Rick Carlisle Rips Into OJ Mayo for Lack of Effort

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle has not hesitated to publicly criticize OJ Mayo this season. And with the frustrating year coming to an end for the Mavs, Carlisle is still on Mayo’s case (which may have major implications this summer). Per the Dallas Morning News: “After the Mavericks’ 103-97 loss to Memphis at American Airlines Center, Carlisle noted that ‘some guys didn’t show, literally.’ Then he quickly zeroed in on Mayo. Playing against a Memphis team that allowed him to leave in free agency last summer, Mayo contributed twice as many turnovers (four) as points while shooting 1-of-6 in 28 listless minutes of court time. ‘He wasn’t into it the first half,’ Carlisle said. ‘We showed him some film at halftime where he was virtually just standing around defensively. We said, ‘Hey, we need you,’ tried to get him going a little bit. He just had a bad night; I guess I will write it off to that. But I will tell you what, if I was playing against my former team, I’d come out ready to go at them. But that’s just me.’ [...] ‘I just want to see him show up and compete. He didn’t compete tonight. With all the time that we have put into helping him develop and bringing him along, for him, in the biggest game of the year, an opportunity to be a winning team, for him to show up like he did tonight I was shocked. Sometimes guys have bad nights so make sure and put that in there, too. Look, he’s not the only guy who stunk tonight. I stunk, too. I’ve readily admitted it all year. But I’m passionate about not wanting to stink. And that’s where I have trouble reconciling things.’ [...] Mayo hurriedly dressed and left the locker room before reporters were allowed in, exiting out a back door.”

Thes are very fair public comments. Typically I don’t like coaches speaking on players in the media because the same option isn’t afforded players. But this was handled well by Carlisle.

Everything he said is true… And I really like OJ Mayo game. He’s just not focused all the time.

nothing to play for with like 3 games left, a lot of these guys are on vacation already

Sounds like Mayo’s problem is he is not passionate about not wanting to stink. Which is not an easy thing to fix. When one stinks, they have to love not wanting to stink. Hating stinking isn’t the same thing.

Mayo has been coasting on his talent since high school. If he stepped it up a couple of notches with his intensity he could be a younger version of Wade.

he coasted to averaging 18 as a rookie? damn. that’s amazing.

  • RayJr

That’s what I’m saying. That’s coasting to him. He could be better. His assists per have improved but his points haven’t since his rookie season. He coasts.

  • Lorne

That’s because he could afford to coast when he was an 18 year old hs junior. I don”t know what’s on his brain now tho.

agreed, “rips into OJ” is quite an exaggeration

Not saying it’s an excuse, but you have to wonder if all that mess that happened with his dad is still affecting him.

he just aint that nice …got a jumper can get hot from time to time nothing more or less

Mark Cuban said that players give 100% effort all the time and that reporters saying otherwise were mistaken!

maybe….he reached his physical peak at the age of 17, and isn’t one of those guys whose going to dramatically improve. The whole mystique about him was how big and advanced he was for his age. The problem is, he’s just as big and “advanced” today, as he was 4 years ago.

ssmedium specifically he was impressed with oj’s work ethic. it is in print somewhere.

this has to do w/ the fact DAL will be making big deals & they want to keep oj imo.

No excuse. It’s not like they’re getting paid minimum wage at a restaurant and there’s only 5 minutes left to close the place up so they can just hang around and do nothing. They’re athletes that are getting paid almost 50k a game, so they better show up and give it their all.

Yeah I almost thought that he went right through him. I’m gonna work on my imagination and probably stop watching “Alien” too much

Mayo seems to have always had things on his mind. Always has a little drama surrounding him.
    He’ll be fine.
