is that Kobe Bryant was a better offensive player then Shaq, because he shot more jumpers.
    .
    Which is stupid.

    .

    LeBron is shooting 55-40.

    .

    And getting more assists.

    .

    And getting more rebounds.

    .

And turning the ball over less

    .

  • LakeShow

    Feel free to disrespect.
Durant>>Offense (If your team has a PG)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    7.0-2.8 > 4.2-3.2
    .
there is more to offense then shooting.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

add that in with the rest of playing offense. and LeBron is clearly the better offensive player. bye.

  • LakeShow

LeBron is better when he doesn’t assist as much.
So those assists numbers don’t mean anything.
Their like Rondo assists. Nice looking on paper, but unnecessary for game play.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………….

The Heat’s PF and Centers(? Are their center’s on the Heat?) don’t rebound so he naturally gobbles up more rebounds. If Durant was on the Heat he would rebound more too. But he has rebounders on his team, so the rebounds don’t mean anything. It’s like .5 difference any who.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

You can’t get layups and dunks all the time in crucial games (the playoffs) like you do throughout the RS, so it is much more beneficial to have a guy who’s offensive repertoire is more rounded in those situations. And who’s FT’s are 17% better so if they get fouled your nearly guaranteed 2 points as opposed to uncertainty.
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    HELLO!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    LeBron has always rebounded more.

    .

LeBron rebounds more because he spends more time around the rim on offense. And is the more versatile offensive player, so he can do that.

    .

“So those assists numbers don’t mean anything.
Their like Rondo assists. Nice looking on paper, but unnecessary for game play.” – that is the stupidest thing you have ever said.
    .
Let’s ignore that LeBron is maybe the best playmaker in the league, because you have no real way to argue against it.
    .
LeBron’s playmaking abilities are so outrageously important. How you can have an argument with me and just ignore obvious sh*t, is disappointing.
    .
Do i need to show you game film from the finals to prove how important LeBron’s passing is? did you watch the finals?
    .
i am seriously disappointed in you for this argument. saying that is a pathetic attempt at justifying your opinion.
    .
i don’t care if you disagree with me, or don’t want to accept stuff. But don’t come in and say something that outrageous. There is a ring on one of the people’s fingers we are talking about. — and before that ring was their, the inability to win, was your only argument against said player. —- but now that he has it, you are deeming, quite possibly the most important part of his offensive game as irrelevant? really? gtfoh with that.

  • LakeShow

“Best play maker in the L.”

Gottam your a fool for your boy sometimes. WTF kind of statement is that.

He’s a great play maker, but he’s better when he is thinking about scoring more.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………

5.6 assists in the playoffs last year.

    Best he’s ever played.

He doesn’t need to get assists for his team to win.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

so you think playmaking is only about assists?
    .
getting a dunk on your own isn’t making a play?
creating your own basket isn’t making a play?
collapsing a defense so the ball rotates to an open shooter isn’t making a play?
    .
    sure buddy.

  • LakeShow

Those are all entailed with play making buddy, yes buddy, indeed buddy boy, yes.

    Buddy.

    Boy.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………

“He doesn’t need to get assists for his team to win.”

    Did you see that?

    I wrote that!

Does that look like it says “he shouldn’t make plays” ??

    Does it?
    F*ckin straw man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well, since you know that in such a douchebaggy way, you saying this seems pretty f*cking purposefully stupid now then doesn’t it? “He’s a great play maker, but he’s better when he is thinking about scoring more.”

    .

    f*ckin aunt sally

  • LakeShow

So when your thinking about scoring more, you can’t make plays?

A wise (ass) man once said:

“getting a dunk on your own isn’t making a play?
creating your own basket isn’t making a play?”

Sounds like that certain play maker you were speaking of was thinking about scoring. . . .

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

so you don’t know what the words you type mean?
    .
do i have to explain what “he’s a great play maker BUT” means? really? you typed the words.
    .
“Kobe Bryant is a great scorer, but he’s better when he looks to do layups” – is basically what you typed.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

Few things I gathered from last night:
    1. LeBron James….f*ck.
    2. Melo loves playing in London.
    3. The Clippers are the deepest team I’ve seen in years.
    4. Is there any argument that Crawford shouldn’t be 6th man?
    5. Nash is noticing grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

  • LakeShow

If JR Smith starts shooting the ball closer to his career averages, he has a say in the 6th man debate, but other than that, Crawford has been far and away the best 6th man.

Agree with everything else you wrote too.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

    Ahh forgot about J Swish.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

He was guarding Kyrie and Brandon Jennings. My, the standards have changed. Granted, Kyrie is nice, but he’s not fully formed yet. And Brandon Jennings struggles to shoot 40 percent every game.
Kobe is already talking about his shots. Y’all are wild.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

People who think Bron has an equal right now are funny. Durant is easily second best, but he’s also clearly second best.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Didn’t you know you get extra hidden bonus points for the degree of difficulty on the shots you take. It’s called the Kobe rule. It’s why him not passing to Shaq more made sense.

  • Slick Ric

Saying Durant isnt close to Lebron is complete BS….especially now that he has improved his play making ability.
