Royce White Thinks He Might Never Play in the NBA

The Royce White Saga continues in Houston, where the rookie forward now says that it’s quite likely he will never suit up for the Rockets (or any other NBA team, for that matter.) Per the Houston Chronicle (via Sirius/XM Radio): “With no end to his impasse with the Rockets in sight, rookie Royce White said it is very likely that he never plays in the NBA, citing a lack of league-wide protocol for dealing with mental health issues including his anxiety disorder. ‘I think that the chances are very high,’ White said. ‘And I say that just like I said before the draft that the chances were very high that I didn’t even get drafted. Because business in America, as we all know, is about one thing and that’s convenience and efficiency. And oftentimes what the efficient thing to do is not the healthiest thing to do, right? That’s why we still sell cigarettes. It wouldn’t shock me if we couldn’t be logical and say a protocol is needed because it’ll be the hard thing to do. If that’s the case then so be it. I stand on what I say and I refuse to put myself in a hazardous situation to play a sport.’ White had previously charged the Rockets with giving inconsistent support and failing to adhere to doctors’ recommendations for his return to the team. But when asked about playing for another team, White said leaving the Rockets would not provide a solution. ‘I don’t see that going to another team would help anything because no matter what team I go to a protocol is still going to need to be put in place,’ White said. ‘It’s a league thing. The reality is that it is not Houston’s fault. As much as we always want to try and blame one side or the other and try and find the black and white in it, it’s not black and white. It’s gray. And they’ve been thrown into a position now where they’re forced to make things up as they go because a protocol has not been put in place for mental health up until this point. And that’s tough for anybody to do. If there were no safety or health codes on how to construct a building, the people who are going to try to build a building tomorrow are going to be in trouble. That’s just the reality here so I don’t really think going to another team is something that would be better. And it’s not something that I want to do. I want to play for Houston.’ White has been away from the team since Nov. 12. He worked out with basketball staff intern Derrick Alston last week, sessions that were considered a step toward returning to the team, a person with knowledge of the plan said. The next step was to be a stint with the Rockets NBA Development League affiliate, according to the person familiar with the plan. The Rockets assigned White to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Saturday. He released a statement the next day saying he would not report to the D-League team.”

  • ScrewT

  • The Philosopher

I wish this young man good luck, and good fortune.

Does he expect the NBA to bend over backwards for one person?

  • shockexchange

(Shawty Lo voice) “That Royce crazy girl, don’t say nuttin’ to ‘emmm!”

  • roscoe

from what i have read it seems he wants medical professionals to make all basketball related decisions for him. idk if that means HOU management and coaches can’t make decisions… it is hard to figure out.

i think he wants to play in europe, but idk if that is 100% true.

word from HOU is they are waiting to see it things work out and will not release him.

  • bike

Just ‘aint meant to be bud. All the luck in the world my man.

  • speedy

Sorry, but business in the NBA is about reliability and efficiency and that is what counts in every business.

I think he is a very smart guy, but he can’t handle this situation and teams can’t rely on him, but that’s what they need to.

So he is right he will not play in the NBA.

  • Max

How will he get to Europe is he can’t fly?

  • roscoe

he will catch a ride in your dingy? you tell me.

Coulda said something before they drafted u and you got ur guranteed contract.Sheeps become lions with that Guranteed $$, didnt say a think about it while they were interviewing you, most likely. Get your money without having to work a single day to earn it. He just pulled off the leagues biggest robbery lol

  • BigA

If he is so smart he should let the people understand him better, to me it seems like a bitch-move not to play d-leauge

  • Peter Walsh

Headline should read, “Royce White Will Never Play in the NBA”

  • TV63

REfused to report to the D-league. Even stoudemire had to play D league and he’s a proven veteran. SOunds like he has a little arrogance disorder he’s trying to mask as mental disorder. Rockets have bent over backwards for him and he as not even tried to meet them half way. There are other head cases in the NBA besides him and they know you can’t keep refusing and obstructing or you’re out.

  • idontknowwattoput8

All teams knew about his anxiety with flying before being drafted. I remember hearing about it when watching the draft.

  • coyboo

royce, try a 9-5 job lets see which one’s a healthier fit for you

  • KBM

Hey royce join the club. The Slamily frowns upon your ‘start’ with the rockets and will now, unfortunately, have to endure your provocative trolling comments delivered from behind a laptop. Ppl keep an eye out for Royce_NeverTriedNoFight_White on these boards.

  • coyboo

royce try a 9-5 first. maybe it’ll help make you put things in it’s proper perspective.

    He wasted his own opportunity.

The Rockets not only took a gamble on him and gave him a chance (when all other teams would have likely bailed), but they also accommodated his needs as best as they could. That’s time, money, and resources invested in a kid who has yet to make any contributions to their roster. But the Rockets are still doing it because they want to see him succeed.

Now, despite that, this kid has skipped practices, refuses to go to the D-League, constantly whines about how he’s misunderstood/overlooked on Twitter, and complains about playing time – all within 2 months of his rookie year. Mental illness or not – is that someone you want on your team?

Not one fan, media member, or any other personnel had anything negative to say about him initially – we were all supporting him, his cause, his career. But its hard to rally behind a guy who constantly rallies for martyrdom when a) he hasn’t done anything productive since he’s been drafted but yet constantly refuses to “pay his dues” as a rookie in the NBA, and b) his team has actually spent the time, money, and resources to develop him, when 99% of other rookies saying the stuff he’s said would have been released by now.

I agree that anxiety in this situation sucks, but rather than work with the Rockets, it seems Royce just wants to do it his way, and then complain when his way isn’t what the Rockets want because they have their own needs and opinions.

He needs to get it through his head that the Rockets could easily cut losses and stand to lose $1-3 million over an unproven rookie, and that his actions now are limiting his potential career earinings moving forward. You think a single team s going to give this guy a chance now? And it ain’t even because of his anxiety – its the attitude. He killed his own goodwill.

This guy is a clown. He had a chance to be a real inspiration to those who are suffering from anxiety and could have shown a great example of how hard work, diligence, and patience can make even the most difficult situations surmountable. Instead, he is someone that everyone has tuned out and nobody believes in.

  • Dutch Rich

Surely the kid loves basketball more than anything. Seems to me that he is taking on a much braver fight for those that might come after him. I commend him for that.
Pity for fans because he’s an enormous talent. He very well may not claim that he is mis-understood but that his illness and how to deal with it is misunderstood.
Keep up the good fight Royce.
    Bless

    Whats a dingy?

  • palo

he is welcome in my small european country, we ride buses to games all day

  • Luminous Music

Dingy – A small boat. Something the Black Pearl isn’t.

  • Max

Ah, I don’t have a dingy but I’m pretty sure Royce is afraid of that aswell if not more.

  • danpowers

is the media reporting that much about this guy to have the next cindarella story in case he returns to the nba?

    well said

If there’s one thing you can’t accuse Royce White of, it’s hiding his disorder.

You’ve just “outshocked” the Shock Exchange. Thanks for the assist Shawty.

  • Nope

    royce only does a 5-9

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

im not saying he was hiding his disorder, everyone knew. Im saying he shoulda said STRAIGHT UP, “look man, i aint flyin on no planes. You want me to play, you gotta make some other arrangements to get me around, cuz flying makes me anxious and its not good for me.” and watched his ass go undrafted, and not be on no team anytime soon. Like i said, he didnt bring any of that up, or make his expectations clear before signing that guaranteed contract.

dude needs to find no Job. He’ll go back to living how he used to live (probably better) and not have to work at all for it, he’s got millions in the bank. How long could you or me live off of a few million dollars? sounds like a pretty sweet deal right?

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

    “i dont have a dingy”

    Pause, son.

  • Mars

I dont want to speculate but Royce White situation sounds suspect. And we’re not talking about couple of dollars. Millions of bucks. Has he played a game yet? I think he trying to make an example of the league. I applaud his bravery, but it may screw someone elses chances later down the line.

  • Mars

    nice
