PJ Carlesimo Says Andray Blatche is Out of Shape

The Brooklyn Nets, led in part by Andray Blatche’s 20 points and 12 rebounds, won an otherwise meaningless game against the Washington Wizards last night. Still, Nets head coach PJ Carlesimo called out the big fella for a lack of conditioning. Per the NY Daily News: “Dray was the only one I felt bad about (playing a lot of minutes). And frankly, he needs conditioning,’ Carlesimo said. ‘So I thought it was okay. He needs some conditioning and he obviously wants to play against (the Wizards) because he played there. … We thought Dray was going good and the conditioning is good for him.’ This is less of an issue considering Blatche won’t play so much in the playoffs. But the 26-year-old admitted he wasn’t ready for the heavy minutes he got because most of the starters rested Monday. ‘It’s surprising when you play 37 minutes compared to playing 12,’ he said. ‘It did catch me off guard. When you play 12 minutes, and then you go out there for 37 minutes, it caught me a little bit.’”

“PJ Carlesimo Says Andray Blatche is Out of Shape” No sh*t

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

In other news, water is wet.

Nah, in Dray’s defense, there is no substitute for playing actual game minutes. You can’t expect him to be as fit as someone that’s been playing starters minutes all season.

  • Max

But you do expect a pro to be in good shape, something that’s questionable about him.

  • Dymez

This is something you REALLY don’t want said about you in mid-April.

  • spit hot fiyah

so that’s why i have to dry myself after i shower? who knew

  • shockexchange

Andray Blatche needs to go through Mike Rice’s “dodgeball workout.” That will get him into shape.

  • Anthony Dixon

if 20 and 12 is outa shape, then i’ll take it.

I don’t think saying he “needs conditioning” and saying he’s “out of shape ” are the same thing. But you’re right, it’s easy to assume the latter when you have a history of being out of shape.

DFrance wants to know is the Shockexchange has considered writing “The Blatche Rules: Keys to getting Andray Blatche to stay fit all season”

  • bike

“‘It’s surprising when you play 37 minutes compared to playing 12,’ he said.”

It’s hard to be Andray Blatche. It’s very hard.

The only benefit of conditioning is maintaining/getting into shape. I’m curious to what you think this really means

  • 23

    Remember its against Washington.

  • ds121

be real. dray has spent his entire career being out of shape.

  • shockexchange

LOL. You’ve just outshocked the Shock Exchange. He has a feeling the “Blatche Rules” will be so long that he may get carpal tunnel syndrome in the process.

  • Redd

In response, Blatche told PJ he’s out of shape.

  • Thetruth55

get that out of here washington with wall are almost as good as the nets

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

For example, Usain Bolt is in great shape to run a 100m dash, but he’d be extra winded if he rana marathon. That doesn’t mean Bolt is out of shape, he’d just need to improve his conditioning. Blatche is in shape relative to what his role has been this season. He’s been playing 12 minutes a game, that’s what his body is accustomed to. You triple his minutes one game and expect him not to struggle?

  • 23

Your saying being “almost as good as the nets”, as if its a good thing.

  • 23

Usain bolt isn’t in shape to run a marathon. blatche may be in good shape for an average man. But for nba standards, there’s no defense for his lack of conditioning

  • danpowers

for a team in rebuild mode it is

  • danpowers

pj carlesimo is out of shape

  • 23

Ok that only strengthens my original point. having a good game against a team in “rebuild” mode isn’t something to be content with. It’s kind of a lose-lose type situation.

  • Anthony Dixon

49 wins is not a good thing?

  • Thetruth55

4th seed is good. what planet do u live on?

  • 23

49 wins isn’t anything special. It’s average. The east blows we all know this.

  • Anthony Dixon

it may not be special but from where the Nets came from it is.

  • AnOldCoach

Poor choice of words by PJ. He was saying that Blatche had not had enough minutes this season to be conditioned for a sudden 37 minute stint. Blatche is in great shape.
