Russell Westbrook to Undergo Surgery on Right Knee

Russell Westbrook banged his knee on a collision with Patrick Beverley in Game 2, but it didn’t seem to bother him en route to the Thunder’s 105-102 win. OKC’s ironman scored 29 points on Wednesday and all seemed fine. But today, Westbrook, who’s never missed a game in his career, will undergo surgery for a meniscus tear in his right knee with no return timetable announced. Per the press release: “Westbrook suffered the injury in the second quarter of Game 2 of the First Round of the Western Conference Playoffs. The three-time NBA All-Star averaged 23.2 points (6th in NBA), 7.4 assists (7th), a career-high 5.2 rebounds and 1.77 steals (9th) in 82 games this season. ‘Our players’ health is our first and foremost concern. The Thunder’s medical team and several specialists we consulted with determined that Russell undergo a procedure to address the issue,’ said Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti. ‘We have thoroughly discussed this with Russell. Despite being the competitor and teammate that he is, he respects and understands the decision and is committed to come back even stronger. Certainly Russell is a leader and core player for this team, but we are in the midst of the playoffs and I know other players are determined to step up and contribute. We have a resilient group of players who have always taken pride in playing as a team and that approach will continue.’”

Sorry to hear that but it’s not like they were going to win the finals. Spurs vs Heat will be a more even match -up

  • LakeShow

    Wait… What?
    REALLY????
Well now Miami can easily glide to another chip.

  • Anthony Dixon

Damn… They need Eric Maynor back.

    Boom goeth the dynamite.

    Patrick Beverley is a punk.

  • havoc33

My god. Not only has Miami gathered an all world team in a weak Eastern conference, but the competition in the West keeps falling apart. If this continues, Miami will two-three more chips before you can even blink.

  • spit hot fiyah

just had this surgery this past monday. meniscus tear and recovery times differ a lot from person to person, as seen by mwp’s super quick return. i still can’t even bend my knee 90 degrees 5 days after the procedure. but russell did play the rest of the game which makes one think that the tear has to be minor (then it is also a question of were on the meniscus the tear is). when i tore mine i could hardly walk right after i heared the “pop”

  • Maxx

the league needs to suspend patrick beverley

  • Anthony Dixon

    how good is Reggie Jackson?

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Now we will see KD at his finest. But I’m sad this happened to him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

They already had it in the bag. They’re stacked. Best starting lineup and arguable best bench. And the worst part is there’s not even a decent challenger, ala Utah Jazz, Sonics, Suns, etc for MJ. I really wish we could see a decent matchup against the Heat. I mean the best the rest of the L could throw at them last year was the old man C’s with about 5 healthy players on their roster.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

But this man finished that game. Crazy genetics.

  • Marcuz

    why?

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Nah, I don’t think so. A lot of people are claiming SA has a better shot on taking out the Heat than OKC but I’m not feelin it. The Heat will run right through the Spurs imo. Don’t think we’re looking at a very interesting post season.

  • nhm

    sad news.

  • Ben

    Game, set and match Miami.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

I think this means the West is wide open, and it means we will be able to see Duncan battle LeBron with a chance for redemption for LeBron and a chance for one last glorious performance for Duncan.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the worst part is that this is a lateral tear. which, typically in the world of meniscus’ is the worst type.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

What did Artest have? Cause he came back in two weeks. Wouldn’t risk it on Westbrook since he’s apart of their foundation, but was just wondering.

  • LP

WOW. They can get to the WCF without him, but thats where it stops…. Introducing, “Kevin Durant UNLEASHED!”……..

  • analfissures

F*CK Patrick Beverley. This pisses me off so bad.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I believe he had a flap tear, but I’m not sure.

ah, crap. i’m not an okc fan, but ah, crap.

  • Blarmac

And here I was, really looking forward to watching Beverly and Westbrook duke it out the rest of the series. Damn shame.

  • Blarmac

It was a cheap reach-in, but I don’t think it’s suspend-able. Ball was in play.

  • Markus437

I was hoping he’d never miss a game, that’s one streak I’m actually sad has to end

  • robb

I don’t know about suspending him, it didn’t look like he did it on purpose but those kind of plays are dangerous, as a player he should have been more conscious of the way he goes after a steal. That was some clumsy @ss defense and when you do that, people can get injured. I’m pretty upset about this. Stupid stupid kid

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

To say Okc is done, I don’t really understand it. Are people really forgetting how GREAT Kevin Durant is?

  • robb

    sounds good

  • tealish

Nah, it’s just a stupid play with a terrible outcome. But you can’t suspend him for a play on the ball, as stupid as it was given the circumstance. Sad situation for OKC, though.

  • pposse

WOW! how many got damn knee injuries can happen in a one year span!? this is stupid

    Get well soon RW!

Agree. No chance he gets suspended

  • RayJr

In the 10+ years I’ve been following basketball I don’t ever remember any other season being as injury plagued as this one.
Reggie Jackson will step in for Westbrook and get good numbers. Everybody just stay out of KDs way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

I think the knicks could give them hell still. At least win 2.

  • pposse

Never Fear, Kevin Martin is here for the rescue attempt

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

U know of any players that have had this recently, and how long they had to be out? One of my buddies had one last year but the rehab/treatment is much different for an NBA player. Just wondering, was curious when he’d be back…I have no clue about meniscus injuries.

  • LakeShow

    Yeah your right.
    And I hate it.
    I’m hating allot today.

  • Max

Shouldn’t todays health of players be better with the advanced medical staff etc?

  • Ugh

Superstar NBA players are actually playing fewer minutes now than in years past, they travel shorter times and usually shorter distances, medical science has advanced an untold amount – but this knee injury rate is unprecedented. Why so many at this point in history?

players go for that steal all the time when a player tries to call time out, nothing dirty. just unfortunate that someone has to get hurt

    David Lee

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Both are great players, but to say that KD can’t carry a team is crazy. Still got Ibaka, Kevin Martin and other young players. They can still make the WCF.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

I think it may have to do with style of play. Super high levels of athleticism.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

    What did MWP have?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Couple months is about as close to an average guess as I can make for a lateral tear. Jeremy Lin tore his last year and I believe that was lateral. Chris Paul tore his a few years ago and it wasn’t repairable so he had it removed, that recovery was over a year before he was around 100%. MWP had the surgery 2 months ago and sat out 12 days.

  • KevinJohnsonFan

Feel bad for Russell and the team. Saw him limping after that play but didn’t think it was serious. Beverley has to get knocked down or out of tonight’s game by someone. The next round is where he’ll be missed the most.

    Here comes Kendrick Perkins.

  • KevinJohnsonFan

Dumbest comment I’ve read in a while.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Originally they said it was lateral and he would be out the whole season. I’m not sure exactly, but that obviously wasn’t right

  • pposse

click on my name and read all of my comments, i have a theory behind this

  • RayJr

    You would think huh

  • http://www.facebook.com/theron.barry Theron Barry

Kobe is probably tweeting Westbrook as we speak “Rub some dirt on it…get back in there” Get well soon RW.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Me too. Was so excited for this season. So disappointing.

  • RayJr

Solid player. He’ll be able to pick up some slack and help KD.

  • monkeyball

RW is great, but he takes several shots each game that should go to KD, who is the second most efficient scorer in the League. I think KD’s going to have a MONSTER postseason now. Still, the Heat have to be heavy favorites.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Hm. Mayybeee. I’m not seeing it though.

  • KevinJohnsonFan

Scored 20 points on that knee. Now I see why he wanted to get to Beverley right after it happened.

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Show all I’m saying is, if Lebron could carry that 07 Cavs roster to the finals why not KD?

  • phil

Patrick was matching westbrooks play and he came from the russian league halfway through the season. It was a freak accident but westbrook is on ped’s anyway and that’s karma playing it’s role.

  • The Fury

Spurs v. Miami in the Finals yeah, c’mon now…

  • mike

Reggie Jackson looks really good…. at times , looks better than a lot of starters in the league

  • Reedo

This new breed of point guards are so exciting to watch speed mixed with explosivenss but they aren’t meant to last very long, like running back in the NFL.

  • bike

Well sh*t. Was really hoping for an epic showdown between MIA and OKC with Durant being so hungry and OKC having finals experience.

Well, Kevin, hope you don’t still mind coming in second.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

NO. Chris Paul has no lateral meniscus in his right knee at all. Playing with it torn is not a big deal. It’s just not good for the future of your knee.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

This f*cking sucks. I feel so bad for Westbrook–he worked his @ss off all year and had a remarkable season, and the Thunder were looking like they were on the precipice of winning a chip. Even though he’s playing my favorite team, this dude’s become one of my favorite players in the league. Get well soon, Russ.

  • spit hot fiyah

disagree, depending on the size of the tear. if the tear is big enough it can cause enough swelling were you basically lose all your range of motion and walking normally becomes close to impossible. or loose cartilage can get stuck in the wrong place in the knee and the knee locks, making impossible to move it. once fixed through surgery, then yes, not a big deal any longer

  • spit hot fiyah

yes crazy genetics, but this is probably just a sign that the tear is minor. if the tear is major then u can have the best genetics and PEDs, u still wont be able to bend your knee

  • Albert

I was once told a theory that it’s the sneakers. Older generations played in flat tops or canvas high tops, so although ankle injuries were more likely to happen than knee injuries, injuries overall happened less because there was room to maneuver. Sneakers these days are so tight around the ankle, insulated, padded and rigid for “protection”, that the shock reverberates up the bone, to the first weak link, which is at the kneecap. the ankle is protected by all the padding but it just shoots the shock upwards especially when there is lateral movement.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

did Westbrook have knee problems during the year? I’m guessing yes, but when/where did they start?

  • LakeShow

Not saying he can’t, but that’s the high end: KD dragging his team the the Finals.
We want them going in with full steam and full power. It’s just a bummer to not have all the star power we should in the playoffs.

  • LakeShow

KD wouldn’t and won’t be as efficient without Westrbrook.

  • LakeShow

They can give em a run, just not beat them.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Swelling wouldn’t occur until rest. his knee was probably in considerable pain in the morning, not during the game. but Yea if he had a flap tear, it would have really bothered him. But from what I’ve read it’s not. I was just referring to the injury he has, not meniscus tears in general. My bad

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Nope, this is actually the first injury of his life. No joke

  • spit hot fiyah

ok, i understand. because if tear was majo,r swelling could start as soon as he sad down for a time out

  • Redd

This is what I jumped to right away, Reggie is pretty damn underrated and is nice.

  • Dagger

Well that settles it for me. Never has a season been ruined more thoroughly by injury. This is terrible.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah that’s my bad for giving such a blanket statement. Thanks for helping clarify

  • http://twitter.com/stepfdelaghetto Stepfan Raiford

Agreed. D-Rose come back. The game really needs you.

  • shockexchange

Why would Beverly lower his shoulder into Westbrook’s knee like that? The Shock Exchange can think of a hundred scenarios that could come from that maneuver, and none of them are positive.

  • patrick

i suggest high-powered jacuzzi jet massage on knee for him..to see if that does anything

  • davidR

bodie! is it just me, or does he look like russ?

  • Drig

If any season deserved an asterix, it’d be this season……First Kobe, now Russ. I just hope Duncan can stay healthy. Watching him and Pop is the only reason I have left to watch the POs.

BTW, ain’t this like the 10th star player to not play in the POs this season? SMDH.

  • eZ

So…….how ’bout that james harden trade?

  • Max

He has never missed a game before.
The injury came on a play where he was hit.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the training has also advanced. the speed the players run, the height the players jump, the torque they put on their knees has never been like this during any other era.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you have a source for this theory? i would love to read more about it.

  • roscoe

super disappointing for all nba fans.

a 2nd finals w/ okc/mia would have been something and now we won’t see it.

    i am disappointed.

  • Lloyd

Did the doctor’s give you an estimated recovery time?

If Indiana can get by New York, I give them a shot. I think they’ve had the best shot in the East. And Chicago isn’t going to lay down either.

    true

  • spit hot fiyah

he said about 2 weeks before walking normally, but he said it can differ a lot from person to person

  • ‘Bout It

Can Russell really be deemed a “person” though? He seems like more of an “extraterrestrial” to me. There’s no precedent for the recovery time of Russell’s.

  • robb

The shock that goes up to the knee has nothing to do with padding, it’s all about the kind of cushionging the soles and insoles have combined with the style of playing. Players today are stronger and more athletic than ever. If the shoes are tight around the foot or not that doesn’t affect the joints impact wise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/evan.boland Evan Boland

Maybe Chicago won’t lay down, but they’re going down none the less. It won’t be close. And I don’t give Indiana a shot. But we shall see. I hope they’ll prove me wrong.

  • TR

Well just from his freshman year of HS (when he was a varsity player) until now, thats 10 plus years. Still pretty wild.

  • TR

Kind of a bummer that no matter who wins the ship it’ll be diminished a bit because of this injury. For the record the heat had it on lock anyway.
