Blazers Ready to Part Ways With JJ Hickson

There’s no skirting around the issue for Blazers GM Neil Olshey—JJ Hickson, an unrestricted free agent this summer, will more than likely be playing somewhere other than Portland next season. The Blazers need a bigger defensive presence down low, and they don’t want to pay Hickson the kind of money he’ll command on the open market. Per the Oregonian: “The Blazers, who have given up the most interior points in the NBA, want to find a more defensive-oriented center next season, while Hickson – a power forward who bit his tongue and played as an undersized center for the Blazers – wants to start, and is eager to test his market value when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Blazers general manager Neil Olshey this week said he is not ruling out keeping Hickson on the roster, but he doubts the team will have the role, and the money, to pacify Hickson’s desires next season. ‘For us to make a jump next season, JJ can’t be our starting center,’ Olshey said, referencing the Blazers’ 47.4 points allowed in the paint per game, an NBA high. ‘I’m not saying he can’t be part of the roster. But we need to find a starting-caliber center who protects the rim and gets defensive rebounds at a high rate and that has a presence. And we have to do a better job at defending the paint. So you have to ask: Is it likely there is enough minutes to commit the kind of dollars JJ will command, when clearly there are other positions that need to be upgraded? Probably not.’”

so why wait until the summer? were no other teams interested in a JJ trade this yr?

how did POR not see this coming last summer? I know Olshey was not there at that time.

realistically wouldn’t POR be in a better position if they had traded JJ b4 the deadline?

i just don’t get it… here is another case on the surface of losing a g8t player for nothing.

question for nbk: during the top 50 articles i critizised aldridge for being a poor rebounder. i remember you saying that it was more so a product of a slow offense (less possesions) than him being a bad rebounder. how can hickson come in and average almost 11 a game and aldridge is still stuck at less than 9? if it’s a new offense post-macmillan, then aldridge should have benefitted from that too, right?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Aldridge is spending even less time around the hoop then he was before in Terry Stotts new offense.

    .

He is second in the league in shots attempted between 10-15 feet and leads the league in shot attempts from 16-23 feet per game.

    .

On the other end, Aldridge grabs 20% of available defensive rebounds. To put that into perspective, Dwight Howard is grabbing 27% of available defensive rebounds, Blake Griffin is grabbing 22%.

    .
So while Aldridge is a “poor” rebounding big man compared to the very best, he is not poor because he’s a poor rebounder. He just isn’t spending much time in prime rebounding positions on the court.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they tried to trade him. just couldn’t find a deal they felt was fair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/simon.ly.1029 Simon Ly

woah i would not say great.

  • spit hot fiyah

ok cool, that puts it in perspective. it’s hard not to fall in love with the J when one is so good at it. having said that, i feel like drive more, feels like he always gets fouled when he goes to the hoop.
and k-love must be an extremely good rebounder, seems like spends a lot of time drifting around the perimiter looking for catch and shoots.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well Love doesn’t help on defense. he would rather let your man have an open shot, then give up a rebound. And he charges the hoop on all shots on offense. So he’s at the 3pt line, but he’s charging the hoop on shot attempts.

    .

and as the Spurs have proven this season (and as i’ve been saying for YEARS on this website) – defensive rebounds are over valued as it is. All that means is that the WHOLE TEAM did their job. With Kevin Love it looks great when he grabs a defensive rebound, but he doesn’t do it for the benefit of the team, he does it for individual glory. (if he doesn’t, then he doesn’t realize he isn’t helping anyone with how he plays).

  • RipCity

plus he had a no trade clause

  • RayJr

Wow. I would’ve never thought Aldridge was second and first in those shooting categories. Thanks for the info.

  • spit hot fiyah

conclusion: aldridge is not good at charging to hoop on shot attempts.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes, this too. i don’t think he had to use it tho, Portland never found anything for him to say no too. (and he wouldn’t have said no, the prospect of being able to sign a long term deal with a team would have outweighed staying in Portland, where he knew he wouldn’t get resigned — or his agent did, at least).

  • LeroyShonuff

I remember saying similar things about Love almost two years ago during his break out season and last year. It looks great in the stat sheet when Love has 25-17 but them boards he crashes for often leaves his man open for an open Jumper if an offensive rebound is secured. I am a believer that more teams should crash the board for offensive rebounds, the reward like threes are bigger than the risk.

  • RipCity

it did limit who they could propose trades to though, if they could have offered to teams like the nets or bulls they might have been able to get something i think…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

how do you come to this conclusion? why couldn’t they offer trades to those teams? and who would they have gone after?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s not supposed to i assume.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

(in my opinion) the charging the hoop thing depends on the personnel and principles the team lives by. if preventing easy, transition baskets off of misses is your teams MO, then i am not a fan of everyone crashing the offensive glass. Nothing kills confidence like working your ass off for a good shot, only to give up a lay-up on the other end because everyone was so focused on getting a bucket.

  • RipCity

why offer the trade if it didn’t meet JJ’s criteria? He wanted to go somewhere where he could sign a long term deal and at least have the opportunity for a starting role. Why would he accept a deal to a different team when he knows the Blazers offered one of the best lineups for him to showoff his skills this year?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no doubt. Hoopdata.com if you want to look at every player in the league man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

because if he performed well in the playoffs he’d be even more likely to experience a big payday. and he would have had a chance to resign in Brooklyn anyway.

  • LeroyShonuff

The Nets seem like the best Option for JJ. He is everything they want from Evans and Kris. He’s active, can guard the pick n roll somewhat effectively and can knock down the 15ft with some regularity. I’m not sure if Kris contract ends this year or next. The biggest Question is who does Portland sign? Whose available???

  • RipCity

no, his bird rights wouldn’t have transferred over. He was a strange case since he was waived by the kings last year and portland picked him up. here is a good article on what happened: http://thehoopdoctors.com/online2/2013/01/portland-trail-blazers-shouldnt-trade-j-j-hickson/

    relevant section:
The inquiring phone calls are going to Hickson’s agent Andy Miller, first, the source said.
Here’s why: Hickson is a Bird Rights player on a one-year, $4 million deal and he has the power to veto any trade that is proposed. If he approves a deal, he will lose his Bird Rights. It would have to be the right team and the right situation for Hickson to give up his rights.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh wow, i totally forgot about that rule. thanks a lot man, i totally see where you are coming from now. you are completely right.

  • RipCity

    no worries

  • RipCity

thats jj hicksons job, hence all the rebounds this year

  • playa

After this year??? How stupid for them

  • JML-G

Portland should try to get Josh Smith imo

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    bummer

  • Drig

Not if you’re a team that struggles with transition D. It depends on the personnel IMO.

  • roscoe

    good memory.

  • roscoe

    idk this. interesting.

  • roscoe

“g8t” should have been said “g8t young player”… he is a legit rebounder and teams will be trying hard to land him.

  • roscoe

    exactly.

  • roscoe

    nice footnote.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you can bet he will be overpaid though. his performance this season is being over glorified. He’s been a putrid defensive player, and generally hasn’t helped them much. Especially playing Center.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

So I guess their inability to defend the paint has nothing to do with the other guy playing next to Hickson?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s been a blessing. just wish i could remember somethings that aren’t NBA related.

  • davidR

should he be a center tho? he’s only 6’9” if i remember correctly. can he be an effective PF?

  • danpowers

where was kevin love ranking in that last season? didnt he pull down 13,3 rebounds per game while also shooting alot from outside?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

  • danpowers

feel ya on that one. i wish my ex gfs, relatives, professors and employers all played in the nba…

  • danpowers

aaahhhh ok. just got it lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the one outscoring, out rebounding, and out assisting his opponent every game?
    http://www.82games.com/1213/12POR13.HTM

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    haha me too bruh

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

since you asked tho Love grabbed…

    - 34% of all defensive rebounds & 13.7% of all offensive rebounds in 2010-11, the year he averaged over 15 total.

    — roughly twice as many offensive rebounds as Aldridge get’s today. And about 15% more defensively.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no he shouldn’t be a Center. But at PF, he’s going to have to guard even better scorers and decision makers with the ball. – it would be hard to convince me he’s going to be a good PF.

  • danpowers

lets l.a. look quite bad in this aspect of his game. he got other qualities tho, still a great contributor. was just an unlucky mix to put hickson next to him. both nice players, just wont anchor any team’s d.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you have to learn how to put 2 and 2 together.
    .
Aldridge is the best offensive player and the second best defensive player on his team. His rebounding %’s don’t make him look bad if you understand the context of what he’s doing. He’s not disregarding defense in favor of getting rebounds. I would rather have Aldridge on defense, grabbing his 20% of all available rebounds while being a very good man and help defender, then have Kevin Love and his 35% of defensive rebounds while he completely ignores team defense.
And I would also rather have Aldridge on offense if he’s my best offensive player, because there is structure to his game that you can build an offense around. While Love is more of an offensive nomad.

  • danpowers

was just talking about rebounding in terms of looking bad. id also take l.a. over most 4s out there. it was just an unfortunate mix that the blazers had him and hickson out there. i think you get the best of both for your team if you do what the blazers would like to do next year anyway: get a center who can protect the rim. i just wonder where they could get such a guy, as they obviously just dont grow on trees.

id even say love is one of the most overrated guys out there. when the wolves have him and rubio out there its more rubio than him who gets that team clicking. love is a great asset to have on a team tho, but so far i wouldnt see him as an engine which pushes any team forward.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    oh i understand, my fault.
    - they did sign Hibbert to the max last summer. Indiana just matched. I wouldn’t rule out Portland making a move for Marcin Gortat to fill this need. They do have options, so we can only wait and see.
—- completely agree with you about Kevin Love.

  • danpowers

yeah i remember that move. gortat would be like the jackpot as hibbert is “gone”. i just hope they wont end up with dalembert or someone like that. for whatever reason i always like to know that somewhere out there is a strong portland team playing for a top seed in the west.

—–half the comminity didnt during the top 50 countdown prior to the season but where were you to have reason’s and in this case my back? you werent here that day!!!!

  • blazing

Man good to know, well at least they are effective rebounders/defenders on 2k still.

  • Alyson Miller

If you think Lois`s story is unbelievable,, four weeks ago my cousins boyfriend also made $8849 grafting fifteen hours a week from there house and there roomate’s step-sister`s neighbour has done this for 10-months and actually earned over $8849 parttime from there mac. use the guidelines from this website, Big31.com

  • JL

Dalembert. Not that he fits, well I guess short term he’s ok. But they should get Al Jefferson maybe.

  • JL

Not easy being a Rip City fan in recent years! I was living in Portland a year ago and I loved it. Great fans too. Kinda pissed I missed out on seeing Lillard.

  • danpowers

look at your contribution on that page. i just found one statement in there by you telling me that love was better than melo lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

haha i know, just joking. that’s why i linked that one comment

  • danpowers

    you… you shouldve been there…
