Washington Wizards Reportedly Interested in Rudy Gay

According to the Washington Post, the latest team to express interest in possibly trading for Rudy Gay is the Washington Wizards. The Commercial Appeal says the Wizards are offering Bradley Beal as part of the trade package: “The Wizards have had conversations with the Memphis Grizzlies in recent days to discuss what it would take to acquire Baltimore native Rudy Gay, two sources with knowledge of the discussions confirmed. One source familiar with the Wizards’ plans added that they are ‘pushing for’ the services of a borderline all-star talent that leads the Grizzlies in scoring at 17.8 points per game. [...] CSN Bay Area’s Ric Bucher recently reported that the Wizards made a ‘good’ offer to the Grizzlies, without mentioning the details. But the Wizards have positioned themselves to take advantage of the new luxury tax penalties by raiding teams looking to deal quality players for expiring contracts, draft picks and/or young prospects. A source with knowledge of the Wizards’ thinking contended that defining the asset swap required for a talent such as Gay would be an ongoing process. Many around the league have also expressed interest in Gay. [...] According to a person with knowledge of those conversations, Gay is likely to remain a Grizzly through the end of this season. The message to Gay at the moment is that if he is dealt by the league’s Feb. 21 trade deadline, then the Griz will have been offered a no-brainer scenario. For example, the Griz have entertained the Washington Wizards’ offer for Gay. The crux of that exchange would have the Griz receiving rookie shooting guard Bradley Beal in a larger package. The proposals for (Zach) Randolph have been even weaker. None of the potential deals has merit because they aren’t believed to be strong enough to keep the Griz on their current pace.”

i love rudy gay with Wizards

  • Redd

It should say “Wizards reportedly interested in messing up player development”.

It’s dumb, let your young guys develop.

I disagree, when you can get a talent like Rudy Gay, who still has room to develop, you get that talent. Who knows if Beal will ever be as good as Gay?

  • Redd

But Gay will swallow up shots, will he notch up wins? Yeah, but why take the chance when you can get a top draft pick & find a 3 there. It’s cheaper & you can develop the player better.

Gay to me, should go to a playoff contending team.

  • KipSmithers

    Gay and Wall? Interesting…

  • Max

*Should stay on his contending team*

  • Redd

    Agreed.

if the Grizzlies take back Jordan Crawford in the trade…….there won’t be an issue with player development, or shot distribution.

  • Redd

Probably true, but you have to decide who’ll be the guy you build around. In that instance, Gay would be a good choice as John Wall is injury prone.

If that’s the case, you get rid of Wall.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what you just said doesn’t make any sense.

  • Redd

    What doesn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

All of this – “Probably true, but you have to decide who’ll be the guy you build around. In that instance, Gay would be a good choice as John Wall is injury prone.

If that’s the case, you get rid of Wall.”

    .
Why do you have to choose who you build around?
    .
Why does one have to leave?
    .
You can have 2-marquee players. Infact, if you want to be successful you better have 2-marquee players. Seeing as how every other true contender has 2 main guys except Chicago…..who obviously suffers more than other contenders when their best player goes down. Unless you think losing to Philadelphia last season was no big deal?

  • spit hot fiyah

“gay will swallow up shots” wait, what?

  • spit hot fiyah

beal who is on his rookie deal for 4 years for max player who has never made the allstar team. they better gid rid of nene’s contract if they make this deal

  • Redd

Well you need to know that with Gay either Wall or Beal are the odd man out in terms of development. Well Wall has not been able to develop as he should because of injuries, so the best course I think is trading him away.

  • Redd

    ihu.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    WHY?
    .
just because you are saying that doesn’t mean it makes sense. There is no reason to believe a guy has to be traded, or won’t be developed. None.
    .
I mean, just look at Oklahoma City and what they did with 3 main guys. They did make a finals, and all of them developed beautifully. That should clear up why what you are saying doesn’t make sense.

  • TR

Who would the players be in this trade? Ariza and Crawford for Gay? not sure if that works financially, but it would seem fair in a way.

  • Redd

There is if he’s been continuously injured which has caused a consistent snag in his development.

If you could predict that he’d be healthy then yes I think it’s great. Wall is a great player & I’m a fan. But then you look deeper & you have to consider who the Wizards would have to give up. Not to mention it’s likely their top draft pick this year(potentially) would have to be given up.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s a problem with John Wall. Not with having other possible star player’s on the roster.
    .
to get Gay, the Wizards would have to give up Beal. The words are right there in the middle of the article, they built the trade package around him.
    .
It doesn’t make any sense to trade a cornerstone player because you already have another. it doesn’t.

  • Redd

Provided he stays healthy, of course. Then the fact arises, you never know if a player is healthy unless you’re the suns.

But in the end the trade or any trade, isn’t happening I hear.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

think about what you are saying. if John Wall is good enough to build around, provided he’s healthy. Trading him, out of fear that he may get injured, will only bring back something less valuable right? —- So why be deterred from getting a guy like Gay (i wouldn’t trade Beal for him, for the record. Beal is a better prospect), just because you already have John Wall? — And why feel the need to trade Wall when you get Rudy? Logically speaking, wouldn’t you feel more comfortable building around Wall knowing you have a backup cornerstone already on the roster? Think about it bruh, i’m not talking sh*t to you or anything like that. Just really think about it. There is really no reason to trade Wall under any circumstance..

  • Redd

No your honest & probably the most knowledgeable fan here,

I agree, again I’m saying a healthy Wall & Gay is great & if you somehow keep Beal that’s not bad but the top Draft pick would be better I think. So I agree a healthy Wall isn’t worth losing but if he continues being injured you could try to find a trade that helps you(the Wizards).

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You can’t look at Wall’s value from other teams perspectives. You have to look at it from Washington’s perspective. They have literally built the roster around the idea of Wall as the cornerstone for the last 3 years. To just trade him because you FEAR he will be unhealthy, you are literally taking a 3-year step backwards. You have to KNOW you are making the right decision to do something like that. And considering when Wall has been healthy, he’s been one of the better young PG’s in the league, and when he’s been on the court with other good players (Nene is honestly the only other good player he’s ever been with), the team is actually above average. —- (with Nene & Wall together, — in that short amount of time — the team has been 14th in the L in point differential per 48 minutes). That’s a huge positive for a team with 5-6 player’s who on some teams would be relegated to the D-League —- it’s better to take your chances, then to take back someone of less value to you.

If the Wiz are expecting Gay to lift them from the depths of the NBA cellar, they are wrongly mistaken.

  • Redd

But I’m saying if he CONTINUES to show lack of staying healthy otherwise yes he’s a good piece to build on as they’ve so badly tried to do.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if he CONTINUES to show a lack of staying healthy, then this issue is something we will worry about in a few years, and is not relevant to this discussion today.

Dallas showed you don’t need multiple “Marquee” players. You only need one as long as you surround him with high level supporting talent. Oh and also some luck (the best player in the world has the worst playoff series of his career). But its really hard to be successful when your point guard is young and trying to balance the passing/scoring load

If harden played up to his skills last year, the thunder would be the champs.

    .
    maybe? maybe not.

Tyson Chandler is so extremely underrated if you think they only had one marquee guy.
    .
just because he doesn’t score, doesn’t mean he isn’t elite.

  • Jonathan Mazo

No way in a million years do the Wizards trade away Beal. They have plenty of other players to include in a package

I agree with all of this I think a healthy Pacer’s team might fall in the realm of not having multiple stars. I think they have 3 guys that are above average at their position. And Paul George who is one his way to being insane.

  • TR

Tyson Chandler’s positive effects are felt on a good team, but if he was on phoenix they’d still suck or on the Wiz, they’d still suck.

@disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus that team wasnt THAT bad. Felton, Jax, Gerald Wallace and Chandler. Still got beat by Orlando in round 1.

The point was that Chandler has a positive effect on his team no matter what. It’s not like he just floats around on bad teams. Sh*t, a team with Tyson Chandler hasn’t missed the playoffs since 06-07 (which is also the year Tyson began “figuring it out” so to speak)

all I can say is here you up to great guys they should be given the opportunity to demonstrate the chemistry. so was it in the last 20 years have had a tendency to trade away players on on to greatness – Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, I think Ben Gordon too, there are more but I just can’t remember. There is potentially a real upside to the squad with a healthy wall. and peel and wall in transition should turn out to be quite a treat. act if you put Crawford in there I think it would be even better. and the last week bill has effectively almost won 2 games with buzzer beaters. And I like his self effacing attitude, not unlike John Wall. they do however need some help at center, as the Brazilians has been missing in action for a great part of the season.
