Los Angeles Lakers GM Says Dwight Howard Deserves a Statue

Long before the coaching change, injuries, the endless drama, inexplicable losing, and the painfully slow recovery from back surgery, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak told Dwight Howard when he arrived in Los Angeles that he wanted to hang his jersey up in the Staples Center rafters some day. Kupchak continues to push that line of thinking publicly, and says that he envisions Howard getting his own statue years from now. (This, friends, is your cue to laugh uproariously.) Per ESPN: “Dwight is our future,’ Kupchak said. ‘Kobe [Bryant] has one more year on his deal [this year, plus one]. That’s all I can bank on or this organization can bank on. I have no idea if he wants to continue to play beyond next year. As of now, we’re looking at a two-year window, [and that] plays to the urgency of the situation and how we build the team. … This team’s window to win is this year and next year. … We’ve been very consistent,’ Kupchak said. ‘We’re not trading Dwight Howard. … He will not be traded and there’s nothing that anybody can do today to call me today and ask me, ‘Would you do this?’ and get a positive result.’ Kupchak called Howard the best center in the league and expressed how difficult it is to acquire talent like that, especially with the restrictions in place since the league’s new collective bargaining agreement was ratified. ‘It’s hard to get talent in this league and to have a talent like Dwight Howard, we have no intention of trading Dwight Howard,’ Kupchak said. ‘He deserves … belongs to have his name on the wall [as a retired uniform] and a statue in front of Staples [Center] at some point and time.’”

Never said he “deserved one”, just said he has the potential to have one in the future.

  • thesage

Somebody’s dehydrated. Get this man some water!

  • mick

Mitch said D12 is a very talented player. Well hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.

  • Redd

    Delusional as hell.

that’s 1 of the greatest quote ever, can’t believe it came from a 23 years old.

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

This is an extremely misleading title. I was about to come, not read the article and then post all of the reason why he doesnt deserve one. I can’t see this happening.

This a whole new level of a** kissing. Mitch is just trying to butter up Howard knowing that he’s leaning towards leaving LA after this season.

  • LakeShow

Where do you think Dwight wants to go? BK??

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

all this sounds very premature… i wouldnt hand anyone the keys of a franchise with that attitude

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    a$$ kissing to the fullest

  • Caboose

It’s funny that you think Dwight knows. His mind changes literally by the second.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

Who the hell knows? The man changes his mind more than a 5yr old.

  • LakeShow

Hence why I wondered why you wrote this:
“Mitch is just trying to butter up Howard knowing that he’s leaning towards leaving LA after this season”

  • LakeShow

It’s funny… you make up peoples thoughts for them in your mind to better suit your arguments.
When did I say Dwight knows where he is going to sign?
    I didn’t.
All I’ve ever said is I assume he will sign in LA.

Possibly the most misleading SLAM title yet.

  • Marc

You talkin about Jerry Powell ?

  • Redd

If Howard isn’t traded, LA will be pretty disappointed.

  • LakeShow

    What do you mean?

  • The Mauve Avenger

    Didn’t Mike Ditka say that?

  • Gregg Shorthand

Um, it didn’t. People have said that for years. I first heard it at least 15 years ago when my 45 year old basketball coach said it. Or did he first say it when he was 23 and coaching you?

    the Clipper fans?

  • GC6

I remember laughing when Shaquille Oneal said Brook Lopez is better then Howard. But I have been proven wrong LA should trade Howard for Lopez right now Shaq was right.

  • LakeShow

    Your a moron.

  • KingBenjamin

    You’re a moron.

  • Caboose

Oh there have been WAY more misleading titles than this

  • RayJr

I wish Mitch would see that Dwight is just content with being in the NBA. Dwight is not a champion. He is not a winner. He knows by being a big that he doesn’t have to try and most every team will still throw max money at him. Yes Dwight is the most TALENTED center in the league but not the best and that isn’t saying much because the center position is very very weak.

Dwight proved to me this weekend that he is not really hurt. Shooting hook shots from half court with a supposedly bum right shooting shoulder? Come on guy! If he was hurt he would’ve sat out all star to rest and gear up for a playoff push but NO and that is because he is not taking this season seriously.

How can Mitch not see this and still want to build the franchise around Dwight?! If he gets unhappy he will quit on another season just as easily without Kobe there to push him. Let some other sucker waste their money on this quitter. Like I’ve said before if the Lakers leave the franchise in Dwight’s hands they will be doomed . Trade for Brook NOW!

  • robb

Man, poor Mitch, so many tough situations this year he went nuts.

  • RayJr

    I completely agree.

  • robb

no, but JT’s right. Who the hell knows? Not even Howard knows what he wants. He’s like a girl buying shoes.

  • Marc

That’s the point I’m making i assume he was talking about Durant so I’m saying I first heard it from a trainer I know it’s an old saying

  • LeroyShonuff

  • LakeShow

But Hedo Türkoğlu is a winner?
I mean who led them to the finals?….

  • LakeShow

Wait… let me get this straight.
I’m a moron for thinking Dwight Howard is a better center than 6 rebounds a night Lopez????????
    Keep the jokes rollin gents…

  • robb

    Dwight’s a moron!

  • RayJr

They didn’t win and thats in the past. I’m talking about now and the future for the Lakers. I was ecstatic when the Lakers got Dwight at the beginning of the season. Even knowing he was coming off of back surgery I loved the trade and thought they would be fine even after getting screwed over on the CP3 trade. But after what I have seen this season Dwight is a clown and cannot be taken seriously to take over as a franchise leader.

  • LakeShow

    I don’t LOVE him either……
    Brook Lopez?………???

  • Rasheed

I actually heard Kupchak on Cowherd’s show today and he said Dwight has the potential to have a statue with the Lakers because of his talent. It’s not like Mitch said he deserves a statue now. But we all know Dwight isn’t staying so… lol

F___ changing his mind, he can’t be serious on the court for 48 minutes, he laughs, he giggles, he impersonates guys liked that sh!t is funny…. this kid wouldn’t know greatness if it slapped him in the face.

  • LakeShow

All those things could be have been said of Shaq…

    I’m sorry, but…
Dwight Howard has averaged 20-14-2.5 on 59% FG’s for the last 6 seasons….

Looks like YOU wouldn’t know greatness if it slapped you in the face.

  • pposse

put that statue on that island in idaho

  • og

The whole grammar thing went over your head, huh?

  • bike

Okay, Dwight’s a bit of a goofball–so was Shaq. He’s still the best defensive center in the league when healthy and LA came out on top on the Bynum deal. If you want a big man to be the centerpiece of your organization, what better choice is there over DH right now?

  • LakeShow

    Thank You

  • LakeShow

Yes, yes it did. Learn me please.

  • Redd

Well personally I feel he’s going to leave. Of course nobody knows what the heck the guy wants but I believe he’ll go.

  • http://www.facebook.com/frankie.marez.7 Frankie Marez

They Should build him fountain and have the water coming out his tear ducts.

  • Max

    To Boston: Dwight Howard
    To Lakers: Rondo and Bass

What do you think? It works out financially, and Boston gets superstar and rebounding and interior offense + defense. Could definitely win now with him there. Lakers get rid of Dwightmare and bring in Rondo and Bass, but probably would give up this season and wait for a push next year with Pau, Rondo, Bass, Kobe, MWP, Nash, Jamison, Meeks, Hill, Blake and Clark in their rotation

  • Max

    To Atlanta: Dwight Howard
To Lakers: Josh Smith + Anthony Morrow

What do you think? It works out financially, and the Hawks would get Dwight back in his hometown playing alongside Horford at the 4, Teague at the 1 and a ton of shooters surrounding him like in Orlando (Korver, Williams, Stevenson, Jenkins)
Lakers would get the perfect 4 to fit into D’Antoni’s system, they rid themselves of Dwightmare and get extra shooting that they so desperately need in Morrow.

    No thnx.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

kind of annoying. I had heard about this earlier today and just saw the headline on slam. I lol’d at how sensationalized it was. Is this tmz?

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

when i read the title i thought to myself there go slam again misquoting someone, but then i read the rest. Mitch definetly is hitting a new low in his life

  • RayJr

Who else could we get. Doesn’t matter anyways now with LA keeping him. But of course after I bash Dwight he has a good game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

d12 had one good game as a laker which was last night in honor of the GREAT DR. buss! win a championship and than talk. d12 is as mentally stable and as insecure as a kardashian. i hate to say this but he will be like a-rod in NY. if he does well great but he will never match the popularity of shaq and kobe of late and certainly will never reach magic and kareem status..sorry!

  • mike

better rebounder… yes. but along with more rebounds , you get drama, dissatisfaction, turnovers, bad hands , lackluster effort when not getting the ball, complaining , distractions, poison to team chemistry, and pay a higher salary….. so who would be better?

  • LakeShow

No seriously, I didn’t write a single grammatical error, and even if I did, relax. Itz dah intnetz.
