LeBron James Mad He Didn’t Win Defensive Player of the Year Award

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Ever since Marc Gasol was named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, there has been no shortage of complaints.

Dwight Howard claimed that Serge Ibaka was robbed; Manu Ginobili (unhappy with Tim Duncan finishing 6th) pushed forward the idea that instead of the media determining the award, players should be the ones voting.

LeBron James says that it “sucks” he came in second to Gasol for the DPOY trophy.

Per the Palm Beach Post:

“It sucks,” James said. “It sucks. It sucks.” James was asked if his candidacy for other awards — notably the MVP — hurt his chances. “I don’t know,” James said. “It definitely sucks, though. Finishing second? Who wants to finish second?”

Was this his best defensive season?“Probably,” James said. “I mean, I guard everybody on the floor. I don’t know if there’s one player in NBA history who’s guarded one through five (positions). It’s over with now, but that’s cool.”

LeBron James is the League’s most versatile defender — head coach Erik Spoelstra has unimaginatively nicknamed him “One Through Five” — and was certainly deserving of the award this season. Marc Gasol may have benefitted from voters not wanting LeBron to win everything, and the advanced metrics seemed to favor the Grizzlies’ center.

The Miami Heat superstar will just have to settle for the MVP again. Not a bad consolation prize, all things considered.

Shut up Lebron groupie go sit down

  • Blarmac

    Should’ve used his shoe.

  • Elliot

did Kevin Durant cry when LeBron won MVP a few years back when its should of been Durant? NO! did Ray Allen cry when he clearly deserved All-Star MVP in 08 but the gave it to LeBron (who didnt deserve it)? NO! How about you congratulate Marc on something it clearly deserved instead of bitching and moaning, I don’t even know how LeBron came in second there are better defensive players than LeBron.

  • Calvin

Don’t worry LeBron, you’ll be getting MVP anyway.

  • K_HOLIDAY

Marc Gasol was def a surprise to me. I didnt even know he was in the running

  • Vince

Lebron deserves all the MVP’s you mentioned. Get your facts straight moron

  • Dagger

I hate comments like this. You don’t know how the question was asked, and so you can’t judge the response. If the reporter asked, “how do you feel about not winning the award,” should Lebron have said “I’m just glad Gasol won it”? Maybe, but I won’t criticize the guy for expressing that he’d rather have won.

  • Elliot

if you actually think LeBron deserved the All Star MVP in 08 of Ray Allen you are clinically retarded.

  • Lloyd

He’s not complaining. He said it sucks to lose, especially when you lose by a little. And he is the most versatile defender in the league. Stop hating please.

  • EJ

    No.

  • http://www.facebook.com/raymond.luhur Raymond Luhur

and everybody mad at your comment, bron

  • Iggi Vasquez

Is this supposed to make King James
    feel bad???

  • bike

They usually give DPOY to bigs although Jordan won in in ’88 which LeBron no doubt is aware of. He could still win it over the next 3-4 years. It’s one of those awards that is dependent on the eyes of the beholder.

  • shockexchange

LeBron has in his possession a very important doctrine that gives him an unfair advantage. The League wants to calibrate things and give less advantaged players a chance.

  • Vince

27pts 9ast 8rebs looks more of a MVP numbers to me than 28pts 1ast 2rebs. What do you think? You don’t need to be Lebron fan or NBA Genious to know which stats are better and MVP worthy

  • mont

    how bout GP?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    misleading a$$ headline.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    slam tryna stir up drama

  • robb

he didn’t cry, he’s just saying it sucks because he finished second, not because Marc won it. And Durant has never deserved an MVP more than Lebron what are you talking about?

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

The man is not crying I swear I’m sick people disecting every thing lebron says! He’s a winner what do expect! Get off the best player of today!

  • robb

    your answer Elliot?

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

    Lebron is king!

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

    No he’s LJ

  • Max

I like how you used it for Marc.

  • Max

Read the article, not the headline.

  • Real Talk

when is the award ever going to go to true defensive players, that have a spot in the league for that purpose alone. Everyone knows tony allen is memphis’s defensive player not Gasol….or how about Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, Thabo Sefalosha, Kevin Garnett, Shane Battier, Matt Barnes. These are real defensive players who pride their game on that fact

  • Reedo

Nobody is hating on Marc he’s on a great defensive team He shouldnt have won it, he’s not the anchor of that D they have so many big bodies ZBo, D Arthur, ED davis, not to mention Tony allen and Tayshaun locking up the wings. but its over now.. Maybe next year Bron

  • Lloyd

…I did read the article. The headline is the one that’s making it seem like he’s angry that Gasol won and not him. The article is him just saying it’s sucks that he lost because no one likes to lose.

  • http://twitter.com/jay258064 jay jay

Take it has you wane take it and I didn’t no he was ur king u must be in your knees too

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that doesn’t mean they have the most defensive impact. and having a guy who gives you nothing on offense actually hurts your defense, anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

shoulda paid closer attention. he was a top 3 candidate the whole season.

  • Max

Isn’t that a bit contradictive of what you said in your first post?

  • K_HOLIDAY

I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I follow the DPOY race. I’m just saying all stats aside, just watching games all year, I would’ve never guessed he was in the running.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes he was the anchor of that defense.

    .

The Grizzlies Defense with Gasol on the Floor gives up 99.8 points per 48 minutes.

    .

The Grizzlies Defense without Gasol on the Floor Gives up 105.9 points

    .

    Tony Allen? – 98.2 and 104.9

    .

A 6.5 point difference with Gasol

A 6.7 point difference with Allen

    .

    .Gasol played 35MPG

    .Allen played 26MPG
    .
    See the difference?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you didn’t see much Grizzlies games?

  • K_HOLIDAY

I’ve honestly watched about 25 Grizzles games this year. I can see during the games how he makes an impact defensively. He protects the paint, rebounds, knows how to hedge in pick and roll situations, and does everything right, but I just picture the defensive player of the year being someone that disrupts your offense night in and night out. Even though Gasol is always on point defensively, he’s not the nuisance (IMO) that Avery Bradley or Tony Allen and those types of guys are so it’s easy to miss him. Thats probably more of the reason why I didnt even realize he was in the running

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

those guys are only a nuisance to one player. they aren’t a nuisance to a whole team. having a guy that can do this…. http://cdn3.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/11965907/marc-gasol-shoe-foul.0_standard_709.0.gif

    .

    .

just kidding, here’s a really good description of what he was doing for the Grizzlies, http://www.sbnation.com/2013/3/15/4108416/marc-gasol-grizzlies-defensive-player-of-the-year

waa waa, coming from the dude that won the last couple mvps..who cares.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

HAHA this is incredible. Kevin Durant deserved an MVP? Ray Allen cares about an All Star game? he’s b*tching and moaning?
    .
this is a fantastical world you live in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

Tough guy! I like the insight you bring to the discussions though

  • Real Talk

Stop just reading the numbers and actually look at the whole picture. How many centres are avg 20+ vs guards avg 20+. Now tell me who has a better defensive night. Allen regularly defending elite guards and holding say Kobe to 25 or Gasol holding Deadre Jordan to 25

  • Real Talk

Defensive impact is completely unrelated to defensive ability. Celtics are far better on defense with KG then without cuz of his communication and leadership. Too bad he’s old now. He was a great defensive player but skill wise now Bradley is their best defender and has the toughest assignments every night

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You still not grasping the whole concept of team > individual?
    .
Wing guys are better defenders, sure. But they aren’t more effective or valuable. Again, because affecting a whole team is more important than affecting an individual. .
Which is why the Grizzlies defense becomes average when Gasol goes to the bench.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s not the defensive ability award

  • Lloyd

How? He’s not “b*tching and moaning” as the original poster said. That’s what I’ve been saying…

  • Max

Oh damn, I misread your name, I tought you were the first poster (Elliot).
    My bad dood.

  • Iggi Vasquez

Hey, Dummy…You probably can’t help to make gay comments…..but we should stick to basketball talk…. You should save that gay talk for your bedroom with partner… FYI his nickname is KING JAMES and he’s the MVP weather you like it or not…

  • Bandwagonfan

Not ray allen but other guys.

  • Iggi Vasquez

So u THINK u know basketball more than me, which means u not sure…. Tell me did u get a headache during all that thinking?? U SHOULD LEAVE THE THINKING TO SOMEONE ELSE… Well I won’t say I know basketball more than u, cause I don’t u; but I do accept ur apology…..I’ve never been called dirty minded b4, but I have been called open minded…..Viva King James… Why u hate the King… By the way he’s not my favorite…WOW is AKA D.Wade!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/jay258064 jay jay

i like thinking makes me smarttt lol and D.Wade is good player would of had a better career if he had his own team and if lebron didnt joined him in my mind.

  • Iggi Vasquez

You right about D Wade, but the fact is he wants rings and how do you get rings by wining championship and how do you win championship by getting the best player to join you.

  • Sulaiman Ali

Lebron is a legend in his own mind. he i the worst on ball defender amongst starters. It would be interesting to hear his reasoning for being the DPOY. Just be cause you are asked to guard 1-5 positions doesn’t mean you are doing it effectively.
