Mark Cuban Would Draft Brittney Griner

by Marcel Mutoni@ marcel_mutoni

According to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, he would be willing to give Baylor’s Brittney Griner the chance to play in the NBA.

Ann Meyers Drysdale was the first woman to get a tryout with an NBA team — coming out of UCLA, the women’s Olympic star signed a contract with the Indiana Pacers in 1979 but didn’t make the team — and Cuban says he’d give Griner a similar shot.

Per the Dallas Morning News:

Mark Cuban was talking about NBA prospects and a young Asian guard in particular. He gave his stock answer. “If he’s good, we’re looking at him,” Cuban said. “I don’t care if the guy is from Upper Slobovia. If he can play, we’ll take them. If Brittney Griner can play, we’ll take her with our second-round pick. I don’t care.” And with that, the can of worms officially got ripped open. Cuban said he’s serious about the possibility of bringing in Baylor’s 6-8 star now that her college eligibility is done.

“If she’s the best on the board, we’ll take her,” Cuban said. “If we have the 60th pick and she’s on the board, we still might take her.” [...] “I’ve thought about it already,” he said. “Would I do it? And right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know until you give someone a chance. And it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it. If we had tryouts, I would have no problem inviting her to work out and see how she did. No problem whatsoever.”

If Cuban were to follow through, this would certainly make the NBA’s Summer League a must-watch event.

As for the 6-8 star, Brittney Griner tweeted that she’d be up for the challenge: “I would hold my own! Lets do it.”

It would be a good look for the WNBA and women sports in general. They need more recognition.

  • spit hot fiyah

    she would get murdered

  • http://www.facebook.com/devin.williams1 Devin Williams

I hope he does. Give the “girl” a chance!

  • Steve

It would be a publicity stunt gone wrong! She would get obliterated on both ends of the court!

  • NMM

a women in NBA clothing. Check her for testosteron before you invest money. In my opinion, she is a dopper.

  • JC

I would hate to be one of the guys playing her, how would you ever get yourself to drive on her or play tight D? it just doesn’t work..

  • pposse

you gotta do what you gotta do, these are professionals. Hell, in high schools across the countries girls join the wrestling team every year, which is a lot more physical and guys are forced to compete against them.

  • DannyAingesBarber

I have my doubts that she would be able to compete, but I would love to see her given the chance. She definitely deserves the opportunity.

  • Initbruv

Why not? Have you ever played a talented chick at basketball? Competitive side kicks in and you have no problem with it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509819249 Gaurav P.

Why? Just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean you can’t play defense.

  • Fat Lever

This is Cuban Sensationalism at it’s best. Cubes never met a mic he didn’t like.

  • http://www.facebook.com/starkpwnsyou Joshua Maria Peter Bautista

Bruce Bowen would come out of retirement for this.

  • initbruv

Well then she’d fit in with the NBA players perfectly. I’ve never seen her play but she is a big broad.

  • JM

People say KD is too skinny, Griner is an inch shorter and 27 pounds lighter than KD and she’d be playing as a big. Would be a disaster on both ends of the floor.

  • bike

Pure publicity stunt. She wouldn’t even start on most major Div 1 teams.

  • Sizzle

Nice that he gives her recognition but NO chance she makes the team unless she is relegated to be a human victory cigar ala Brian Scalabrini when he was on the Celtics. Griner, I don’t care that she is 6’8″, would absolutely get Murked in the NBA. She is dominant in women’s basketball, but her size doesn’t do anything for her in the NBA. She is by far too slow for the NBA game. So give her a tryout (if you’re serious), but then send her on her way to the WNBA where she likely be an all-time great. NOT hating by any means, just being realistic.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

This is just to keep his name in the headlines. Griner, Diggins and Elena Delle Donne are the future of the WNBA.

  • Max

She’s probably 3 inches shorter than KD.

  • Max

    Who’s talking about a chick?

  • Max

    No way it’s happening.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you guys realize in the NBA she’d be a Small Forward right? Cuban would do this for the money. She is nowhere close to being good enough to see minutes on an NBA court. Not even kinda.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Griner is 6’8″ – Kevin Durant is 6’11″

  • TR

Mark Cuban gets more and more reckless the further the Mavs fall out of the playoff picture

  • Dagger

Yeah, because when a woman is big and strong, she’s got to be a man . . . right?

  • Max

lol, chill out, I’m just playing.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

uhm, why? the majority of men at that level would destroy her.
    .
when women got on the court with us, even at a much lower level where there is no money or livelihood’s involved, we would exploit that match up. if it’s one or nine out of 10 player’s on the court, they should be treated like player’s on the court. Not woman.

  • Jesse Laker

I would like to see her in the post with Lebron. Can she handle getting physical with dudes like Metta World Peace? No way. She wouldn’t last 1 playoffs quarter.

  • patrick

is griner 100% female tho? or is she trans-gendered? will she clarify already?

  • patrick

how do you know he’s 6’11? i think that mite be a myth

  • Redd

The heck are the parenthesis for?

Because she could stomp on you she’s no longer a girl? Wtf, shut up moron.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well most player’s around him say he’s 6’11″ or 7’0″

    .

    his teammates say 6’11″

    .

    http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/01/31/wait-kevin-durant-is-how-tall/

  • Redd

Is Donne better than Diggins u think?

  • 23

LeBron is 6’8″ maybe 6’9″ . Have you seen Durant standing next to Bron?

  • Redd

Thank you, just saw an idiot say that up top.

Apparently if a woman is better at a male dominant sport than most males then she has to be a man.

  • Anthony Dixon

You guys are not looking at the big picture. smh

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

why did people vote this stupid comment up?

  • TR

Saw him play court side once, he’s at least 6’10″. Standing next to Demarcus Cousins he was either the same height or slightly taller.

  • Hingle McCringleberry

That girl is pretty tall. Is she from the Amazon or something?

  • Redd

Sadly it’s true, I don’t believe it to be as simple as she’s a woman, but compared to most men at her position, she’s pretty light work.

  • http://twitter.com/DPisWill DePaul Williams

He’s taller than Dwight Howard, so Durant is a legit 6’11 and some change…

  • RKJ92

LeBron is 6’7 no shoes, and 6’8 in shoes

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

cause she has a deeeep voice lol

    @755d28f5c7e6b1af2fbe349b179fe220:disqus
@disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus I have a picture of Durant that I will post as soon as I grab my laptop, of Durant RIGHT next to 6’10 Serge Ibaka and he’s significantly taller about an inch or 2 taller, I think its pretty safe to assume Durant is about 6’11 – 6’11 1/2 range as nbk had pointed out.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

of course it’s not because she’s a woman. It’s because for 6’8″, she has a woman’s physique. Her coordination is closer to Gheorghe Muresan than it is to an NBA player of a comparable size.
    .
it’s not because she’s a woman, but by being a woman, she wasn’t blessed with the physical gifts that we are as men. Her advantage against other woman is her size. Despite all the jokes, she’s not a man. and she isn’t a big enough woman to make up for that.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

yup. they do get scared when you drive. other then that theyre competitive

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    the media loves a trainwreck

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

can she hang with luke walton?

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

can she even hang with luke walton?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

at least you are consistent tho

  • bike

If, although remote, the nba can conceivably draft a woman, could the WNBA draft a guy? If not, is it discrimination?

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Dang that’s tough. If I had to choose I give the slight edge to Skylar.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Donne is 6’5″, just shot 45% from 3. (50-40-90 to be even more specific).
    .
Donne is the second best woman in college basketball.

    Quotations, not parenthesis.

  • KingBenjamin

Anyone who thinks that Griner can compete in the NBA is an IDIOT! She’s 6 foot 8 inches tall and is slow as hell and would have no chance to keep up with the pace of the NBA. At 6 foot 8 that would mean she would be playing the small forward position and be going up against players like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony. She would get completely slaughtered by all of those players even the scrub small forwards of the NBA.

NBA is popularly known as “NO BOYS ALLOWED” and should also be known as “NO WOMEN ALLOWED”.

  • Redd

    thanks

  • Do Work

what has griner done to deserve the opportunity to play in the nba?

  • Redd

Yeah most people say Donne is better, I ask cause I don’t watch much College Hoops, men or women.

  • Redd

Aren’t they both 2s? Never heard of Donne til’ recently.

  • Redd

Yeah it’s unrealistic, now if she was 1 of those super buff weight lifting women, I’d say she could very well make the NBA.

  • BurgerKing

And let the idiotic and old ass “man jokes” begin.. *rolls eyes*

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

lol it was a joke nbk jeeze

  • Yung Slimm

    very true lol…

  • Yung Slimm

A good notion on Cuban’s behalf, but not likely to happen since the women have their own league now. Besides I would loved for it to have had happened back when it was Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo, Sheryl Swoops, and Cynthia Cooper all in the fold, to do it now would be you know kind of like a joke… And could you imagine her getting dunked on by Lebron James, Dwight Howard, and Kobe Bryant now I’ll pay to the see that lol…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

she looks like shell smack dirk if he does a one legged fadeaway instead of passing her the ball..bad idea.

  • initbruv

No joking around in the politically correct world of the comment board threads.

  • JML-G

i love basketball and with that said – i f*cking hate WNBA, it makes me sick when in summer in turn on NBA TV and them manly girls be ballin there.. society needs to f off with that equal shit.. this is sports.. if she gets chance to get drafted in the NBA, i demand that Michael Ruffin gets a deal in the WNBA, so can see his ridiculous fouling ass getting MVP of that league and getting inducted into Hall Of Fame for bein GOAT WNBA player (and probably WOAT NBA player).. #rantover

  • initbruv

Lol just settle down jml. Nobody is making you watch the WNBA.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

No, it’s not. Is affirmative action racism too? Should bestiality be legalized if homosexuals have the right to marry? No and no. All three are stupid questions.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

not comparing bestiality to homosexuality in any way, shape or form, btw… just pointing out how ridiculous that would be. Sorry if it came across that way.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

You’re probably a white male, which explains your obliviousness about everything not pertaining to white men. And the two jokes weren’t even funny.

  • Tupac

    good point.

  • initbruv

I agree the jokes weren’t funny. And just calm down with the personal sh*t. All I said is that comment boards are politically correct. Nothing to argue there.

  • Tupac

    ._.

  • snasty10

Sounds like the sequel to Juwanna Man

  • initbruv

And really it makes sense that comment boards are politically correct because we all don’t know each other so we don’t know each others’ real opinions or personalities.

  • bike

Maybe it was a stupid question but your analogies are equally lacking.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

What about polygamy though? I think the incest and bestiality arguments are horrible, but I think people who want to have multiple adult spouses are getting shafted.
What’s the real argument against this by folks who support gay marriage? I need to hear something.

  • initbruv

Do you really think that it’s the supporters of gay marriage that would be up in arms against polygamy? I think a lot of people are against polygamist compounds because of how the young girls are brainwashed/forced to marry and sleep with old men based on horsesh*t religious claims. But other than that it will just be the same people who say that marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman I would guess.

  • The Philosopher

Barring injury, will go down as the greatest of all times…

  • Kabelion

How skinny was Tayshaun Prince his rookie year? I only ask because she plays just like he does. Her entire game is Tayshaun Prince. Not kidding. Long arms. Slight build. Mid range jumper. Good passer. Doesn’t turn the ball over. If she improves her handle, gains another 20 pounds (she’s at 200) I can see her being a Tashaun prince like stopper. As for her getting dunked on, everyone in the league gets dunked on, repeatedly. Show me someone that doesn’t get posterized and I’ll show you the last guy on the bench that never gets in the game.

  • KBM

I have only seen a few highlights of Griner, but is Tay really the best comparison for her? Isn’t she the most dominant post presence offensively and defensively by a long shot?

  • RKJ92

Tayshaun Prince was also faster, more athletic, could guard 3 positions, and shoot 3′s, so this is a horrible comparison, BODY wise they are the same but HELL no in anything other then that — this is like comparing Glen Davis to Shaquille O’neal just no… lol

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

This is a joke. IMO, nothing against gender issues, more on the Mavericks. I hope this is not some strategy to motivate Dallas to get into playoffs.

  • AndyK415

Totally agree. The NBA is way too fast.

  • sim888

She has a pretty cool story, committed to UCONN, quit basketball for personal reasons to stay closer to home, resurfaced at Delaware as a volleyball player…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

While I respect it a lot, marriage itself is a conservative/traditional institution… The gay rights movement is about a lot more than marriage. HRC, which seems to have the most clout right now, is an institution run by conservative white men who actually voted against equality in the workplace for transgendered people. The scumbags there also support legislation that would cut social security benefits to single people (including single gay people)–so long as married gay people are included along with the married couples getting those benefits. They’re idiots, rich idiots… the LGBT movement can and is doing way better than that.

Just thought I’d clear that up. My argument against polygamy is that, in practice, it’s more often than not just coercion and abuse of women and under-age girls. It’s not a problem of having multiple partners; it’s a problem with patriarchy.

  • Jesus Shuttlesworth

“And it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”
pretty sure manu ginobili got drafted 57th ya turkey

  • JML-G

exactly! and if she would, crazy young mothers would protest at all game arenas, bout how those macho ballers threat poort Brittney and dont let her ”just play the friendly game”

  • kabelion

His first year, he couldn’t guard anything really. That’s my point. And no he wasn’t more athletic. He wasn’t touching the top of the backboard, he was getting juked out of his draws guarding ones, most twos and had Ben to clean up his mess. He improved by the end of the season. his second year is when he really put it together. He also had no choice but to shoot the three because he couldn’t go down low, because he wasn’t big enough. I’m a pistons fan, I watched the games. This is the most apt comparison there is. Glen davis can’t make a dunk by himself on a fast break, so, comparing him to shaq, whom is 7 inches taller and 80 pounds heavier was just silly.

  • kabelion

If Tayshaun played womens ball, at 6’9. He would dominate. But be fouled, triple teamed and he’d have to pass. He wouldn’t be able to take girls to the hole like everyone says because he’d constantly get called for a charge for running over a bunch of girls that are 5’9″ to 6″3″. And when he would get to play someone around his height, (Imani Stafford-Mcgee, Anna Prins,Kelsey Bone etc) He’d still be fronted by another player that was 6’5″ so that he’s being double teamed at all times. This is what Griner has had to deal with for 4 years. People fouling her and being in the way when she made moves towards the basket. Ask yourself a simple question, how do you split a triple team without fouling? Her game improved by training with the womens olympic team, I think playing in the summer league or even training with the guys in a nba environment will do nothing but increase her physicality and skill level. I wouldn’t be surprised if she made a D-League roster after the WNBA season was over. Instead of going overseas, she stays stateside.

Good point. Seems like if we expand marriage beyond the traditional man/woman narrative, then it should be open to all possible combinations of human union. Right?

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I can see that argument. But isn’t that easily remedied by the laws we have on the books that set minimum ages for marriage?
I ask these questions because I think there’s been this idea that gay marriage is about denying people a right and that’s just not something we do in America. However, we do deny people certain rights when we decide that’s what we want to do.
Personally, as a Christian, I don’t believe that gay marriage is supported in the eyes of God. However, I am not comfortable with telling homosexual adults they must abide by Christian doctrine when we fail to that with heterosexual adults. After all, fornication, adultery and divorce are all legal. But, because of my beliefs, I’m leery of being a vocal advocate for gay marriage because it seems to be tied to the idea that gay marriage is “right” and saying it isn’t is a sign of homophobia. I don’t agree with that. I find it to be a complicated issue where I’m constantly considering and revising my thoughts.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Actually, your more conservative religious folks used to support polygamy back in the day. It was the other side that had a problem, often because of the coercion involved in it. But that can be addressed with laws we have on the books about the age differences allowed in relationships.

  • initbruv

Yeah I have no beef with polygamy as long as it doesn’t involve coercion of women (obviously). I don’t think most people that would support gay marriage would oppose it either, our government is not supposedly a Christian government so we don’t need to limit ourselves to one church’s idea of marriage.

  • Kadavour

    LMAO

  • Gman

agreed, kurt thomas would hold her in the post. lol

  • RKJ92

    Ok
    1) your not a pistons fan because Tayshaun Prince never guarded 1′s in his life, he guarded 2′s 3′s and 4′s so I HIGHLY doubt you ever watched him play a game if your stating this
    2) Tayshaun in his prime had a mid 30 inch vertical
    3) Tayshaun was a GREAT defender
    4) Tayshaun had a choice to play both inside and out BECAUSE HE COULD not because he was forced too.. I mean wth? where do you get your facts from?
    5) Glen Davis is 4 Inches shorter and 35 pounds less, but I compared them because you could consider Glen as Brittany and Shaq as any other NBA sf,pf,c up against her.. she would get demolished..

  • KABELION

    1. Actually, I am a Pistons fan and have been since before Tripucka was traded from the team so cut it out. He did, in fact, guard 1′s his rookie year. I don’t know if you know this, but people get switched onto other people doing pick and rolls, so everyone ends up guarding everyone at some point.
    2. Tayshaun in his prime. (5 years in the league) Okay. 30 inch vertical. If you’d seen the videos of her online in high school, you’d see that she did too.
    3. She can learn to be be an even better defender than she is and perhaps, with work on her lateral quickness, get to the level of Tayshaun defensively.
    4. Who was Tayshaun posting up his rookie year? Rarely was he. And I get my facts from watching the games. Which you obviously didn’t. It’s okay to admit you’re wrong, it’s just a discussion about a player you don’t give a damn about and don’t watch.
    5. So, Shaq is 6’10″? No one in their right mind thinks that Glen Davis is 6’9″. No one. Dude is 6’6″ in shoes unless he grew 3 inches since his rookie year.
    6. People keep saying she would get posted up and banged down low. That’s not where she’d be. She’d be a perimeter defender and the team would continue to play zone.
