Sacramento Kings Will Reportedly be Sold to Ownership Group Looking to Move Team to Seattle

Bad news for Sacramento-based NBA fans, good news for Seattle-based NBA fans and former SuperSonic enthusiasts: the Maloofs are reportedly on the verge of selling the Kings to an ownership group looking to move the franchise further north. Via Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Kings fans were awesome when Bibby and Webber were there but Seattle needs a team. Cali has a bunch of teams anyway.

  • AlbertBarr

Jerry Alex…you just don’t get it. The city of Sacramento and the Fans of the Kings did everything they possibly could to keep this team in the city. we put our heart on the court and the Maloofs smashed it under their boot and the NBA was complicit. There is no business reason why the Kings had to be moved. This is a mockery of those of us who have supported our team from day one. And Seattle may be excited but the very thing they saw as an injustice when it happened to them is what they are doing now to get theirs.

SEATTLE, you can have a team again. Too bad you couldnt be given a better one, but its a step.

  • jt_DopeSole

They have to change the name back to the supersonics

  • Dymez

I knew this was coming. I was just waiting for the Maloofs to fold, and finally they did. They couldn’t avoid it. I’m just wondering how each organization will pull off its history now. Although the city of Seatlle maintains the rights to the “SuperSonics” name and they have joint custody of the organization’s history with OKC, where would that leave King’s history? It’ll be interesting to see what and how they do this.

I feel bad for the city of Sacramento. Got screwed by the owners. But to Jerry’s point: it’s still just an hour and 30 minute drive to the nearest NBA arena.

  • zogs19994

    WHAT STATE IS SAC-TOWN IN??

  • AndyK

It was cool being to see Webber’s jersey hanging from the rafters for a least a little while at least. Kings you will be missed.

  • LakeShow

Going, going, back, back, to Seattle

    :D

    Great news for Sonic’s fans!

Sorry to Kings fans… Not easy, I know…

  • AlbertBarr

    Today…a sad one.

  • Redd

And I feel for you, it must be difficult when SF & LA have a team but the thing is as great as Sac Town fans have been, Seattle was more better at building decent teams.

Sorry tho, must stink. It’s still not confirmed.

  • Redd

Sac Kings denied this tho, so I’m a bit confused.

  • Dan

There is nothing more painful then losing the team you grew up with! The memories of the players, the great times and the bad. Seattle’s 5 year nightmare is almost over but its almost as painful to take a team from the loyal Kings fans, it hurts so much to see another fan base go through what Sonics fans went through! If the Sonics are back, I’ll enjoy them but I won’t be like an Okie an gloat being a classless jerk. I’m truly sorry Sacramento at your loss! You don’t deserve to be treated this way. Unfortunately we all play by the same rules..

losing that great great great great Sonics/Thunder team, and getting THIS back. at least it’s something i guess.

  • davidR

yo lakeshow, i was just in seattle last week for the first time, and that is one beautiful city. the area around key arena is cool

  • Roy Leczak

Its not Seattle that’s “doing” anything, the way it wasn’t OKC “doing” anything. Clay Bennett is a bastard for lying about his intentions from the onset and misleading the city of Seattle. This is all on the up and up and in the open.

  • LakeShow

Yeah, I was too. (Not for the first time of course)
    Where did you go?
I went to Pike place while I was visiting family for Christmas.
The Pacific Science Center was the area where you were hanging out it sounds like. The Space Needle as you know hovers above Key Arena so it was always a great venue from a strictly aesthetic point of view.

  • LakeShow

Believe me, Seattle ain’t complaining about the team.
They would take the Bobcat’s with open arms. The great thing is that the Kings current roster is stacked with talent… It’s about a few key trades and a mindset change and this team can compete with the rest of the West.

How is this Seattle’s fault? The Maloofs could easily choose to not sell the team, but they want to. Blame the owners if anything, not sure why you’re trying to make it seem like the Seattle fans cheering for this is a bad thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

    Ontario.

Yeah, how does that work, now? Does Webber’s jersey gets transferred to Key Arena?

  • roscoe

i guess all the SAC trolls will have to put their cow bells back on their cows and become LAL fans, right?

  • https://twitter.com/Wayne__o BuenoWayno1

Nice to see the supersonics back but its a shame sac town is losing a team they invested so much passion n loyalty too…..guess the maloofs ran through most of their inheritance.

  • roscoe

what does SAC do w/ the retired jerseys?

SAC is now SEA, does SEA get back all the records OKC took as a franchise?

i foresee a little fiasco on the horizon.

  • GNett1983

daaaayuuum!!! i fckn live in germany & even i know that SAC-TOWN is in Cali!!! dayuuuuuuuum

  • roscoe

    get over it… you’re soft.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The Thunder will essentially become an expansion team. And the Sonics would then take theirs (agreed upon prior to sale of team to OKC), and the Kings previous accomplishments.

  • LakeShow

This summarizes where Seattle’s at in regards to NBA names and their history.

“When the Sonics left town in 2008, former Mayor Greg Nickels and city council president Richard Conlin signed a settlement agreement with the team’s new owner Clay Bennett that divvied up the team’s assets, and naming rights. This document essentially finalized the divorce, and, like many marriages that end bitterly, it wasn’t a clean split.

The championship banners and trophies stayed in Seattle at the Museum of History and Industry, while most of the equipment was shipped to Oklahoma City. (In addition to a basketball team, Bennett’s haul reportedly included 150 court side seats, 24 office chairs, three televisions, 200 CDs, a sound-effects machine, a basketball inflater, radios, headphones, and a replay monitor.) The Sonics name and history, however, received joint custody.

Technically, the rights to the name “Seattle SuperSonics” and their old logos belong solely to Bennett. But he promised not to use them in Oklahoma City, and agreed to turn them over to the new team’s owner (presumably Chris Hansen) at no cost, as long as it meets with NBA approval. Hansen is a diehard Sonics fan, so its likely he would ask permission to bring back the name. And, since David Stern already screwed the city once, it’s hard to imagine the commish saying no.”

Don’t go being unrealistic about the new Seattle team just yeah bud. The Kings have some talent, some very very volatile talent.

  • RKJ92

DONT MAKE FUN OF MY PROVINCE YOU F*CKING MEXICAN

  • LakeShow

    Talent none the less.
Like I said, Roster moves+mindset change(maturing like OKC did) could put this team into the playoff pack.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, they are bringing that train wreck of a front office with them fam

  • roscoe

who down arrowed me? you’re soft too.

  • Redd

    Relax…lol wtf.

  • Redd

I thought Canadians were not close minded like Americans supposedly are? LOL Canada sucks & so do you.

  • roscoe

you’re going to piss’em off now.

  • LakeShow

    Are they?
    Maybe for the immediate time…
I foresee a MAJOR faculty make over.

  • Redd

The Kings however said that this isn’t true(the selling to Seattle group thing)

  • LakeShow

We all know they are just fronting till things are finalized…

  • Redd

You think that’s it, politics? You’re probably right.

  • LakeShow

“losing that great great great great Sonics/Thunder team”

May I remind you that the season they left, the Seattle Super Sonics posted a franchise worst record of 20-62…

In other words, they were young and talented, but hadn’t put it together and had to add a few key pieces…

  • LakeShow

    Indeed, I do.

  • roscoe

    you’re a wealth of knowledge.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nothing has changed from that team tho. just the city they play in. same management. same key player’s. i’m just saying, that was an all-time team in the making, and losing that and replacing in 5 years later with that Kings team has to be a little bittersweet.

  • LakeShow

    What’s a “province”?
Why are you yelling and calling people racial slurs?
    Calm yo azz

  • roscoe

that is funny how they take the kings… i guess they do that so the former players have a place to be remembered. interesting minutia.

  • LakeShow

    Copy + Paste

I’m from Toronto hombre. Relax and learn to type without caps..

  • LakeShow

And i’m just saying it’s much more sweet than bitter.

Chris Hansen is a beast, look at what he has done. Reminds me of Prokhorov in allot of ways.

I don’t think he is okay with being a crappy team for too long.

  • RKJ92

A Province is the equivlent to a State in Canada, each Province has a Capital such as Toronto, Ontario.
