Ageless Tim Duncan Continues to Dominate

37-year old Tim Duncan has the San Antonio one win away from reaching the NBA Finals, and regardless of what the calendar says, Timmy cannot be stopped. Per Yahoo! Sports: “Duncan scored seven of his 24 points in overtime while adding 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks to spark the Spurs to a 104-93 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. With the Spurs now owning a commanding 3-0 lead in the series, Duncan is one more victory away from reaching his fifth NBA Finals and first since 2007. ‘I’m very focused on another opportunity to make it to another championship and trying to win,’ Duncan said. ‘I’m not worried about how old I am or whatever it may be. … We’ve been counted out for a bunch of years and we haven’t been there in forever. It would mean a lot. We obviously have one more game to win to get to that point, but I’m excited about the opportunity to get there.’ [...] Duncan scored six OT points in the Spurs’ 93-89 Game 2 victory. He opened Game 3′s OT with a 19-foot jumper and a three-point play. He added a crunching screen on Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley and a nice no-look pass to Tiago Splitter that led to another basket. ‘He was huge the other night in overtime and got it done for us, and he did it again (Saturday night),’ Popovich said. ‘That’s why he is considered as great as he is for [16] years. He’s been unbelievable. He feels a responsibility to carry us in those kinds of times, and he did it again tonight.’ In the process, Duncan also moved ahead of Wilt Chamberlain for second in NBA playoff career double-doubles with 144 and passed Jerry West for sixth all-time on the playoff scoring list. Duncan, who is happy out of the spotlight, wasn’t moved by the accomplishments. Asked if the two benchmarks meant much to him, Duncan said: ‘It means I never know [about them] until you tell me.’ [...] ‘This is a special run for me,’ Duncan said. ‘I really want to get this one done. I really want to get back to the Finals. I want to win another championship.’”

The Spurs are an amazing team. I think this is the first year that I have truly appreciated them and enjoyed watching them advance through the playoffs. As a Celtic fan, I would have really enjoyed seeing a healthy Boston team face the Spurs in the Finals.

@NerdNumbers: The Spurs have won 50+ games and made the playoffs 16 consecutive seasons. They’ve only failed to get out of the 1st round 3 times.

  • whooo!

and one of those was when Duncan sat out the playoffs due to knee injury. people count dynasties by successive rings, but i don’t know how the Spurs franchise under TD/Pop/RC can’t be considered a dynasty with records like what you just listed.

  • Mike Mihalow

People are morons. Its a dynasty. How many others teams have gotten these: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51wb-Q%2BQSkL._SY300_.jpg

  • roscoe

typically a franchise or more specifically earns the moniker of “dynasty” when they win consecutive titles.

no doubt SAS or more specifically Duncan has had a great run,

but they aint the Yankees & they ain’t LAL & they ain’t dominate year after year.

keep in mind i believe they have the best shot to win it all this yr.

  • roscoe

go home w/ ur BOS love…

they are irrelevant, they lost BRO

  • Caboose

    Best since Jordan.

  • Caboose

    The Robert Horry argument.

  • roscoe

    *cough cough

get outta here w/ your copycat “SE” argument.

    be original BRAH

  • Caboose

    Define dynasty.

  • roscoe

    dynasty = succession of rulers.

succession’s connotation is one after the other.

thus the years after each SAS chip someone else won…

result, SAS has not had a dynasty.

feel free to change the English language. do you need Webster’s #?

  • Caboose

For fu*k’s sake just shut up.

Dynasty: “A succession of people from the same family who play a prominent role in a certain field.”

If we’re applying that to sports, it would be a succession of players from the same team who play a prominent role in the NBA. Bingo. Spurs are a dynasty. I don’t know where you get the completely arbitrary idea that it takes two successive championships to be a dynasty, but it’s not from “Webster’s” or whatever else you want to try to quote.

  • danpowers

looks like the grizzlies are hibernating quite early this year

  • LP @ThisisEther

this is the latest they’ve “hibernated” in their franchise history…cut em some slack….but uh yea, they won’t be going back to SA…

  • Max

    Who is your team exactly?

  • danpowers

im a little slow man, so when that word play came to my mind i just HAD TO post it, even tho some years late ;)
im impressed by their play and grizzlies fans can really be proud of their team.

  • king_tut

i hope SA can get anthony davis and mold him like timmy..then you have leonard / green and TP can still play..

  • Bigpeeeni

Greatest power forward ever without any hint of an argument, this guy amazes me

  • roscoe

    _____ no, I won’t!

in order to be a dynasty you must win multiple chips in a row.

if SAS had won even 2 in a row I would agree that they are one.

however, my disagreement does not in anyway take away from SAS as a team, its great coach, its great management… they’ve been great w/ duncan & pop.

i just look at teams like CHI/DET/BOS/LAL in hoops & NY in baseball, or teams like DAL in football that completely dominated year after year and translate that dominance to a dynasty. w/ the spurs we have the asterisk as well, just like MIA

call me picky.. but at least my opinions are original and not some regurgitated bird-worm I read somewhere or listened to on a highlights outlet.

  • roscoe

my team is never worth mentioning…

i am objective about em all.

  • Caboose

    Detroit. Seriously.

Your definition is entirely arbitrary, you have to see that, right? Give me some hope in you and admit it’s a completely arbitrary and irrelevant qualification as a dynasty.

  • Caboose

    Whoever is playing yours.

  • whooo!

so just to clarify, a Detroit team winning 2 rings back-to-back, and then completely vanishing for years on end, is superior to winning 3 rings in 5yrs and 16-straight years of 50+ wins? a 2-yr run is more of a “dynasty” than 16 years of sustained excellence and 4 rings?

also, you conveniently forgot webster’s 2nd definition of dynasty: “a powerful group or family that maintains its position for a considerable time.” 2yrs is not a “considerable time.” and if 16yrs of success, and the highest winning % in all 4 major sports isn’t dynasty, someone sure as hell needs to create a new term rather than “a great run”. kids will graduate high school next year having lived their entire lives with the spurs in the playoffs and winning 50+ games.

  • Max

    Lol yeah looks like it..

  • Max

    Durp.

  • Max

If he can’t see he’s wrong after this, he’s stoopid.

  • jmm

This “ageless” angle is ridiculous and redundant. He’s had a life filled with exercise, good food and the best physical therapy money can buy. His coach has been managing his career via minutes thoughtfully for years, and his game has always been built on fundamentals not athleticism. He’s 37, not 60 can we chill out?

  • RayJr

No consecutive championships. No dynasty. Sorry try again.

  • Caboose

Who do you think actually takes you seriously outside of Seed?

  • RayJr

    Awe don’t be mad

  • roscoe

you seem to value the aggregate…

were as I see the whole picture…

your mind is challenged by constraints and that’s okay.

you keep drinking the kool aid, but in 50 years SAS will be remember as a non-dynasty by the masses.

just calling it how it is, not how you in particular feel.

  • roscoe

your jaded and your heart is cold… there is nothing on the face of the earth that could give you hope.

    good luck.

SAS is not a dynasty, but will win the chip this year.

  • roscoe

    define stoopid.

    both definitions please.

  • roscoe

is DURp an acronym or something my translator software is not helping me with that?

  • Max

    Hurp.

  • Max

Dumb and or ignorant with a taste of stubbornness in there.

  • roscoe

    Well done Max well done.
