Carmelo Anthony Has Decided that Iman Shumpert Won’t Be Traded

New York Knicks superstar forward Carmelo Anthony — who moonlights as the ballclub’s de facto GM, in his own mind — is aware of the trade chatter involving teammate Iman Shumpert. According to Melo, the Knicks won’t and shouldn’t even think about trading Shump. Per the NY Times: “Shumpert knows he has had a difficult week. He has been trying to find his rhythm on the court and his niche with the Knicks. And on Saturday night, he became the subject of a trade rumor. The Phoenix Suns were said to be interested in making a deal for Shumpert, a second-year guard, in exchange for Jared Dudley and a possible first-round pick before the Feb. 21 trade deadline. Shumpert, who returned to the court less than a month ago after having knee surgery in the spring, met with Coach Mike Woodson on Saturday. ‘He said don’t worry about it,’ Shumpert said. ‘Rumors are rumors. I don’t really care. I just have to play ball. I can’t control that anyway. It’s nothing to worry about. I just have to go out there and play.’ Before Sunday’s game, Woodson denied the report and said he would like Shumpert to remain with the Knicks because of his defensive abilities and his high level of energy on the court. But Woodson also knows he cannot make any promises to Shumpert on whether he will stay in New York. [...] Carmelo Anthony was not concerned about Shumpert’s future with the team. ‘He ain’t going anywhere,’ Anthony said as he left the Knicks’ locker room Sunday. ‘He ain’t got to worry about that.’”

    Melo has spoken!

  • RKJ92

    General Manager Carmelo Anthony.

  • Happy

So says Melo, so shall it be.

  • Fat Lever

Let’s hope GM Melo shows better judgement than Boxer Melo.

haha well… melo’s makin boss moves.

  • danpowers

wtf? dudley + a draft pick would be a bad move for the knicks. its hard to imagine that the knicks could possibly improve in any way by trading shump away.

  • danpowers

so far melo has proven to be a great gm. getting rid of dantoni was ace and if this helps to keep shump: even better.

  • clos1881

    I love it

  • Dutch Rich

He has to get more minutes instead of blocking rich peoples views. Because some of those fans in the second row would trade him in a heartbeat.

  • Max

Without Shump they would be lacking a perimeter lockdown defender. Making them even less of a contender.

Dudley and a draft pick would be one hell of a package for a kid coming off ACL surgery. And it would definitely improve them this season. Dudley is a much better player right now.

if the Knicks can get one of Phx’s picks unprotected, they would be stupid to not take this trade.

  • danpowers

ît is risky to count on a draft pick coz u never know if you pick a bust. nobody can guarantee that dudley would fit into the rotation straightaway and shump should get his rythm back and fit into the system within the next 10-20 games. it could improve them right now, but this would be a sh*t-move in the long run and come playoff time shump should be (almost) his old self again and so equalling dudley. n in the long run the better choice anyway

  • manong

    disagree…rather have iman than dudley.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Shump is not equal to Dudley. That’s outrageous. Especially on these Knicks that rely on shooting. The Knicks want to win now. And really, there is no argument that Shumpert is as good as Dudley today or this year. at all. He’s a better long term option, but for Dudley and a lottery pick, they are getting more than equal value.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if you want to win now? that’s foolish.

  • danpowers

hmmm when u say so there must be something about it but as of now i remember shump last year and that was a player with the potential to go all out anytime while playing lock down defense not only on wings but also on quick quards. dudley is havin a good season on a lottery team i dont rlly know if this would transform into equal results straightaway. i think shumps rust will fall off come playoff time he doesnt really look like he lost much of a step due to his injury, just lacks some timing and routine

  • manong

we can’t test this theory anyway, so we can both put forth out arguments for either side. and without having the actual answer..how can either side be ‘foolish.’ I concede Dudley can probably play longer stretches comfortably and back to back. Dudley at 29 mins a game to iman’s 19; but Iman adds much better defense and I prefer defense…you have you own preferences… i assume… but i don’t devalue your opinion b/c its different. that’s foolish.

  • roscoe

what happened to NY’s assists and 3PT shooting?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

If Iman could shoot, I would be completely opposed to NY making the deal, but he can’t. And since he can’t, whatever he does being defensively (which before the ACL tear was as good as anyone) is pretty much useless . The team is far too reliant on shooting. And Dudley is one of the better defensive wings in the league. Although he’s not what Shumpert at least was.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Right now, this season, Iman Shumpert has been worse in every way shape and form. Defensively, offensively. Offensively it’s never been close between them. You can’t count on Shumpert’s defense as being much better (or any better) based only on evidence you had before he blew up his acl

  • manong

iman is coming off an ACL injury so he should not be where he was, yet. Statistically he is worse but we all expect that. I would still take him over Dudley on a 1 on 1 defensive point of view and team defense view point. I think …even right now… iman would still be better defensively for the knicks than dudley would.

  • Caboose

Woe betide he who disobeyeth the oracle.

  • Caboose

That’s like saying if Dwight Howard shot 10% less from the FT line, he’d be even less of a good free throw shooter.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Granted, he may be. But Dudley is still a better offensive player and above average defender, while offensively Shumpert is closer to a liability then he even is to even average while being a good to great defensive player. And the Knicks are reliant on offense and team spacing. It’s pretty clear who should make them better THIS season. And they are built to win now. Or try I should say.

  • danpowers

    …and will be again soon.

  • Max

Ok try making them even less of a pretender?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

not very often do guys come back from an ACL tear to be as good as they were. especially guys who rely on athleticism more than anything else.

  • danpowers

shouldnt you already know how stubborn i go about expectations about knicks players coming back from injuries?
