Jose Calderon Expected to Start For Detroit Pistons

Although he’s still ironing out some kinks with his work visa, and although he’s yet to play a minute with his new team, Pistons point guard Jose Calderon will enter the starting lineup as soon as possible, per head coach Lawrence Frank. Via MLive.com: “Frank immediately declared that Calderon will become his starter… ‘It’s no different than in football when you’ve got a quarterback,’ Frank said.  ‘It’s no knock on anything that you’ve got now.  It’s just that Jose is really elite at it.  He understands how to get guys the ball in the right place at the right time.  Plus, he loves doing it.  That’s his instinct.  His instinct is to give.  His instinct is to get everyone involved.’ Calderon has ranked in the top three in NBA assist-to-turnover ratio for three consecutive years.  His 4.44 ratio ranks fourth in the league this season. ‘He’s a giver,’ Frank said.  ‘He makes other people feel real good about their games.’”

Jose was a consumate professional in his time here. Seemed like year after year his name was on the trading block and he’d just come out and play in whatever role the team needed him to, starting or off the bench, without any complaints and pure humility. You’d be hard pressed to find a man who loved playing for Toronto as much as he did. Good luck and all the best to him!

If you watch the pistons on a regular basis like I do, the decision to start jose isn’t a surprise in itself. The only surprise is Lawrence starting a player with clearly more talent than what is currently starting. See, as pistons fans, we have CLAMORED for Drummond to start all year. Yet he hasn’t even though he is clearly better than maxiel. At least lawrence has the sense to start jose who is clearly a better pg in every way except for defense than brandon knight.

Don’t get me wrong… I think brandon can be a serviceable player in the future. However, as of now, he hasn’t shown the skillset to be a serviceable floor general for this team. His dribbling, passing and feel for the game is not at an nba level as of yet. Our backcourt is continually owned by other teams on a nightly basis which is why this upgrade was done. Singler can now move to his natural nba position (sf). This doesn’t solve all of our problems (we still have stuckey) but it at least gives this team some sort of structure.

I am hoping that jose can help out monroe and drummond, giving them consistent/smooth passes where they like to operate. Obviously, drummond is better with lobs and passes close to the basket (he has nice touch around the rim) and monroe is good at FT extended and the post. I just like this move so that our offense can look more structured. Those are just my thoughts on this.

It’s also very annoying on the nights when Drummond plays 18 but only picks up garbage minutes.

Jose Calderon is going to help this Detroit team immensely with his basketball IQ. Detroit is missing a floor leader on offense and Jose just might be the answer. Yes, defensively this is a small lineup but hey this team is still on the rise! Give this team another year or two and they will be an underdog in the eastern conference.

    Agreed.

Knight, not such a PG. Playing him at SG is more of a last ditch effort to see if he’s a long term asset to the team, rather than a trade chip.

too bad Brandon Knight is not the PG the Pistons were hoping he was. He is much like Roddy Buckets over in Dallas. Not a PG, but physically, a PG.
