Post Up: Streak Busters

Chicago ends New York’s 13-game win streak.

by Peter Walsh

Bulls 118 (43-35), Knicks 111 (51-27) F/OT

For the second time in two weeks, Chicago defeated the hottest team in the NBA. First, the Bulls beat the Heat to snap their 27-game win streak and last night, the Bulls held on to beat the Knicks in overtime to end their 13-game win streak. New York raced out to a hot start and opened up a quick 17-point lead but the Bulls came back to cut the deficit to five at the half. New York once again built their lead to double-digits in the third–this time going up by 15–but once again, the Bulls didn’t relent. Down 82-80 at the end of three, Chicago tied the game up after Luol Deng hit the first bucket of the fourth. Over the next six minutes, the Bulls went on a 19-8 run to give them a a 99-90 lead. The Bulls failed to score a basket the rest of regulation, only hitting free throws. New York continued to chip away and tied the score at 105 thanks to two Carmelo Anthony free throws with 14.5 seconds left. The Knicks had a chance to end the game in regulation but Melo’s last second shot drew iron and the teams went to overtime. Nate Robinson opened the fourth with a three-point play and it was over from there. Robinson scored eight points in the extra session to finish with a season-high 35 points and gave the Bulls their final push while the Knicks ran out of gas. Jimmy Butler scored 22 points and grabbed 14 boards and Luol Deng scored 15 points and grabbed 8 boards. Melo scored 36 (13-34 shooting) and grabbed 19 boards, J.R. Smith scored 28 points and grabbed 14 boards and Ray Felton scored 19 and dropped 6 dimes.

Ghost has been getting me through the last month of the season and this has been on repeat. His next album, Twelve Reasons To Die, drops April 16th and sounds amazing. Preview / read about it here. Buy it here.

Thunder 116 (58-21), Warriors 97 (45-34)

Kevin Durant scored 31 points, grabbed 10 boards and dropped 8 dimes to to lead the Thunder in a romp over the Warriors. With the win, OKC regained the Western Conference’s best record. The Thunder ended this one in the third quarter behind a 22-5 run that made it a 94-73 game entering the fourth. Andrew Bogut left the game with what is being called an ankle sprain. His status for tonight’s game against the Lakers is unknown. Russ Westbrook finished with 18 points, 9 dimes and 6 turnovers while Kevin Martin scored 23 off the pine. Steph Curry led the Warriors with 22 points and 7 assists.

Despite the Bulls being less than 100% I honestly believe they will be a tough out for any of the top teams in the east come playoff time.

  • Max

    Except for Miami.

if the Bulls can only play teams with a 10+ game winning streak, they win the ship.

i think it’s more Big Bird / Elmo

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I might catch flack for this but I don’t think Miami even wants to see them in the 2nd round. Even without Rose the Bulls would push Miami to their limits. I think Miami would still win the series but I’m sure they would like to avoid the Bulls if possible.

Chicago may have found their starting 2 in Jimmy, kid keeps getting better and he one of those players that does a little bit of everything.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Remember when Mike D’Antoni tried to convince the world that Nate Robinson wasn’t very useful as a basketball player?

  • LakeShow

They could push it to 6 or 7 in my estimation.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

Again, the Bulls with Rose only got one game off Miami and that was before they learned how to hoop together.
I respect the Bulls, but Nate Robinson is their only creator off the bounce.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I hear you. I’m just saying a wounded animal tends to fight harder so if I was Miami I would be mindful.

  • LakeShow

    No.
    I’m sure your right, but I don’t.
During the Knicks tenure he kind of glued him to the bench or something?
Nate Robb could have lit it up in that system.
What makes you think he thought of Robinson in that way but embraced Barbosa?

  • LakeShow

The Bulls play awesome defense with or without D-Rose, so they still match up better than the Knicks imo. While Hinrich, Hamilton, and Nate aren’t wizards at passing the ball they are all solid. And Joakim Noah is a top 3 passing big man in the L.
So they don’t need a creator as much as it seems. Maybe Rose will come back and give them 20 mins a game :/
We aren’t saying they will beat them, just that it will be a competitive series.

  • LakeShow

JR Smith lock for 6th man now?

Jarrett Jack is my 2nd choice.

    Crawford fell off.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I understand what you’re saying, and maybe you all are right. But, if they could only win one game when totally healthy and with Miami walking the ball up the floor, how will they win two or three games without Rose and with Noah hobbled with Miami having the best offense in the League?
Don’t you see how this doesn’t connect logically?

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

I’d say this is spot on.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/savagemuzicgroup T-Ray

You know what Allenp screw your logic *kicks dirt and walks away in shame*

  • LakeShow

    I do.
But it’s not like the rest of the games the Heat slaughtered them. They were very competitive.
I could easy see this series going 6 games is what I was saying, but your right that your POV makes more sense haha.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nate Robinson is a PG. Barbosa is a SG.
    .
D’Antoni does not like PG’s that play like SG’s.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This is why the Knicks will not win in the playoffs….

    .

“Carmelo Anthony had 53 touches against the Bulls on Thursday. He attempted 34 shots and passed the ball 12 times, with only five of those passes coming in the second half, when he touched the ball 27 times. Anthony’s last assist came at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.”
    .
And this is also proof of Carmelo actively trying to get the scoring title.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And this is what i was talking about yesterday, when i said a solid defensive player on Melo makes all the difference, • Anthony was 6-for-17 when guarded by Jimmy Butler, including 2-for-10 outside five feet. He was 4-for-10 in the first half against Luol Deng, and Deng didn’t guard him at all in the second half.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this year is so damn tough. i could make an argument for 4 guys

    - Smith

    - Crawford

    - Martin

    - Jack

    .

and then there is Nate Robinson and Ray Allen…..

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=smithjr01&y1=2013&p2=crawfja01&y2=2013&p3=martike02&y3=2013&p4=jackja01&y4=2013&p5=allenra02&y5=2013&p6=robinna01&y6=2013

  • LakeShow

You gotta put Ryan Anderson on there if your going to bring up Robinson and Allen.

JR has gotten more time to show off and he’s taken advantage. He has had some BIG games for them this year. More big games, and being able to be “the man” when the other guys went down is why I give Smith the nod.

  • LakeShow

    Co-sign

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Ryan Anderson is the best reserve on the 4th worst team in the NBA…….i do not find that impressive.

    .

JR has also been the least consistent and efficient player of the whole group. And it’s not even close. Starting and Ending the Season well is why Smith is getting so much attention. Really the other than those big games…the only thing Smith has on anybody else is he plays 34 minutes a game.

  • LakeShow

    Ryan Anderson’s year as a 6th man >> Ray Allen’s
    That’s a fact.

And I didn’t say he deserved 6th men contention just that if you are going to mention Allen you HAVE to also have Anderson in there.

It’s between Smith, Jack and Crawford. It will probably be Smith.

Jarrett Jack has won me over with his consistency though, he is probably the true 6th man. I won’t be upset between Jack and Smith though.

  • danpowers

they constantly double teamed him. almost any shot he made came on 1 on 1 coverage which he hit at a high % regardless who guarded him. the annoying thing was what you mentioned above. he was balling for the scoring crown instead of making the right plays.

the decisive stretch tho that allowed the bulls to take over the game when the knicks already had them in a comfortable double digit lead into the third was a collective letdown by the knicks. arrogant body language and extremely sloppy plays by all knicks led by felton led to a couple of turnovers on which the bulls scored. when they led too comfortable they just started to act and play conceited. thats some sort of loser mentality. im more concerned about that than melo trying to get some stupid individual title. in the playoffs he def. will pass the ball out of double teams more often.

plus, the knicks had absolutely no big on the roster. they were all out with injuries and they are expected to be back come playoff time. another reason that to me speaks against a letdown in the playoffs.

  • danpowers

no its not. smith. anything else would be a bad joke. dont give me that knick-color blindness bullsh*t. he played the biggest role for his team of each of them. i thought that he lost the claim for that title during the rough stretch through the middle of the season but the way he recovered from that should make him be a log for that award.

  • danpowers

no, sir. win shares. and check the per 36 minutes stats. plus: least efficient scorer, not least efficient player as he does more than just scoring.

  • danpowers

depends on if miami comes into that series on a winning streak or not…

  • danpowers

jack had a very rough stretch in march, smith during the second third of the season, i dont know about crawford but clippers fans didnt speak well about him lately which lets me guess that he is going through that lately, martin kind of regressed constantly after a very strong start shooting wise. so consistency is not really an atribute for this years 6th man class.
having said that id take smith for the big role he had to fill in and also by how he delivered.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

STATS aren’t everything. Allen has been the 6th man for the best team in the league. And he’s been a big part of that. So he deserves to be at least mentioned. Ryan Anderson has put up big stats for a terrible team. Essentially a team whose need for a good 6th man is non existent.
    .
I have Jack as the 6th man of the year also. But i firmly believe that 6th man is reserved for teams who need their 6th man to win games, not to put up stats.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

HE IS SO INEFFICIENT THIS SEASON SHOOTING THE BALL…..HE WOULD HURT THE PISTONS.
    .
it’s not cut and dry at all. of course you feel that way, of course. and of course JR Smith is going to finish top 3, and is probably the favorite to win. But the argument for other guys is just fine.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

What puts him in this conversation is his scoring and defense. — but his scoring is awfully inefficient.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you aren’t making him sound any better.

    - “they constantly double teamed him. almost any shot he made came on 1 on 1 coverage which he hit at a high % regardless who guarded him. the annoying thing was what you mentioned above. he was balling for the scoring crown instead of making the right plays.”

    - if he’s being double teamed, then why is this a FACT,

—”Carmelo Anthony had 53 touches against the Bulls on Thursday. He attempted 34 shots and passed the ball 12 times, with only five of those passes coming in the second half, when he touched the ball 27 times. Anthony’s last assist came at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.”

    .
I never said anything about why they lost the game. So you getting defensive about that is pointless.

  • danpowers

“HE IS SO INEFFICIENT THIS SEASON SHOOTING THE BALL…..HE WOULD HURT THE PISTONS.”

throughout a long stretch of the season. you already said he started strong and finishes the season strong. when hes playing smart, hes really strong. he also won many games for the knicks, also in bad shooting games of his. among 6th man candidates only martin has a higher win shares than jr, that tells more about his play this year than his fg%.
the only reason to me to not give him the award is because that man started to wear leggins

  • danpowers

right. he often plays in a way that lets me lose hair and turn grey and in the same games he clanged 10 in a row after stupid dribbles that end where they started but then he makes the game winner or clutch plays to win these games.

that didnt always work, so many of those games were losses, too. but he didnt play like that during the first 30 or so or the last 14 games. at least not in all these games. id say as a guy who watched all of his games that he brought us knicks fans more joy than anger. and boy, he caused me alot of anger. that team would be lower in the standings without him.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

44 games is half the season. It’s not a half season award. Which is the argument against him.

  • danpowers

i didnt say that smith only had one rough month.
take some games off that 52 games, as he also hit game winners and made decisive plays on both ends of the floor when he had horrible shooting nights. giving your team a W is more valuable to me than putting up a nice fg%. tho it is also clear and just logic that most of these Ws wouldve come a little less thrilling with smarter play down the stretch instead of fighting a game back that slid in the first place. but still, generating wins is what its all about. only martin was better in that among the 6th men pool, tho his role is a bit smaller than smith’s is on the knicks.

  • danpowers

you said “this is why the knicks wont win in the playoffs” thats why i said why the knicks actually lost that last game. sure, his bad shot selection was also a factor yesterday. but also consider the knicks will have their bigs back in the playoffs which makes them a tough team to beat. and as if melo didnt have any good defenders against him during his recent streak. its more him beating himself than others beating him.

you also had to wait quite a bit till you were able to “prove” your playoff theory. anthony has been terrific since he returned back healthy. just take his game against the thunder, washington, miami, etc and you couldnt argue that way.

    in other words:

  • danpowers

he was scoring inefficiently in most of these 44 games but was still able to win his team games every once in a while. i also had him out of my 6th man of the year thoughts but looking bad the season wasnt that bad at all. and yeah, that recent stretch of games leaves a pretty positive subjective mark

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The majority of this season, the Knicks were a .500 ball club. Take off your incredibly biased glasses for 2 minutes of your life. Smith is not the clear cut 6th man. Get over it. Nobody said its wrong to vote for him or think he should win. What is wrong is how you act and get defensive about ANYTHING related to the Knicks. Like right now, because I don’t agree with your stupid assertion that its obvious who should win the award (strictly because its a Knick, might I add. You wouldn’t say this about any other player or award, and you know it) It’s getting unbearable. It really really is.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They won’t win in the playoffs because their star player is overtly selfish and sucks at defense. That and a plethora of other reasons.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And I’ve been arguing he is never going to win in the playoffs his whole f*cking career. No amount great regular season performances or however many you want to focus on are going to make me believe otherwise. Melo plays a horrible, jump shot reliant brand of basketball that I never see mounting to anything significant.

  • LakeShow

I have no problem with your perception of what the 6th man of the year award is and what they should bring a team.

I still think Smith will win it and does deserve it.

The other choices are nice, but Smith has been the best IMO.

Among shooting guards he is the:

    2nd best rebounder.

    8th best assister.

    7th in 3 pointers made.

    4th in PPG.

Tied for 3rd for games played.

    8th in steals.

    4th in double doubles.

So he has been a top 5-10 SG in every category.
    He’s been vurrry nice!

  • danpowers

kobe bryant won 5 rings with that. just a question of the right supporting cast

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Cute that you left out shooting % – where he comes in bottom of the league among players with more than 25 minutes. I am fine with people having Smith winning, but don’t be blinded by per game stats. It really doesn’t attribute much when, for literally 4 months of the year (50+ games) Smith was shooting under 40%!!!! And during that stretch the Knicks were just barely better than a .500 ball club.

  • danpowers

they probably wont win the championship but play well enough for us knicks fans to be proud of that team after all those horrible years. given there wont be some more major injury problems.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Are you this dumb on purpose? Or when a Knicks player is involved you just lose all ability to think critically? Kobe Bryant is a top 10 player all time, and one of the best 2-way players the league has ever seen. While Melo might be one of the most one-sided players we have ever watched. Their games are drastically different. They just have a similar strength. Dave yourself the future disappointment and stop thinking Melo is comparable to Kobe. Look at Dominique Wilmins if you need to find someone. .

And, No he didn’t. Kobe won 3 championships with Shaq first of all. So unless you count on New York turning Melo into a secondary player that’s just dumb.

  • danpowers

the knicks won more than 50 games this year, FACT.
he puts up the biggest numbers, also by 36 minutes. scoring was inefficient in half of the season but even then he won the knicks some games, FACT.
to me its a lucky coincidence that he is a knick. like just the icing on the cake.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And none of that is an argument for why you think he is “obviously” the 6th man

  • danpowers

sure, melo isnt in the same category as kobe. my point is just that even a team around a scorer who tends to have a bad shot selection can be successful if the supporting cast behind him fits his style of play and makes up for his weaknesses. that worked very well for the knicks more often than not this season, also against good teams.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Win Shares just represent how many of HIS TEAMS wins he contributed too. Smith had a higher win share than Jarret Jack just by being on a team with a better record. Same reason Ray Allen is 3rd and Kevin Martin is 1st. Win shares are a guess. A statistical guess, and one that doesn’t show very much.

  • danpowers

all what i said plus that is enough to me

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Seeing as how that’s never happened…..you shouldn’t be surprised that I don’t believe this to be true.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Ok? You started arguing with me to convince yourself? Or you just felt the need to express what we already knew about you? I’m confused.

  • LakeShow

I was showing his high points not his low points lol.

  • danpowers

bro almost the whole nba world has jr as the front runner. wtf is ur problem? he just happens to be a knick, thats hardly my fault

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well, 2-5 think JR is 6th man. And that took one try. So much for “almost the whole NBA world” aye? smh .

    http://m.espn.go.com/nba/story?storyId=9163997
    .
I have no problem. You are just f*cking blinded by the Knicks portion of this and every situation.

  • danpowers

im just zapping through nba games on my league pass. anytime commentators talk about that award recently you hear that they favor smith. if i wouldve known back then that youd get at me with that bs i had even written down the names, time and games lol

i just need to read the first statement:

    ” It’s between him and J.R. Smith,
similar players in that “When they’re hot … when they’re not …”
category. It comes down to Crawford’s ability to generate scoring on his
    own…”

jr smith not generating points on his own? thats what he does almost all the time especially when anthony was out. wtf. the whole team is often on his shoulders. how often did we see the knicks during that 45 games or so in the middle of the season when injuries haunted the team that the ball was just given to smith and every teammate was standing around just watching smith? n how often did he get the ball late in the shotclock after half hearted executed plays couldnt be finished properly? that adds alot to his often questionable shot selection so consider that if you point out low fg%.
if it wasnt for smith tho, the knicks wouldve been even below .500 during that stretch.
no other 6th man had that responsibilities / role this year and delivered such an output.

  • danpowers

it shows much if you actually see the guy play. more often than not the knicks stand or fall by smith’s performance. hes not accidently on a team with a better record, he actually contributes to that big time.

update on the front runner discussion: on league pass 4th qtr at 8:00 the cavs broadcasting duo “jr smith is the front runner for 6th man of the year”. just some few of many around and inside the nba having him as the front runner and to prove my assumption with one example :p

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I am aware of what he means to the Knicks and I agree with a lot of what you said. But I don’t agree that his impact was more important than Jarret Jacks, or consistently better. And many other people feel that way, and that other different guys are more deserving. There will, in fact be 4 players, minimum, who get 1st place, sixth man votes. Like it or not.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I never said he wasn’t the front runner. I said its not obvious who should win. Stop getting ahead of the argument to try and feel right. You are arguing from an extreme position. For the 10th time, I understand that Smith is probably the favorite, and don’t care if you agree with that. What is so hard to grasp?

  • danpowers

what you wrote above when i said that he is the front runner implied to me that in your oppinion he wasnt.

anyway, if he doesnt get that award then i will only take the one and only arguement as valid: his leggins

you really need to stop listening to charles barkley and sports center man ;)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I said he is probably the favorite, but that doesn’t mean just about the whole basketball world agrees. Read better, you trying to prove your right about the Knicks or Knicks related things is so god damn annoying. Just read what I say, stop over analyzing and over reacting. Just read the words.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And one article from Rob Mahoney makes you think I get my information off of TV? You are an idiot.

  • danpowers

content man, content. after that its quite unnecessary to look for more coz it says all.
nope, but being of the same oppinion as charles barkley should normally be a strong indication for being awfully wrong. n dont u call me an idiot, that douche style doesnt suit you.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if that’s what you assume, then you are an idiot. and no, that content doesn’t prove anything but an opinion. OPINION. Which doesn’t prove you right even a little bit. Yes, the Knicks have strengths that play into the match up. But no, I don’t feel like those strengths give them a shot. Rob Mahoney’s opinion is irrelevant.

  • danpowers

i took that one “Well, 2-5 think JR is 6th man. And that took one try. So much for “almost the whole NBA world” aye? smh .” and lately i saw it all over the media whenever it comes to award predictions most people have him as the 6th man.
i just proved my point man, n not even in a serious way.

i could also argue that you are doing the same (analyzing and over reacting) when i write about knicks-related articles. i dont see the team and its single players beetter than they are. i just comment on these articles coz thats whats mainly interesting to me. and yes, the positive aspects of that squad prevail the negative tangibles this year. 54 wins and the second seed as the outcome even though the injury problems cant be put together by a team and players being too bad. if it was a 40-smth season i would take “that wont translate well into the playoffs” as valid but looking at the whole picture this year i cant agree on that.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you don’t understand the difference between a prediction and a preference? if i had to bet who would win 6th man, i would bet on JR Smith. So reading an article about what people expect isn’t going to prove ANYTHING. (IN MY OPINION) Jarret Jack had a better season. And my argument is in no way absurd or ridiculous. And the sentiment that Jack was the better player this season is shared by many people (don’t confuse many with majority, as tough as the english language seems to be for you).

    .

I DON’T CARE IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH ME. Showing me OPINIONS that agree with your own doesn’t PROVE anything either. Just take that we disagree and not everyone is so overly in love with the Knicks. I didn’t say anything to you about the Knicks for you to be coming back to an old conversation YOU jumped into with your stupid ass “no its not. smith. anything else would be a bad joke. dont give me that knick-color blindness bullsh*t.” which is clearly coming from a place of Knicks-color blindness as you like to call it. CLEARLY.

that opinion is just a way to logically judge the facts that happen on court and form it into a prediction in a logic way.

honestly no team in the league has any shot against a healthy heat so all the ifs are pretty irrelevant anyway. its just that IF a team in the east WOULD have a shot its the knicks. dude, they even beat a pacers team that was competing without any big out there. put that pacer squad up yours man. in the playoffs the knicks will most likely at least have one big back and also home court advantage so i highly doubt that the pacers even have a realistic chance of playing the heat at all, if that knicks team stays something close to healthy.

that opinion doesnt make me an idiot tho but insulting me lets you look like a douche man. come on, thats below your grandeur, sir

If you don’t think any team has a shot. Then you agree with me about the Knicks. And you disagree about the Pacers. .
    That was simple.

What makes you an idiot is assuming my opinion comes from TV. That is stupid. Which, since you have been talking to me about basketball for a while now you should already know. Acting like you don’t, makes you an idiot.

come on, you know that i know that you dont have your oppinion from chuck on freaking sports center was just f*cking with you a bit in innocent fashion. i didnt knw that that would lead to an outburst like calling me an idiot lol.

i think no team has a shot realisticly but if there is one team in the east, then the knicks and not the pacers.

If what you said was sarcastic then so is what I said. Two way street.

We have established that to you not having a chance means the Knicks are the only team that can overcome such an obstacle. I get it.

dont play me that way man. it still hurts! lol

meh. they have the potential, thats what i meant. but we all know that potential doesnt necessarily equals output. i wont be suprised neither if theyd really pull an upset in that series. i just dont expect it
