Ray Allen Plans to Act Once He Retires from the NBA

The star of He Got Game says he wants to do more acting work once his NBA career comes to an end. Ray Allen—whose Miami Heat teammates refer to him as “Jesus” when he’s on a hot streak—has his eyes set on Hollywood when he stops playing basketball. Per Fox Sports: “You never know,’ the Miami Heat guard said about whether he ever could win an Oscar. ‘Crazier things have happened.’ Allen, 37, still has a few years left in the NBA. But whenever he retires he plans to become an actor. ‘Oh, yes,’ Allen said when asked if wants to act. ‘It’s just something that’s going to keep me busy and something that can challenge you and keep you focused on a daily basis.’ Allen has Hollywood experience. He gained acclaim for playing a major role alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s ‘He Got Game.’ Allen, who starred as basketball player Jesus Shuttlesworth, filmed the movie following his rookie year of 1996-97 and it came out in 1998. Since then, though, his only acting credit has been a lesser role in the 2001 flop ‘Harvard Man’ in which he also was cast as a basketball player. ‘Basketball has just taken precedent,’ Allen said. ‘I haven’t been able to find the time. That took my whole summer (of 1997 after his Milwaukee Bucks had failed to make the playoffs). Now, I’ve been playing in the playoffs. Mostly, you go into June and that time is so limited.’ [...] ‘(Leo) DiCaprio, he’s a basketball fan,’ said Allen. ‘He’s a Lakers fan from growing up in L.A. I was hanging out with him in Vegas, and he definitely told me to keep trying and keep going. A lot of people have told me that I should keep going.’ For ‘He Got Game,’ Allen was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Male Performance. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote that Allen ‘is that rarity, an athlete who can act.’”

ginobili should also do this, he has a head start

You won’t have Spike and Denzel to carry you every time, Ray.

Hope he takes acting lesson because his acting was wooden in He Got Game. Yes, it’s better than Shaq’s and 95% of the other athletes out there but he’s got a ways to go if he wants to be considered a serious actor. Next to Denzel the guy looked like an emotionless plank. And man, I love Denzel

Ray has that stone, Gnome, chewing gum slowly face.

Can’t imagine he’ll get too many roles.

Have you watched He Got Game?

  • Redd

Yes. Did you find the need for an Oscar from that?

  • Caboose

I’ve seen you in those diabetes commercials, Ray. Good luck.

Yeah, he acted/sounded like a robot reciting lines.

  • bike

He should consider trying out for the part of the sheriff in Blazing Saddles II.

He was very good in He Got Game. I’d love to see him reverse roles and take Denzel’s father character and do something like HGG again.

  • Seth

It would be cool to see him in another movie, but he is far, far away from winning an Oscar. He Got Game is probably the biggest role he will ever land.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Keanu Reeves is wooden to the max and still a good, successful actor. Not sure why people are hating on Ray Ray’s acting in He Got Game… Jesus Shuttlesworth was a solemn/introverted character anyways so Ray was tailor-made for that role.

  • Caboose

Cause Keanu doesn’t sound like he’s reading off a script.

  • Ugh

Was that a joke? I suggest re-watching ‘Parenthood’ with an eye on his delivery.

And if there’s anyone worse at that than Keanu it has to be Arnold.

i think kobe is the most natural and confident actor in the nba now shaq has gone. he belongs in LA. If there is ever a part for a player who plays for a loyal and great dynasty who betrays them to coattail to a surefire ring – he ‘ll get the callback for sure.

  • T-man

    Ouch ahahaha!

  • The Seed

His He Got Game acting was hideous. SHaq in Kazaam did better and Hardaway in Blue Chips did better, Darius Miles in Perfect Score did better, Dennis Rodman in Double Team did better, Dr. J in The Fish that saved Pittsburgh, Kareem in Airplane did better, MJ in Space Jam did better, Dirk N. in Like Mike did better, Gheorge Muresan in My Giant did better. BOOK IT!!!

  • LAguneros

    kevin durant in thunderstruck?

  • jaycee

Either way, another sick Spike Lee Joint!!!!!!!

  • Seth

    Manu Ginobili in San Antonio.

Because Keanu is the exception. That hooker from Twilight, forgot her name, horrible actor as well.Their success depends a lot on chance and circumstance. If Ray’s going to be the same actor he was in He Got Game, the chance of him achieving Keanu’s success is very minute. Look at all the big name actors, almost all of them know how to act to some extent, almost all of them are good.
