Mark Cuban Reacts Sarcastically to Derek Fisher Signing With the OKC Thunder

The early word out of Dallas when Derek Fisher re-joined the OKC Thunder was that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and his staff were less than thrilled. Fisher asked to be released by the Mavs back in December, supposedly to spend more time with his family, but has signed on with OKC just two months later. Cuban used biting sarcasm when asked about the issue by reporters. Per the Dallas Morning News: “Look, I understand completely,’ Cuban said. ‘From the time Derek was here to his signing with OKC, his kids are older, they can deal with things better. So I understand him having more comfort in being away from them.’ Obviously, Cuban was using sarcasm to make his point, which didn’t prevent reporters from pressing Cuban further. He wouldn’t budge from his somewhat humorous company line. One thing Cuban did deny was that he had a prearranged understanding that Fisher could return to his family if needed. Cuban said Fisher’s situation was no different from any player. He pointed out that the Mavericks willingly grant short leaves of absences for family reasons. Cuban said Fisher’s representatives did not contact the Mavericks in recent days to inform them that Fisher was interested in returning to the NBA. When it was pointed out that it’s only been 65 days since Fisher left Dallas, Cuban said with a shrug, ‘A lot can happen in 65 days. His kids are older now,’ he added. ‘It’s easier to fly in and out of Oklahoma City than it is Dallas. I understand that. It’s just a decision a parent has to make. Every parent has difficult decisions to make.’ Is Cuban mad at Fisher? Again, the Mavericks owner stifled a smirk. ‘No, I understand completely,’ he said. ‘Kids get older. They understand the dad’s job a little better. You just never know when it’s going to click.’”

  • roscoe

    * * * i’ve always thought DAL airport was one of the better ones * * *

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i think he was inferring it’s easier to get booked for a flight in OKC because DAL is so busy.

  • Caboose

Yeah, I’m fully with Cuban on this one.

  • roscoe

    is that right?

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Actually, he was probably being sarcastic about that as well.
Cuban is like a little whiny broad. They released him. They didn’t have to. He now plays for someone else. They kept their money. What’s the big deal? It’s not like Fisher is LeBron right?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that or he was being sarcastic. i am only reading it, so idk what his tone was like. and i’ve never been on a plane, so i definitely can’t tell you the real difference between each airport. I would just assume Dallas is much busier in principle.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that makes sense, i just am reading it, i couldn’t pull that sarcasm out of print.
    .
i think it’s that Fisher is a shady character. and that is Cuban’s issue. I know as a boss, I would not appreciate an employee quitting for a family reason, only to enter the exact same type of situation without inquiring about his old position for a busier company where he’ll make the same amount of money just 62 days later

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I could see if it made a difference to the outlook of your company, but it doesn’t.
And the family situation is “I don’t feel like playing for you losers and being far away from my family.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the thing is, Fisher didn’t participate in training camp for Dallas. He came in, took the starting job, and then abruptly left when he realized they weren’t a playoff team.
    .
idk about you. but i have a huge issue with a person making a commitment, and then using their family as an excuse to get out of said commitment, only to make the same commitment to a different team, just as far away from your family, 2 months later. Just because you are ring chasing. that sh*t is shady. honestly, i really really don’t like Derek Fisher after this (before i only really didn’t like him).

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I’m not a huge Fisher fan either. But for NBA players they typically can only get out of contracts if they have some serious outside circumstance. Unlike you and I, they can’ just change jobs. Now, they also get the benefit of guaranteed money, but I imagine that when Fisher realized Dirk was going to be out for a long time and the team was going to suck, the situation looked a lot less promising.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

uhm. i can’t just change jobs either, if i quit my job, it would surely take more than 62 days for me to find something close to this. and i don’t get paid 6 digits anyway, i mean, it should be harder for someone in Fisher’s situation to just switch companies in the same field because he wants to win more than he wants to lose.
    ,
i don’t think we should just excuse it because Fisher sucks as well. And again, I don’t like the idea of ditching a commitment because it wasn’t what you expected. you can’t do that at a normal job. or if you did, you sure wouldn’t get hired by a competing company without being a very important person. so with that being said, maybe Fisher is more valuable then we are giving him credit for.

  • shockexchange

Billy Hunter reacted sarcastically to something Fisher did and look what happened to him. Mark Cuban had better watch his back.

  • Mike Mihalow

The Pacers were so pissed, they ripped the sleeves off the Warriors’ jerseys

  • danpowers

    nobody with testicals does

  • Caboose

Billy Hunter is roughly the players’ equal, not well liked by the union, not well known by the public, and has roughly the same amount of economic capital and influence as Fish. Cuban is the players’ boss, has full support of the NBA, arguably the most famous owner, worth 50x what Fisher is (at least), and has far more resources at his disposal. Cubes isn’t going anywhere.

  • Caboose

    Nor should they.

  • shockexchange

Since Billy Hunter doesn’t have much more economic capital and influence than Fish, it’s okay to knife him in the back? The Shock Exchange gets it now. He originally thought the double standard was based on something else.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

LOL, Totally warranted. Fish punk’d out .

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

the team had an above .500 record under Fisher starting actually. He was solid, and it was working out. They’d probably be closer to a playoff spot right now if Fish remained.

  • Caboose

I’m saying Fish doesn’t have the means to do anything to Cuban.

  • shockexchange

Oh, the Shock Exchange assumed you were co-signing Fisher’s bailing out on Hunter and then getting your dander up when he bailed on Mark Cuban. So you don’t speak with “forked tongue?”

  • bike

Fisher’s stock seems to drop on a monthly basis these days.

  • vtrobot

Is Fish’s daughter still fighting her eye cancer(?)? If so, I would be much more apt to cut him a ton of slack. Doesn’t change the fact that he came back and signed with a better team tho.

  • shockexchange

Did they wash them in warm water to make them 2 sizes too small also?

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Why should it be harder if the player is willing to sacrifice his guaranteed money. He’s takng less then he got in Dallas.
Actually, you can ditch a commitment. Of course, it reflects negatively on you, but sometimes that’s the best move for you. I’ve done it in certain situations because ultimately the other offer was that much more impressive.
When I took my second internship in journalism, the initial offer I got was nice and I accepted. I then got another offer for more money with less costs to me. I reversed my position and moved forward.

  • yourdribbleizcookiez

    Cuban> Your favorite owner

  • Caboose

Hunter is a crook and should be doing jail time. Fisher is a manipulative and selfish individual. Cuban is an overly proud owner. I don’t like what Fish did to Hunter but it’s a hell of a lot more justified than bailing on the Mavs for no reason other than he wants a ring. Especially when doing it under false (VERY false) pretenses.

  • Caboose

Cubes is being VERY sarcastic since most flights going to OKC from either coast generally connect through DFW (Dallas’ mega-hub of an airport).

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i am saying, i don’t think you can really compare this to just taking a better position. He’s essentially in the same position. The money isn’t why he’s doing it. He’s ring chasing. And using a family member as an excuse to do it.
    .
If he was backing out of his commitment for the real reason of backing out, then i’d be more ok with it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Oh havahahaha lmao

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

At this point in his career isn’t an opportunity to chase a ring a better position? The physical grind of playing in the league means that at a certain point you need extra motivation. It’s clearly not money for Fisher at this point. Makes sense to me.
I understand your desire for him to be upfront, but the reality is twofold: One, maybe it is better for his family is some way. Two, Dallas wouldn’t have released him.
I don’t support lying, but I’m not sure he lied. He apparently did sit out for two months. Most likely he didn[t feel like being away from his family for the Dallas situation and asked to get released. He did that, and then OKC came knocking and he jumped at the chance to play for a contender, who he played with last year, again.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s fair. it seems it’s just a principle thing i have an issue with. but from your POV that makes a lot of sense.

  • orly

my favorite owner is Jerry Buss

  • shockexchange

“Hunter is a crook and should be doing jail time?” Relative to whom? At the end of the day, both Hunter and Cuban got “catFished.”

  • Caboose
  • shockexchange

Relative to “whom,” not relative to “what.”

  • arjae828

Shocked slam hasn’t done a write-up or mention of Alimoe’s passing. SMH disappointing.

  • Kmoney

I agree with him for once

    not cool fish, not cool

One could argue that the Law is a living entity, it does have literal/and figurative representatives. Judges, police officers/ and lest not forget the blindfolded lady with the scales. On a serious note, you, yourself admitted Billy Hunter was just as corrupt as everyone else, he clearly broke the law, you being mad that other people aren’t getting in trouble is understandable, but in no way absolves Hunter of his wrongdoing…

  • Caboose

Relative to whom? Are you saying “who” were the victims of his crimes? NBA players, since all of them pay union dues.

  • shockexchange

Relative to Wall St. robber barons and the actions of Congress who actually makes the laws, Billy Hunter is a choir boy. The Shock Exchange would go further but he’s sure you read all about it in the most important book of 2013. He wouldn’t want to patronize you.

  • roscoe

well… that makes two of us.

a lady on a bus told me planes are just like buses, but the ticket cost more.

i’d assume DAL is where its at. like DAL is the place to be, for sure.

  • Justin

WHATTT?? Alimoe passed away? When? How? Sorry if I am late, but I haven’t heard anything about that.

  • roscoe

wait a second… DAL is the center of the world???!

    DAL is the mega-hub??

  • roscoe

    okay… i don’t get it.

  • roscoe

i tend to believe dub st. is filled w/ ethical individuals looking to help the average joe invest for their future by earning a nominal fee.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Every word Cuban said was sarcasm

  • Caboose

Do you fly often? There are a couple mega-hub airports in the US: DFW (Dallas), LAX (Los Angeles), ORD (Chicago), ATL (Atlanta) are the ones that quickly come to mind. For fun, go to Expedia, try to book a flight from say Sacramento to Oklahoma City. See what city the layover is in (it’s Dallas).

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange doesn’t disagree. He also doesn’t doubt that those ethical people would turn unethical in a heartbeat if it meant keep their jobs. But he won’t patronize you because he’s certain you read about it already in the most important book of 2013.

  • roscoe

yes… yes… the most important book of 2013.

have you put it up on amazon?

  • roscoe

    not every word!

  • roscoe

i take the bus often. does that count?

i perfer “google flights” and as it turns out if i flew from SMF to OKC I stop at LAX for an hour. whew that was fun.

  • yourdribbleizcookiez

current Living owner I meant, sorry. Let’s pour some liquor out for Buss though.

  • shockexchange

Yes. It’s on all of those sites – iTunes http://www.clicky.me/itunes , http://www.clicky.me/kindleedition , http://www.clicky.me/nookbook . It’s reviewed by one of the top book reviewers in the country; the review is coming out March 1st … a pretty big deal for a self-published book.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Just about. Except that Fisher wasn’t a special case when he was signed.

  • roscoe

    that is very cool.

self-publishing takes a lot of personal bandwidth. good job SE.

  • Happy

I know you not talking bout streetball Alimoe. Say word! I been so busy with work I didn’t even know.

  • Happy

Th guy who shot my neighbor to death is a choir boy compared to that psychotic war criminal, Bales. But your brilliant logic would have him freed instead of serving 30 to life for the murder he committed.

You’re so brilliant. “Hey look everybody, if a guy commits a crime when there are other criminals out there, we shouldn’t hold him accountable”.

  • shockexchange

Thanks. It’s a lot of work but worth it in the end.

  • T-man

Oh no!!! Damn, sad news. R.I.P.

  • shockexchange

You should change your name to “Hyperbole.”

  • jaycee

Definitely sarcastic…. based on the fact Dallas is a huge airport, with flights across the country every 30 minutes. Flying out of OKC he very well may need to transit through Dallas airport from time to time.

  • Caboose

That’s not him. The SE who comments here is that guy’s son.
