Post Up: Amnesty THAT

Kobe’s vintage performance highlights a great day of hoops.

by Peter Walsh / @goinginsquad

Lakers 103 (28-29), Mavericks 99 (25-30)

Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki turned back the clock yesterday afternoon but in the end it was Kobe’s Lakers who walked away the victors. Kobe was lights out in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 of his 38 points on 5-5 shooting to bury the Mavs in Dallas. After a dunk by Dirk gave Dallas a three point lead with 6:41 remaning, the Mavs unraveled down the stretch. Both Nowitzki and O.J. Mayo were hit with technical fouls and Los Angeles scored seven unanswered points on free throws. Dirk cut the lead to two with under 30 seconds left thanks to a tough fadeaway foul line jumper. Ron Artest hit one of two free throws on the other end to put the Lakers back up three. On the ensuing possession, Mayo had a chance to tie it up but his baseline three drew iron. Nowitzki finished with 30 points and 13 boards while Kobe added 12 boards and 7 dimes to his 38 points. Amnesty that.

Warriors 100 (33-23), Timberwolves 99 (20-33)

Golden State turned the ball over 22 times, were outscored 62-36 in the paint and trailed by as many as 16 but still found a way to win on the road. Down by two with a minute-and-a-half to play, the Sixth Man of the Year candidate, Jarrett Jack, nailed a three to give the Warriors the lead for the first time since midway through the third. Ricky Rubio (16 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds) came back and hit a layup on the next possession but Steph Curry (18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) answered with a three to put the Warriors up 99-97. The Warriors were up 100-99 in the closing seconds but the Wolves had a chance to win at the buzzer. Luke Ridnour got a good look but bis layup fell short and Golden State held on. Jack finished with 23 points and 8 dimes off the bench and David Lee notched a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double. Derrick Williams led the Wolves with 23 points and 12 boards.

Heat 109 (40-14), Cavs 105 (18-38)

The Heat blew a 22-point lead but a big fourth quarter from Dwyane Wade catapulted the Heat to their NBA best 11th-straight win. Wade got off to a slow start, shooting just 3-8 from the field, but was unstoppable in the fourth. Over the final five minutes of the game, Wade scored 11 of his 24 points and led the Heat back form a late eight-point deficit. With 2:16 left, Dion Waiters (26 points) nailed a step back jumper to give the Cavs a one-point lead but on the next possession, the Heat took the lead for good when Shane Battier (14 points) hit a dagger three. LeBron finished with 28 points and 8 dimes and Rio Chalmers scored 16. Kyrie Irving scored 17 points and dropped 5 dimes.

Hornets 110 (20-37), Kings 95 (19-38)

The Hornets snapped their three-game losing streak with a nice home win over the Kings. Isaiah Thomas hit a three with eight minutes left in the fourth to cut the Kings’ deficit to five but the young Hornets showed veteran poise and responded with six straight points to go up 11 and put the game to bed. Anthony Davis led the Hornets with 20 points and 8 boards and Greivis Vasquez came through with 12 points and 13 dimes. John Salmons scored 18 points for the Kings.

Grizzlies 76 (37-18), Nets 72 (33-24)

A defensive slugfest came down to free throws in Brooklyn. With the game tied up at 72 late, the refs missed a call that would have put Deron Williams at the line and Tony Allen was fouled on the next possession. Allen went on to hit both of his free throws and gave the Grizz the lead for good. Brooklyn shot just 5-13 from the stripe while Memphis shot 10-12. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined for 30 points and 21 boards and Mike Conley scored 10 points while dishing out 7 dimes. DWill led all scoreds with 24 points on 9-15 shooting.

Knicks 99 (33-20), Sixers 93 (22-32)

The Knicks entered last night’s game on a four-game losing streak and desperately needed a win before embarking on a tough stretch of their schedule. Luckily, Melo’s 29 points and STAT’s 20 on 9-10 shooting did the trick and the Knicks were able to beat the Sixers. After taking a 20-point lead, Philly came back late in the third and were threatening in the fourth. Jrue Holiday–who led all scorers with 30 points–kept Philly within striking distance and cut the deficit to just eight. J.R. Smith (14 points) finally put Philly away when he hit a dagger 3-pointer with 5:36 left in the game that put New York up by an insurmountable 13 points. Ev Turner scored 21, had 8 dimes and grabbed 6 boards for Philly.

Spurs 97 (45-13), Suns 87 (18-39)

The Spurs led by as many as 21 and made light work of the lowly Suns. Tony Parker sat and none of San Antonio’s starters played more than 33 minutes as the Spurs’ reserves took care of business for much of the game. Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with 16 points and 9 boards and Patty Mills also chipped in with 16. Marcin Gortat led Phoenix with 21 points and 12 boards.

Blazers 92 (26-30), Celtics 86 (29-27)

Wes Matthews made his presence felt after missing the previous two games with an injury. Matthews finished with 24 points and nailed a clutch 3-pointer with under a minute to go as Portland snapped its season-high seven game losing streak. With 1:46 to go, KG (20 points, 9 boards) hit a layup to tie the game up but Dame Lillard (12 points, 6 dimes, 6 boards) responded with a bucket and one to give Portland the lead. Boston wouldn’t score again and after Matthews’ aforementioned 3-pointer, it was all she wrote. Paul Pierce led the C’s with 23 points, 8 dimes and 7 boards.

Thunder 102 (41-15), Bulls 72 (32-24)

The Thunder held Chicago to just 29.1 percent shooting from the field (the worst shooting performance in the NBA this season) as they steamrolled the Bulls in Oklahoma City. Russ Westbrook led the way with 23 points, Kevin Durant scored 19, grabbed 16 boards and dropped 6 dimes and Serge Ibaka finished with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Still confused why Carlisle put VC single-coverage on Kobe when he was on fire.

  • danpowers

whatever makes you happy: youre welcome lol

  • Dutch Rich

Rick could ‘ve had a 4 man collapse on the Mamba, wouldn’t have made a difference. He wasn’t gonna pass and he wasn’t gonna miss.

  • LakeShow

Are you kidding me? This game was not that impressive by Bean. His mid range jumper was off. Has been since the All Star game. Maybe a top 10 game this year for him. He was nice, but he has been much more impressive in several other games this year. He only had 1 assist in the 2nd half. Don’t get me worng it was nice, but you just need to watch him more often, this game is not out of the ordinary.

  • LakeShow

pssst… people HATE it anytime you compare those two. keep it on the D.L.

  • Peter Walsh

Should be his to lose, honestly…Does way more for that team than Crawford or JR do for their respective teams.

  • Caboose

You make it really hard to actually acknowledge when Kobe plays well.

  • Caboose

Obviously, but I was comparing Durant to LeBron. Just that. So yeah, you said LeBron is best in the league. Debate over. Simple.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

What does it say about the Laker’s playoff chances that they needed herculean efforts from Kobe just to defeat 2 sub .500 teams

  • spit hot fiyah

he is a lock right now if u ask me

  • danpowers

    indeed

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

    hahahaha

  • Caboose

And I’ll go on record, this was his best game of the year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

completley agree about Dirk. I remember arguing till i was blue in the face, that Dallas and Dirk were being very overlooked. That year Dallas’ win percentage was basically on par with the Spurs for best in the West while Dirk was playing. They kinda proved my point when they wont the chip though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rainman1991 Saleem Rainman

he looked really pissed with the finish to the game. They grabbed a rebound, and instead of the person with the ball(or the coach) calling a time out and running a play, they ran a one man fast break lead by Ridnour, in which he got a tough running shot to fly, buut no way it was going in. Rubio was about to throw his jersey off, walking off the floor, but thought twice about it.

  • danpowers

agreed. but i confess that i was one of those people during the post-decision year who wished it was the other way round lol

  • LakeShow

    Nothing much.

The Heat lost to the Blazers and Wizards earlier this season, and they struggled with the Cav’s last night.

The Spurs have lost to the Blazers.

The Thunder loss to the Timber-wolves, and the Wizards.

    List goes on…

Plus… Is this Mav’s squad the same one that earned this record? The Blazers are a great young squad that will give any team a good run for their money.
So things look on the up and up for sure.

  • Drig

Lake……..his mid range was off??? I thought he shot fine from the perimeter and from deep…….Plus, this had the vibe of a playoff game. Kobe came up huge at the end of the game, doing what he does best AND LA won. I cannot stress the 2nd part enough. It might not be his best game ( Indy game earlier in the season was much more impressive to me since no one could hit the side of the backboard on either side that game ) but it was right up there with his best games. He had 3 assists as far as I know. He dropped it off to Nash a couple of times for the 3ball and dropped a dime to Jamison as well if I remember correctly.

His Q4 though is simply the best he’s had in a while.

  • Drig

It’s certainly up there with his best this season

  • Caboose

Can you name a better one?

  • Drig

With the way he’s been playing, I’d be surprised if any other person came close to sniffing that award. There’s still a lot of games to be played still and that can change everything though.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this was by far his best game of the season.

    .

    38 – 12 – 7 on 61% shooting. 8-10 from the FT Line. 4-5 from 3.

5-5!! from the field in the 4th quarter. True Shooting % of .748%

    .

He’s had a game = those numbers exactly 0 times this year.

    .

“this game is not out of the ordinary” is a load of bullsh*t. maybe you need to watch him more often.

  • Drig

For one, the Lakers can still get it done without Pau, with an ailing Dwight and a spasm suffering Nash. It’s also important to note that outside of Dwight and Earl, we’ve got no decent big who can play heavy minutes if Dwight gets in foul trouble. Plus, when you think about how bad the Lakers were at the start of Jan, every road win, no matter how gritty, is pretty damn valuable.

LAL might not make the WCF like I envisioned. But this sort of effort is gonna be enough for us to atleast put up a fight vs the top seeds if we do get in. And even get a series win if we get a LOT of things to go our way.

  • Drig

Besides, milking the hot hand doesn’t necessarily mean that the rest of the team sucks. By your logic, what does it say about the Heat’s championship chances that they need efficient and herculean efforts from LBJ every damn night just to keep the likes of Cleveland at bay???

  • Drig

His game vs Houston near the start of the season. His game vs Indy. His game vs Den which LAL lost when Kobe went for 40+ or something. vs Utah when he scored only 15 or 20 but still controlled the entire game. Hell, his game vs OKC which LAL won at home recently was just as good IMO.

He’s had great scoring games throughout the season. I guess that’s what Lake was trying to get that. He hasn’t had a great Q4+the W+the scoring outburst+passive-aggressive balance so far this season so I can understand why you’d consider this the best Kobe performance. It was certainly his best “vintage performance” though.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i hope this is trolling. if it isn’t? he just showed us all that he doesn’t actually pay attention.

  • Drig

Statistically you’re right. For the vintage Kobe performance seeker, you’re right. But he’s had other good games as well this season that can legitimately be considered as his best for the season since he played in a more controlled and team-centric fashion in Q4 than this game. But this sure as hell was the most I’ve marked out as a Kobe fan this season though. Might’ve had something to do with him outgunning Dirk and shutting up Cuban lol.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Definitely one of his best games besides that trio of games where he averaged >10 assists

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

He’s had very good games yes. But this is the only game I know of that he literally won on his own, at least down the stretch. He had games where he was chasing assists and helping his teammates. But this, at least from what I remember, was his best overall performance.
    .
And it certainly wasn’t something “out of the ordinary” like Lakeshow so ridiculously claimed.

  • LakeShow

I’m just gunna stay quiet, and let ya’ll hash this one out.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You are gonna stay quiet because what you said came straight out of your ass.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, when he was doing the assist thing he was definitely making the team “better” but they are at their “best” when he’s doing both. He has to be a scorer tho.

  • LakeShow

All I gotta say is peep the +/-…. He wasn’t even top 2 on his team…

  • Caboose

SINCE WHEN DO YOU GIVE A SH!T ABOUT +/- ?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    The triple double against Houston?

    .

Against Denver he went for 40, on 13-24 from the field. with 4 rebounds and 6 assists. — Safe to say yesterday was better

    .

I do like that Utah game. That was like watching a tiger hunt in an ocean. just dominated in a totally different environment. I do prefer this though, it wasn’t a blow out, and that Utah game was never even close. They got dominated everywhere, not just by Kobe.

    .

I totally forgot about the OKC game. That game was great. So, I can’t comfortably say this was Kobe’s best game by far. But it still was nothing “ordinary” lol.

  • LakeShow

Pull up his shot chart and look at his mid range.

He missed 5 of 6 mid range shots in the first half.

Assists wise: He had 4 assists in the first quarter. 2 in the 2nd. So he had 6 in the first half and finished with 7 total. Meaning 1 in the 2nd half. The one you were thinking where he passed to Jamison for 3 was actually hockey assisted by Earl Clark. Once he gets his mid range back on target he will be able to fully take advantage in games like this.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL so you didn’t watch the game then?

    .

Is it really surprising that Dwight and Jodie Meeks had higher +/- when they played 6 and 12 minutes less than Kobe?

    .
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW DWIGHT’S +/- LOOKS BETTER BECAUSE HIS 32 MINUTES WERE SPENT WITH KOBE?
    .
Stop being stupid. You aren’t a stupid person. But you are being incredibly stupid right now.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i really really hope he’s trolling. because again, that hints at him not actually paying attention.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

then he went 4-4 from mid range in the fourth quarter, and finished 5-10 (50%) from mid range for the game. — above his average. above league average.

    .

the 4-4 he hit in the 4th quarter did let him take full advantage in a game like this. seeing as how they won, because of him.

  • LakeShow

    When did I say I did…?
We all know you care a great deal about that though. So I just wanted to make sure we were all viewing everything in context.

  • LakeShow

Why is it safe to say his game yesterday was better than the one against Denver? Because he rebounded more? And shot slightly better? Or why?

I think it’s a top 5 game of the season after reviewing this seasons games.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that isn’t in context.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    THEY LOST BY 12

  • LakeShow

With a filter. The filter provided by you fellas.
You have provided me with a new lens to view basketball through over the years.
One where this game by Bean is just… well… ho hum…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no. what you are doing is trying to make Kobe sound better by belittling a truly great game as something you “expected” —- because you’ve been gassing him up for so long that when he actually does play great, you act like it isn’t. You know, so that you can still breath all of the gas polluting your head.

  • LakeShow

    Hey, man… +/- man…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    here you go.

    man.

  • LakeShow

So when a player plays incredibly well but his team still loses, he is still at blame and that performance should be thrown out.
Hmm… Interesting way to view things.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you asked how yesterday was clearly better than the game against Denver.

    .

Well, they won yesterday. he shot a better %. he had 8 more rebounds, 1 more assist. He went 5-5 from the field in the 4th. 8-10 in the second half.

    .
I mean, if you aren’t a f*cking idiot. It’s obvious why yesterday was a better game. Are you a f*cking idiot?

  • LakeShow

6 of those rebounds were just right place right time. Another team mate would have grabbed those rebounds if he didn’t.

He could have boarded a lil better in the Denver game, but I leave that on the shoulders of the teams bigs, and best rebounders who were all well below their averages.

Just remember your first line you wrote here: “this was BY FAR his best game of the season.”
