Ty Lawson Says Nuggets Could Beat Miami in the NBA Finals

Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson has a great deal of confidence in his team. So much so, that Lawson envisions the Nuggets shocking the world by reaching the NBA Finals and taking down the Miami Heat. Per Fox Sports: “Lawson vows the Nuggets (50-24) ‘can get to the NBA Finals’ and win. Never mind if their Finals foe could be the mighty Heat. ‘I think so,’ Lawson said when asked if the Nuggets could beat the Heat for the title. ‘They beat us twice early in the year when we weren’t really in sync. We were still trying to find ourselves. So I feel like if we play them now it would be a better game and we could actually beat them.’ Denver did give the Heat two good games in November, losing 119-116 at Miami and 98-93 at home. So what makes Lawson think the Nuggets could turn the tide if the teams met in the Finals? ‘Teamwork, and we could throw a lot of people at LeBron (James) and (Dwyane Wade), and not just one person,’ Lawson said. ‘We can throw (Andre) Iguodala and (Danilo Gallinari) and Corey Brewer and Wilson (Chandler). You can throw so many people at (them). And then we have so many weapons.’”

    roscoe agrees.

DEN has no conscious & no one wants to play the nut-factory-gym in the playoffs.

  • Redd

Yea Nuggets are a team I’m sure no one in the West wants to see.

If they make it to the big dance, they can very well win it.

  • rankingno1

The Denver altitude is really starting to have it’s effect on his brain cells…..JaVale McGee has already shown us what that can do…….roll Shaqtin’A'Fool

  • rankingno1

He saw what happened to Spurs yesterday didn’t he?

  • Max

Their D isn’t really that great tho.

  • Ganchan

When the game slows down and becomes a 7 game grind the nuggets will lose. If they play either the Clipshow or Memphis in the first round the won’t see the second round. They need that 3rd spot in the west so they can face Golden State and beat them on playoff experience alone.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

It was later reported McGee was suspended by Coach Karl for practising throwing teammates at targets.

  • Redd

Yea but that might be a tribute to their high tempo offensive game. They really push the rhythm, they dare other teams to match up with their offense & most teams can’t match their energy.

Nobody in the western conference plays any D which the reason nobody can beat the heat. Maybe memphis but thats it

  • bike

I can definitely agree with the ‘shocking the world’ part.

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Against the Heat? I don’t know that might be a tough matchup for Denver to win consistently, it’d be some high scoring series though

  • Name

That type of basketball usually doesn’t transition well into the postseason

  • JohnEM

    April fools!

  • Name

So? The Bulls beat the Heat without Derrick Rose, Rip Hamilton and Joakym Noah… That doesn’t mean the Heat won’t beat the Bulls in 4-5 games in the playoffs. Regular season match-ups between teams don’t mean a lot considering the playoffs are a different game

  • Redd

It will, but I think their bigs give them a leg up.

  • Redd

Eh, perhaps you’re right. My Bulls are dead last in offense but I don’t think having it either way definitely projects how you’ll do in the playoffs.

The Heat are a similar team except they do have better D.

  • robb

The Nuggets are playing good bb but they won’t even reach the finals. Nice dream.

  • ayochaser

I actually agree with him. Not saying they’re the best team in the west or the NBA but they match up probably better than anybody else in the league does against them athletically. Their bigmen aren’t prototypical bigs who post up and eat space they move around, and like to run the floor. Brewer, Gallo, & Chandler are all as long if not longer than lebron and extremely athletic themselves so they have plenty of guys to make Lebron work on offense and defense and I didn’t even mention Iggy. So they’re deep at every position, and probably have the toughest home court for opposing teams. I couldn’t see Miami winning the series in Denver.

    San Antonio?

  • denversportsfan

Let’s go nuggets they can beat Miami amd will there under rated in my mind

  • Feez_22

I’m sorry…. But an uptempo team won’t stand a chance in hell against miami in a series. That is not the way to beat a miami team which is already the most efficient offense league wide.

Miami currently scores 103.3ppg on 49.7% fg% with the 22nd slowest pace in the NBA. Basically, they are the 5th best scoring offense and the most efficient offense in the NBA in terms of fg% and play at a pace comparable to indiana, chicago, etc.

Denver scores 105.6ppg on 47.7% fg% with the 2nd fastest pace in the NBA…. It is what it seems. Fast pace team, high scoring (efficient) offense. Denver’s offense is basically maxed out as they maximize the number of possessions they get.

Basically from what i see, denver going uptempo would increase miami’s pace and would exponentially increase miami’s ppg while denver’s will stay the same due to them already maxing out their possessions in the reg season. This is why teams slow down miami… If you try to make it a track meet, miami will destroy you. It is counter-intuitive to run against MIA bc if you increase possessions, they will more likely than not score more efficiently (best fg%, 2nd best 3pt%). I don’t like the idea of running on miami. The best way is pounding them down low… Not making it a track meet.

No matter what kind of athletes you have, making the game a track meet will favor miami (for the reasons i outlined above). They are already a top 5 scoring offense playing slow… the only top 20 offense with a bottom 10 pace in the NBA… why speed that up? Why kill yourself? At face value, many of you may think the nuggets could in fact beat the heat in a series. However, just think about it for a second… Miami has the fastest perimeter defense in the NBA, Miami is a top 5 scoring offense without FB points (only 18th in the nba) and miami is the most efficient nba offense without increasing pace. Increasing the pace will get your team killed out there v. miami no matter who you are in a playoff series, period.

Sorry but I don’t consider Den to be a true contender for the championship given that they are a pedestrian 17-21 on the road. If they maintain their current spot, they have to win at least 2 games on the road 3 straight series to win the championship.

  • roscoe

all ur hot-air & paragraphs proves one thing to me.

DEN has a chance of beating MIA.

    believe it.

  • Mackenzie

The only way the Nuggets could beat Miami in the Finals is if LeBron gets kept out of the paint (good luck) and the Heat’s shooters go ice cold for a few games; I don’t see Ray Allen, Mike Miller, Mario Chalmers, Rashard Lewis and even James Jones (if he plays) missing a whole lot of open shots. Miami has the best perimeter shooting team in the league.

  • http://twitter.com/dashk93 Dashawn Kimbrough

The bulls are a great still but theyre no spurs.. for miami to come into san antonio and pull off that win without there two stars shows how dangerous they can be moving forward

Well, this IS the kind of mentality you want from your players. You don’t want them thinking “Oh, well, we might as well make the finals and lose to the Heat”. They might steal a few games and make the fans think that “Hey, this could happen” but let’s face it, LeBron James is on the top of the world right now.

Well said. – it should be noted that Denver is scoring “fast break” points off of makes a lot of times. They just flat wouldn’t get those against Miami in a series. But everything was well said, I just think that’s worth mentioning.

numbers dont lie. top 10 defensive team when it comes to points allowed per 100 possetions

  • roscoe

“wouldn’t get those against Miami in a series”… – completely disagree.

its ridiculous 2 watch them get lay up after lay up when teams r back on D.

    MIA is a suffocate-r on the perimeter & d’best team D in d’last 6 min o’D'game we’ve seen in awhile…

but DEN is solid. Don’t forget McGee if he can stay on the floor = trouble.

  • JL

The problem is McGee is trouble WHEN he is on the floor. Dude’s basketball IQ is so low. Really he should just try to not do too much. Just stick to grabbing rebounds, blocking shots (without goaltending) and dunking/post moves. No jump shots, fade aways, passing one handed.

  • JL

All capable bigs have huge games against the Heat, but their team still loses. Chalmers, Wade, and LBJ make their PG and wings struggle. The difference more than makes up for the bigs taking advantage of a soft interior D (just going off their W/L).

  • roscoe

karl basically took the birdman from “on the verge” to a very good big.

i foresee the same thing w/ McGee. its a WIP, we agree.

karl is getting this team ready for a run imo & okc is fragile & sas is old.

lac ain’t goin do it, mem can’t do it if Z isn’t at a high level (not mentioning gay is gone), so who else? why not DEN? gsw? no. LAL? no. who?

DEN can make it to the dance.

  • JL

I don’t know if birdman was ever a very good big. he was definitely awesome as an off the bench shot blocker, but was still a mediocre rebounder and his offense was mostly dunks. McGee oozes with potential, but most of the time he just plays like his brain was filled with ooze. Though he already is much better than Birdman was (throughout his career, not just one year).

I do agree that Denver can make it. They seem to be option 1C to OKC and San Antonio’s 1A/1B. Lawson’s on fire (before he got injured). Memphis is close behind. Clippers are decent but just missing something. if Billups could stay healthy (I think he’s done with all these consecutive injuries), they would be ok.
I don’t think OKC is fragile though. Do you mean mentally in that Westbrook can go on a 6-24 shooting binge while Durant stands watching?

  • roscoe

good points. i won’t argue birdman was great, but he became a valuable player under karl and is very important to MIA now.

mentally… no… kd may have given away a secret to bron, but that is not the mental imo. maybe he lacks the @ss hole mentality it takes to get a chip, but idk if that is the case.

i think the westbrook – kd relationship is a problem. the reason idk.

publicly they’ll deny it and have each other’s back, but their body language towards each other says something else to me on occasion.

my instincts tell me westbrook is not happy w/ the persona he is kd’s sidekick when in fact he is much more as was harden.

this thing rears it head in big games imo and is why dfish is on the team.

  • JL

There aren’t enough Birdmans in this league. Guys who may not be super talented or put in all the time to become a scoring machine. These are the men who have extra-ordinary energy and charisma. The crowd just gets to a different level because of their plays.

OKC I still think should have traded Westbrook and kept Harden. Harden is a better fit with KD, and they can run a triangle type offense with him as the PG. Another of OKCs problem is their coaching. It’s kinda true that he plays Perkins and Fisher more than he should because of their stabilizing factor, but when they are on the court they are hurting the team.

Westbrook is in a catch 22. I don’t think he realizes that when he stops trying to prove himself so hard that he’s not the sidekick, he will actually become the main man. When he learns to manage the game better and takes smarter shots, he’s actually better all around than KD because his defense can be lock down. But he gets all this negative press since he tries to shoot it too often when it’s not always the best option. Sorry westy, taking more shots per game doesn’t make you the star of the show.

    in your dreams? :D

Yeah sure Ty, somebody COULD beat Miami just like somebody COULD score 101 points someday….ain’t happening bro.Nobody will beat them this year& your team will be fishing by the conf.finals anyway,so why bother.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

    not in a series

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

you’ll have to wait a while for that one

  • pposse

Memphis has two solid big men in the game. They are about as much of a lock to get to the western conference finals than any team outside the Thunder imo out west. SAS are old, Ginobli is injured. I haven’t seen much out of SAS since they beat the Cavs in the finals. They got to WCF last yr, but completely gassed when Ginobli was healthy too. The clippers are stacked, but i dont trust them. I Dont believe in GSW and the Lakers aren’t even a lock for the playoffs right now. Denver has a lot of athletic guys that won’t get winded, i think they have a legit shot to shock the world this yr.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they get those because teams don’t have the wing players athletic enough to cut off that penetration.
Miami on the other hand is the only team who has 2 of it’s top 5 rim protector’s who also double as elite wing defenders.
And Dwyane Wade is the best help defending SG since Jordan. While we already know just how fantastic LeBron is both on and off the ball.
Denver would really have to ratchet up their shooting to have a chance against Miami in a series. No matter how good their perimeter player’s are, they aren’t going to be better than Wade and James over the course of a series. There is just no way.
But, Kenneth Faried, Kosta Koufos, JaVale McGee really can make it hell for Miami on the boards (which is the best way to beat them, since they will presumably be scoring more efficiently then you, the extra possessions from rebounds would be imperative), that would be the best shot they have at beating them.

  • roscoe

good points about okc… good points.

  • http://www.facebook.com/zer02hero15 James Franco Guerta

They can beat the heat but the hardest part is to go out alive in the West.

  • http://www.facebook.com/zer02hero15 James Franco Guerta

Spurs are like a offensive team now but they still have a good defense but its not like before

  • http://www.facebook.com/shooting.guard.319 Shooting Guard

good point on the spurs. i don’t think the nuggets have the defense to withstand miami

  • pposse

yeah even with all that, them beating the Heat is a crazy stretch of the imagination. Iguodala is in his prime and kind of flew under the radar this year he has the potential to slow down Lebron and maybe lockup a D Wade provided that Wade is not %100 or ailing from some injury. I also like Corey Brewer ever since his Florida days..always thought he had a little Scottie Pippen in him being long and versatile defensively..didn’t really happen for him but that whole Florida team had some winners on it.

  • danpowers

true, but still better D than most east and also most nba teams
