NBA Says Dahntay Jones Fouled Kobe Bryant Prior to Ankle Sprain

The League won’t take action against Dahntay Jones, but they did tsk-tsk the refs for missing the call on the defensive play against Kobe Bryant. The NBA says he did not give Kobe a chance to land after shooting his jumper, and that Jones should’ve been whistled for a foul. (Bryant’s status for Friday night’s game in Indiana remains very much up in the air — he tweeted a photo of his swollen ankle, and says he’s done whining about Dahntay.) Here’s the statement from the NBA: “With 4.9 seconds remaining in the Atlanta Hawks’ 96-92 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on March 13, the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant attempted a jump shot over the Hawks’ Dahntay Jones. After review at the league office, video replay confirmed that referees missed a foul call on Jones as he challenged Bryant’s shot and did not give him the opportunity to land cleanly back on the floor. Bryant should have been granted two free throws.”

NBA can you fine referees for missing an important gamechanging call? You fine players why not fine officials? its only fair

  • MasterSplinter

What does that do for the Lakers who needed the win…nothing. The refs at the end of the game were spineless.

  • thebluestepside

This play happens ten times a game. It’s only news because Kobe mouthed off about it after an unlucky fall.

Yeah it’s lame when the NBA goes and reviews and says “oh the refs missed a call” with no repercussions, and the losing team doesn’t get any consolation..

  • RayJr

Why say anything if nothing will be done about missed calls? Just to add more controversy? The NBA has been making their product look bad these past few days.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Yeah but usually they call a foul on that, I don’t think it was dirty but that does warrant a foul though even if its just an after the shot foul.

  • RayJr

People rolling ankles 10 times a game? So 5 sprained ankles per team? No it doesnt happen every game.

  • goattree

Big time lame. Happened to the Raps like four or five times this season. Thanks for realizing you messed up Refs, but it doesn’t give us the Win that we should have earned.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Yeah, and refs have sticks up their a**es and will probably T you up for complaining about their awful call.

Which is why I think coaches should have one play in clutch time that they can ask for review if they believe a call has been wrongfully made.

  • thebluestepside

The injury doesn’t happen 10 times a game, but that closeout does.

  • LakeShow

    lulz

  • Mattdub

This has happened to the raptors three times this season (and two other instances where the NBA was obviously too embarrassed to admit a missed call a fifth time where it decided the outcome of the game) . This league is a joke already, fine the refs for once.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes, actually it is a regular practice (they just don’t publicize it). Even resorting to suspending referee’s if the call is egregious enough

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that’s true. i also know four people who are hit by cars every hour.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jonas.manas.9 Jonas Manas

Half of the referees in the NBA are stupid. And they are stupid because they know their licenses condones stupidity.

  • TV63

Lame and weak NBA . Get some backbone! Tsk Tsk is not acceptable.

  • Caboose

Crawford ejecting Timmy for laughing comes to mind…

  • SternISaDOUCHE

I wish you were one of those!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Too bad cars can’t hit me because I’m like those things from the matrix. Sorry to disappoint you

  • SternISaDOUCHE

Seriously, all you whiners, get over yourself and get your lips off kobe dirk! If kobe doesn’t kick his leg at jones he doesn’t fall over like a douche. Stop moaning kobe, and all you butthurts

  • RunNGun

Refs miss calls all the time; they should get some replacement refs like the NFL.

  • Caboose

    Ahem, Matrix Reloaded

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

This makes no changes at all. A call is call when it is called. If a call is not called, then nothing happens. Play on. We know who’s in control….

  • dookie

This is where the NBA needs to extend the instant replay review rule. When the Lakers fouled after the miss, the Lakers should have able to contest the non-call and get the refs to look at Kobe’s shot sequence. If they deem it a foul, Lakers then shoot 2 free throws. If not then Hawks shoot shoot free throws. The right call is made and the W goes to the deserving team.

  • dookie

Calls are overturned in many other sports via instant replay (or similar technology).

  • robb

    of course it was idiooooots

  • Careless

These releases by the NBA don’t fix anything. They only highlight the referees incompetence and do nothing in solving the problem. That being said, any Playoff Golden Tickets for my Raptors for all the times you’ve admitted to screwing us over?

This year, the NBA is losing me with the terrible reffing. Ticky-tack calls/no-calls/ too many techs for nothing. Michael is shaking his head, glad he’s not playing today. Personally, i don’t think it was a dirty play, it was just a close out… we all do that. Now to watch LAL without Kobe is gonna be hysterical…
    Go Clipps!

  • JML-G

    rip Lakers

  • havoc33

That’s a very good idea, except I don’t know how you are supposed to deal with the fact that play is continuing after these missed calls?

  • shutup

How many times has Kobe gotten away with travels, hope the NBA reviews every possession he has taken part in and issues a statement. Even if they missed the call, The Lakers still lost, go cry about it….

  • shutup

Nice, if NBK gets hit by a car his prodigious comments will only be more frequent. Stay safe NBK……

  • SternISaDOUCHE

Ahhhh isn’t that nice. His girlfriend came to his rescue.

  • Bigbeats23

you idiot kobe kicked out his right leg Danhtay hit kobe in the left leg look at the tape you hater it’s people like you that don’t get basketball that hate on the greats so get fucked by your uncle again

  • Lance

That’s why it’s easier to just pass and play defense and make open shots. Mofos like that undercut your legs and knock you out for a long time. The fear of idiots purposely placing their foot out there. I just don’t trust fools.

  • bike

If Kobe had not come down on Dahntay’s foot, would it still be considered a foul? Iffy, at best. Players come down on other player’s feet pretty frequently on contested rebounds, attempted blocked shots, etc. That’s basketball.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    he wasn’t defending me genius.

  • shutup

It’s ok, he didn’t get the joke, I don’t think that he is one of the smarter ones….

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s definitely not. probably sprained his ankle writing these replies, since it happens so often.

  • bill

What’s the ratio of undeserved “fouls” Kobe’s defenders have received vs. real fouls left uncalled on Kobe’s defenders?

    1,000,000,000:1 maybe?

  • dookie

Restrictions and guidelines can be put in place, such as:

“Calls may only be challenged if the ball goes dead before the opposing team takes possession and takes the ball past the half court line.”

This would prevent teams from challenging calls simply to prevent fast breaks/slow play down/break momentum and continuity of the game is not broken.
