Sacramento Kings Will Reportedly be Sold to Ownership Group Looking to Move Team to Seattle

Bad news for Sacramento-based NBA fans, good news for Seattle-based NBA fans and former SuperSonic enthusiasts: the Maloofs are reportedly on the verge of selling the Kings to an ownership group looking to move the franchise further north. Via Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Kings fans were awesome when Bibby and Webber were there but Seattle needs a team. Cali has a bunch of teams anyway.

  • AlbertBarr

Jerry Alex…you just don’t get it. The city of Sacramento and the Fans of the Kings did everything they possibly could to keep this team in the city. we put our heart on the court and the Maloofs smashed it under their boot and the NBA was complicit. There is no business reason why the Kings had to be moved. This is a mockery of those of us who have supported our team from day one. And Seattle may be excited but the very thing they saw as an injustice when it happened to them is what they are doing now to get theirs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

SEATTLE, you can have a team again. Too bad you couldnt be given a better one, but its a step.

  • jt_DopeSole

They have to change the name back to the supersonics

  • Dymez

I knew this was coming. I was just waiting for the Maloofs to fold, and finally they did. They couldn’t avoid it. I’m just wondering how each organization will pull off its history now. Although the city of Seatlle maintains the rights to the “SuperSonics” name and they have joint custody of the organization’s history with OKC, where would that leave King’s history? It’ll be interesting to see what and how they do this.

  • http://twitter.com/chlodovech James L

I feel bad for the city of Sacramento. Got screwed by the owners. But to Jerry’s point: it’s still just an hour and 30 minute drive to the nearest NBA arena.

  • zogs19994

    WHAT STATE IS SAC-TOWN IN??

  • AndyK

It was cool being to see Webber’s jersey hanging from the rafters for a least a little while at least. Kings you will be missed.

  • LakeShow

Going, going, back, back, to Seattle

    :D

    Great news for Sonic’s fans!

Sorry to Kings fans… Not easy, I know…

  • AlbertBarr

    Today…a sad one.

  • Redd

And I feel for you, it must be difficult when SF & LA have a team but the thing is as great as Sac Town fans have been, Seattle was more better at building decent teams.

Sorry tho, must stink. It’s still not confirmed.

  • Redd

Sac Kings denied this tho, so I’m a bit confused.

  • Dan

There is nothing more painful then losing the team you grew up with! The memories of the players, the great times and the bad. Seattle’s 5 year nightmare is almost over but its almost as painful to take a team from the loyal Kings fans, it hurts so much to see another fan base go through what Sonics fans went through! If the Sonics are back, I’ll enjoy them but I won’t be like an Okie an gloat being a classless jerk. I’m truly sorry Sacramento at your loss! You don’t deserve to be treated this way. Unfortunately we all play by the same rules..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

losing that great great great great Sonics/Thunder team, and getting THIS back. at least it’s something i guess.

  • davidR

yo lakeshow, i was just in seattle last week for the first time, and that is one beautiful city. the area around key arena is cool

  • Roy Leczak

Its not Seattle that’s “doing” anything, the way it wasn’t OKC “doing” anything. Clay Bennett is a bastard for lying about his intentions from the onset and misleading the city of Seattle. This is all on the up and up and in the open.

  • LakeShow

Yeah, I was too. (Not for the first time of course)
    Where did you go?
I went to Pike place while I was visiting family for Christmas.
The Pacific Science Center was the area where you were hanging out it sounds like. The Space Needle as you know hovers above Key Arena so it was always a great venue from a strictly aesthetic point of view.

  • LakeShow

Believe me, Seattle ain’t complaining about the team.
They would take the Bobcat’s with open arms. The great thing is that the Kings current roster is stacked with talent… It’s about a few key trades and a mindset change and this team can compete with the rest of the West.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

How is this Seattle’s fault? The Maloofs could easily choose to not sell the team, but they want to. Blame the owners if anything, not sure why you’re trying to make it seem like the Seattle fans cheering for this is a bad thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

    Ontario.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Yeah, how does that work, now? Does Webber’s jersey gets transferred to Key Arena?

  • roscoe

i guess all the SAC trolls will have to put their cow bells back on their cows and become LAL fans, right?

  • https://twitter.com/Wayne__o BuenoWayno1

Nice to see the supersonics back but its a shame sac town is losing a team they invested so much passion n loyalty too…..guess the maloofs ran through most of their inheritance.

  • roscoe

what does SAC do w/ the retired jerseys?

SAC is now SEA, does SEA get back all the records OKC took as a franchise?

i foresee a little fiasco on the horizon.

  • GNett1983

daaaayuuum!!! i fckn live in germany & even i know that SAC-TOWN is in Cali!!! dayuuuuuuuum

  • roscoe

    get over it… you’re soft.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The Thunder will essentially become an expansion team. And the Sonics would then take theirs (agreed upon prior to sale of team to OKC), and the Kings previous accomplishments.

  • LakeShow

This summarizes where Seattle’s at in regards to NBA names and their history.

“When the Sonics left town in 2008, former Mayor Greg Nickels and city council president Richard Conlin signed a settlement agreement with the team’s new owner Clay Bennett that divvied up the team’s assets, and naming rights. This document essentially finalized the divorce, and, like many marriages that end bitterly, it wasn’t a clean split.

The championship banners and trophies stayed in Seattle at the Museum of History and Industry, while most of the equipment was shipped to Oklahoma City. (In addition to a basketball team, Bennett’s haul reportedly included 150 court side seats, 24 office chairs, three televisions, 200 CDs, a sound-effects machine, a basketball inflater, radios, headphones, and a replay monitor.) The Sonics name and history, however, received joint custody.

Technically, the rights to the name “Seattle SuperSonics” and their old logos belong solely to Bennett. But he promised not to use them in Oklahoma City, and agreed to turn them over to the new team’s owner (presumably Chris Hansen) at no cost, as long as it meets with NBA approval. Hansen is a diehard Sonics fan, so its likely he would ask permission to bring back the name. And, since David Stern already screwed the city once, it’s hard to imagine the commish saying no.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Don’t go being unrealistic about the new Seattle team just yeah bud. The Kings have some talent, some very very volatile talent.

  • RKJ92

DONT MAKE FUN OF MY PROVINCE YOU F*CKING MEXICAN

  • LakeShow

    Talent none the less.
Like I said, Roster moves+mindset change(maturing like OKC did) could put this team into the playoff pack.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, they are bringing that train wreck of a front office with them fam

  • roscoe

who down arrowed me? you’re soft too.

  • Redd

    Relax…lol wtf.

  • Redd

I thought Canadians were not close minded like Americans supposedly are? LOL Canada sucks & so do you.

  • roscoe

you’re going to piss’em off now.

  • LakeShow

    Are they?
    Maybe for the immediate time…
I foresee a MAJOR faculty make over.

  • Redd

The Kings however said that this isn’t true(the selling to Seattle group thing)

  • LakeShow

We all know they are just fronting till things are finalized…

  • Redd

You think that’s it, politics? You’re probably right.

  • LakeShow

“losing that great great great great Sonics/Thunder team”

May I remind you that the season they left, the Seattle Super Sonics posted a franchise worst record of 20-62…

In other words, they were young and talented, but hadn’t put it together and had to add a few key pieces…

  • LakeShow

    Indeed, I do.

  • roscoe

    you’re a wealth of knowledge.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nothing has changed from that team tho. just the city they play in. same management. same key player’s. i’m just saying, that was an all-time team in the making, and losing that and replacing in 5 years later with that Kings team has to be a little bittersweet.

  • LakeShow

    What’s a “province”?
Why are you yelling and calling people racial slurs?
    Calm yo azz

  • roscoe

that is funny how they take the kings… i guess they do that so the former players have a place to be remembered. interesting minutia.

  • LakeShow

    Copy + Paste

    :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

I’m from Toronto hombre. Relax and learn to type without caps..

  • LakeShow

And i’m just saying it’s much more sweet than bitter.

Chris Hansen is a beast, look at what he has done. Reminds me of Prokhorov in allot of ways.

I don’t think he is okay with being a crappy team for too long.

  • RKJ92

A Province is the equivlent to a State in Canada, each Province has a Capital such as Toronto, Ontario.
Secondly If someone wants to say something ignorant and can’t handle what I dish, then maybe they should go back to wearing diapers and having mommy take care of them.
I am very calm as well

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Or change it to the “Super Kings”

  • roscoe

    the S is for super
    the U is for unique
the P is for perfection if you know what i mean
the E is for exotic and
    the R is for rap

and you can tell all the noisy ppl to just stay the… back super-sonic. ohhhhhhh

  • RKJ92

I never compared Canadian’s and American’s once thanks for you insight though, And Canada doesn’t suck you are just an ignorant buffoon who hasn’t enriched themself in diversity and the experiances a city like Toronto would have to offer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Your point would be much more well-received if you weren’t calling other people “buffoons” while in the same paragraph typing out things like “themself”, “experiances”, and “Canadian’s”.

  • davidR

stayed in a condo in belltown, so everything was really close by. here in sf, i thought the ferry building was great, but damn. the food at pikes blows it out of the water.
also saw the chihuly glass exhibit. that guy’s work is insane.
    seattle is dope

  • RKJ92

I’m so sorry I didn’t know this was english class! I had no idea I couldn’t type sh*t out fast not caring how I spell while im dealing with clients at work! should I use APA, or maybe indent more!? do you think I will pass this year Mrs.Gaurav, F-*-c-k O-f-f

  • RKJ92

Like some of us have more important things to deal with then spelling on a basketball forum..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

More important things, you say?….like getting mad because someone said “Ontario” and then spending 7 more poorly-written posts defending yourself from negative feedback by other commenters?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i honestly don’t know anything about Chris Hansen other then his work with pedophiles.
    .
that last part is a bad joke

  • zogs19994

GUARAV ….IS IT PRONOUNCED LIKE “GAY-RAVE”

  • LakeShow

    Who is Jerry Alex?
The people of Seattle have NOTHING/ZILCH/NADA/GOOSE EGG to do with this, so don’t try and make the people of Seattle feel in any way responsible.
No one is being made a mockery of, this is (NBA) business as usual.

  • LakeShow

lol. Neither do I, really, except what I have heard and seen. Which is good.

  • LakeShow

Awesome man, let me know if you’ll be in Seattle again because i’m moving back and always looking to show outsiders the good times available in the NW.

  • LakeShow

    lol

  • RKJ92

Ya because I don’t tolerate people like you, so man the f*ck up or sit down.

  • AlbertBarr

I’m not saying the people of Seattle are to blame or had a hand in this reported sale. I just find it hypocritical to say it is ok to take another sities team as long as you get yours back when this is the very thing the people of Seattle has said is an injustice when it happened to them. Basically, as long as we (seattle) are the team stealers we are cool with it. And the Maloofs have said the whole time they would not sell even though we have local buyers lined up. SHADY

  • Redd

    LOL Canada stinks.

It offers nothing but trying to copy American culture, call it Canadian, then act like Canada has done something special.

  • bike

Sorry Kings fans. Losing a team to another city is like losing your woman to some guy that has a bigger d*ck than you.

  • Redd

    nobody cares Canada lol.

  • RKJ92

    Child.

  • LakeShow

Who said: “it is ok to take another cities team as long as you get yours back”

Your saying we should be upset that we are taking someones team…

    Umm, why?

We have been shown that this is the going rate in the NBA today, so we are just using the guidelines to get our self a team.

No one in Seattle is happy that Sacramento is losing their team. They are just more understanding than most.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Are you high, bro? You don’t even know what you’re mad about at this point.

  • RKJ92

We are a independant country do you even know what your saying? like honestly who were your parents they seriously f*cked up…

  • RKJ92

LOL HE’S PROBABLY FROM CHURCH ST. AND WELLESLEY

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    yeah!

  • RKJ92

I’m mad at how you carry yourself “BRO”

  • jedi420

So excited for this apologies to Kings fans though.. as a vancouverite I know the pain of losing 2 home teams so to speak the Grizz and the Sonics, can’t wait for some ball to come back to the Northwest!!

  • MikeC.

Please stop representing Canada, Canadians, Ontario and Ontarians in any way, shape or form. You are a disservice and a black eye.

  • Redd

LOL that’s Britain but I enjoy you guys following our lead while we don’t know nothing about what happens in Canada ever.

Thanks for supporting our American sports.

  • MikeC.

C’mon nbk. If that DMC trade goes through, Courtney Lee is leading that team to glory.

  • AlbertBarr

So it was an injustice when it happened to Seattle but now it is just business as usual? Where is the integrity in that position?

  • LakeShow

Where did I say it was an injustice?
It sucked is all I ever said.
    I said Clay Bennett sucks.

What do you want out of everyone Albert?
Tell us, what needs to change?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    haha

  • Brion

Not to mention Our Hawks are going to the Superbowl with a rookie QB!!!!!

  • AlbertBarr

Jerry Alex is the name of the poster who I was originally responding to BTW. Perhaps my statements make more sense if I had responded directly to his comment.

  • Redd

I know, I feel dumb for arguing with this moron, if you’re Canadian my apologies. I got no beef with modest folk but this dude is a pompous jack wagon.

  • Redd

Wasn’t trying to go at you by the way as I read you’re Canadian. I just find it ridiculous that he called out you being Mexican(whether u are or aren’t).

Race shouldn’t be brought up in a Sports site.

  • IshotClayBennett

Sacramento Kings? Who cares about that?

  • AlbertBarr

You, personally may have not said it was an injustice but the die-hard bball fans in Seattle have been saying that since the Sonics left. That is who I am (in a general sense) speaking to. Sacramento has an arena deal in place that is more than fair. We have the 20th largets TV market in the US. We have sponsors who have committed to supporting the team. We have local buyers willing to purchase the team and keep them in Sac. The people of the city have done their part. What needs to change is disregarding the fans that make the league profitable so horrible owners who have mismanaged their entire portfolio can not go broke.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Don’t worry about it – I don’t get mad about stuff that is said on a message board. Plus, I know what/who you’re dealing with.

  • LakeShow

    Geezuz it’s crazy isn’t it?
    Can’t believe the Hawks season…

  • roscoe

    lol… USA certified here.

  • Brion

ya good time to be moving back to the NW!! welcome back dude

  • LakeShow

    Thanks ma man.
It always is a good time to be in the NW.
    Wondrous place.
Minus the idiots on the road. Gattam passing lane blockers.

  • RunNGun

Wow… sucks for Kings fans. Maloofs are up there with Donald Sterling when it comes to worse ownership of an NBA franchise.

  • VanCityBBall

your repping Canada soooo bad right now… i looked throught this whole convo trying to find some sort of way to defend you but its toug-…. impossible. Please just stop and having the Raptors logo as your pic doesn’t help patten their already deminishing respect… theres a diffenerce between being proud of where you are from and another thing to be an jerk about it

  • bringbackthesonics

    ^ its finally happening

  • Raheem Shabazz

Please get this done ASAP so when I move to Seattle at the end of the year I can actually go to NBA games.

  • KBM

U r dumb so u should feel that way. U already dissed Canada multiple times, so dont try back pedalling now. I would think a veteran commenter such as yourself would not play into RKJ’s stupid games. And calling you a veteran is in no way a compliment as you r, Im no longer sorry to say, one of the worst commenters on this site. You consistently bring thoughtless, annoying little chirps hoping for some charity thumbs up. Pls pump the brakes on your posts as they actively ruin my slamonline.com experience.

  • AndyK

I have no clue. I would assume no because Gary Payton’s jersey isn’t retired in the Thunder’s arena.

  • Redd

    I won’t and I’ll continue commenting as I wish. I could give a X-ray less about a stupid thumb I post comments cause it’s a comment board.

I also am not back pedaling. Maybe you should leave Slam, but enjoy seeing my comments. I think I’m going to post more comments now thanks to u.

  • Reddisanidiot

your a f*cking dumbass, what part of canada sucks and what do you know about RKJ92
ignorant people like you.. smh scum

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

I think GP’s jersey isn’t retired in OKC because he doesn’t want it to be. If I remember correctly OKC wanted to do it.

  • Redd

Lmfao! Canada sucks, what a wanna be country. You make the UK look like the Bahamas.

  • Hursty

See if Stern veto’s this for “basketball reasons”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

sad for sacto fans but happy seattle will get a team back. i like sacto but to be honest never saw the need to have four teams in california to begin with. sacto had a nice run in the early 2000′s but lets be honest except for those couple of years 1999-2006 when has sacto been relevant. seattle has more of a history and the name change should be done asap if this happens. if the thunder want to take the kinds history fine! i would hate to see payton’s jersey retirement go up in okc.
