Mark Cuban Wonders if the Lakers Should Amnesty Kobe Bryant

There’s very little that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban enjoys more than messing with the Los Angeles Lakers and their fans. When discussing the Lakers’ enormous payroll, Cuban wondered aloud if the team would be better off by cutting ties with Kobe Bryant and his massive salary. That’s master trolling, friends. Per ESPN: “If you look at their payroll, even if Dwight (Howard) comes back, you’ve got to ask the question: Should they amnesty Kobe?’ Cuban said. Cut ties with Kobe Bryant to cut costs?! That sounds crazy, but the Lakers are looking at ridiculous luxury tax bills if they don’t do something drastic to reduce their payroll, which is slightly more than $100 million this season and will probably be in that same range next season if Howard re-signs. This is the last season of a dollar-for-dollar penalty for teams over the luxury tax limit ($70.307 this season). Beginning next season, the luxury tax escalates for every $5 million a team is over. If the Lakers are $30 million over, their luxury tax bill would be a whopping $142.5 million next season. If L.A. trims the payroll down to $20 million over the tax, the Lakers would still get hit with a $75 million bill. And they’d be subject to the even heavier repeater rate in 2014-15, although Steve Nash’s $9.7 million salary is the only contract currently on the Lakers’ books for that year. Bryant is on the books for a league-high $30.45 million salary next season, the last year of his contract. [...] ‘So I’m just saying that hypothetically. When I say amnesty Kobe, I don’t think they’d do it, but they’ve got some choices to make. Now, they’re in a big market, but they’re still limited. The Knicks, the same thing. Boston, same thing.’”

Go jump off a bridge, then watch a Laker game. Really, WOW!!!

  • The Seed

If Jim Buss, gets rid of Kobe. The Lakers will not be the same for about 5 years or as long as Howard is there best player. Lakers are underachieving because of Howard. PLain and SImple. This same team with Bynum would be number 4 in the West, when Bynum is healthy. To blame Kobe for the Lakers record is just plain sad. Cuban using his Shark Tank skills, to get a shot at Kobe.

  • Conor

    Is that a joke?

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

NO, He’s only saying it to piss people off on the internet. Which he succeeded in.

  • Caboose

If I do the first, I doubt I could do the second.

  • dannyb

    Thanks man

  • Caboose

Good luck being logical in a Lakers situation buddy.

PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH THIS….SMDH….KOBE IS A LEGEND..

MAN F*CK YOU DANNYB,…. I BET YOUR A HEAT FAN

Odom can’t play pg. Just because you can somewhat handle the ball does not mean you can play pg. No.

  • Sérgio

Well, Odom was the de-facto PG in crunch time during LA’s last trips to the finals. He would carry the ball, and fisher would act like a spot up shooter.

  • i_ball

Why doesn’t he amnesty Dirk to save some money, the Mavs are not winnig?

  • MikeC.

I know we’re discussing greatest Laker, but Kareem won a ring with Milwaukee. Nuff said. In all honesty, I put Kareem #1 in all-time basketball history.

  • MikeC.

Top 5 can still be top 3. I was giving wiggle room for West, Shaq and Eddie Jones.

  • z

In the triangle, the point guard is almost a meaningless position. Odom wasn’t doing anything special enough to notice besides dribbling the ball.

  • Caboose

Are you saying Magic had a better Lakers career than Kareem or Magic had a better overall career than Kareem? Because I agree with the former but not the latter.

  • MikeC.

    Kurt Rambis.

  • MikeC.

The disregard for Kareem is frightening. Magic was certainly more fun and had more highlights, but Kareem had the single greatest career in the entire history of basketball.

  • ATL dynamite

If I do the second, I would probably do the first.

People have to stop calling Cuban an idiot unless they are worth a couple billion.

An example of the hypocrisies of opinion regarding Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan is found at one point in this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5Tv1mlM8fA

Duncan missed seventeen shots in Game Seven, against Detroit. Kobe missed eighteen. Every player has poor games. To think that Kobe somehow costs his team games more than another player – other than James & Durant – is ludicrous.

Would anyone consider this if the name had read “Tim Duncan” instead? No. Kobe earns as much as any other player in the League, relative to his personal production. He cannot control the injuries and delusions that the Lakers have suffered this season (Gasol, Nash, Hill, and Blake all have missed significant time; & Howard). That is bias.

On a separate note: Cuban attempting to take the mantle of “greatest modern owner”, in this manner, simply reveals a bitter man bereft of dignity.

    Wait. Isn’t this tampering?

  • roscoe

imo… he is doing it to make DAL relevant.

mCuban is a great promoter/business person and DAL fans love him…

ssmedium strikes and I think its always good for a little controversy.

  • roscoe

dfish was ditched bc they brought in sessions.

if i remember correctly, the 411 was that sessions being a younger better player than fish they got rid of fish bc they did not want sess looking over his shoulder.

den they picked up nash and let sess go if i remember correctly.

  • roscoe

    He just might. good point.

LAL and DAL may do a deal in the summer, but i think you have a good point.

  • roscoe

his business is located in DAL, not NY, not LA, not MIA…

his strategy has to be different in order to succeed and he has 1 gold ball btw.

ssmedium’s controversy is good for the game.

  • roscoe

    agree. good point.

  • pposse

haha, i was just thinking along the lines of Kobe being the first and probably only player to be due 30 mill in a year and getting amnestied. That would HAVE to be embarrassing, to have other teams bid for your services and you go to the highest bidder, has to be a big bruise to his ego.

I get that he can’t control it, and I highly doubt this will happen, but if it ever did could you imagine all of the reporting on it. All types of reporters would try to rewrite history or go deep into his career and try to discredit some of his successes while others will harp on the stupidity of the move. Its just the way the world works, we kick people when they are down. Imagine if the bobcats picked him up haha that would be too crazy!

  • Ben Ireland

I almost want to see this happen… Next week, Stephen A will say they should… Then shout loudly if it did. It’s nice to speculate, but not even Skip Bayless thinks this is a good idea, though he’s open to amnestying LeBron I’ll bet… (PS please do this Miami, even Jim Buss is smart enough to break the bank for the bank haha!)

  • z

It’s not disregarding Kareem to state that a guy who won the franchise five rings and was the man for pretty much all of them is likely the best Laker ever. Magic played for one franchise and accomplished more as an individual with that one frachise. No one said Magic’s career was better, but as Laker he is the best for that team.

  • HornetsCEO

He raises a good point, will the Buss family want to pay Kobe and the luxury tax.

Good article about their playoff chances and the Laker drama here http://ussportsdownunder.com/nba/read/opinion/can-the-los-angeles-lakers-make-the-playoffs

  • LakeShow

“First of all, it would be a major disrespect, since he is, arguably, the greatest Laker of all times.” -Sergio

    “It’s not arguable. Kareem.” -MikeC.

“Magic over Kareem by a sizable margin.” -LakeShow

  • Caboose

    Did you just quote yourself?

Magic career on Lakers > Kareem career on Lakers
    Magic career < Kareem career

  • LakeShow

Why do you keep commenting fragment sentences?

  • LakeShow

WHY is this difficult to understand…
It’s all there. All you have to do is read.
There’s no advanced stats to help you here.
Just basic reading comprehension will treat you fine.

  • Caboose

Dude what are you trying to argue? That Magic’s entire career is better than Kareem’s entire career?

  • LakeShow

    Holy F*CK your stupid lol.
