Nets and Hawks Reportedly Discussing a Josh Smith Trade

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

With the NBA’s trade deadline (Feb. 21) bearing down on us, Josh Smith’s name has been finding itself in the rumor mill with growing frequency.

The latest is that Brooklyn and Atlanta have had preliminary talks centered on the talented Hawks forward.

According to ESPN, the Nets are being aggressive in their pursuit of Smoove:

The two teams are engaged in discussions, but one source said while “there has been lots of talk, nothing is close yet.” As the NBA’s Feb. 21 trade deadline nears, Brooklyn is proving to be one of the most active teams in the league. As reported on Friday, sources said the Nets also are talking with the Charlotte Bobcats about a Kris Humphries-for-Ben Gordon trade.

While the Nets certainly want Gordon, sources said acquiring Smith is their higher priority. A trade for Smith would seemingly kill a deal for Gordon, because Humphries is one of the players being discussed with Atlanta. The Nets are willing to give up Humphries and second-year shooting guard MarShon Brooks for Smith. But it almost certainly will take more than a Humphries-Brooks combination to pry Smith away from Atlanta, and one source said the Hawks want Brooklyn’s first-round pick.

According to the report above, Anthony Morrow could be thrown into the deal, and the Hawks are said to want a young center in exchange for Josh Smith. A third team may eventually be needed in order for the rumored trade to happen.

Josh Smith, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, says he’s doing his best to ignore the trade chatter as the deadline looms. Good luck with that.

They are still not as good as Heat…

I don’t know about this one. Smith is a finished product, he’s not gonna get any better over time and he’s on the wrong side of 27yrs old. If a trade ever does happen I think they’ll give up too much to get smith.

You got to get some scoring from your front court beside Brook. Especially when your 119 million dollar backcourt can’t score on a consistent basis. MarShon gets no burn anyway. I make this trade.

so they want to reunite smith and johnson?

I call bunk. This started with some reporter making crap up to satisfy his editor. This trade idea doesn’t even make sense. Let’s start one that does right here in the comments section:
Josh Smith rumored to be heading to LA to pair with Dwight Howard in exchange for the man who’s time in LA has finally run out… Kobe Bryant. Reuniting Smith and Howard from their youth and finally giving the team over to their young star center the Lakers have decided to part ways with their fearless leader of the past decade.

Won’t happen, thank goodness, but makes more sense than Smith to the Nets.

who’ve been open about NOT liking playing together… that’s nice for chemistry.

J Smoove would still fit best with the Nuggets. I dont see how he could play on the Nets or the lakers or any other team. Josh Smith is an athletic, run and gun guy just like the Nuggets.

if Brooklyn can pull this off without giving up one of there best 4 player’s, that’s a HUGE coup for them.

  • Ugh

I started one of these last year. I said Riley was thinking of trading LeBron for Howard. Orlando get the star attraction of the league thus assuring attendance rates forever, whereas Miami get a defensive centre who can play in-out with Wade and the three point shooters, plus allow Bosh to be the mid-range PF he is, rather than a centre.

Nobody believed it, but it was actually a pretty sensibly trade.

How would the Nets be able to afford to keep him longterm? I don’t see how this would make financial sense. He wants a max deal.

    russian billionaire

I say Bulls trade for Smith by sending them Boozer + player or two else

  • Anthony Dixon

    Millsap is an better fit

  • JML-G

would be great move from Nets and for Smith too as far as potentially getting a chip goes, but will he be happy by probably not making all-star forever!?

I guess that’s actually a pretty good idea because then Al Horford could continue to play out of position and then the Hawks would also get to take on Boozer’s massive contract

who would the Nugs trade for him? because they already have Gallo and Faired at the 3 and 4 and I know they wouldn’t be thrilled to give up either

  • Happy

Not even they are above luxury tax rules. You pay the luxury tax for championship teams; not so much for a core of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Lopez, and Smith.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Brooklyn is who offered the trade. Atlanta is who will surely turn it down. As this is highway robbery.

  • Redd

Lets not act like Smith doesn’t have a door knob basketball IQ.

Give up lebron james for a bum with a bad back? sensible

  • O

Man, the Nets seem like they’re bound to be a mediocre team for years to come. Yeah, adding Josh Smith to a team that has D-Will, B.Lo, and Blatch would improve the team a bit, but they ain’t going to become an actual threat in the east. D seems like a shell of his former self and chances are he’ll continue to decline with every passing year; Brook has the potential to be the poor man’s Tim Duncant; and Joe Johnson has his moments, but is NOT an all-star, much less a franchise player who makes franchise money. The Nets are gonna be ass out until D-Will and Joe’s contracts come off the books. Even then who knows who’s going to be the top free agents worth signing when that time comes. The future looks as bleak as Memphis’s career in the rap game.

Uhm they could trade Wilson Chandler and McGee. The hawks could use a sf like Chandler and the hawks said they want a young center, javale fits the bill.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Smith wouldn’t work in Denver. Teamwork and shot selection is their real calling card. And neither fit in Josh Smith’s wheelhouse.

okay…so you have Smith, Gallo and Faired….none of which can play 2 or 5 but all should be starting

  • Irishway’s

That’s a steal.. I heard from the grape vine the Spurs were thrown Blair and a few other big’s into the mix.. I’d much rather see him in Brooklyn

  • VC

Heres your starting lineup: T.Lawson, Iggy,Gallo, J.Smith, Koufos. Backups would be: A.Miller, C.Brewer, JHam, Faried, Mozgov. Im sure Faried wouldnt mind coming of the bench as long as he gets his minutes.

  • Batman

Why not trade howard for Al hoford. Smith will be happy then. and add korver to the trade.

  • If the Nets give up Lopez for Smith then they can kiss their season goodbye…

  • big kamp beezy

Won’t happen. Kobe has a no trade clause in his contract
